The oldest building in Pittsburgh! Originally part of Fort Pitt. Now owned by the daughters of the revolution. Its a nice piece of history that extends before the revolution. The guy who works inside is very informative and friendly. He likes to ask about the visitors background and origins as much as he likes to talk about the history of the building and the site. Its a must-visit for anyone coming to Pittsburgh. Nice time to spend in the Point park and along the river walk as well.
The guy working inside was very informative and nice. Cool little piece of America.
The Daughters of the American Revolution own this property! You have to experience it when you come to Pittsburgh. It is a free attraction and it is the oldest building in Pittsburgh. Originally the property was a fort that the French built. Then the British took over the property.. Now the property is in the hands of the Daughters of the American Revolution! Was an extremely cool place to go to!
The oldest survived building in Pittsburgh, part of history... don’t miss when you are in Pittsburgh along with fort Pitt museum
Fun and educational experience. I learned a lot as an adult!!Parking is far, especially in the rain. But maybe they have a shuttle van in peak season (we visited over Christmas.)My only recommendation is to make a new scavenger hunt. 3 adults and 2 kids really had a hard time. Maybe a kids version with just a few if the more obvious ones?
Free entrance. Parking is difficult- on the streets or parking lots. Worthwhile to experience the state park. Lots of places to sit and relax.
This is a nice piece of history to still have remaining in the area
Its not open for long hours, but during the summer months you can enjoy this little spot and its story about saving history in the Industrial Age. This redoubt from Fort Pitt is the oldest building west of the Appalachian Mountains, serving as a military installation, a dry-goods store, and even a private house! The displays they have inside and a volunteer guide tell you the story of the blockhouse, its salvation from the wrecking ball, and its restoration to display artifacts from Fort Pitts history. Its a great spot to spend a half hour out of the sun and heat in Point State Park. And its FREE!
Very interesting place! We met a very knowledgeable guide who gave us lots of great historical facts not only about the block house, but also a couple events that made the downtown area the way it is today.
Despite being directly across from the Fort Pitt Museum - which is run by the Senator John Heinz History Center - the Fort Pitt Blockhouse is privately owned and operated by the Fort Pitt Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It was open on the early Sunday morning when I was down at The Point taking pictures, and is free of charge. The second floor is not accessible due to safety reasons, but about half of the floorboards have been removed so you can see some of the architectural details and flood-level markers. The nice custodian on duty (Feb. 21, 2016) was very friendly and eager to talk about the history of the blockhouse.
You can look around and out from inside, dress up and take photos with old props, and imagine youve gone back to the old battles of Fort Duquesne. Its historic and to the point!
Nice and simple. Good for the short visit
Very interesting! Built in 1764! Be sure to visit when youre at the park.
One of the oldest buildings in the USA. Pretty neat short and free visit.

Fascinating history of early Pittsburgh.
