I love the Umatilla National Forest, just got back from a four-day camp out, just off of the Olive Lake Road past Dale Oregon. The timber is so beautiful and thick up there and I had good access to the creek, there are several campgrounds on that road to Olive Lake, all are a good choice.

Ice lake was beautiful. Not for beginning mountain climbers. Mosquitoes are in abundance at the lake so carry a repellent of some sort.

Quiet, with well maintained roads, good camping spots. Flood has washed away parts of the road after the national forest sign, so those camp sites are unavailable

I grew up running around in the Umatilla national forest! Spent a lot of time with my now deceased parents there. One of my favorite places on earth. Lots to do and see, hike, hunt, ride horses, swim, canoe, four wheel.... you’re only limited by your imagination

People seem to have lost all respect while using our beautiful forests. We recently encountered people dumping their black tank without burying it in a campsite; using ATVs to tear up pristine meadows and riding roads that are closed to motorized vehicles; and leaving garbage. A few bad apples will get everyone kicked out of the forests.

Beautiful, diverse forest with plenty of space to get away from it all. 1.4 million acres of land owned by the American people and managed by the US Forest Service with offices in Pendleton, Walla Walla, Pomeroy, Ukiah, and Heppner. Some highlights include the fish derby at Jubilee Lake, hiking the North Fork Umatilla Wilderness, camping at Umatilla Forks campground, hiking to the Oregon Butte lookout tower, and skiing at Ski Bluewood resort. This National Forest offers rangelands, open Ponderosa pine savannahs, dense dark grand fir and Engelmann spruce forest, and rocky, windswept mountaintops. The Forest Service employees manage wildfire, forest health, outdoor recreation and education, water, wildlife and vegetation, cultural heritage, & law enforcement on these public lands.

I am more familiar with the Washington portion of the National Forest. The mountains are unique in that they make up a giant basalt-layered plateau cut with deep canyons. The forest appears to be horizontally striated because of the eroded layers. Skyline Drive makes a fantastic exploration in summer. Great hikes abound. Oregon Butte makes a scenic early summer hike.

This review is for the Tucannon River trail.Any day spent outside is a great day, even in 105° temperatures. This hike was a bit cooler, being near the Tucannon River, but, as much of the way is still exposed, it was hot. Plenty of places along the way to cool ones heels, though. This is a walk in the woods and well worth it. Solitude is assured and wildlife abound. Deer and wild turkeys were encountered as were an incredible number of butterflies. Some nice campsites along the way. Blueberries ripe though a tad tart. Be forewarned on the drive there: once you reach the fork the road is incredibly rough and rocky.

I didnt really get to stop and enjoy the park as much as I would have liked to, power for driving through the park was beautiful and as far as I could tell on this trip that was well maintained. There were a few Vista points you could pull off and take pictures which was nice because not a lot of parks have that option. The roads in this area are also fairly good.

As a member of the OYCC and a supporter of the United States Forest Service I can say that this is one of the most beautiful forests I have ever seen. There are plenty of campgrounds here that offer everything from ATV and bike trails to some of the most beautiful hiking trails Ive ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I would recommend that you explore Olive Lake.
