Worth getting the season of tickets. Even when I don’t know a show, I end up liking it. Really great production and stage design. Everyone is friendly and truly a great experience every time. It’s fun seeing a lot of the same actors in different roles.
This is a wonderful theatre close to Old City Philadelphia. Their season main stage shows are always great and they have a wonderful line up in their Independence Studio on 3 as well. There are a ton of great restaurants nearby, so you can definitely make this part of an awesome date night!
Amazing show! We went to see Young Frankenstein and we were not disappointed. The cast was incredible and the scenes were brilliant and funny. The performances were unbelievably good. So impressed! Five star cast all around! I highly recommend Young Frankenstein!
Oldest operating theater in the US. Have gone twice, both plays have been extremely well acted/directed/staged.The only negative to this theater is that its chairs/rows were built for prior generations. The chairs and rows are very narrow, so much so that my 57 self almost had my knees stuck against the chair in front of me. I wish the box seats were available for purchase, it would make it much easier to come to see shows frequently. Otherwise everything is great. Either way, well be back!†
I just need everyone to know that I was hired full time by Walnut Street Theatre last season. Upon signing my contract I was greeted with contempt. Contempt that my hair had went from bleach blonde to silver in the time they hired me to the time I signed my contract. Now it was never expressed to me in my interview that they had a negative view of alternative (how the Gms put it) hair styles. But he went on to explain to me that the subscribers expected to see a certain type of person and when they saw someone with an alternative style or a person of color they were mean to them. Now he wasnt saying this out of concern for me but out of concern for the Walnuts perception within their subscription base. They told me that I needed to think about how I approached being in a position where I was a manager.I literally decided to quit within this conversation. Not because they challenged the color of my hair but because the Walnut Street Theatre advocates indifference. I agreed to start this position at the Walnut earlier than the initial start date because the person who held the position before me wanted to leave early. I was starting a job 2 months earlier than I initially agreed and they were mad at my alternative stlye. They were the ones who hired me super quickly but couldnt handle my perceived alternative identity
The venue is very nice and is convenient to mass transit. A very old theater that has been well cared for. Excellent sight lines, even from the mezzanine. While I was not a real fan of the production I saw there, that has nothing to do with the facility itself.
Went with class trip. Definitely got us in the Christmas/Holiday spirit. Actors were great, theater personnel were very helpful and the theater was very comfortable.
Beautiful theatre. Oldest in America, so lots of history to read about there as well. Not hugely handicapped accessible. No elevator to lower floor. There is one to the upper mezzanine. I didnt see many places where you could have someone sit in theatre with a wheelchair. However, they are planning on building a whole new section to the original theatre. I have no doubt that they will take some of those things into consideration when planning.
Saw Young Frankenstein tonight. Great show, the comedy was awesome. Actors and Actresses were also amazing. I loved the light and prop displays. Also in enjoy how they used the whole theater as there stage. Only reason Im giving them a 4 star is the seating. You have no leg space. Thank goodness no one was sitting next to me so I could stretch out. Also didnt have anything really nice in the gift shop. But I would go back to see other show! Graet performance!
Maria and I go to the Walnut every other month and always have a wonderful time. The history of the building is awe inspiring. The serve alcohol; always a plus . Not all the shows are great but all the evenings we go are. After the shows we go down the street to Stellas for fantastic pizza and of course more alcohol. Great evening out!
This was my first experience here. My friend had tickets for Young Frankenstein. Excellent show! The lines move quick. The seats are easy to find. Each row is elevated enough to see over the person in front of you.The music, acting, singing and special effects were wonderful!I enjoyed it immensely!
We saw shrek the musical. It was awesome. We were able to get half price tickets. On the day of the shows all tickets are reduced, only at the box office.
Enjoyed a great show (Young Frankenstein) at the oldest theater in the country. The theater is beautiful and the staff was friendly. Only issue were the tight seats. Not much leg room. Over all, highly recommend.
The staff is always friendly. Their show productions are top notch. There really isnt a bad seat in the house.
Small, friendly, cozy, easy-going. I highly recommend seeing a show at this theater. I was able to get tickets at a reasonable price, and you get what you pay for! Even though we were in the top section, the views of the set were still great, and it was immersive nonetheless. I was surprised to learn how much history this place has too. I would highly recommend seeing any show here. They really know how to put on a show.
What a beautiful piece of history. The play was very well done. Loved the costuming.
Dreadful play - woman of no importance. Well, the acting was adequate even a brilliant actor could not save this play, tortured pans, long monologues and pointless scenes completely overshadowed a few funny jokes and a couple of better then average performances.Add to that a horribly overpriced concessions and you get a totally wasted evening.
I just say I was very surprised by this theater. The chairs were spacious, and comfy. They are all in good shape too. The staff was also cooperative and friendly. The music was also superb Finally i would like to recommend this theater to all.
Subscribed to their independent theater and so far only seen one show, Steve Martins Meteor Shower; and I am in love!! Cant wait for the rest of the line up.
Love attending shows here! My family and I see A Christmas Carol here each year together. Several members of my family then get season tickets for the rest of the year. I try to attend as many shows with them as a possibly can. I always have a lovely time. There is so much talent to be seen here!
