Inspiring, heartwarming, and challenging artistic live theatre. Big city theatre quality in a quaint New England town, Portsmouth is fortunate to attract the caliber of performers who play here.

We saw ragtime here yesterday. The theatre isnt bad but there is no handicap accessibility. Every seat is a great seat, but the elderly had a very hard time getting up and down all the stairs, which caused a back up trying to enter and exit. Great place, they just need to update for handicap and elderly.

We have been here a couple of times. We saw Rag Time last night and were absolutely amazed. The cast was so large I was very impressed by the choreography. The acting, singing and sound production will rival anything down in Boston. My wife had tears in her eyes throughout the play.Skip Boston, hit Portsmouth and check out the high production value at The Rep.Can’t wait to see Sweeney Todd.

This place is magic. I cannot recommend it enough.I have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed by a performance whether it be Mad Haus, a main stage show, or otherwise. The seats may be a bit small, some seats may be far away, but what this theater brings is top notch talent and intimacy. There is just something special about being so close to the stage. And the ingenuity of some of these sets! It blows a lot of what Ive seen in Boston out of the waduh.I urge everyone, big, little, tall, short, old and young to check Seacoast Rep out - truly you wont be disappointed.

The caliber of the talent was a welcome surprise & treat, the theatre was designed so there is no bad seat in the house, the lovely chairs & tables in the lobby where you can sit before the show or during intermission add to a night at the theatre atmosphere. Great little theater. Not quite a theater in the round, but seating did go about half way around the stage. It is an old theater, but looked to be in great shape. Seating was a little snug, but again it was an old theater. The cast was amazing when I saw Tommy there. If in the Portsmouth area when they are putting on a show I would go again.

A gem of the Seacoast. Always punching way above their caliber, this theatre puts on shows that are so high quality, they rival the performances of major cities. Musical theatre, adult drama, kid shows and more, From the typical to the unusual, there is something for everyone at this theatre. The Red Light series shows are my favorite here because they feature dark comedy and unique musical performances by local artists who appear to be having a permanent acid trip. They bring you into their world beautifully and leave you safely in firm footing before you leave. Mad Haus in particular is a monthly television soap opera featuring a skeleton that kills people, his lover, and a story teller, and their crazy cast of rotating supporting characters, but you can only see each episode live. If you miss it, oh well. There are no reruns. The musical theatre has professional performers with high quality sound, sets, musicians, and choreography. This place is professional and beautiful, located literally underground right on the waters edge in Portsmouth. Go here for an evening of entertainment. They even take Bitcoin for tickets and drinks. Very cool.

Every show weve seen here has been fantastic! Even though they have tiny bathrooms, a small lobby, and a theater that is hard to move into and out of seats, I still cant take stars away because the quality of the performances and the unique venue make it all worth it! They have been raiding money for renovations, so it may be getting better soon!

The performance itself was amazing. Went and saw West Side Story. Great talent had there. But as I sat to the far right side I took notice to the carpentry work of the stage lighting. The whole beam was being held up by 2x4s floating on the angeled support, meaning the bottom of the 2x4s were toe nailed in, they were not cut to an angel and flushed to the support at all. Now Im sure theres much more support for this structure up above and I sure hope so, but it striked the curiosity of how stable this was. That wasnt the only structure put together sloppy like. The stage is pretty cool and how the seating is condensed to get close to the performance, so that was cool. Very small stage. Its located just off the water to the edge of town, which was so nice. They are an organization that accepts donations to keep operating and I think they are doing a fabulous job and Im sure theyve come a long way. Lets just hope those structures that rest above our heads as we watch the entertainment are structurally sound and safe!

I have seen quite a few shows in Boston and some community shows on the North shore. The talent in the musicals here are incredible - they must have an excellent community pipeline to get talented people to perform in their shows. The space is quite odd and technically challenging though. Sure - you get really up close with the actors which is pretty thrilling at times - but I find it overall a technically / logistically a distraction from the show. Unless you are seated in one of the back rows (center) your perspective of the space and ensemble is often skewed to see just a few actors at a time. Its kinda like sitting in the front row of a movie theater: your constantly turning your head and its very difficult to see the big picture - the setting the lights and the actors all at once. Instead you gaze around the space : seeing a few lights (sometimes shining directly into your eyes), a specific set piece, a couple actors, a prop and then back to another actor who is close by, then an audience member across the stage from you. Its a unique space for sure - but its not how I like to see a show. Get seats further back and in the dead center and it shouldnt be nearly as distracting.

A fantastic place to see a show, the best theatre and my personal favorite of all Ive visited in New Hampshire. The theatre has stadium seating, seating Ive come to appreciate. Great little cozy theater with nary a bad seat (except when some props are used). Rows can be close together but there were places where you could spread out a bit more if you need it. Staff are great and youre made to feel welcome. Semi circle rows of seats wrap around a small stage where the prop department makes really good use of limited space. Sound system can be a bit loud. The Winter Wonderettes were well, wonderful, and we thoroughly enjoyed the music and story line. I commend these actors as it was a 2-hr show with a short intermission halfway through and they were just as fresh at the end as they were in the beginning. Lobby area (small bar and lounge seating) gets cold on a cold and windy night as there is no windbreak to dampen the cold that blasts in every time the door is opened, so dress in layers. The theater itself was very comfortable. Nearby parking is limited so be prepared to come an hour or so early, or drop people off and head for nearby public lots or the Hanover St. garage. Some lots are permit-only, so look carefully for signage - its not always prominent.

I very much enjoy the theater but the specific play that I saw was not my favorite. The lobby is clean and decorated with pictures of the actors and upcoming shows. They offer coffee and other small food items in their café. The ushers are very helpful when it comes to finding your seat but it is not at all handicapped accessible. It is stadium seating but very steep. I was a little worried that one wrong step and I would be in the lap of the person in front of me. The seating is just not great for sitting through a two hour show. The intermission is nice to be able to stretch your legs but it is very hard to get by the person next to you. It is a very narrow walkway so you just have to watch your footing. The parking is not great because they do not have their own lot. You have to park in the municipal lot and pay the meter. That is if you are lucky enough to find a spot. I recommend getting there early to find a spot and just maybe take a walk around the beautiful city of Portsmouth. All of that being said, I would still go back for another show. The actors there are amazing, wonderful, talented people.
