Fireborn Studios is a veritable gem of Pittsburgh. Dan and his teachers provide instruction from beginning to end with great depth and breadth. Instructors teach proper techniques for throwing, trimming, and glazing. Different pottery styles from different cultures are discussed nearly every class.While many pottery studios might offer great instruction, Fireborn is unique because of the quality of the glazes and firing. Dan has decades of experience running the high fire kiln, which I believe takes over 12 hours to operate for a single firing. Countless times Ive glazed a piece I was unhappy with, only to find that the finished glaze added an astonishing beauty.Dan is dedicated to running a quality studio. If you show up willing to learn, improve, and show appreciation for the art of pottery, he will appreciate you too.Attached are photos of original work that showcases the quality of the glazes. New students benefit from the knowledge of the experienced potters and the experienced potters get the benefit of covering basic skills again. The instructors are professional, patient and have a wealth of knowledge. They tailor instruction for skill level and are willing to give one-on-one suggestions in throwing, pot decoration and glazing.Owner Dan Vitos work is incredible. The gallery is an absolute pottery wonderland! His glazes are vibrant, dynamic and unique. Dan is always making new pieces and experimenting on new glazes. Ive been taking pottery classes at Fireborn since I retired from Carnegie Mellon a couple of years ago. I looked at a number of different possibilities but decided to give Fireborn a try after looking into the shop. If you havent visited the shop you might want to do so. It is by far the finest pottery shop Ive seen anywhere--and Ive been a regular pottery client wherever Ive traveled. I knew right away that the best place to study making pottery would be a place that makes and sells fine pots. Dan Vito himself is a master potter with special skills in glazing. One feature of his classes is the availability of a very wide range of amazing glazes. Dans staff includes several first rate teachers. Pottery making is just complex enough to keep the mind (and hands) occupied, and just accessible enough for you to be making beautiful and functional pots by the end of your first 8 week session.

Interesting place

I attended an open studio here with a loved one who takes classes at the studio. I had also been to the studio for a gallery opening. Dan is super cool and his wife is really nice. Glazes are gorgeous. Had a really awesome time playing around with clay on the wheel! Really appreciated the chance to learn a little about throwing and see how things are done for something that is so important to my loved one. :) I definitely recommend Fireborn whether its for classes or to purchase quality, gorgeous pottery. thanks!

I just took a Saturday Workshop with Dacey Haughwout and I was once again impressed with his skills and instruction abilities! Dacey is exceptionally talented and personable. He guided the class with strategies for success and consistency. I was able to practice a different wheel throwing style to preserve my hands and wrists. We also experimented with surface design options. It was a lovely experience at Fireborn Studios! (I do wish we could have kept one or two of our best pieces of the day, but I respect that practice makes perfect!)

Wonderful classes. I started coming here after my wife took my kids and left. she took everything from me, including all of my pottery. i was depressed & lonely. i started coming here and found happiness again. i am now remarried with one of my favorites vases. thank you for making me who i am today.

Truly authentic pottery. Most is made by the owner himself (Dan), and the rest is made by other American craftsmen.You can even ask for a tour of the studio if you like :)

The pottery studio is great to work in and well maintained. The glazes are exceptional and can make an ok piece into a great one. Dacey is an excellent instructor, and I have learned a lot. The classes are helpful for beginners, returning students, or even advances levels. Dacey throws examples of anything youre working on and show a demo step-by-step.The gallery is beautiful and a great place to buy a gift. There are other specialties such as glass blowing, and jewelry making.

I have been taking classes here for several years and cant say enough nice things about Fireborn! Dan and all of the teachers are incredibly knowledgeable and incredibly talented. Even if you have no interest in taking classes, you should stop by the gallery and see some of the amazing work that is sold.

I signed up for a class in January, thinking it might be something new Id try for a session. That weekly Wednesday morning class became such a bright spot: An opportunity to break away from my computer and to learn with my hands and use my brain in a completely new way. Classes arent grouped by experience or skill level, so I found myself learning as much from my classmates -- many of whom have decades of experience -- as from my patient and skilled instructor, Dacey.My family loves the pieces that I bring home, but for me, the experience was less about what I produced and more about being in the studio, working side-by-side with others, each of us deep into our own work, but with spontaneous conversations. Kids do this and its called parallel play, but I think adults really dont have this opportunity.The owner Dan is very organized and has a system for everything which makes it much easier as a newcomer to learn how to jump in and ride the waves with everyone else.That first session turned into another, turned into another, turned into another. I am grateful to have found Fireborn and glad I took the initiative to try something new.

Dan Vito makes wonderful pottery and sells it and othersterrific pieces as well. I often go in to buy gifts and end upbuying even more for myself. Fascinating glazes and explanationsof the work, the pieces are lovely, durable and useful. Highly recommended.

The gallery showcases Dan Vitos work but also sells work by other local potters and has a good selection of handblown glass.Pottery classes are offered during the day or in the evening, with lots of flexibility built in to accommodate busy schedules. The instruction is fabulous, the glaze selection is extensive, and firings are consistently spot on.

Ive been taking a pottery class there and I love it! Were in a small group, we are fairly free to do what we want and our teacher Dacey is here to help, answer questions and show us the way.

The pottery and glass are beautiful and very reasonably priced. The classes are excellent with a broad mix of skill levels and styles. Dan is extremely helpful and provides a great atmosphere for learning the basics or throwing and exploring your personal creativity.
