Beautifully decorated theater. Seats are comfy and the acoustics are flawless. The staff does a great job getting you to your seat as well as keeping you informed during intermission exactly how much time you have left before the show starts again.Saw The Inheritance (both parts over two nights). Believe the hype.. its an absolutely mind-blowing experience. Everything about it (the brilliant structure, the beautiful writing, the spare but effective set, the haunting lighting and the incredible acting) was spectacular.
Small but elegant theater that’s so New York: small seats, restrooms downstairs and dim lighting. Really wish they’d refurbish these places to make them more accessible for people with disabilities. The show was wonderful however: The Bands Visit with first rate actors and musicians. We loved the story of an Egyptian band visiting a small town in Israel. Universal themes.
I saw The Bands Visit and The Inheritance here. It’s a small, lovely theater. Both times I sat in the orchestra. By most theater’s standards these are great seats. They are comfortable with loads of leg room.
It is a great Theater. Comfortable, with great acoustic. The play was amazing. Acting, directing.and the simplicity of the scenary. An intelligent well written play.
Amazing venue. I had the opportunity to see Macbeth played by Alan Cumming in this theater. Unforgettable experience.
The performance space is very good. Seats are comfortable. Acoustics and sightlines are good. However, the street-level lobby is very small, and the downstairs lobby was overcrowded. During The Inheritance the mens room was too small to accommodate the intermission crowds.
I am woefully inept to rate a theatre yet Google has given me this important task. What can I say about this theatre... well its definitely in my top 10. Comfortable seats (but not TOO comfortable). Thats a thing, right?
The theatre is beautiful! The staff are friendly. We had a great experience here. The Inheritance is amazing.
Good show. Friendly ushers, Good to see that the theater is still in good shape despite its age
Great place for broadway theater. Graded floor makes for good viewing even at the last row. Comfortable seats.
I feel bad leaving this review on the theater page as the theater itself was perfectly decent. The show, however, was not.The inheritance was unequivocally the worst thing Ive ever had the displeasure of viewing. If you can do anything else with your time, literally anything, do that. Id rather spend an evening in times square than sit through another minute of it.
Not only was The Inheritance an amazing story, but the kindness of Corrine above and beyond ushering was far beyond anything Ive experienced at any theatre. She is a treasure.
Its an average Broadway theater. Sight lines and acoustics are good. Seats are old and uncomfortable. Bathroom lines are impossible.
We saw two shows on the same day. The mattenee, we sat in the 4th row side, and the evening show, the very back row. I simply grabbed a bolster seat and had an unobstructed view of the whole stage.
The epitome of an Old New York theatre. Marvelous. Perfect size.
The Inheritance was the Best Show on Broadway, but will be closed on 15th of March 2020, earlier than scheduled! What a pity! Shameful even!
Lovely theater. Helpful staff. Seats too tight. But loved the okay do willing to be uncomfortable.
Saw the Band’s Visit in December 2018. Most of the seats on the bottom floor have a pretty good view of the stage, can’t speak about the balcony. Music was great and I’ve been listening to the soundtrack after the show! The songs are unique and catchy. The plot is actually a series of mostly unrelated sub plots, each has a sweet message. The show is 90 minutes without intermission.
Show was very good. The Inheritance. Seating is very tight and not enough leg room for a 6 foot person.
Wow what a cool theatre. Very intimate, every seat is a good seat. The staff was very helpful, the restrooms and bar service was quick and clean. They were very strict with the cameras so dont try to sneak any pics! You can feel and sense the history too - so many stars have performed here. See something here:
A beautiful grand theater. Good view from the balcony.
The theater it self is amazing but the show that I saw the last time was far from a good show. I hope the next show in this theater is better.
Whatever show you are heading to, you will love your experience at the Barrymore. There is not a poor seat in the theatre. We have sat in the orchestra as well as highest balcony, and it is always wonderful. Lovely theatre. Enjoy!
Beautiful theatre! You have to be able to do stairs for the bathroom, but not for orchestra!
Beautiful theater. Great acoustics. Comfortable seats. The play, The Inheritance moved and enchanted us.
The historic Barrymore theatre is a beautiful example of old Broadway. Lovely decor surrounding a large proscenium arch stage. The ceilings are particularly lovely with beautiful carvings all around, however the seats are about as old as the theatre, which means they are small and narrow. This makes them uncomfortable for anyone who might be larger than your average early 20th century human. So dress lightly and enjoy the scenery as well as whatever amazing Broadway show you are seeing there!
