Have been meaning to visit this pearl at Yale for a year and finally made a trek to New Haven. Impressive gift shop and free entry for all who visit. Multiple floors of special exhibition and a comprehensive permanent collection of important paintings. The space is modern and offers wonderful lighting and exceptional vistas of the exhibits from multiple levels allowing the guest to view and review pieces over and over with different perspective and almost sudden surprise. The Eileen Hogan exhibit currently on view was a delicious treat into the style and discipline of an extraordinary talent.
With timed ticketing, limited capacity, a mask requirement, sanitizer and one-way flows, a visit to YCBA is very safe. Go enjoy the wonderful art and Louis Kahns wonderful architecture!!
Beautiful building and amazing exhibition. This museum has a nice large exhibition, from classic painting and sculptures to contemporary art. The building itself its beautiful, it doesnt say much from the outside but the interior is modern, integrates the space with the exhibitions and with the outside light. This place exceeded my expectations. Very important to notice that the entry is free.
I like the Yale Center of British Art a lot. They have shown some really amazing contemporary British artists. I particularly enjoyed seeing works by Eileen Hogan and George Shaw. Truthfully, I’m not as interested in traditional painting although it appears the collection they have is good. The staff has been very nice every time I have visited. And you can’t argue with free! The gift shop is also wonderful and very nice people there too.
This is hands down my favorite museum in the world. Designed by famous architect Louis Khan (his last - albeit unfinished - work), it is an architectural marvel hosting some of the most beautiful artistic gems this world has ever seen. I’d especially recommend a trip to the library hidden at the museum’s center.
Took a very quick peek before leaving for home. The gift shop has some nice finds. Bought a Dr who mug where the TARDIS appears when you put in something hot. My friend will really like it. Plan to look around more next time Im in town.
We visited in June, 2019. My third visit, and my wifes second. I was looking for British and East Indian convergences and Victorian and Edwardian era art. We were not disappointed. This place is truly great. Everything everyone else has said about the gift shop and admission adds to the pleasant experience of visiting the the museum.
I really liked the art. Big paintings, small paintings. Cute paintings, scary paintings. All so good!
If I could rate it ten stars I would!! This is an excellent collection of art produced in Britain and places that used to be part of the British Empire. It is well worth the visit and it is right across the street from the the Yale Art Gallery with art from around the world.
Lovely collection of classical British art. Quiet and not crowded. I will definitely come back.
Loved That The Employees Were Well Versed About The Artists and Art Works/Exhibis, and Explained To A Group Of Veterans From Ages (21-73) About The Exhibits We Visited. Who Then Were All Able To Share and Discuss Thoughts, Feelings and Comments Concerning Pieces Of Art and Exhibits Visited During Our Tour.*The Yale Center For British Art Has Wonderful People Who Enjoy Sharing Their Knowledge and Passion With You.
An outstanding collection, including more paintings by the great J.M.W. Turner than any other museum in America. Only the Tate Britain has more. A wonderful array of Constable cloud paintings, as well as those classic evocative English landscapes. Great special exhibits.
One of my favorite local museums. The renovations are great and the place is even more beautiful. Someday Ill take a guided tour!
Much more contemporary art; new revolving installations; great gift shop. Best of all, the museum is free. Take advantage of the tours. Docents are very knowledgeable. Checkout the website for details about tours.
Very (VERY) clean & quiet the staff are very friendly and will help you with any questions you might have
Great art, huge selection, setup in such a way where you could easily digest everything in twenty minutes or stay for hours.
The Yale Center for British Art is another jewel in New Havens cultural crown that is not to be missed out on - especially since in the last few years they have started included rotating exhibits of more modern art that pair very well with their original collection of classical art. And just like the Yale University Art Gallery, this is free to visit, so dont hesitate to stop in if the opportunity presents itself.
Ive lived in New Haven for years and have been to the Yale Art Gallery several times and noticed this very museum across the street and never went in; I decided to finally go and to my surprise its free and open to the public. Beautiful, multilevel art exhibitions...Very Modern aesthetic and lovely art pieces. A must see!!
