The place is absolutely fascinating! The first building is like a doll house factory. The second building is unique given that the first floor can be constantly updated. There are also fascinating exhibits on the 2nd and 3rd floor. The third building has their legacy exhibits. I have some minor issues with balance & my legs. The staff was terrific, soliciting feedback for their upcoming accessibility study. Will definitely go back!
This is my favorite art museum in all of Pittsburgh. The cool thing about the Mattress Factory is that its always changing, its interactive, and you are always slightly shocked and pleasantly surprised.Ive seen so many amazing art installations here over the years. The rotating exhibits always keep every experience fresh and exciting. There was one installation that you would lie down inside a pod, and it was like being in the womb. It was a warm pink hue, swayed slightly, and the visuals changed. It was a very strange and interesting experience. It still stands out in my memory because it was so surreal. The exhibit that makes the Mattress Factory truly stand out is the permanent installation, Infinity Dots Mirrored Room. It makes everyones face light up with child-like wonder. Keep in mind that the art here is very unusual, so if youre not a fan of modern art, it might not be your cup of tea.If youre visiting Pittsburgh and trying to figure out what to do on the North Side—the Mattress Factory is a must see. Also, check out RandyLand, take a walk around the Mexican War Streets, and go to Maxs Allegheny Tavern--this restaurant is authentic old-school Pgh.
Absolutely loved The Mattress Factory! I found it a very immersive experience, with tons of different exhibits to see. Personal favorite was the annex with all of the distorted carpentry, makes you feel as if you’re in a different dimension. Have already recommended to others, but I’m sure I’ll be back!
This amazing art museum is a must see in Pittsburgh. Located in the burbs of the Burgh, it is so much fun with location specific exhibitions... one of the houses makes you feel you are entering a dollhouse, the main building has some cool permanent and temporary displays... loved the polka dot room and the dark floor. .. super amazing experience with the great staff...
This place is so cool! There really is all kinds of art here. Do note that its a multi-building museum though, so there will be some walking involved.
The eclectic mix of art is amazing, very moving! The staff is very friendly and accommodating! All the covid regulations were in place and followed and respected by both staff and patrons!I recommend anyone to visit this really awesome space!
Cool idea to have this kind of museum and also the art was in some cases simplistic and non inspiring. Great gift shop though.
Unlike the name suggests, there was not a single mattress in the entire building. It is quite misleading and disappointing. However, the random art exhibits were pretty good. 4/5 stars, would go again if they added some mattress displays.
Really unique experience. I enjoyed my trip to this museum!
Would give it 0 stars if I could. Absolutely NO mattresses in this place.
This place was amazing! Several floors of art exhibits to check out. The infinity rooms from the exhibit that was going on this month was quite the room. The employees were very nice and knowledgeable. The bathrooms were clean but only located in the basement, thankfully they do have an elevator. The garden was also a nice addition. We went to all three buildings and each was so different that you want to visit all of them if you can. Parking was on site and easy to find, but the best part was it was free.
Its a weird place. There were selective pieces of art which I actually enjoyed and which depicted true sense of utilizing artistic concepts in an intellectual way. Both of the art pieces were from dark floor (where they have kept minimum interference with light). Room with the mirrors is interesting. The one with all the carpenter work is very eerie and disturbing. I found it v overwhelming. The apartment is also a v unique and interesting concept. Rest of the artwork was v subjective. I still think that the admission fee is very high for the art displayed.
We loved all the installments! And the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable!
My favorite museum in all of Pittsburgh. Its actually spread Averys 3 different buildings on the Northside. Very eclectic, very artistic. I love the static exhibits and the fact that they have rotating ones.
What a fun experience for someone that’s visiting Pittsburgh. I was shook when i found one of my favorite artists installation in the museum, Kusama. The museum has three different building in literally an old mattress factory, and they’ve preserved the original structure of the building and reused it as an art museum, genius. If you’re in Pittsburgh then I would say this is a must go to, the art housed in here is the type of art that elicits deep feelings and emotion from a far memory. Highly recommended.
