Very cool mansion formerly owned by a coal magnate. They are one of the two Newport Mansions that are open to yours during covid. There’s an app you can download that will give you a very in depth history of the mansion, or a pamphlet that is a little more surface level but you can move a lot quicker. Or you can choose to just take in the beauty of the place! It’s crazy that people lived like this, and really gives a good insight into the inequality of life in the Gilded Age, especially if you take the Servant Life tour. After you work your way through the mansion, you can hang out in the enormous courtyard and explore the trees, fountains, and statues. Well worth the cost of admission, which I believe was $18/person.

A grand old house but due to COVID19 some of the rooms are roped off and you can’t go into them. Would be great if the stables were a bit more open to the public as you can only see them from the outside. Inside The Elms be sure to admire the industrial scale kitchens, just be warned it’s dark in there so taking good photos is hard. Ample open air parking available but heads up the exit is very narrow so truck drivers take it slow. Worth seeing for sure and make sure not to miss the sunken gardens.

Possibly my favorite mansion in Newport, extensive grounds are breathtaking. Super exciting visit. It was interesting to see how the ultra elite lived during the gilded age. The tour comes includes access to the property and an audio tour. They provide a smartphone with headphones. I recommend bringing your own headphones for additional comfort. The headphones they provide dont work well with kids. This property is spectacular and the Japanese tea garden is cool too. Four stars because it was busy on the day I visited and some of the areas in the house were off limits. I recommend getting the annual pass so you can visit other Newport Preservation societys properties. I visited on 23 November 2019. The mansion was dressed up for Christmas and it was an amazing experience!

Visited summer 2020Pretty cool mansion. This place is basically an huge, old mansion that has been kept in perfect condition and turned into kind of a museum. The staff is friendly and helpful (and stays out of the way unless theyre needed). They do have a small gift shop. The great thing about this is that they allow visitors to use their own phones/headphones to listen in. The app is well made (but of course wants access to your pictures...). The entire visit was smooth and pleasant. Would go again.

I did the servant Life tour with my girlfriend on Saturday highly recommend it for those who are interested in knowing a little bit more about how the day to day mansion operations took place during the Gilded age. My favorite part was learning about how the omelet was invented. This tour does have a lot of stair climbing but elevators are available if needed. We had a great tour guide and totally worth it.

One of the lesser known Newport Mansions without the attachment to a well known name I my opinion this is the best one to visit. The mansion is magnificent with such a diversity of great art, decor and a wonderful audio tour with many side stories. We regret not doing the additional servants experience and when we come back will have to do that. If you like history, architecture, and high society come check it out.

Unlike the Breakers mansion, one can finish visiting the Elms in 45 minutes to an hour without missing much. Although most of the original artifacts and items belonging to the estate were sold in the auction, the pieces replaced have been chosen with care matching the time and era and the ambience of the mansion perfectly.

We loved this house! The property is stunning and the Servants Life tour was really wonderful! I highly recommend it. It is the only tour we have been on so far that actually shows you the servants quarters, which was awesome to see. Plus, if you go during nice weather they take you to the roof for a beautiful view of the area. It focuses completely on the people who ran the house, so if you want to see the rest of the house you should also do the standard audio tour.

If you only have time for 2 or even 1 mansion in Newport, I would highly recommend Elms. Great history, no timed tours, audio guide is just chock full of great stories and they have the prettiest room out of all the mansions -- the garden room on the first floor. And there are incredible gardens and plenty of grass for kids (or adults) to run around and let off steam ;)

This is an incredible Estate located in Newport, Rhode Island property of Berwind Edward J., Coal Mining Company, built in the end of the 19th Century inspired in the French Architecture as well as the landscapes, full of green and colors during spring and summer and the foliage as beautiful and cool, this was summer´s home and it had an organized old fashioned distribution including the cloth´s laundry elevator, and the enormous kitchen, the dining rooms, the Ballroom, the sober stairs, and the bedrooms so numerous and large, because although the family had no children but there were a lot of people invited to join their friends and family. Now its a beautiful museum and National Historical Building.

LOVE LOVE LOVE The Elms!!!!As you walk through the beautiful landscaping and climb the stone stairs to the ornate front door opening to the majestic foyer, you are ushered back...back to a time when beauty, elegance, culture and sophistication were valued and desired. As you meander the hallways of this historic house you can immerse yourself into the everyday lives of the homes inhabitants. The audio tour guides you through the splendor of the parlor, library, dining room and the magical sun room, up the opulent grand staircase to the guests rooms and through the private suite of rooms for the mister and misses. All the while the audio tour gives you a behind the scenes look into the stories and lives of the servants. You are invited to take the servants staircase down (which is also quite amazing) into the kitchens and work areas. This is truly a fantastic experience! The home is somewhat handicap accessible. They do have an elevator and the friendly staff is quite helpful and accommodating. There is also a very nice gift shop. They sell novelty items, art work, jewelry, books and much much more.

Very interesting history and architect. Rather interesting that exterior has a number of sculpture that are interesting to. This estate is part of a number of estate that belong to a preservation society. We found that the pricing is very confusing with all types of up sales and information that seemed to be different from one place to another, and the workers did not seem to want to try and help customer to understand. Over l we found the workers to be at best indifferent and at worse rude. The lady guiding our tour was the nicest person we encountered and is the main reason for 3 stars. The majority of staff made you feel that some how we were lucky to have them show up to help. Bottom line if you enjoy beautiful architect and a view of how the uber rich lived then this is a good tour just dont expect a lot of help from staff.

The Elms also has a massive garden so its a great walk in the evening.Audio tour is available so dont forget to pick your mobile device. Most of the restaurants are near this area so if you want to have lunch and then check the place out it would be ideal.
