Amazing preservation of some of historys most prestigious ships from all corners of the world... In scale model form. The detail that was put in to these models is beyond compare and the staff was very willing to help and provide details. Plus the walls are covered with some of the nicest maritime art Ive ever seen. Take a few hours, if youre in the area, to come see this nicely-presented museum.
What the museum lacks in size, it more than makes up for in specificity content. So many model ships and really good art work. A nice little gem of the Oxnard area that you easily lose yourself in for a few hours. Grant not for everyone, but if you like models, Navy and seagoing in general I would high recommend a visit if you are nearby.
Dont let the inconspicuous look of the museums building or its out of the beaten path location mislead you into thinking this isnt an important museum. If you appreciate serious fine art and precise sail ship models this is the place. We were astonished by the quality of their collection. Their oldest painting is dated 1622 by a Dutch painter Adam Willaerts. Another significant painting they have on display is by Eugene-Louis Boudin. A mentor of Monet, the painting shows the very influence which led to the famous Impression Sunrise and everything that followed. Also on display are excellent contemporary paintings by John Stobart and David Thimgan. Many more excellent maritime paintings are going to make it worth your time.
I was happy with the content of the museum but I was not happy with the way we were treated. If you have young kids expect to be yelled at the moment you enter the gift shop. My son wanted to buy a foam sword with his own money and the lady behind the desk yelled rudely several times DONT TOUCH! We will not be going back. The upper deck is kid friendly but the staff needs to lighten up and realize that if they want people to spend money at their establishment they need to be polite to customers. I understand not touching the paintings and models but non-breakable merchandise in the gift shop should not be off limits for kids.As far as what is inside the kid space, youll find a model of a viking long boat, Columbus ships, Cabrillos ship and chumash models. Its a great place to bring history to life for your kids but beware.
This evenings presentation shipwrecks and rescues was first rate. Both interesting and educational. Both presenters were excellent and hospitality of the museum with generous refreshments made for a memorable evening.
A great museum with knowledgeable docents. You must visit during their Art Comes Alive events. No matter what, its always a great place to visit.
More of a model ship museum but there is a pretty great collection of well-detailed model ships there and some fun exhibits. Also a pretty impressive collection of European seascape paintings. I wanted to learn more about the harbors in Oxnard and Port Hueneme however.
Amazing preservation of some of historys most prestigious ships from all corners of the world.
I love this place. It was 1st coming here. I didnt even know it was here and Ive lived in Oxnard all my life. Only got there with 45 min to spare since they close @4pm. It is an amazing place. The gentleman who works there is very knowledgeable and plight and extremely pleasant to talk with. $7 entrance fee every 3rd Thursday free. Free parking. Totally with it. Will be going back when i am able to go earlier to have more time to really take in all the amazing details and history. I family must go.
Amazing preservation of some of historys most prestigious ships from all corners of the world.
My three year old and I visit many local museums as part of the Passport 2 History program. They range in their interestingness, but the Channel Islands Maritime Museum is certainly one of the best! Its not huge on the level of a Natural History Museum or Getty... but its larger than many of these one-room local history museums. There are two floors that each have a large room or two.Youll see many ships and paintings of ships... but what makes this even more fun is that they have many things for children to do! They have a play mobile pirate ship for the kids to play with that kept my sons attention for a LONG time! They also have a selfie station where you take a picture in front of a cannon, complete with wigs, hats and costumes to try on! There was no one else in the museum when we went, so we could take our time and really have fun! Upstairs has other neat things to do, and even better... beautiful views of the water! They had a coloring station for kids that had a handful of plastic toy whales that kept my sons attention for a LONG time! They had special lighting that attempted to recreate and under water feel, and he had a great time playing with the toy whales there! They also had some whale bones, which Im always fascinated by! Especially the size of a whale vertebrate! While many of the Passport museums are free... this one is $7/adult. So that is probably why its a bit cooler than many others. We had a great time. There is free parking, and not far from Ventura, so there are plenty of things to do around to make for a great day trip!
Wonderful Museum please everybody go check it out that. Just to let you know it probably be cheaper to park at the USS Midway parking area instead of feeding the meters out in front of the museum.
Very interesting museum. Best collection of maritime art Ive ever encountered. Docents are very knowledgeable.
