We liked this because it was different than the regular mansions of Newport. There are two options, paying for just the grounds, $5 and $20 for the grounds and house.The house was interesting because it was lived in and modified as such. It has a nice look at Doris Dukes life and what she did to help preserve history in Newport.The grounds are spectacular and worthy of a second trip. We had a small picnic and just enjoyed the view. If I had guests in and need a fun simple activity I would do the grounds and enjoy the view.

Great afternoon girls day with a couple of friends. Spent an hour touring the mansion and 30 minutes on the grounds. The staff is great at answering questions. Visit on a nice day to enjoy the gardens and amazing ocean views.

The Mansion had many great rooms and views of the water. It has knowledgeable staff who could answer any of your question of the place. Staff and visitors are required to wear cloth face masks in order to keep everyone safe.I would recommend requesting a tour in advance to see the Newport Restoration Foundation’s great mansion. If not, try hiking down on the southern portion of Cliff Walk to get a view of the backside.If the Newport Restoration Foundation is reading this, the only thing I would improve is the landscaping of the rear of the mansion; it just seems bare and in need of some trees. However, if this is what Olmsted wanted, you should definitely keep it as close to his vision as possible.

All was excellent except for one woman who took our information. Didnt get her name but she was extremely rude. Other than that, all of the other staff were extremely happy, and knowledgeable about the grounds history.

Beautiful. The Mansion is just as grand as the other Newport cottages but more home like. You can actually imagine living there. Checkout the gardens; small but beautifully maintained. My favorite was the kitchen garden.

Gorgeous house with very insightful staff. There a nice party through the house to take that is well laid out. I only wish there was an audio tour to download since guided tours are not available right now.

Just a terrific museum, with knowledgeable and entertaining docents. Especially loved the kitchen garden and Miss Dukes bedroom.Went with a large group and they split us into 2 manageable sized groups so everyone could hear and see everything. Highly recommend.

Terrific two-hour or so destination. A slightly more modern Newport mansion, which means it feels like a place a modern person could enjoy (of course only if they had the millions to maintain it). For those who dont know about Doris Duke, its important to know that she is the poor little rich girl who used her familys tobacco millions to save both colonial and gilded age Newport architecture. Fascinating background on her life, including clothes, photographs, artwork, and more. The grounds and setting are as good as it gets in Newport.

This is THE mansion to see in Newport. You can do a guided or unguided tour. We had decided to go with the unguided tour, but was still able to take advantage of the staffs extensive knowledge on the mansion. All staff members are friendly and more than willing to share additional background knowledge.Also make sure you go visit the grounds, the view is magnificient!

Beautiful place to visit, wish more of the house was open. Peaceful grounds to explore.

Neat mansion. Not as crowded as others. The staff was excellent. It was a cool day outside yet it was freezing in the mansion! My toes were frozen by the time I left. You could even tell the staff was cold. Be prepared and bring a sweater.Doris Duke has a lot of neat artifacts that she collected. I would even have enjoyed more plaques because there was just so many interesting things.

Amazing.!!! Doris Duke was one interesting and amazing woman! Her home a mix of past and present . You can see how she loved her home at Rough Point. Possibly my favorite or the Newport Mansion. Such a human feel here! I will always come back to visit!

Very cool mansion museum to visit with some interesting history. Another Vanderbilt mansion last owned by Doris Duke who had helped to facilitate the preservation of many of the historic homes in Newport. Great views from the home and beautiful gardens. About a half mile walk to get to the closest Cliff Walk access point. Glad that we choose to explore this area of Newport on our most recent trip.

The grounds are very well maintained as is the mansion itself. Low cost of admission. The staff are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Would definitely take the family again. Worth a second visit.

The history and story of Doris Duke is awesome. If you go, you must do the tour.

Doris Duke did not keep a diary, so much of her life is recorded through her pictures travels and philanthropy. The mansion attempts to show the woman behind the wealth. It is very well done. Tonight we attended a panel wherein former employees shared their memories of her.

What a glorious home! We visited today and we were so lucky to have had Jenn show us through the home. It was such luck to have her explain the history of the home to us. I have visited Newport mansions before, but this was my first visit to this Home. A fabulous experience and the best views of all the mansions for sure. We considered it the best home we have toured in Newport. You can feel upon entry that this was indeed someone’s real home and was very special. I would recommend this to all visiting this area. A great gem!

Love walking around the area

I love Newport, its one of my favorite places to visit. This place is OK to visit. Didnt love it but it was good to visit. If you are familiar with Newports history you understand how important Dorris Duke is to the shoreline town. Out of interest and respect to her I wanted to check out rough point. It was definitely worth a look. The view from the back lawn is nice for sure. If you dont mind the walk though you can get the view from the cliff walk. Though check it out and make your own determination.

Really cool example of gilded era homes in the area. The art and other collections are impressive but probably the best thing is the home is just as it was left by Doris Duke in 1993 when she passed away, down to the wood logs placed in the fireplace but were never used. The tour guide (forget his name) was really good, super knowledgeable and very good presentation. Would defiantly recommend this and the self guided tour of the Marble House right down the street as two very good examples of that age.

Probably my favorite house in Newport to visit. Tours are very detailed and special. You do not get to see as much of the home as I would have thought however, the story and history of the home is very unique. Great artwork throughout the home. Definately worth visiting.

Today I visited rough point manor home in Rhode Island with my two children. Because we are military we got in free due to the blue star family program. 3 minutes into the tour the tour guide told us the other 14 or so people in tour had paid more money than we had and I couldnt keep my 2 year old silent so we needed to leave (he was not loud or screaming). I have never been more humiliated in front of a group of people. To have our free entry due to our military service thrown in our face so snottily was extremely humiliating. It was truly the ugliest display of elitism I have ever experienced.This museum is NOT military or kid friendly. They should be removed from the blue star program. They do not deserve the honor.

Very cool house. We thought this was more livable than so.e of the super fancy ones. Loved the outside portion. We saw the winter tour and are looking forward to going back in my the summer.

Not on the mansion pass but we ended up with an hour and a half personal tour on a Saturday, what are the odds!? Guide was very knowledgeable, personable, and very much wanted to share with you. Great experience.

Doris Dukes home is worth seeing for the main reason that the house is left with all her furnishings. She had eclectic taste with items from around the world. It is a fun tour too. I loved it!

This was a nice visit

The tour guides are very knowledgeable and personable at the same time.

Compared to The Breakers, this place was pretty dull. In the English Manor style, the structure itself was a lot of white walls and dark wood without a great deal of architectural interest. The focus of the tour was on the tapestries, Chinese vases, and Louis-the-whatever furniture. Doris Duke, who once owned the property, sounds like an amazing woman, but the home itself left me cold.

Do NOT visit this mansion off season. We paid $15 for a tour in the mansion. Only four rooms were open and ALL the furniture was covered with sheets. We were told to imagine what it would have looked like. Docent read from notes. The four of us were very disappointed and felt ripped off.

The narration of the tour here was excellent the day we visited. The experience is somewhat different than other Newport Mansions because the last inhabitant, Doris Duke, was closer to being a contemporary person and her singular character is tangibly woven into the place. Also, I was impressed by some of the late 20th century Newport History we learned about, specifically the role that Doris Dukes foundation, NRF, played in investing in the citys historical structures. Admittedly, the portrayal of Doriss personal life avoids some of the sadder incidents.

Really enjoyed Rough Point! Our guide was phenomenal!
