1999; Jane MacDonald Adrian (landscape) and Antje Hammer (artist)275 South Raymond AvenueCentral Park*play area & tile benchesDimensions: 30 diameterArtist team Jane MacDonald Adrian and Antje Hammer collaborated to design this play environment that explores elements of the natural Pasadena landscape and the citys history. The artists goal was to capture childrens imaginations through the textures, shapes and colors that appear throughout the landscaped play area which echoes the shape of Pasadenas Arroyo Seco. Central Park Play Environment is composed of four main elements, each representing a different aspect of Pasadena: the play equipment, a maze-like path, Rose Bowl inspired sand area, and the ceramic tile art benches. A bright red fire engine, a piece of play equipment, reflects the fire station across the street. Colorful geometric shapes decorate the maze representing different elements of the environment, such as the Earth, sky and water. Each with its own theme, the ceramic tiles on the serpentine benches offer a narrative about Pasadena through representation of the past, the sciences, the arts, nature and places in the city. These tiles, along with the symbols incorporated into the play environment, serve an educational purpose to park visitors.