Superb acting that is like being on Broadway New York!!!!I recently got the opportunity to see Shrek The Musical and it was now one of my favorite Broadway plays of all time!! The entire cast was Amazingly talented and it was a great and wonderful show! Also the theater was extremely clean, decent sized and really comfortable. Would highly recommend going although I wish they extended Shrek for a few months longer!!!
Plays are usually musicals by well known playwrights. Theater is rather Spartan but cozy. All seats have a clear view of stage. Have been upstairs and down and this is true of both areas. Chairs are adequate. I have a season subscription and generally enjoy the plays a lot.
I was invited to see the play, The Curious incident of the Dog in the night-time. The play (a wonderful performance) was at the Walnut Street Theatre. What a lovely theatre to see a play. The theatre, I was told, is one of the oldest theatres. Its really a beautifully kept theatre. Its clean, decorated with beautiful pictures of actors and actresses from different eras. It has a nice Cafe with refreshments and coffee and tea and cakes that can be purchased. John, the server at the cafe was oh so very nice as well as another woman selling water and refreshments in another area. Our seats were in the mezzanine and we saw the stage perfectly. Im so happy I had the opportunity to see a great performance at a beautiful theatre and hope to attend more performances. Truly a wonderful place!
Americas Oldest Theatre! I have been attending shows here for over 20 years and the talent, from actors/singers to sets to orchestra to choreography is always incredible. Seemingly overshadowed by big sister city NYC, one should never count out the talent Philadelphia has to offer, and it is regularly on display here at the Walnut. In terms of navigation, there are lots of one way streets so plan before you go, but artistically, this is a gem in Philadelphia musical theater . As of this post, go see Shrek the musical, playing through January 5, 2020. So much energy and such talent. You must have a sense of humor and a knowledge of pop culture and, ahem, potty humor (farts have a dedicated song!). Sets were amazing and, of course, the story is perfect. Help keep the Arts alive, take any kid you know to see this particular show and get them hooked on the joy of musical theater!
I have gone to the Walnut Street Theater for 20 years and it is always memorable. It isnt just the oldest theater in America, but maybe the best theater value in America. As a production theater The Walnut seems to always out due any preconceived notions, and provide a wonderful experience. eNJoy
The actors of A Woman of No Importance were engaging and entertaining. This was an excellent rendition.
The showShreck was great. The music and dancing great also. A very enjoyable show
Historically significant place. Staff is great. Convienent parking.
Had a fun time at an amazing performance of Young Frankenstein. I got to share the experience with my fiance and my bestie. We enjoyed seeing the history of the theater from the pictures and descriptions on the walls. The theater was also very comfortable with the air circulating.
All the shows are wonderful...we have been subscribers for years. The orchestra, the sets and costumes are fabulous. Also great service when exchanging tickets.
Caught a show here on a Saturday, found the parking situation very convenient (compared to most things in the city) if not somewhat disorganized, and the location excellent for a night out. The seating was great, the service was good at the convenient consession stands, and the show was phenomenal. Only downside was dealing with Ticketmaster to see the show.
Nice theater, small and intimate but not tiny cramped 100 year old seats.
I enjoyed the Sunday matinee and would recommend coming here for plays. My brother was in it, but it was very enjoyable! Looking for something to do Sunday afternoon, try it!!
I have so much fun being a volunteer... I am so proud to be apart of a wonderful theatre such as the Walnut Street theatre.......
The show was wonderful, the three stars is because there is NO leg room in those seats! Men beware if you are over 511.
Saw Gift of Magi. Excellent play with some incredibly talented actors. Love the small ambiance of theatre
Always a wonderful experience! Warm and cozy, with great first rate productions. Young Frankenstein was hilarious! Talented group of actors.
My first time at this theater. I thoroughly enjoyed it. We sat in the upper balcony. You can see the entire stage. The sound was great. We saw the Little Mermaid. My grandkids had a wonderful time. They sat through the whole show. It was very interesting seeing the pictures iof all the stars on the walks. They sell drinks alcohol too and snacks. They have a parking lot directly across from the theater. I am going to see A Christmas Carol. I encourage everyone to give it a try.
Always first class!! Enjoyable every timeA great night outThanks God Bless
Wow! Such an incredible theatre! I came to see Mamma Mia! And it was fantastic! The sound quality is superb and it is totally worth it. We had an incredible view and there is no bad seat. I would love to come back and attend more shows! All of the staff here were also very friendly and helpful. The seats are pretty small and you dont have much leg room but its hard to even think about that during the play! Mamma Mia was a good show, however the cast was all white and there was no diversity. There were only 3 poc in the whole play and they were backup dancers.
One of the best investment in my marriage. Weve had season tickets for both upstairs and main theater for a few years now. This gives us a monthly date night that we really look forward to. The plays are Awesome! Such talent, we laugh, we cry, we are always moved. The music, and sets are stunning. We so enjoy our evening there and continue to chat about the experience for days and days afterward. And to be honest there is something humbling knowing that Walnut Street is the oldest theater in the country, that people like Thomas Jefferson and LaFayette have attended. Heady stuff.
