This is a really fun little reef to explore. My two boys (12 & 14) and I enjoyed an hour or so playing on the various structures. There were a variety of interesting fish and the visibility was 10 feet or so. We took the paddle boards now, because its about 500 ft off the shore. just make sure to have the triangle and square on the shore lined up as you paddle out. You will see the reef as shadows and you know youre there. I wouldnt attempt to do this when the winds are over eight miles per hour or so.
Swam out a good way, but could not locate this reef, as there is no marker. Beach and waters were amazingly clear emerald blue. Did see lots of schools of white fish that looked like dark clouds floating along. Just wish there was more space and direction to reef.
A pretty cool reef. Its quite a little swim out there but luckily some divers were out there and had a diver down flag floating above them. The water was clear when I went (July) and I saw a good deal of fish. Its tough to snorkel down to get a closer look at the fish but it was a good experience.
Water was to sizzy we count find a reef
We have been wanting to try snorkeling here for a while. We did some research and picked a day where the swell was low (1.5ft) and came right at the peak of low tide. Despite trying to optimize everything in our favor, the water visibility was still very low and we were completely unable to find the artificial reefs. Visibility is deceptive...it looks clear from the shore, but in the water visibility is maybe 3 or 4 feet at best. There is a map at the entrance supposedly showing the artificial reef area (500ft directly perpendicular to entrance, and 25x100ft in total dimension), but that didnt help. We went out to the very edge of the second shoal, well past 500ft, and still didnt locate it despite swimming around for about 30 minutes. They should have the reef marked with a buoy(s) to help locate it; or at the very least give exact GPS coordinates.
The surf was a little ruff so we couldnt get to the reef but beautiful white sand beaches. Very little public beach space here
Proximity to Pensacola pass can make currents too high to maintain position at the site.
The waters around Perdido Key and Orange Beach can be hit or miss even with the best conditions. I have had great snorkeling in this area, but not as often as other areas on the Gulf Coast. I have lots of snorkeling videos and information on many places in this area for great snorkeling, just Google TheToneman Gulf Coast Snorkeling for links to my YouTube channel, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram ;)
Water was too rough to snorkel still had a great time getting totally skint back off the liquor. Hella doinked on the beach
Not the best location to go snorkeling. Give us a call and we will gladly point you in the right direction.
Poorly marked, surrounded by condo snobs and theirspecial reserved beach spots, always poor water visibility.