Nice collection of artwork...not as big as the Yale Art Gallery, but its a great place to explore especially if youre pressed for time.
Love it! Pretty quick stop but worth seeing while in that area.
It was very nice. I was impressed by the collection of 17th and 18th century paintings. The 4th floor was the only one open, but I look forward to seeing some of the new exhibits that they have on 2nd & 3rd floors when those floors reopen. On those floors they set up new exhibits.
Open to all & set upon a building that’s historic as well as an architects delight! The collection is pretty large and you shoud spend 2-3 hours here before spending rest of your time at the Art Gallery across the street. Of a few things CT offers, the area around Yale is the very best on offer!
Fantastic experience. Its a free museum! The staff was fantastic. The art, especially the fourth floor and the great room were top notch.
The staff here is great and helpful. Very good place to visit.
An art experience so amazing. Go and visit Connecticut.
Mr. Lee and all of the staff we (a grade school class) encountered were wonderful.
Excellent museum. Loved it. Amazing British Art. Never saw art like these before.
World class art museum. Dont miss it if you are in the area.
Beautiful art collection. Free and open to the public with multiple exhibit floors. Takes about three hours to see it all depending on how quickly you go. You need to go up the stairs or elevator to the right after you enter to reach the first exhibit floor. The public restroom is on the basement floor. Froyo is right around the corner as a treat after the museum. The main hall is sometimes used for events, but it shouldn’t prevent you from entering the museum and seeing the other floors.
Magnificent collection (largest collection of British art outside of the British Isles), medieval to modern, in a beautiful Lois Kahn building
Love the British art! Started on the 4th floor and couldnt finish! There are so many paintings and sculptures to see. Dates back from the 1600s. We cant wait to go back to see the rest (3 more floors to go)! Free admission and highly recommended!
Excellent museum in downtown New Haven. No excuse for missing this.
It is always a treat visiting this place. Dont miss the exhibit Migrating Worlds The Art of the Moving Image in Britain, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye paintings.
One of New Haven-s gems. Recent renovations updated the space while retaining the spirit of Kahns original design. The current exhibits featuring contemporary British painters is a treat.
Amazing! I loved the visit, even though I used to live in CT. I have been here a couple of times and it seems to constantly get better and better each time I visit!
An architectural masterpiece housing the finest collection dedicated to the exhibition of British works in New England. The museum specializes in two-dimensional works, particularly drawings and paintings, with some key three-dimensional pieces. An in-house archive, library, and two art-restoration laboratories transform the museum into a didactic experience and a source of innovative scholarship. Dont miss the chance to see this collection, free and open to the public—although special accomodations for use of the library and archives, as well as access to the laboratories, must be arranged in advance as all access is regulated by Yale University.
I dont usually like museums but I enjoyed this one. Very wide range of fascinating and beautiful art. And the gift shop is lovely.
This is the best center for British art in at least a 50 mile radius. They have a lot of British art. So if youre interested in British art, I can definitely recommend the Yale Center for British art. On the other hand, if you dont like British art, then this is not the place for you. You have to decide for yourself.
Ive been here on each of my visits to Yale, and Ill go there again. Its a terrific museum.
Marvelous collection. Kind staff. Pleasant and new. Very generous (free admission)
Lovely place to check out some British art. Had some really good exhibits going on and its also free!
Beautiful galleries. Took about 3 hours to work my way from the top floor to the ground. Good lighting and spaces. All the artwork had informative placards on the side which mentioned historical information about each piece.
Free to the public, easy to locate excellent staff and displays
We loved it. The way the art is laid by period makes it very interesting and enjoyable. The building itself is beautiful. Hard to believe its free.
Always something unique plus an extensive collection.
Excellent museum with quality exhibits. A beautifully designed and executed building.
This is great Yale Museum. Free admission and a really nice permanent collection as well as special exhibits.
Great collection! The collection is really reach, plus, there is always a temporary exposition too! Adviced!
Its freeHas a decent collection
Wonderful museum. Huge quantity and good quality of mostly paintings and other 2D art. Its free, so why not stop in?
Super!!! Must see if you love art.