Saw Curious Incident here. Great show. Theater itself is pretty, but legroom is pretty cramped for taller guys and my knees started to hurt by the end of the show. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Went to see The Bands Visit. Was seated in the orchestra. Seats were comfortable with reasonable leg room (for someone who is 55). Bathrooms are down in the basement, with one handicapped facility on the main floor. Theater was nice, and had a great view of the stage.
Standard good quality Broadway theater... Very small lobby area
A grand dame of the theatre district. Look up & apppreciate the ceiling & chandelier.
The Band’s Visit was spectacular and the spaces for production and performance are well accommodated by the venue. As others have noted, the seating is a bit cramped. The width of the seat wasn’t so much the issue (my generously wide backside didn’t feel squeezed ) as it was the lack of space between seats. I’m thankful I was on the end of a row because the leg space just isn’t there either; one of my knees was constantly pushed up against the seat in front of me. That all says, my orchestra seats had a fabulous view and the seating was tolerable for a shorter show.
A beautiful theater that didnt feel huge. Restrooms and bar are in the basement. We got seats in the nosebleeds and I basically got a nosebleed from the searing heat up in the top corner of the theater. Prepare to sweat up there! The show was great though. Acoustics are pretty good.
Beautiful theatre in the heart of Broadway, with an amazing chandelier decendiing from the ceiling. View is excellent from any seat, the ushers very helpful!
I recently saw The Bands Visit here, and it was just an awesome experience. Big stage right there, with lots of space for many changing scenes happening as you watch the show. Looks cool to me. The seats are as usual small and tight. The whole place is small, actually, but it looks grand inside.
Great rush ticket view. Show was visible even when sitting on extreme left
Came here for a The Inheritance and sat in the front row (AA). I wouldn’t recommend it because of the lip of the stage being elevated for this production, but otherwise it’s a perfectly fine theater.
Perfect sized theater. Every seat is a good seat. Current show is fab.
Beautiful old theater. Leg room not great like all old theaters.
Saw the bands visit here. Was ok. Theater is a bit cramped with not comfy seats. Leg space is tight if you are tall.
Good Broadway theatre with excellent and good views of the stage
Great staff good seat
A fine theatre in which to see a great play i.e. The Inheritance
It was a wonderful theatre to see The Bands Visit.
The box office staff is lovely. They will work with you to choose the best seats for the price you want. Also if you missed the show for any number of reasons, they try to be accommodating so youre still able to get your moneys worth.
Saw the Tony awards winning The Bands Visit. Front balcony seats were perfect. A smaller, more intimate theater. Very enjoyable.
Nice setting. Older theatre, reasonably sized. Only two levels of seats that I could tell, so only one set of stairs. Not very accommodating for disabled persons as there isnt an elevator. But still very nice. Play sucked though (the Bands Visit) but nice theatre
The Bands Visit is an awesome play!! Beautiful story, acted beautifully and the music is gorgeous! Highly recommend it. The play is 20 stars. If youre tall, the seats are torturous, but so is practically every Broadway house. The Bands Visit is worth a touch of torture.
Unique show. A bit slow, but meaningful. Some very good songs. Small theatre. Historic Barrymore built in 1928. Seats small. No arm room. (People are bigger now.)
Beautiful theater. Wonderful and helpful staff.
Seating is tight. Performance was excellent.
Definitely one of the better theatres for taller people. Im 65 and usually hate sitting in Broadway seats. Ive seen two shows here now and recommend it 100%, you can find parking at least a block away and its close to trains. I would recommend going downstairs before the show to use the restroom and get a drink so you can avoid it at intermission if it can be helped
Loved this theatre. Saw The Bands Visit. Highly recommend it. Also... Sat in last row of Mezzanine row G, seats 10-12. Great lines of sight and good sound. Fun and saved money with these seats.
First row center mezzanine for The Bands Visit. very comfortable seats and fully stocked bar with pleasant bartenders. show was not my choice but who knew Monk had such a charming singing voice?? enjoyed the show a lot, would definitely go back. musicians on stage is a powerful and effective choice for this show.
Nice theater, saw Alton Browns eat your science show, great place!
Nice view of the screen and comfort chairs
Saw The Bands Visit on its next to last night. Loved it. Nice little theater. The bathroom is in the basement.
Just saw A Bands Visti there this past weekend. I have never been to the Barrymore before this. What a great theatre. It may not be as big as most on Broadway but I prefer it that way! Great architecture inside. If you have the chance definitely see a show there.
The theater is nice and cozy -- thats another word for small. Pretty much all seats will give you a great view because of the way the seats are organized. However, the seats are TINY in the upstairs section.I am a short and skinny person and these seats are a tight fit even for me. Try your best to bring nothing with you to give yourself more room. If its winter and you have a jacket, God speed and good luck.