Awesome museum! Lots of weird art. Took about and hour and a half to walk through. And randyland is a cool attraction thats only a couple blocks away
Super funky museum. Amazing and immersive art, perfect to visit if you are in town for the weekend!! You definitely must be able to appreciate modern art- some of the displays are VERY funky. Not for the faint-hearted.
This was a very different experience that is well worth the visit if you are in Pittsburgh. They have 3 buildings, I recommend starting in the two smaller building and then ending with the main. Will admit that its easy to creep me out and the doll house building with music really spooked me, but I really enjoyed it nevertheless. The whole place was very interesting!
This museum is very unique. It is filled with interesting contemporary art pieces
Awesome place to visit in Pittsburgh, love the art constantly updating. Contemporary art makes for great backdrops too for fun photo taking.
I came here with my then-boyfriend (now husband). Its definitely an interesting and odd museum, in a good way. Many unconventional and hands-on exhibits that make you think. Check out my pictures to have a better understanding. I preferred this museum over the Andy Warhol museum though.
If you like unique modern art, this place was pretty interesting. We all had parts we liked or didnt totally like and had fun comparing experiences and different likes and dislikes. It is spread out over three buildings and is a very original experience.FYI two of the buildings would not be wheelchair accessible and have narrow stairs or uneven flooring.
This is a very odd place, dont get me wrong if you love art you will love this place but some of the art is very provocative and vulgar so beware of floor 3 if you have kids there are three separate buildings two of them have multiple floors and one has one floor with a huge ball that bounces in a room and has black chalk or something and it bounces off the wall and creates art.........ok moving on if you take the steps in the main building you can get a view of downtown Pittsburgh which is cool but over all this is a nice place to go and relax I would advise to go early when they open which is 10 cause it can get crowded easily
A must see. I thoroughly enjoyed myself yet I only saw the displays in the first building due to accessibility. There are 3 in total. This place would have 5 stars if they were stroller accessible in the other buildings. This museum is on a side street, so its not the easiest to find and parking is rough. Its worth the visit though. Super excited to get a sitter and see the other buildings.
Amazing! The exhibits are amazing but are not handicap accessible
Great place to visit but a greater place to VOTE
A mix of good and ok rooms, some good rooms for photos and some rooms require patience to experience what the artist intended you to see. Its a good place for people who typically dont like museums or art galleries.
My boyfriend and I drove to Pittsburgh from Cleveland for the Mattress Factory and we were not disappointed! Amazing installations. You get to go through three separate buildings that are all nearby. $15 for students and totally worth it.
A great arts museum... if youve been to a great arts museum (esp. smaller ones), youll find this to be great as well
Dont go in there thinking its just an art museum. Mattress Factory is a fully emersive environment with any form of art being openly expressed. There are many exhibits and each floor/room undergoes a different genre from the other. While some of the exhibits werent necessarily suited to my tastes it goes to show how broad and open they are to their artists creativity. It is truly art that you can get into.
Not your typical museum. Definitely a must see make sure you go to all three buildings and check out the house poem behindIt. Randyland is right around the corner!! DO GO THERE!!!!!
Fun place to check it out once.
Really wild and interested museum. Super creative and talented work.
Great place. I really liked this museum ! Very scary as well !! I dont know why there are too little people during the day. It should be more popular !!
The most interesting museum for Instelations.
Eclectic. Student artists experiment with assigned themes. Worth a visit. Keep an open mind.
Amazing and unique exhibits. This place was more than I was expecting. The only critique, I wish the sign-up sheet for the small exhibit was at the front desk. That would allow people time to view it at the end of their tour. We didnt do it because the time slots were so much later than when we were there.
This musuem is really spectacular specializing in full-size art installations. The location tucked into Northside is really neat. The musuem also features outposts that worth checking out as well. You also get spectacular views going to the stairwell. A must see.
