So the first time we went it was awesome. The guide was terrific. Really knew the house and family history. I was so inspired I took a friend the next weekend. The second time the guide was nice but her thick mask and accent and voice made it virtually impossible to understand and she told no stories of the family or the house. She did try to.pull her mask away to make herself understandable but that made us uncomfortable. The tour was supposed to be 45 minutes and we were done in 30. So disappointed as I had really pumped it up for my friend.
Really enjoyed the tour! It is sad that, unlike the Newport Mansions (RI), this historical building has not been restored to a better degree/state... Tour guide, Barbara, was very knowledgeable and showed lots of love for the mansion. Hoping they’re able to get funding/grants to bring this grand mansion to full renovation!
The Lockwood Mathews Mansion is undoubtedly a gorgeous attraction and a major historical and architectural treasure of Norwalk, Connecticut!!!The Mansion is a Second Empire Style country house that was built by financial and railroad tycoon, Legrand Lockwood during the 1860’s.On Sunday, October 25th, 2020, my wife and I had the pleasure of touring the Lockwood mansion. We viewed and learned much about the home’s innovative architecture, its magnificent furnishings which included well crafted sculptures and tapestries and also learned about the interesting lives of the home’s former inhabitants, ranging from Legrand Lockwood and it’s 2nd owner, Charles D. Mathews, a wealthy New Yorker. Our tour guide was great and and displayed immense knowledge concerning the home’s history. My wife and I very much enjoyed our tour experience, and we highly recommend that all visitors to Norwalk take the time to see and visit this wonderful National Historic Landmark!!!
The amazing thing about this mansion is that it pre dates Newport! The house is magnificent any time of year but at the holidays when it is decorated the house exudes a special charm. The collections are amazing. The behind the scenes tour of the upstairs where the staff lived should not be missed. The china collection is also amazing and the story of how it came back to the house is fascinating. The woodwork and elegance throughout is beautiful. This is truly a Connecticut gem.
Went here for the annual Christmas tree tour and it was cool. The Christmas display wasn’t as big as I had anticipated, but still a good excuse to visit a place with great history. Amazing and intricate woodwork and architecture has been and continues to be restored. Can’t wait for the basement to be done!
Mansion is gorgeous, but blinds/shades seem to always be drawn, probably to protect interior from UV damage. Grounds are okay - not much to see and a lot of road traffic noise, but certainly not a bad place to go for a stroll.
Very good service
Beautiful place..... The workmanship is incredible. Worth taking the tour
A wonderful place to visit. The history about this mansion is amazing. Lots of things to learn about. I won this mansions essay competition in Grade 3 before I moved out of the country. Love visiting this place on vacation.
A wonderful place to visit! Mathews Mansion is a beautiful Victorian mansion with many interesting stories and lots of history. A great place to visit! Tour guides are full of knowledge and there is a beautiful gift shop there. Watch for special events too!
We were there the day before at 3pm. We were told they only offered the 45 min and not the 90 min tour. They informed us to come back tomorrow at 12pm for the 90 min tour. We show up today at 12 and they informed us they are closed for the weekend for an event. If they told us earlier that they were closed we were have done the 45 min tour. I am upset and furious to find out we are not able to do the tour. Today is our last day here in Norwalk and we did not get to enjoy the mansion. Thanks for nothing.
Gorgeous! Great tour. Fascinating history. You must go. You will thoroughly enjoy your visit.
Great experience. Loved the history and the architecture of the mansion. Rivals the mansions of Newport.
Amazing craftmanship throughout this historic house. Enjoyed hearing fascinating stories about the Lockwood and Mathews families.
Nice will visit soon
Excellent guided tour... part museum, part history and architecture lesson
We went for the Ghost tour. It was entertaining.
Awesome piece of history. Totally recommend the guided tour. Could easily have added another hour with the knowledge that or good had. Enthusiastic, and knowledgeable!
Kind of rude front desk. Guided tour, cannot tour on your own. Feels a bit money pinching. Windows boarded up no light allowed in on nice day felt a bit closed off to be in a park. Interesting tour however.
Worth taking the tour. Just off exit 14 I95 .interesting house from the 1860s. If you are a history buff you will enjoy the tour. Not for toddlers or young children. Tour guides are very knowledgeable!
Wonderful, informative tour. 90 minutes for our group.
Fascinating glimpse of a Victorian US mansion
Love this place. The restored and the unrestored are a true look at how the wealthy lived.
Upstairs is closed for winter. I was most excited about seeing the upstairs bc I read it wasnt modified. They claimed it wasnt safe in winter but offered no explanation as to how its different for the other seasons. Without an explanation, it seemed a fake answer to me and I saw an employee who went upstairs. They did not mention no upstairs_ when I spoke with them on phone. You will miss a lot if you go.
INTERESTING MANSION . NEEDS MORE RESTORATIVE WORK. WHAT WAS RESTORED LOOKS GREAT . WHAT Needs done is the moldings and walls stripped down to bare plaster and wood . So it can show details with distinction
Nice park to visit with kids
Love to walk, while my grandkids ride and play
The mansion is beautifully restored and tells a story about how the owners of mansion lived as well as their servants.
It was late and off season, but Melissa was able to show us anyways. Visited from Texas, was not disappointed! Thanks for the wonderful mini tour Melissa!
It was so beautiful inside this mansion. When I went there was a special event so they were only showing the first floor, so its my mission to go back soon to see the rest of this gorgeous building. Probably not great for the kids, but teenagers and up can appreciate this kind of thing.
The inside of this place is freaking amazing! The tour guides explain everything so well! The history behind this mansion quite interesting! Definitely recommend to anyone!
My wife and I were married here on New Years Eve. We highly recommend this as an event venue. In addition to being a gorgeous space, the staff were incredibly flexible and accommodating.
Great vacation in Connecticut.
Amazing place to see. Great staff
This is a fascinating landmark of American history. This American industrialists mansion is breathtaking. You simply have to go and see it for yourself.
Our guide, Midge, was fabulous. Tour surpassed our expectations. We’ll be back!
Very pretty area
Mansion: 2 stars. The mansion is okay. Its very stuffy and tight to navigate through.Parking Lot: Infinite Stars. If want to go on a run around Norwalk/SoNo you should park here. Its less than a 5 minute run to SoNo and its free to park!
Amazing
Wonderful history and so happy it was saved from demolition.
A wonderful Halloween Tour.
Really educational
Its beautiful
Love this place
Great
Very interesting landmark ...
Beautiful
Nice park
Read reviews online before deciding that this would be one of the stops while visiting family in CT. Drove up from Pittsburgh Halloween weekend and was disappointed to hear it wasnt haunted right when we arrived (although reviews online said it was). The haunted tour they took us on while alright was alright, but for out of town travelers we didnt learn really anything about the historical building at all which was a little disappointing. It ended up just being ghost stories. Not what my group expected but still okay.
Amazing place.
Nice place to visit
Historic and memorable
Said they were open. But wasnt. ...
Nice house and good tour
