A very well done experience. The museum does a great job of humanizing the inmates past. There is a focus on prison reform, which I really appreciated. Walking through the prison you can feel why reform was, and still is, necessary. The tour guide was quick but there was a lot to see. It was certainly a bonus that she was an administrator working here for 30 years; no questions left unanswered. Definitely recommend the visit.
Value to visit, before you visit try to watch “ 12 angry man “ movie, imagine how many prisoners are in this kind of prisons unfairness. How fine Education can reduce prisoner like this days of neatherland ( the only country without prison), how capitalism can rise crimes and how faith can reduce it.
It’s probably the only place to visit in this town, so if you have time you can go. The tour takes 1 hour. It’s quick, very little time to take pics or ask questions.Gift shop is very narrow to this prison only, not just any prison theme. It would be nice to have some fun things there, like pjs, hats with prison colors, etc.Wouldn’t recommend to visit if you have limited time.
I went on a tour of the prison August 2020, and it was very fun! The tour was led well, our guide had lots of fun facts, and even shared some added stories at the end local to the area.I’d recommend the tour to all!
If you love prison history, this is a great location to visit. The guides are very knowledgeable and engaging. Galen was a great guide. We were able to see many different parts of the prison including death row and the gas chamber, various cell blocks beautiful art made by an inmate, and hear so many stories about the prison and everyone who passed through there. This prison is also the site where a movie was filmed and paranormal investigators, from Ghost Adventures, have visited. There are even deer roaming the property.
This place was the main reason we stayed overnight in Rawlins so we could go the next morning, and was not disappointed. Our guide was well educated and friendly. Would have liked more time in each area, for photos, and some areas to explore, but overall a great experience. I personally also enjoyed having a penny machine as souvenirs...I love them!
This place is awesome in a weird sense. There is a little museum that will want to make you take the tour. Price is reasonable.Go when its hot outside, the tour lasted about an hour and its cool to cold throughout the building. Some of the things you will be told is amazing.Plus they allow well behaved dogs on the tour if kept on leash. My dog loved it since it was hot outside.
Absolutely must stop! The kids loved it. Might have been a little much to learn how the Julien Gallows work, but still educational. The Romanesque Architecture is beautiful. Our tour guide was excellent. She was very animated in her tone and kept everyone engaged. We had a small tour group, so we were fortunate to be able to ask many questions; even some gruesome ones. Dont come in just thinking it is going to be a bunch of cell blocks. There were many interesting people that came through and some repeat customers too. If you look carefully while youre there too, youll see a lot of the places that the guards stood behind fences on all four levels with access for their Tommy guns to fit in case of use. Such a unique stop. So happy we did. Kids still are talking about it.
The excellent one hour tour goes through just about every area, inside and outside, of this old historic prison. The tour was well narrated by our pleasant and very knowledgeable tour guide Tina.
Great stories about the years it was in operation!
Cool place to pay a quick visit to when you are traveling through. It was nice to stretch our legs and take a break. I do wish you could tour of bit more of the prison itself and not just the entrance tho. They have interesting stories, pictures and memorabilia
Myself my wife and my daughter took the prison tour. Before the tour we were able to wander around the museum which is fairly similar to any other prison museum. Displays of inmates of note and infamy as well as prison artwork and Weapons confiscated from them. The tour was well over an hour long and our Young tour guide was very well-versed in the history and lore of this prison. Overall Id say she did an excellent job. The prison is reportedly quite haunted however do not expect much information on that on the tour. However once the tour is over No Holds Barred you can ask the tour guide anything about experiences and legends of hauntings. As a matter of fact as we were leaving my wife was overcome with a very strange sensation of foreboding sadness which required her to get out of the building as soon as possible. I myself did not experience anything although there are areas in the prison which definitely have a heaviness type vibe to it.
This was an awesome experience! Our guide was awesome. Touring any old, closed prison has been on my bucket list! Being able to see one with such history was amazing! Im so glad this was my first!
Driving through Wyoming, there isnt much to do, but the Old Wyoming State Penitentiary is a good stop to make. For only $10 you are able to tour most of the prison (except for upper floors due to rotting). Our tour was lead by Zach, who despite only worked for 2 weeks and given 5 tours, was very informative and humorous. The prison itself is said to have some paranormal hotspots due to the amount of deaths that occured during the time the penitentiary was functional. Although, we didnt see any ghouls during our tour, you might be lucky enough (or not) to!