Perfect stop. The Turrell piece is worth waiting for
Honestly, never been here before in my life and I don’t know why but it was such a good time. The exhibits are unique and always changing, there are three separate and different buildings with all kinds of art and sculptures and experiences. The price is reasonable, there’s also a little cafe with food and gift shop, it’s really a great time for the whole family. If you’re visiting Pittsburgh you have to go out of your way to experience this.
Its an interesting visit when you come to Pittsburgh. Definitely different and theres something cool to look at for just about anyone. The second building had alot of carpentry work so my husband loved it. Only bad thing is there are no elevators in second or third building so if you have a baby, you will be carrying! But it makes for a more intimate space and the sweet folks that work there will watch your stroller. My husband and I had a great day!
Very cool contemporary art museum in Pittsburgh. They have 3 buildings and they recommend you start from the basement of the main building and work your way up. They have some permanent and some rotating exhibits. I really liked the Yayoi Kusama exhibit and also there was an exhibit made with different doll house parts and toy parts that was very interesting. Definitely a cool place to check out if youre in the area.
Mattress Factory is a unique art museum. I’m not a museum person but this one is very interesting and I love it!
The Mattress Factory is incredible. Its been innovating since the 1970s, and through the decades theyve accumulated quite a collection. Definitely check out the annexes - one of them was not especially impressive, but the other one (the one about houses and wood and whatnot) was fascinating.
Weird as hell, the name totally throws you for a loop. Super cool though, def would recommend.
Has a lot of cool exhibitions. Yayoi Kusama ones are the most famous and permanent. Weekdays may be preferred over weekends as there are a lot of visitors
I like art, but this modern art museum wasnt quite my taste. There were quite a few exhibits that were weird. My favorite was the charcoal ball (which is no longer there).
This was surprisingly wonderful. I went for my teenagers who are very much into art and had a great time myself. The exhibits in the main building were my favorite personally I enjoyed the interactive feel and play of light and sound. The folks there are all very kind and inviting as well. If its your first time there and finding it via google maps, they have their own parking lot and parking is tough in the neighborhood otherwise. Totally worth the admission and your time
Unique art museum across 3 different buildings. Buildings are within walking distance, but may be hard to get around with a wheelchair. Many different art installations. Some areas are always on rotation, some installations have been there since opening.I would recommend leaving 3 hours to explore the whole campus. But I probably wouldnt recommend going more than once in a blue moon.
After this museum I realized Im not as artistic as I thought. Or at least I didnt quite get what they were going for here. I think it was a bit too extreme in some cases for me.We started out thrilled with the unique 4th floor, and then when we moved down to the 3rd floor we lost a lot of interest. The mirrored room was certainly the highlight of this museum. The 2nd floor is basically empty rooms with a special dark experience. Ill admit I enjoyed the dark room the most. All the additional buildings associated with the mattress factory delivered some truly weird experiences. Honestly, none of it really landed with me. I couldnt/wouldnt recommend paying $20 a person to go here.
Awesome place. Creativity was pushed to the ultimate level of different. 3 buidlings of art work crafted. Definitely would make it a must do trip if your in the pittsburgh, pa visiting or traveling.
Creativity in a box!
Very cool and weird exhibits.
Very unique museum. I like that it’s more interactive and dynamic than the usual art museum. I can’t wait to see what art they bring in next.I especially liked that they offer free parking.
Not a fan at all. I believe an artist should possess some talent and I did not see any of that in many of the pieces. We went for free so it was neat, however, I do not believe it is worth $5 admission let alone $20.And several pieces were NOT family friendly and by the time you see the small text on the description that it contains adult content, its too late.
