The theatre is always nice and clean and very cozy. I’ve seen a few movies here from new movies like Jojo Rabbit to old movies like Night of the Living Dead and both were incredible experiences. The popcorn is so good and the prices are just right for a broke almost college student. The staff is also always friendly and makes me feel right at home. I will definitely be coming back!
Another great movie, 3rd time to see it here, Spirted Away.Watched the movie Arlita and more .This is great local theater. It plays all kinds of movies, second run after the main theaters, classic movies, and movies that arent mainstream. We go there often. The best deal is tuesday, which is discount day,two for one.We love this place. Check out the summer series. And when you go on discount day, you wont feel bad about getting pizza that they sell in the concessions btw we have seen My Neighbor Tototo there at t least 3 times.
This is my go to movie theater when I want to see a movie. They always have a great selection of old movies. With a weekly changing line up the movies never feel stale. Plus the prices are insanely good. Only $4 for a movie, and 2 for 1 on Tuesdays. The theater itself has been around and gone through many permutations throughout the years and I hope that it goes on how it is for a long time to come.
This is my favorite place to go see a movie. Comfortable, good drinks and pizza. Can’t wait till they open again.
Its a cool place! Only 3 theaters and it was nice and empty there when I got there. Popcorn was delicious, staff was friendly... Everything was awesome except theres no parking. Had to find a street spot nearby.
This place is a treasure. I’ve gone here now a few times to watch films with my son, it is the oldest remaining movie theater in the Pacific Northwest, and I love the fact that they have so many movies actually running on film. Snacks are affordable, the lobby is like a blast from the past… And the folks who work there have an enthusiasm for film that I really understand. Movie prices are super affordable, and the surrounding neighborhood is fun to explore… you can’t go wrong on a night or an afternoon matinee out when you go to the academy theater.
I like this neighborhood theatre. It is closer to my home and the price is right. ($4.00)They also have some old movies which is cool. There concession stand has the usual popcorn and candy, but they also have pizza, beer and kombucha. The staff is super friendly and are provide quick service. I really like these old establishments.
A decent theater, far better than a chain location but doesnt really beat edgefield. Still a nice theater with good choices of snacks and beers on tap but the theater rooms are a bit musty and warm. The seats are nice and well spaced for bigger people.
Love the array of food options. Great staff. Awesome movie selections. Best prices in town.
Great vintage style theatre. Good food & drink, lots of options, staff is always nice. Love seeing films here-they show classics and new stuff. Favorite theatre!
One of my favorite little movie theaters in a town full of little movie theaters.Very well curated programming - especially the retro films - and great value. Awesome place to catch Miyazaki on the big screen with friends and enjoy some proper snacks and drinks without breaking the bank. This place is a Portland treasure, and the fact that its right on the border of The Other Portland makes it that much more special.
Great first visit. Unbeatable price of admission, wonderful old structure, including cool lobby and clean restrooms, yummy food and drink, good viewing experience. We will definitely return.
One of my favorite theaters in town. Very affordable tickets, food and drinks. Great movie selection that changes weekly.
First time visiting this movie theatre. I love the real vintage vibes. Went to go watch Labyrinth and only payed $4 for the ticket which is something I’m not used to. They show newer films in addition to older films so there’s something for everyone. Very nice employees and cheap popcorn as well. Highly recommend if you are into these vibes.
One of the best second run theaters in the city. Great screens with local pizza and beer offerings. Plus, they kept a 35mm projector and always have some classic film on weekly rotation. And, some of the matinee showings have an on sight and trained babysitter so parents can pay a few extra bucks and enjoy a film knowing their kid is safe.I cant recommend the place enough.
Very homey atmosphere. The seats were actually comfortable and well kept. Which is pretty rare at these 2nd hand theaters in my experience. The cost of both the movie and concessions were very reasonable. Throughly enjoyed watching Jojo Rabbit last night.
Love this theater! Great popcorn, great price, comfy seats. They play a mix of new and old movies.
Good food and drink options. Cleaner than it used to be. Good second run movies. Good prices. Thank you! Thank you for screening Hudsucker Proxy a while back and for Back to the Future.
