Amazing! We went for a themed event Tea called Hocus Pocus. We were running a few minutes late due to the rain and traffic, but they called us to make sure we were still coming before they started. Foods that were served was the classic finger sandwiches like chicken salad, egg salad and cucumber sandwiches. Sweets were crumpets with fresh marmalade, cookies and lady fingers. Fresh brewed tea with sugar cubes shaped like bats and frogs. The house was dressed in mourning garb from the Victorian Era and went well with the Hocus Pocus Witch theme. To our delight the Sanderson sisters arrived to cast spells and we were part of the fun. At the end of the tea, Winnie regaled us with I put a spell on you. We were then free to wander the upstairs part of the house. It was absolutely amazing. All the furnishings and accents were of the Victorian Era. Will definitely take a tour with a guide some time soon. This was an afternoon well spent sipping tea with my daughter and creating memories.
We visited for a special event and received an excellent guided tour (a candlelight tour of their current Victorian Mourning Exhibit). The guides / docents are all extremely well informed, and there is so much to see that Id definitely recommend going more than once.Social distancing is of course a bit of a challenge in small rooms, but every other precaution was taken - sanitizer, masks, small groups.
Love this house! So beautiful and well-preserved. Take a tour!
This home was a beautifully kept sight to see . Although you are politely asked not to touch or sit on furniture, the warmth, and history of this home is incredible !I really admire this home and highly recommend seeing this phenomenal museum, just make sure you can walk up the stairs ! Go see the Hunter house, youll be amazed also !
We got a tour from a very kind and informative young woman named Katherine. It was just the two of us so we got her all to ourselves and we were not disappointed with the amount of knowledge shared about the time period. Everything was really different at that time and they do a wonderful job at telling that story.
This place was amazing. I enjoyed the wedding that I attended there. The staff was very informative and extremely pleasant. They were very knowledgeable about the house and the history. I plan to go back just to have tea and krumpets. I highly recommend anyone to go
What a nice part of town. So quaint. Love the hunters house. Visit was very pleasant and educative in the same time. Our guide was both knowledgeable and fun to be around .Update : a huge tree failed on the house last week during a storm. Hope they can get all the help to reopen. Beleive they have a gofund me page
I went there as part of a holiday tour, to not only see what the holidays would have been like back in the Victorian times, but also tried some of the food that would have been served then. The house was beautiful, though Im still amazed at how anyone wouldve gotten any furniture up the stairs. Speaking of which, when you go there, youll be told amazing facts about the furniture, including the dishes. Youll also be able to see how the house was modernized even then. I also recommend asking the volunteers to tell you about why you should never say youre the lady of the house out loud.
I recently was part of a film shoot here, and lemme tell you, it is beautiful. There is so many things to see and feel just by stepping inside. You can feel the life that once was this house. The tour is amazing, and is worth so much more than $5. I highly recommend this place if you love history.
I went to An Evening with Poe event. Where in each room of the house a story or poem was acted out. The house is gorgeous, I loved the different rooms and history facts. The decor had me thinking how I could decorate my own home.
Although relatively small, this home is quite packed with little treasures that reflect the customs and traditions of the Victorian era. The docents did a great job with presenting each room and talking about the generations of the Hunter Family who once occupied it. The homes location isnt too far away from the restaurants and sites of Norfolk; so stopping by for a tour isnt too much of a hassle.
The house is absolutely beautiful! The layout of the home is impressive. Its a lot bigger than it looks. The tour is an hour plus long, filled with historic information about the family, home, and area. Its well worth the admission price. Admission price at the time I went was only 5 dollars. Its a great way to kill a couple of hours while waiting for dinner reservations or a movie.
Did a tour here and the staff wasnt very friendly. Seems like we werent wanted. Was going to recommend this place to others who are fans of Victorian era, but given my experience, I would have to pass.
This is a simple and engaging guided tour. Well worth the $5.00 charge. Really for adults and folks who appreciate fine architecture & the mores of the folks who followed the Victorian cultural model.
