Approx site on Sweeney Ridge where Gaspar de Portolas men discovered the bay on 1st Nov 1769. A large, inscribed standing stone commemorates this. (Its possible that the first European to see the Bay was in fact the English explorer/pirate Sir Francis Drake exactly 200 years before the Spaniards).Youll have to hike to here. The official bronze plaque marking this event - aka California Historical Landmark #394 - is in a more accessible spot: its over 2 miles away in beside Highway 1 in Pacifica, close to the statue of Portola whos facing this ridge and the Bay.
A nice piece of history to go and see. Pretty awesome this was discovered in an expedition before the US was even a country! Pretty cool to experience.
Try to go during sunny day that way you will be able to see Pacifica pier.
Could be nicer with paved paths and better maintained.
I never knew this point was where San Francisco Bay was first discovered by the Portola Expedition. Historical.
Great view