Interesting little maritime museum, with good variety in their collection. Great location, and easy to spend an hour or two here. The staff is super friendly and helpful. I didnt even know this place existed until I showed up for the annual whale festival. This place is a hidden gem!
This place is great! The guides are so knowledgeable and their excitement is infectious! If you have any interest in boats, models, and/or history you could do much worse than this lovely museum!
Super cool with alot of amazing history of the harbor
Really great selection of model to scale ships, wonderful docents with loads of interesting information
Ask for Klaus to show u around.... Hes super knowledgeable
This museum is located next to the harbor, a beautiful location. There were school children having a field trip and they were having a great time. We were not expecting a guided tour but Paul met us right after we paid to enter the museum. He was fun and knowledgeable. Great place for everyone
I really like this place. Lots to see. Well maintained. Lot of very good ship models and paintings.
Good place to visit, good artwork and model ships built from scratch. Amazing place.
The scavenger hunt was awesome! My nephew Noah loved the experience. The wonderful women volunteers were extremely nice!
Nice and clean, cause I do the cleaning
Museum was great kids loved it! Will be going back soon!
Great art, model ships, other maritime artifacts, and wonderful docents.
I absolutely love this museum. Do yourself a favor and make time to have a docent take you through the exhibits. The stories about maritime history are just fantastic! My favorite pieces are the Thomas Hoyne paintings. Every mariner will recognize just how accurate his depiction of the sea is. Ill keep coming back for more!
There was much to look at and read. I was really impressed by their huge collection of model ships made with high detail. The staff was friendly and helpful with questions.
Interesting out of the ordinary place, friendly people
Went to see the Hawaiian Cheiftan... Awesome crew and the staff inside the museum was friendly and welcomed me in!
Beautiful paintings, amazing models, informed docents and interactive things upstairs for kids. Ill have to go back to check out the gift store, looked like good variety of quality trinkets & beachy momentous.
Incredible museum. Loved the detail of the small scale replica ships.
Great experience. Highly recommended, if you like this kind of thing.
Chowderfest was da bomb! Lots of good chowder, munchies and brews.
Fantastic museum with very friendly and knowledgeable docents. Takes 45 minutes to see it all.
The museum staff are very knowledgeable!
Large collection of incredibly detailed ship models, with friendly and knowledgeable staff and docents. Well worth a visit.
Cool models. Free third Thursdays
A wonderful Channel Islands Harbor waterfront museum with naval art, ships-in-bottles, and rotating exhibits. Always something new on their calendar of events.
So enjoyed the museum pieces and helpful
Really lovely - tons of intricate ship models, nice artwork including a rotating exhibit, beautiful setting, friendly staff. Worth a visit.
This is one of the best maritime museums anywhere. Learn how Dana Point got its name. See the history of maritime discovery and tradition. See models of the most historic tall ships of all time.
Nice person there and tons of boat models and good view!
Beautiful Old Masters paintings and spectacular models. Allow plenty of time.
Wow it is brilliant cruise.
World class artwork in a beautiful harbor setting.
Do not take kids here! One old man violently pulled my daughter away from rining a bell....if kids are not to ring the damn bell rope it off or put it higher. The same man scolded another kid for looking at a VIEW MASTER. Yeah.. That pricless view master is at risk! My kids who have been to countless museums and have never touched or damaged anything were fallowed and harrased by the staff. Kids were not alowed to touch the kid stuff. If they were trying to make this a more popular museum by trying to attract familys...YOU FAIL. Make a kids room of items they can touch and play with apart frim things to just look at. Get rid of that creepy old man befor you get sued. He put his hands on no less that 4 diffrent kids in an aggressive manner. If i got him on video Id take you to cort for how he yanked my daughter! If you love your kids do not go here. There are better things you can do with your time and $
Love the New location, used to take my dates their every once in a while.
Its very accessible. Also there are restaurants and shops with very nice views of the marina. Free parking everywhere.
The doesent (I spelled that wrong) was awesome I have not had a great history lesson in years and the chickies at the front desk were hilarious with there fighting with each other. Was a great time I (sorry) we highly recommend a trip there!

Nice museum great location on harbour
It was very interesting and cool going to the Maritime Museum
It is more of an art museum than a maritime museum. Lots of nautical paintings and ship models, few maritime artifacts...