I did not pay to go in. Still well worth the time
Very cool your! Lots of stories... Actually got to go into the gas chamber, see the old gallows area, and death row! Super interesting! 10/10 would recommend.
It was a great visit. Very intriguing and interesting. We had a private tour from someone who actually did time there back in the 80s. To me the most intriguing part was the old graveyard. Its my plan to try and get a hold on one of the ancestors of the Chinese gentleman that was buried there in the 20s. It is my hope that he has family either here or back in China. I would just like to let them know that someone will take care of his grave. All in all a good place to tour.
Very informative. Our guide knew his history well. It definitely was a frontier prison. Well worth the visit.
The tour was absolutely amazing. The guides new what they were talking about and had fantastic stories. I was told there is a pretty girl behind every tree outside rawlings wy. Turns out they are the guides too.
Very cool place to stop while traveling. Lots of artifacts on display and the tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Cool little stop on our trip. Wish we has time for the full tour.
Was very informative and the tour guide was very entertaining.Bill C
Highly recommend. Great tour of an old prison. Cash only so make sure youve got admission before you arrive.
Interesting history, certain areas could have been explained better and other areas could have been illuminated differently to help demonstrate what was being discussed.
Couldnt wait for the tour so didnt get to see the actual prison area but the museum portion was cool. Would be nice to do a self guided tour option but might not be able to.
Really cool place with great team working there!
Really loved the tour, the guide was really informative about the prison. Will tell my family and friends.
Amazing site to see great history, good scenic view of highway and mountains.
My wife and I enjoyed our visit here. I love old and abandoned buildings so this prison was very interesting. You get to go into the cells and kind of see what it was like to be a prisoner there. Tour was well worth the money.
Its a little run down, but overall we had a great experience. Our guide was new (2nd tour ever) but did an admiral job. Neat history and phenomenal buildings. Its worth the tour and time spent.
Wonderful tour to check out if you’re in the Rawlins, WY area. Our tour guide was very informative, offering fascinating facts and stories about former prisoners. The tour is interactive, allowing you to test your knowledge of what you’ve learned! Definitely check it out!
Loved the tour and felt a hand on my shoulder but no one was there!
Awesome part of history. Loved the Friday the 13th tour. Wish I couldve taken pictures or hing out in death row. Would love to be able to do a real ghost investigation.
This was an amzing tour, the guide was very knowledgable. They take you through 95 percent of the prison. This is a must see if you get the opportunity..
Sobering informative and interesting tour. Set for 1987 film Prison. Prisoners artwork in dining hall shows talent and imagination.
Lots of history, learned a lot and amazed of how much to see. 1 hour tour for $10, definitely worth it.
Everytime I take the tour, I learn something new. Even if you taken a tour before, I suggest you take another one.
Lots of historyExcellent tour.
Amazing tour with an AWESOME tour guide. It was a great stop on a long road trip.
The best tour ever by the way alot of historic
Interesting tour! Staff are very knowledgeable.
This place is interesting, eye opening, and maybe a little scary.
Go through the tour very nice
I would not go here if you are in a large group. A move company came and destroyed some of it.
Its worth the time.
Great, informative tour guide. You get up close and personal with all the prison facilities.
Interesting seeing a real American prison that closed in 1981 but also quite disturbing. The smell is what got us. Can still smell it - ugh!
Very cool and interesting place to visit!! Tour guide was awesome!!
Learned alot
Very informative, rustic and a worthy side stop. Cool when you consider there is a new prison down the road to house the current prisoners. Nice gas chamber!
The prison was a great experience, the staff was not so much. Our group did a 5 hour tour of the prison and two of the ladies kept complaining about how tired they were and not wanting to be there. A couple of people in our group were passionate about paranormal activity and they insisted on laughing at the situation. I would of preferred to have more mature people giving us a tour, more respectful people, and on top of it there was wasted time when we got to the location and it ran into our tour hours. When we arrived we didn’t know where to park and we were greeted with can you park over there? No excitement behind it. I would of loved this more if we did less hours and if it was more haunted. We had a few moments of scares but that’s it. It would of been a better experience if the staff was more friendly and mature. Would i go here again and recommend this to others? NO.
Neat piece of history. Rawlins was gross.
What a terrifying piece of history! The fact that its run down adds to the intreag. Tour guide was great.
Spooky place that was fun to visit!
Interesting well informed guide
Awesome tour guide. Very interesting. Unexpected. Go if you have the chance!!
Amazing piece of history and wonderful staff!