This incredible place has become my home away from home. The staff and docents, are incredible, and the diversity of those who have chosen to volunteer at the house makes the experience that much more rewarding. We all came to the house for different reasons, be it for education purposes or just personal interest. The doors are open to everyone. I was personally drawn to the house for a lecture a year ago, and I’m now part of a wonderfully unique family. I look forward to enjoying many more years at this wonderful, welcoming museum
We have been to many teas and events at this museum and they are always so well done. My daughter loves the tea and all the lovely food. The decor for the teas is always perfect for whatever the theme is as well. It really is the perfect place for a fun afternoon with my daughter. And the membership for the children’s programs is unbeatable and they are so creative with the monthly events for it. Can’t wait to come back again!!
Interesting personal tour of this historic home. Docent had good knowledge of aspects of the home and the time period it was built in. They keep the door locked even when the house is open, so ring the bell for someone to meet you. Tour took about 30 minutes, $5.
A wonderful place to do A night with Poe. Beautiful Victorian house and museum. Open Thursday to Sunday, April through December. Note. Steep stairs.
Wonderful place, with the friendliest, most patient staff I have ever had the pleasure of knowing!
Staff was friendly. Our tour guide, Michaela, was very knowledgeable and answered all the questions we had....she knew EVERYTHING about the house. This is not a great place for young children and I wouldnt be comfortable bringing a group of older children here either. This museum is set up in a house and does not have the spaciousness of many traditional museums. There are too many things for kids to accidentally (or mischievously) touch or bump into and my own three kids were making staff visibly anxious despite my keeping a close eye on them.I would definitely come back on my own or with my oldest or even with a group of teens. We had a wonderful visit.
A marvelous dip in a deep pool of lush Victoriana! Talented docents make this historic home come alive with the Hunter familys personalities and quirks. Plan to attend one of many special occasion teas with special themes. Hints: Call first to make sure the museum is open before you go. Also, if there is a special event youre thinking you might want to attend, dont wait to get your reservation. Many of their special events tend to fill up quickly.
Hunter House is gorgeous and timeless. We have been multiple times and we have a wonderful experience each time. The tea parties are the best!!!
This is a gorgeous place full of friendly and knowledgeable staff. We really enjoyed afternoon tea and a tour of the museum.
One of the most informative place that you can bring your kids over... The staff are also friendly and was able to entertain some questions, though the place is pricey still it is worth every penny.
WONDERFUL place. The ladies are warm and welcoming
Hidden gem in Norfolk. History buffs infatuated with the Victorian Era will be delighted.Ive been to many of their teas, which are always impressive.
Love the house and all the history. The prices for events are usually a bit steep, but they are always busy brewing up the next thing, and the general feel from much of the staff is of obvious racism.*(Check any group photo)Tread carefully.
Excellent tour. Very unusual Victorian house.
Beautiful museum with very knowledgeable staff!! Had a wonderful tea with goodies made by the people who work there. Fabulous little bit of history right in downtown Norfolk. Definitely want to go back and see it again!
I found the Victoria times very interested
What a wonderful experience I had at the Hunter House. This place is a little hard to find but once the road turns to cobblestone you know you are going in the right direction! The Hunter House is an amazingly curated example of a Victorian house with many orignal items from the Hunter family as a part of the beautiful interior design. I also enjoyed their great Egdar Allen Poe event. Admission is very affordable and the staff members and docents provide excellent service. I highly reccomend this museum to anyone interested in the Victorian era, interior design, or history in general.
Love the history and the volunteers amazing place to visit check them out on Facebook
Had a wonderful time giving readings to great visitors and staff.
The home is beautiful, well worth spending the time and learning the history of it.
Absolutely beautiful Architecture!
I had the pleasure of visiting Hunter House this week for a storytime in the garden with Our Place 24hr Childcare. The Governess shared stories of Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny. We throughly enjoyed the reading. She also shared information about the house and its events. We will definitely visit again!
Fantastic house and a great tour! Well worth it!
Definitely a wonderful place of discovery! Many activities offered for children as well as adults.
Loved my time here. My homeschooled guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the era and house. Im impressed.
So cool. The host was amazinglynice and accommodating.
Beautiful old house and the tour guide was very nice.
I did some masonry work on this place and the build of this house is amazing. Epic stone work.
We did the Halloween tour. We could tell the Seance was fake, but it was a nice change to put some history behind halloween.
Historical place, tasty tea and food.
Edgar Allen Poe Lecture

Love this home you have to see yourself