The staff is speedy if a bit cold. The food is top notch. The projection adequate and the sound is fine.
My little secret. Love that’s small and they play second run movies for four bucks. Can’t beat it. It’s clean and the staff is nice.
This is my favorite movie theater in the world. They show 2nd run movies, independent films, and old movies. The prices are excellent for both tickets and concessions. They serve beer, hard cider, kombucha, and many other drinks. For food, they serve pizza from the restaurant next door, sushi, from the shop down the street, and delicious popcorn. Best of all, they offer child care on the weekend for a low price, so adults can see a grown-up movie.
Great neighborhood theater! Comfy seats, first run and classic movies, beer and wine, very reasonable ticket prices--whats not to like?
I love this place! We saw Casablanca. Small theaters are really nice, almost all the seats are great. The $4 price is unbeatable anywhere I know of, and theres lots of great food in the neighborhood. Parking isnt easy, but you cant expect that anywhere in Portland, so it doesnt merit decreasing a star.
It was a really fun theater to go to. Smaller, quaint. quieter, less fuss..best of all the prices were family friendly. Dont go without trying the flying pie pizza thats brought in by the Pizzaria 2 doors down. Also have a nice selection of adult beverages...beer, wine and my favorite Cider!
I love that this is a family owned neighborhood theater. They show good movies, and always have an older, sometimes classic, minute in rotation. Decent prices too.
Visiting my old haunts . This was a treat every other week as a kid. Go see a movie, watch people ordering candy. Thinking you could be the leading man someday. Most of the movies were positive and uplifting.
Very good, cheap and clean. But make sure to definitely be there on time! Unlike most theaters who have already 10+ minutes of previews this place does not. They only show one or two so make sure to not miss your movie!
Second run movies are priced at reasonable rates. Pizza available from Flying Pie next door. Free ice water to drink with the pizza and popcorn.
Great food, great ticket prices... Definitely will be back!
Great prices. Nice people. Parking may he a problem.
Fun little gem here in Portland. Great prices, and menu process arent bad at all.
Great local theater showing well priced flicks with delicious treats.
Cozy little movie theater at a discounted price makes for a good time
Love this little neighborhood theater. For $4 you can see a nearly new flick without breaking the bank.
Food we wanted was sold out since we came five minutes before Showtime. What we got was good. Wine selection was good.
Nice little 2nd-run theater
Great second run movie theater! $4 tickets. Cant beat it
The price is great, at $4 dollars per adult BUT they didnt have any kind of air flow on, so I felt like I was seeing the movie in a sauna. It was also very dirty in the lobby. So, not sure if the ticket price decrease is worth the unpleasat environment.
This is a really nice environment to see a movie. Its inexpensive compared to the big chains and much more friendly. Its a great place to bring the kids for a Saturday afternoon matinee on a rainy day. The staff was super friendly. Looked like good pizza and beer (although I didnt partake).
Great customer svc. Nice prices verybclean reatrooms. Ill return to this theatre.
Absolutely love this place. Cheap movie, good food, nice people. I get burnt out on the fanfare of the mainstream theaters, this place offers a wonderful reprieve. My gf and I look for movies here before pulling up fandango. To the staff, you guys are great, thank you.
Neighborhood cinema. Good balance of current and classic movies. Very affordable
Its like the big movie theaters but better.
Its nice to have a local theater that shows cheap movies. My favorite thing is that theres always some classic movie on the bill. Also when I lost my phone they were both helpful about notifying me but diligent about verifying they were giving it to the right person.
Very cute historical theater! Comfy chairs and good snacks. Highly recommend!
