A very good museum well worth a visit. The Ballantine house is a nicely restored Victorian era home attached to the museum. A nice assortment of Asian, African, European and American art. There is a parking lot right next to the museum. A cafe is being installed. There is a planetarium also within the building. Great place to spend a day.

This is a great museum. I especially liked the Seeing America exhibit. The Native Artists and Ancient Mediterranean exhibits were also interesting. I also enjoyed the Arts of Global Africa collection. Finally, the Ballantine house and the exhibits on display there, especially the Sterling silver exhibit were great, as well.

I went here on October 2019, and I really liked it. It was not crowded but it was kind of cold in there. The workers are welcoming and the third floor was so far the most interesting and fascinating.

They pack a LOT into a small, oddly shaped space, without feeling cramped at all! Organized by culture, you can snake your way through the worlds art, see the featured exhibit on 2, then hop back up to play in the small but very well made nature center. The Ballantine House is part of the museum and actually attached. You enter from inside, on the first floor. Much like other historic houses of its day, but cool to see it absorbed by a museum! The shop is nice (no pins or patches), parking is $10, and no cafe (yet, being built now).Grounds includes an outside loop with somber sculptures and a historic schoolhouse for parents that started the board of education in Newark. Also, a Fire Museum (that was unfortunately closed when I tried to go).

I came here for an art final. It was nice and quiet. You got to see a wide range of artwork from various artists. Some you havent even heard of. Its small, but you get to so entranced by the art that it seems like youve been there for a while. If you love art, this is a great place to go. Especially if youre a Kean student and you need to go to an art museum for a project or final.

My wife & I visit museums all over the world & I was surprised to find such a gem nestled in Newark, NJ!Knowledgeable, friendly, & helpful staff. It has an insightful collections of paintings, sculptures & cultural artifacts spanning mostly American, Native American, Asian, African, Egyptian, Greek, & Roman art. And its free to Newark residents!Theres a space w/ activities & thoughtfully designed games 4 families & children. Theres a Planetarium, outdoor sculpture garden, & even interesting facts about the history of Newark itself.Remodeled, its architecturally interesting, a great space to host an event, & much larger than you first might imagine; thought not too dauntingly to tackle in one full day. I love museums, so I opted to visit multiple days to learn & enjoy everything @ a more leisurely pace.Originally a geek from Jersey City, Im slightly embarrassed that I never even knew the Newark Museum of Art was there!Definitely deserving to sit atop any things to do in Newark list. Id highly recommend a visit to everyone & encourage locals to get a membership!

How did I not know how great this place is? It is huge and filled with all kinds of interesting exhibits from different cultures and time periods. There is even a restored house inside it. We probably only saw 2/3 of it. We will have to come back. The staff is friendly. They have a AAA discount. The museum shop is nice. Also there is a small sculpture garden and old schoolhouse in back.

Imagine the quality of the Smithsonian but without crowds, plus the benefit of a super-friendly staff. My family went to visit the Museum this past Sunday and were blown away by the diversity of the art on display as well as Ballantine House but the staff was just as amazing. We were all made to feel welcome, that they appreciated us just for coming but really we were so glad that we took the time to visit. What a gem! Again, the staff just made the whole thing that much better. They were enthused about art as much as we were and it showed. Thanks for a great day!

Super cool.I’ve been to this museum 3 times in the last month. I’m not impressed with the remodel it still looks a bit run down. Desk woman is not friendly. However the layout, the pieces in the museum, and the museum itself are gems. I’ve brought a couple of friends to the museum and they were very impressed by the exhibits. The staff that work within the museum are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I am also happy that residents and students get in free.

Unusually eclectic museum with world class collection. Make sure you get a map or you can easily miss some of it. The remodeling was well done with an eye for little details that show off the architecture. Make sure you check out the temporary exhibits since they are expertly assembled. I just saw Beyond Zen, about Buddhism in Japan. It was fantastic. The whole museum is well curated in spite of the collection being so diverse. Themaker space provides hands on activities for children. Theres a fine collection of Asian art, American art, African art, small collections of Roman and ancient Egyptian, a planetarium, fire fighting history, Earth science, a Victorian mansion, and an outdoor sculpture garden.Give yourself lots of time. I have found the docents very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, do get on a tour if you can.

Located in the downtown district of Newark this Museum offers beautiful sculptures and paintings from different places, and cultures. A personal favorite of mine is the Ballatine House, a national landmark that transports you back into the history and glory of Newark.Nice size, you can complete the tour of the facility with a business day. Daily activities for families and children also featuring a planetarium show with the purchase of additional tickets. Two gift shops and cafe are sure to please!Great place to visit if you love art, culture and new interpretations.

We visited here on a Saturday in July, and we happened to arrive right when it opened. The front desk and surrounding area is bright, open, and clean. We were greeted cordially by the staff. We spent two hours here, but because we had something else on our schedule that day we had to leave sooner than we would have liked. We could have spent at least another hour here. There were entire areas that we didn’t even see. If you really want to admire and take in all the museum has to offer, I recommend that you set aside 3-4 hours for your visit.

Our Upward Bound students received a guided tour. We discussed the composition and elements in a painting that contributed to its mood and meaning. The tours art theme was lighting. The tour ended in a quick sketch activity that encouraged our students to draw and learn about highlights regardless of their artistic ability. There was a spacious area for our group to eat lunch. The planetarium was fantastic. Our show was about Egyptian constellations and telling time with the Stars. Make sure you seat opposite of the entrance door on the back row or you might have to bend your neck uncomfortably to view the show. I think the museum is amazing on what it has to provide. I am hoping to return on my own time to explore more.

The Newark Museum is a hidden jewel among metro tri-state museums. The museum has great non European collections, especially African and Asian, and theyre in the midst of a 20th century re-install.Theyve also a planetarium and an exhibit outlining the history of ecology in New Jersey. Then theres the mansion. If you want to experience fin-de-siecle opulence, come visit. Theyve preserved it as a monument to early 20th Century wealth. The staff curators and docents are really friendly. You can get around in a wheelchair but it will take a little effort. Its a great visit Indeed.

The Newark Museum has a great summer day camp for school-aged children. Each session runs weekly with the option to sign up for multiple weeks. My two little ones attended a couple years ago and they had a great time. They still have some of the artifacts that they created. The only draw back for working parents is there is no before or after care.I also recently attended the 43rd Annual Newark Film Festival in the museum garden with my kids. For this event, Queen of Katwe was the featured movie and the Newark Chess Club was the partnering organization. The atmosphere was relaxing and the event was well organized. Overall, my two kids enjoyed the free popcorn and playing chess against other children and adults.