Small but nice theater. Shows are well done for a smaller theater.
Fantastic theater. The shows are the very best. Grear talent. Just a great time. I highly recommend!!!
Thurgood Marshall play was very good. The actor did a really good job
I have been a Walnut Street Theatre subscriber for about 13 years and I love it! The performers bring the shows to life! Tonights show, Legally Blond was by far, one of the best!! Everyone did an absolutely fantastic job! I cant wait to go back and see it with my girlfriends again!
Love the walnut. Not so much the show. Left at intermission.
A great theater with great productions. The theater itself is comfortable, cozy, and affordable. I saw Legally Blonde here with a friend and we had an amazing time watching the actors make this production look effortless, exciting, and fun. Ill definitely be looking into attending more shows here soon.
Love this theatre. Have been a subscriber for years. Saw Young Frankenstein tonight. Never laughed harder or longer. Great job.
The oldest theater in the US. A lot of history. Great entertainment. Not a bad seat in the house. We have been subscribers for at lesst 20 years.
Classic old school theater, great show, however absolutely no leg room at all in the upper regions...needs seat repositioning as part of upcoming expansion to be more senior and handicapped friendly.
Great show,, we saw Shrek, the musical, costumes were amazing and so was the set. Very well done. Long play. Lot of actors
I often visited here for entertainment. The place was super cool and the infrastructure was amazing. I was amazed with work done by the management. I would like to recommend this place if anyone want to go for chill out.
Have been a subscriber for years. Great shows and lits of talent
The shows here are awesome! Always amazing service.
Saw Shrek. Very well done. Comfortable
It is a little dated but that is part of the charm. We sat in Box B which was great because there were only two other people in there. Chairs were comfortable. Worth the extra money for the box seats. We saw Legally Blonde which was great. My only complaint was because of the balcony above us, when there was something high up on the stage, you couldnt see it really well. Drinks were pricey but it is always like that with theaters. Will return.
Love this theatre!!!! Went with a group of students to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. The performers were great and the show was really cool. They also provided audio description devices to some of my students.
Terrific venue, great production (Shrek) although the script licensed by the rights holders is not up to either the Broadway or Touring version. WST did a terrific job of producing what they were given.
It was in a good location, easy places to walk to before the show and the show was great!
Great show. Very good acoustics. Absolutely love the shows. Definitely recommend!
We were in the small theater. Very small and intimate. Great experience.
Excellent production of the play A Woman of No Importance
I took a fun musical theater dance class, Im hoping to take more classes in three future. Ive never seen any of the shows, but have heard great things!
Young Frankenstein was a good production. The talented cast had wonderful voices and the dancing was great. You will laugh!
Its the oldest theater in the U.S. Comfortable seats and a great view from the right orchestra section. We saw a comedy play that was outstanding! The actors were quite talented, and Ill definitely go back to see another show.
The staff is very rude. Make sure you have tix dates and times worked out bc there is never a manger on duty and the attitude of the staff (especially Ava) is terrible.
Theater was nice you could see very well.
I have seen a several shows and I love them all. ️️
Never disappointed with any shows we have seen there. Young Frankenstein was one of the funniest with some of the best music!
I rather like this venue for a show. More manageable than other massive places and I believe this is the oldest theater in the country. Lots of places to eat around it as well.
Its cool and all but I get bored while watching plays and stuff
A great theater, I just wish it was more accessible for people with physical limitations.
Nice and cozy theater. Thank you for the military discount! We enjoyed the Young Frankenstein show very much!
Wonderful homey feeling every time you go there and the most amazing entertainers!
Went to see the Curious Incident of the Dog in the night-time. Absolutely mind bending production of this popular novel. Every aspect was perfect! Highly recommend this production in this historic venue!
Small venue so everything seat is good. Just saw Shrek and it was very good. But the lady behind the gift shop is very rude and pretentious; Her co-workers were not.
Season ticket holder for over a decade. Talent at the Walnut never disappoints.
The theater was excellent the actors were wonderful but the seats for room wise were awful and very tight...I recomend the balcony seats row H seat numbers 205 and that area towards the wall..
Very nice, classy place. The crowd is usually older, but thats probably just because its theatre. Ive seen some great plays here, but others were not for me. The venue itself however is beautiful, and I have no complaints about it.
First time at Studio 3. Great intimate venue. Meteor Shower, great show & cast.
From Shrek to Holiday Inn to Hairspray to Les Miserables, Americas oldest theater is a great place to watch an even greater assortment of shows!
Had a great experience at The Walnut Street Theatre for me & my wife and thoroughly enjoyed the Broadway show A Comedy Of Tenors. Looking forward to the next show in April, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Thanks to all for a wonderful time for the both of us.
Well maintained theater...tradtional and contemporary at the same time
We absolutely love going to the shows here. The productions are very high quality. It is absolutely worth it to get a membership, so definitely consider that. The only downside is there isnt much legroom at all, but you get so involved in the shows that you dont notice it. The line for the womens restroom is of course very long at intermission, but there are several stalls, so it moves pretty fast. Again, absolutely love the shows. Definitely recommend!
Well worth the trip. Great shows and friendly people.