Its such a creative place to visit. A very family oriented place to go. I myself enjoyed it. Its not a place full of mattresses as most would think that havent been there before lol
Once in a lifetime experience, not to missThank you, thank you, thank you
A museum like no other. Its been around for forty years and shows it. Most art is from the 70s and 80s. Nothing newer. Some pretty cool, different works but not a kid friendly environment. Most art in the mattress factory wouldnt catch a childs eye or should. The second museum is difficult to maneuver for an adult let alone a child or senior. The third was bland on the second and third floor but the area when you first walk in takes the cake. A few cool photo opps but needs more current art and cleaned up some. Oh, the food on the cafe was delicious. The wait was a little long but the avocado grilled cheese was the bomb!
Very unique and unusual art museum
I had a good time. The art promoted thought. Theres there buildings each with multiple levels of exhibits to explore. In building 1, if you take the stairs, you can get a nice view of Pittsburgh roof tops (Im not from PA, so it was nice to see). There was an exhibit that included an option to crawl on the floor, if you choose to do so your shoes will get dirty, just an FYI. Overall, it was a great afternoon. Parents were with there children and the kids seemed to be enjoying themselves as well.
Mattress Factory is a thought provoking, emotion stirring visual experience in Pittsburgh. The artist create such powerful works. My personal favorite was the second floor of the Main building. James Turrell turns dark spaces and single poonts of light into a masterwork of emotion. A must see in Pittsburgh.
The museum is VERY weird and the only rooms I enjoyed were the polka dot rooms. Do not waste your money. I came in with an open mind and was still very disappointed.
Very unique, experiential museum for contemporary art installation and music which some of them actually scared me A LOT!! Haha
I liked the exhibits and as a disclaimer I was able to get admission free because Im a Carnegie Mellon Student. However, I felt that the museum would not have been the actual admission price - there arent very many exhibits, and several that said they would be open in early August were still not open even though I visited this museum in September. The current exhibits and the rotating style of the museum are interesting, but I feel that the price doesnt accurately reflect the value of the experience here. It was still a nice outing and a unique museum! The cream cheese bagel in the cafe was also surprisingly good :)
I understand art is subjective but I wasnt really able to enjoy myself as the lay out of the displays isnt well managed as their is no real type of self guided path as youre constantly bumping into people and traveling through narrow halls and stair cases. The art itself just doesnt come across as unique or moving. That is my opinion of course but I just dont see how scattered items on a bed is art. Perhaps if the items had historical significance or rare quality to them I wouldnt have minded. Overall I encourage others to explore art but I would suggest the Carnegie museum for a better tour structure and collections.
Every room is an adventure for the senses. I love how space is interpreted, and often transformed. The staff has always been helpful in being able to make the most of each exhibit. Its an amazing resource. Reminds me of PS 101 from my old stomping grounds.
Very interesting Place! Mulitple buildings of unique exhibits tucked in the North Side. The installations and artists work exhibited varies from time to time and I notice something new each time I go.
I loved this little slice of magic down a Pittsburgh Alley!
Such a unique experience of a museum, incredibly intimate and quiet. The cafe they have in the back is lovely, and the garden piece in the front is just wonderful. Definitely a great place to go for a date
Split between three buildings, there are really great works of art to see and interact with the space. A gem was seeing Yayaoi Kusamas work. Definitely give yourself some time to explore and look! There is a lot to see and experience.
Had a tour guide, she was nice and did a good job explaining about each exhibit (I say this because my group did not have any questions!) This place is not to far from Randyland, will recommend going to both places! The picture inserted shows the view from the second floor!
Very unique art. We have been here three times now and I truly enjoy going each time to see what is new.
Very unique interesting experience. Unfortunately, one annex building is not handicapped accessible at all, which is surprising since other museums make provisions for those how use canes or wheelchairs. Several exhibit areas are still under renovation, so perhaps the situation will improve with time.
Had a great time visiting the museum. Not quite what I expected, in a good way!
Love love love amazing artist talk, nice museum store, and so many events/opportunities to be involved-so worth becoming a member.