Went to see JoJo Rabbit tonight on a date night with my wife. In sum, I was underwhelmed. The tickets were cheap, and so was the presentation: the small screen would have been tolerable except that the sound was so low I missed large swathes of dialogue under the incredible amount of noise my fellow patrons were making. It sounded like maybe someone turned it up a little during the film, but it was still too low. This leads me to my second problem, which isnt The Academys fault per se: people have forgotten how to watch movies in the theater. One person was snorting so loudly, throughout the entirety of the movie, that they regularly overpowered the sound and ruined powerful, poignant scenes. Another person was shaking their popcorn bag equally loudly. The person next to my wife left and returned three or four times, laughed at truly unfunny things, and talked aloud like they were at home in their living room. Streaming movies may have ruined people for watching movies in a theater, or maybe we just got lucky tonight. For those of you saying, you get what you pay for, touché. Id rather pay ten bucks a ticket and watch a movie on a decent screen with a decent sound system than spend the time gritting my teeth waiting for the next adenoidal sniff.
Great popcorn, suuuuper cheap seats and concessions. Only thing is that the seats arent crazy comfortable but theyre average compared to any other theater. Has a fun old-timey feel to it.
This theater is great! Retro building with modern, comfy seats. Great food from local restaurants and beer! Academy Theater plays mostly second run movies... but also shows old timey movies, occasionally on 35mm(JAWS), some in 3D(Friday the 13th III), and some are both(Creature from the Black Lagoon)! They also have an email list, not a lot of junk, just one each week telling you the new movies and show times.
Such a great atmosphere. Buy one get one Tuesdays! I took the girlfriend to Vintage across the street for happy hour before seeing A Christmas Story. Even with loading up on popcorn and getting beer it was a cost effective date and we had the best time. Love you guys!
Great place to see movies for a lower cost before they come out of the theaters. Good food options, beer & cider on tap, and cozy theater rooms. Highly recommended!
This is my favorite movie theater in Portland. Nice sized screens, comfy seats inside the rooms. Great concessions that includes fresh pizza from the place next door and a number of microbrews and ciders. Great atmosphere, great restoration of the building, consistently good film choices ranging from arthouse to mainstream to classics, affordable tickets, & excellent staff.
Saw a kid on the bus with an Academy Theater t-shirt. Wow, its still around? I saw _Duck Soup_ on the big screen there in the early 1980s.
Nice place. Good prices & a nice variety of food options
The concessions are good, some parts of the theaters have tables, and theres alcohol served as well as pizza. I find that a beer or cider and some pizza can make any second run movie a pleasure to watch.
Love this place! Friendly, local service that reminds you of the old days when people loved what they did and it showed.
Love this place! Its been around for ages and is a historic piece of Montavilla. My mother worked there when she was a teenager in the early 50s.Great selection of food and drink, great prices on the movies. They even offer baby sitting. Check it out!
Such an awesome theater playing some good titles and inexpensive. Let alone PIZZA and BEER! I recommend this place for sure. Seats are much wider too, more leg room.
Nice theater great prices and food options
Charming historic theatre with repertory and first run screenings. Been coming here since I was a kid
I love the Academy theater. The staff is friendly, the popcorn tastes really good, and the movies are fun. Like the 35mm 3D version of Creature from the Black Lagoon! The only downer is the webpage doesnt work anymore for showtimes
This place is awesome, was here from California and found this little movie theater. This is the coolest place to watch a movie!! Very comfortable, plenty of leg room for tall people just over all relaxing and safe environment.
Great little theater, you can order pizza from next door at the theater concession stand and eat it in the theater. Great prices too!
Fun 2nd run theater. Clean, good sound. Love the atmosphere, and I am sad Im not local to view the classic movie showings.
This is a great little old-school theater with comfy seats and beer and pizza to boot!
Clean, nice ppl, great price, well curated! I have no complain about this place. Thanks for being there!!!
Very inexpensive place to catch fairly recent movies in relatively comfortable surroundings. Snack bar is cheaper than most.
This is one of the best theaters in Portland. Great concessions including pizza beer wine cider kombucha and all the movie staples. They have great weekly specials and the there is almost always one movie worth seeing. The only downside is the hipster patrons who run their mouth during the movies and the woman who is always on her phone and wont show any self control and leave so as not to bother those who want to watch the movie. Once the staff tackle these issues all is perfect.