This place was on our way from Rock Springs Wyoming to famous historic places on mormon pioneer natl historic trail : Independence Rock State Historic Site and Martin Cove. As we like history we make not very long stop at Rowlins Wyoming Frontier Prison. It was the only prison Wyoming had (from 1901 till 1981). It helped to get rid of a lot outlaws who roamed high planes, canyons and mountains of post-Civil War Wyoming. There are guided tours daily from Memorial. Day to Labor Day with tales of haunted by history place.
Great tour! If you have the opportunity to catch a tour here you should go.
This tour was worth going through.
What a great way to understand some of the aspects of the real wild west. You get a real vibe from this place. Real mechanized cell blocks, gallows, gas chamber, etc. The fellows who ended up here had it rough...
Definitely worth your time if youre in Rawlins Wyoming. Very interesting history, really makes you think. Immature guys really seem to know what he was doing, kudos to him!
Such a detailed tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining.
Walked in the day they said they opened for tours and before we even entered the door we were told I cant let you in here. No hello no explanation. You shouldnt advertise you are opened and then turn people away. Thats just bad customer service. You would think museums would take all the proceeds they could get.
Sign says open. But was closed
Stopped on my way through.
Such a cool and historical place. A lot of interesting historical memorabilia. I would love to do a night tour or Halloween event. Also, there is a cemetery you can visit and a mural that is part of the Rawlins art Walk.
It was a very interesting tour.
What great place to come visit. You have pay to come see the tour. Great see how life was at prison. It was the best for some other it was good life style. Remember to bring a warm coat, gloves and hat. No heat in the buildings. Have to come see it......
Very cool. It was a cold rainy day so it felt very realistic for what temperatures would be inside during winter... Guide was fabulous. He was a bit creepy too which helped the drama. Recommend the tour for sure!
Loved the prison. Many stories of prisoners and their time spent incarcerated. Museum had sections of rope used to hang the worst of the worst. Macabre though different. Gift shop was developing an identity and could offer a more creative and fun assortment of gifts and momentos. Would have loved to have taken the tour but arrived late. Plan ahead to enjoy all this stop has to offer. You wont be disappointed.
This was an educational and heart wrenching stop with a very knowledgeable young guide who told interesting stories about the prisoners who were there until the 1970s.. The smells and sights were hard to see including the automated hanging room and gas chamber. Chilling.
So awesome! Guide was super friendly and informative! Do yourselves a favor and go in the cells, sit in the gas chamber, stand on the trap door, do whatever they let you do! I will be back!
This is truly a wonderful historical place to stop. Guides are knowledgeable and answer lots of questions you wouldnt expect to hear. Be sure to stop here.
This was fascinating! The tour guide was hilarious, great sense of humor. Learned a lot and would highly recommend it. And they do take credit cards!
Didnt have time for a tour, but the museum staff was very kind and knowledgeable.
Awesome guide and fascinating tour
Beautyful building for a prison. Can feel the Histery here . Its huge ! So much histery here .You have stores walking distance food, gas bathrooms . People are kind .
Wish we had time to do the full tour, but even just the quick walk through we could do was fascinating. It is a bit graphic at times, and I would imagine the guided tour is even more graphic based on the rooms you visit. Incredibly interesting though!!
Great Historical location! The staff and tour guides are very knowledgeable about the facility and the history of it. Very affordable
Tour guide knew her stuff. Glad they decided to save this bit of history.
Great history and spookiness
I enjoyed the tour. The gas chamber was a little creepy but overall it was worth it and the guide did a good job.
Must see if you are in the area
Went in for a tour today! Teric was our tour guide, he was very friendly, interactive with our group and very knowledgeable about the prison. I think its great all the youths they have employed! I will definitely be back :)
This place was so cool! The tour was great, but the prison itself was the main attraction! You should know that its cash only for the tour.
A must see we weren’t going to stop but it was the best thing we did on our trip
Great tour. I love the stories that are shared as you walk through history and imagine a truly hellish life as a frontier prisoner. Worth the stop if you are travelling through boring I-80.
Interesting history. Unfortunately we were too late for the tour.. but the highlight was the striking similarity of this facility to Old Main, the oldest building at the University of Wyoming... Built at the same time, same stone, same architect Im sure, similar look, maybe the same purpose... Go Pokes.
Was an awesome tour. Wish I could have seen more areas, but would love to do the tour again.
Nice little tour to break up the trip
Wonderful tour guide. History at its finest.
Wonderful knowledgeable staff very interesting to see. The stories are good, worth the time and cheap. Great piece of history.
Amazing tour!
I love history!
