This is a favorite spot of mine in New Orleans. As a history buff, especially of the entire Southeastern US, one really cannot fully understand it without understanding New Orleans and Louisiana. In particular Ive been fascinated with the history of the region during the American Revolution and the War of 1812 and the museum has (or had, I last visited in 2003) many artifacts, paintings and maps from those eras (see my photos).

Great exhibits (!)Easily worth 90 minutes of your valuable time in New Orleans no matter how many days you might have in townEither re-visit or hear for your first time the massive human- and nature-made disaster of Hurricane Katrina ... 1st hand narratives, exhibits and multi media bring it all to life and scale of the disaster, response & rebuild ... we were told that post Katrina the area’s human population went from 400,000 to 120,000 and has not recovered ... sidenote = # of restaurants post-Katrina went from 600 to 1,600 (!)

The Cabildo is a beautiful historic building in Jackson Square. It houses several museum exhibits in a spacious setting. The exhibits are good. There is modern photography and Napoleon’s death mask. There is an exhibit on the woman who created and funded the Jackson Square area. Just outside the building musicians gather and perform, people dine at restaurants, and artists sell their works. It’s a nice place to visit, but also allows you to see and enjoy the color of the surrounding area.

The Cabildo is part of the Louisiana State Museum system, and one of 4 sites in New Orleans. We got a combo ticket (discount) to also visit the Presbytere and the 1850 House, because they are all three right there in Jackson Square and made for a nice afternoon of history. We might have spent about 3.5-4 hours total amongst the three locations, and together they tell a good historic overview of the area. The Cabildo focuses mainly on very basic NOLA history, the War of 1812, and the history of the Jackson Square buildings. Most memorably, on the top floor there is also an exhibit of New Orleans mapping which includes a fascinating 3D topographical digital map that follows the changing demographics and geographic history of the area. I feel like a finished the afternoon as a much smarter person!

This a good local museum. The building itself is legendary: among other milestones it was where the Louisiana Purchase was signed in 1803! The Cabildo runs a 2hr. History tour of the French Quarter. I went today and because it was drizzling and the tourism is down during this time, I had my very one private tour. Ginger toured me through the Streets near the waterfront, I learned a great deal about architecture, stories about how the city was saved from British rule, little detail about why there these markers on building. It made the city more personal.

*At the time we went there, there was a promo where you can get a discounted price if you buy tickets for The Cabildo and The Presbytere at the same time.I didnt see many people taking advantage of seeing this place, which is a shame. Art and history of New Orleans is remembered here. The grand staircase together with the old paintings while youre climbing up are worth the entrance fee.It is a big place so dont be deceived by the facade especially if youre the type who likes to take your time.

If you are in the French Quarter, definitely worth a visit. The part I liked best was the information on the history of Mardi Gras. Super fascinating how it all got started and cool to see a little window into the closed Balls surrounding the event. Then there is the costuming! Also, the information on the Battle of New Orleans was comprehensive and helped me understand that piece of history much better.

The Cabildo is a must-visit location for any tourist (or native like myself for that matter) that is interested in more than just the fun and debauchery to be had on Bourbon Street. It tells the story of New Orleans in a series of exhibits that are overflowing with information and beautiful, authentic artifacts from the areas history. The building itself is beautiful, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the multi-story museum is amazing. Geared more toward adults than children, there are, nonetheless, several exhibits that feature hands-on artifacts that older children may find interesting.

We went in and stood at the front desk to purchase our tickets for like five minutes. There were two people at the front desk and they were counting money. They did not even look up at us, and finally one of them said oh, well be with you in a minute and continued to count money. We decided to leave when it was apparent that counting the dollar bills was more important than selling us tickets. Dont go.

This was, by far, my favorite site to see in New Orleans. The museum uses objects, documents, and recreations to tell several stories: the Spanish Enlightenment, Spains role in the War of American Independence, and the Battle of New Orleans. While the latter is history also told elsewhere, the Cabildo emphasizes the importance of myth and commemoration to understanding the battles importance. The exhibits on Spanish history are fantastic. I left with an understanding of eighteenth-century Spain, Spanish colonies, and Spains contributions to American Independence. Bernardo de Galvez comes across as an important and little-known figure. Some exhibits, such as a diarama of a naval battle that includes flashes of light and cannon sounds are particularly creative. Should be mildly interesting for kids, great for history-minded adults. Fairly cheap, I spent 9$ with student and AAA discount. A great, inexpensive alternative to the WWII museum.