Last of the second run theaters left in Portland.Two-Fer-One TuesdaysSlices from Flying pie pizzaOne of the screens is always a retro classic movie.
Comfortable retro theater with pizza, beer & wine!
Awesome movie theater, Tuesdays night are buy one get one free. Other nights also very affordable. If you want an obscure movie spot I would recommend this establishment.
Love thos little theater. Feels like youve stepped back in time
Love this place. Affordable, quaint. Good times.
I love this theater! Its a great price! Theyve got decent seats and theres a lot of classic second runs! I went here to watch Aquaman with my sister last week and we had a great time!
Excellent local movie house. Love to see the classics all summer long!
I love this historical movie theater! Ive been coming here for over a decade. Its comfortable seating, beer on tap, decent pizza (flying pie), and good movie titles only for $4!!! They play retro movies frequently which are a blast to see on the big screen again. Please support local businesses like this one. Theyre doing it right. Staying reasonable on their pricing. Nice and polite staff (hard to find in most trendy Portland establishments). They also offer the theaters (5 of them in total) as rental for big groups.
Always a great experience. Sometimes tough to find a good seat with 3 or more people if you dont show up early. But thats my fault. Not theirs.
THe variriety of movies shown is awsome. The stadium style seats mean noones head is ever in your way. I saw an amazing print of The Third Man on a big screen.
It is amazing here. Great food from flying pie pizza, good beer, they also play old movies like back to the future.
My favorite local second run theater. Cozy and comfortable, good popcorn and beer selection. Great special event movies.
Love this place, cheap tickets and good movies
Laid back theatre, pizza slices from flying pie and lots of local beers on drafts.
Great prices, nice comfy seats, good local.
We love this place. Its Cheap and the people that work there are great.
Sir near the back if youre short. The seats are comically tall and distracting to look over at the screen for 2 hours.
Went and saw a movie here last week with my family. 4 dollar adult tickets and 3 dollars childrens tickets are unbeatable! The theaters are spacious and have a cool classic feel. The food and drink menu is rad. They even serve Sushi for dinner! Great concession prices and they are always showing awesome classic movies, along with newer stuff. Oh and they offer child care for cheap! The Best!
This my favorite theater in Portland. One of the very few neighborhood theaters that show second-run movies at a half the price! They have their 2 for the price of one on Tuesdays, they offer childcare, have local art for sale, good snacks and beverages, friendly staff...I could go on! This is the kind of theater I want to support and will continue to support over any other big multi-plex like Regal. Im grateful for this beautifully restored theater that is well cared and I hope it remains a fixture in the community far into the future.
Love this little neighborhood theater! Clean, friendly, and serves beer/wine/pizza!
Price***** First run and Classics. Love it!
Love this place. Prices are fair. Always a good time.
Great little neighborhood theater of the type you just dont see much of anymore. I paid $4 to see Nightmare on Elm Street. Super to see it on the big screen. They do lots of second run and revival movies. The sound system is better than it used to be, but dont expect the big cinema experience. They also have pizza!
Excellent Theater, Fantastic Staff, Great Concessions. All at Bargain Prices. The theater really is solid. Its a great thing to do during the day..
Retro, but nice to see retro prices
Really neat theater. Small theater rooms but their popcorn tastes amazing.
I thoroughly enjoy coming here, they have an excellent selection of movies, and the place was clean. The pizza next door is excellent and the entire area around it makes for a great date night. I cannot express how cool it is to watch some cult classic movies on the big screen.
Best deals in town, excellent theater.
Intimate setting with a bar, good and cheap food options! Newer movies in addition to lots of throwback movies to pacify any film aficionado. A Portland classic!
Comfy venue featuring a good selection of second-run movies, including throwbacks from the past several decades. Tickets are happily cheap. Mellow portland atmosphere, with pretty good food and beer selection.
Hope the fire did not do to much damage. Cheap films, great beer, great pizza and all the popcorn and snack of a theater experience. A great way to enjoy a night out. They offer babysitting as well!
Good second run theatre, only $4 show in town, $3 for senior citizens. Great food and beverages. Comfy seats.