Went to see Bands Visit on a 30 degree night. We had a great view from the center lower mezzanine. However, the theatre was too warm and it was hard to focus on the show b/c I was feeling so lightheaded. Luckily, I had a half bottle of water and the playbill to fan myself. I noticed others around me taking water out. Also, since theres no intermission and our seats were in the middle of the row I couldnt get fresh air and was just waiting for it to be over. Seats in lower mezz have very little legroom, but great view.
The seats are the worst seats I have sat in on Broadway, and not because of the play, or the view. They are not that comfortable, and the lowness produces a bad knee angle that had me and someone else in my party in pain for the latter half of the performance. Please update your seats. Everything else that I experienced there was good.
We saw the Bands Visit was very good.
Very well designed. Acoustics are good and it is possible to see the stage very well from every angle
Good place. Excellent play
Fairly good view from most places. Watch out for the very first row on the balconies, the wall doesnt really cover your view but it cuts off the very tip of the stage. Feels strange.
Fine show, not enough leg room for the taller people. The 2 workers I delt with were extremely rude and I will never be back. 100$ for a ticket, the least they could’ve done was smile.
I love this show. Very entertaining. However the seats are small at this theater and I was uncomfortable. The shows an hour and a 1/2 long straight through no intermission. If I was able to get up and move perhaps I would have been more comfortable?
Photographed the cast of The Inheritance with new president of the HRC BACK stage last week.
The Barrymore Theater is a small, old, somewhat uncomfortable theater. But no one goes to a theater to be wowed by the theater itself. People go to theaters with the hope they will be wowed by the show and actors onstage.Using those parameters, the Barrymore Theater and its current tenant, The Bands Visit is a magnificent venue that kept me memorized for the 90+ minutes that I was there last week.Hope your visit is the same.
The friendliest ushers in NYC!
Beautiful old style Broadway theater. The balcony is quite close to the stage and with great visibility. So far we have seen only good shows here. Maybe with a little exception of the Bands visit which was a bit of disappointment. Also we had rush tickets and the box office person DIDNT tell us the lead actors were not performing tonight. This was quite a cheap trick
Really beautiful venue. Saw the Bands Visit here. What an amazing show. The producers picked the perfect location, the musical is warm and intimate and so is the space. Would welcome the opportunity to return.
Went to see the bands visit. Well the facility is lovely I was less than thrilled with this particular show. The plot never seem to fully develop maybe because it went all kinds of awards I expected more but I was with two other people and all three of us were very disappointed.
A little cramped especially for bigger people, that made it uncomfortable for those people and for people (like my dad) who are claustrophobic. But the musical was good and they even sold wine which made the whole experience better but like I said...its cramped.
Just great the inheritance was superb..
Classic house. Beautifully maintained.
Very convenient location. Entrance was very wellqhite and easy. organized. They direct you to your place calmly, no rush. Show began on time.
The Bands Visit is amazing!
Sat in the mezzanine for The Bands Visit. That show is a little weird. The mezz is very comfortable, stadium seating. The stairs to get up there are a bit steep, and the bathroom is all the way in the basement. You will get your work out in.
Grand and comfy, though the steep parterres might bring on a bit of vertigo if you are so disposed. Good sight lines from every section. Friendly, entertaining ushers. Efficient intake and outflow.
The Inheritance Part 1 amazing!!
Saw The Bands Visit. The theatre was not that big that you can we got a good view from our seat.
Worked here for years. Go see the Inheritance playing now. 3 hour show
Loved the old theater style. A lot of steps to the bathroom....but very enjoyable place and great staff.
Historic venue and awesome show! Went to see The Bbands Visit. Well worth it but the seats were built for a bygone era.
The theater itself is quaint and beautiful. All seats have a decent view of the stage, though Id recommend trying to sit near the center for best viewing experience.Note that drinks (including alcohol) and snacks are available in the basement, though you will pay Broadway prices for them.
The theater is in a fairly shappy shape. Unless you have an orchestra seat, the climb up to the next level is difficult for many older patrons and the pitch of the seats is steep. I saw many people struggling
Absolutely NO leg room. Im on the short side and cant imagine how someone with long legs would manage. If you need a headset you need to walk all the way downstairs. They have no concern for those with disabilities. Why not move that small area (box) to the main level?
Classic venue. Have seen The bands visit. Interesting music not so great drama.
Beautiful old theater. Saw The Bands Visit which was disappointing.Amazing that they took 10 tony award including Best Musical. Very good cast but a weak story line.
Beautiful theatre, but oh boy is it tight up in the balcony.