I love art and there were only one or two good exhibits. A lot of the pieces were completely creepy and the unfinished parts of the building gave an eerie feeling. I left feeling dirty and unclean. Maybe my bad experience had a lot to do with the current exhibits, I couldnt honestly tell you but I wont be going back.
Hadn’t heard of this place before but was told by my Uber driver to check it out. A nice change from conventional museums/galleries that really focuses on experiential and sensory exhibits.Although I thought it was definitely worth the trip, the $20 ticket price is a bit steep seeing as barely spent an hour there. There is a sensory deprivation exhibit on the 2nd floor which you have to book in advance. There was a guy taking bookings sat outside the room but he didn’t have a badge or anything so no one knew he worked there - they could do with making that a bit more obvious.
Went there with a thought of sleeping but I lost my sleep after the visit.
Fun experience. Cute for a date or to just enjoy a little art.
I feel like anyone could have put most of the art together if thats what you call art.
Wow what a great museum. Where clothe you can crawl on the floor in. Wonderful exhibits.
Im not sure big fan of modern art, but I loved this museum! A must if youre in Pittsburgh!
Incredibly cool museum with unique permanent and temporary exhibitions!! A must-see in Pittsburgh! Go support contemporary artists
Favorite place I visited in Pittsburgh! It is made out of three different locations around the same block, each of it with different art installations from contemporary artists. It was a great experience that at times was enlightening, pleasant, very fun and mindblowing, but scary and creepy too - as art can and should make you feel uncomfortable at times. Here is a place where you can actually spend some quality time inside one of Yayoi Kusamas infinity rooms - previously I had to battle hundreds of Seattleites to be able to spend 30 seconds inside one, here I was by myself for over 5 minutes, and what a difference it made! The only thing I wasnt impressed with was the food at the coffee shop - expensive and not really quality. Not worth it.
Interesting is an understatement. Very inter-active and eye opening. Worth the time for sure.
This place is weird. Some of the exhibits are great and some I just didnt get. Art is subjective, so maybe thats the point. One of the exhibits you crawl through, so wear pants you dont care about.
My absolute fav artist has a permanent exhibit here. Its a unique magical place you will get lost in! Three different buildings, Im a member for a reason as I fell in love with it
I love the mission behind this place! Especially loved All is Not Forgotten by Patrick Robideau and the James Turrell rooms (though sadly Pleiades was closed when we were there). When I told people I’d gone here for the first time, they hesitantly all said “...so how was it?” The general consensus seems to be that your enjoyment of this place greatly varies depending on the current exhibits.$20 is a bit steep for what you get if you ask me, but I do love what this museum is doing for local artists.
Best contemporary art gallery in this region of the country. I recommend planning to be here for a few hours to really explore it. The Turrell floor is worth the ticket alone.
Well the Mattress factory museum cant be described. Its weird and some of the exhibitions might blow your mind. Of course I loved the polka dots rooms. But I really enjoyed all the exhibits even if Im not sure if I understood most of them...if there is something to understand. Its definitely confusing, in a positive artistic way. Almost provoking. If you have time and there arent many people before you, you should try the 15 minutes in a completely dark room. You have a lot of self control and rationality if you wont start seeing things and lights!
I found the pieces in the main building really interesting and worth a visit. But I didnt care for the works in the other two buildings.
Every room is an adventure for the senses. I love how space is interpreted, and often transformed. The staff has always been helpful in being able to make the most of each exhibit. Its an amazing resource. Reminds me of PS 101 from my old stomping grounds.
Probably best appreciated by art buffs. $20 for exhibits might be a bit steep for a casual browser on Sunday. Get there early as some exhibits require timed entrance tickets.
Modern art is tricky. Sometimes I Love my visits to this museum. Other times Im underwhelmed. If you do go, check out Randy Land just down the street! Modern art with a twist!
Amazing art installments
Mind blowing place to get inspired from artists by artists. Thank you.