Time stands still here. You will lose a sense of who you are and become melded with the allegorical world of the distant past. I come away from this iconic museum feeling a connection with the ancient paintings and sculpture there. World Class in every way. Not to be missed by any person who wants to get out of their box and into the heady zeitgiest of the world.
Comprehensive collection of ancient and modern British art in many forms- from paintings, scultures to pottery.
Beautiful collection. One of my favorite museums on the East Coast.
Historicaly informative, well curated, beautiful architecture
My wife is a docent at YCBA. Great place to learn and be entertained at any age, all for free. Even the building itself is amazing and iconic! A must see.
Quite a bit packed into this place, make sure to allow yourself 3-4 hours to fully enjoy all the art work.
Absolutely love the gorgeous Elizabethan paintings !
Great gallery. Also free to get in.
Excellent setting, really good range of top quality artworks over all eras, not too big. Plenty of. Seating in front of the artworks to rest your feet and eyes. Friendly staff.
What a great place to spend several days because you can’t see it all in a single day without complete sensory overload. Between the depth of art and the architecture of the building I think you could spend several days enjoying everything from primitive African head dresses to the masters to modern artists like Picasso and Pollack. Tired of culture and in need of sustainance? New Haven has some of the most varied and delicious food offerings in Connecticut. I can’t wait to go back.
Just as expected for a prestigious University ! Amazing
4 floors with a mixture of modern and classical British art
The museum has beautiful exhibitions, some of my favorite paintings by George Stubbs, and friendly and helpful staff.
Yale arts museums always stimulate inspire and entice ones mind
One of the best museums in the area and the gift shop has some of the most unique in New Haven, worth a visit!
Large variety of British Art from various periods. Friendly staff who are very informative. Admission is free.
Just really beautiful. And knowing that the museum uses natural lighting is pretty cool. Go and sit and just take it all in.
Reminds me of the Courtauld in London with similar artists showcased such as Ben Nicholson, JMW Turner, Constable. Especially found Constables autographed letter interesting. The collection is housed in a modern setting by Louis Kahn. Free admission. Limited parking available.
This is an outstanding art collection in a very cool Louis Khan building. It has some particularly fine examples of Turner and Constable in a particularly lovely corner of the building--I could happily spend hours sitting in that area. Must sees are the Long Gallery, the Turners, the more modern collection on the second floor, and whatever exhibit is on the 3rd floor. The gift shop is very pleasant. You can join the museum for free wherever you live, and they send you lovely invitations to the latest exhibits in the mail.
Went on a field trip with a fourth grade class. They really enjoyed the experience and they were allowed to sketch. They want to go again.
Unique and controversial building from the outside it doesnt seem to really fit in with all yellow stomach but is that a requirement? inside what a great collection of words its deceptively large inside to allow enough time we had a chance to do a docent-led tour which was very good and very well informed.
Free admission, nice artwork, quiet atmosphere, but I felt like I was being constantly watched by the staff so it made me feel uncomfortable.
Wish an amazing gem. Besides the Louis Kahn masterpiece building, the collection is breathtaking.
Just go. Great Place.
ONE OF MY TOP PICKS OF NEW HAVEN!! The Yale of British Art Museum is a beautiful place full of lavish paintings of Britain! The whole place makes you go back 100 years ago to see these original pieces of art paintings and more! A MUST-GO-SEE PLACE!!
One of the great collections of British art thanks to the Mellon donation. The Stubbs horse painting are memorable. The build designed by Kahn make it a mandatory visit for architecture fans. Do not miss this museum.
Visiting the gallery have always been inspirational. My mind was entertained with beautiful and amazing paintings. To be surrounded by those paintings in Long Gallery was unbelievable. Thats why it is always a pleasure to visit here again and again.
One of the most uplifting museum experiences so far, there was a music concert in the centre hall, while we wandered through the galleries packed with beautiful art...
It is very bab for kids
Excellent museum on British arts
A impressive art gallery!
Exquisite art and very quiet. Plenty of room to gaze and reflect.
Very nice paintings and sculptures
British Art between 1550 and 1850 is an extraordinary view into history. Everyone should visit regularly.
Loved visiting YCBA and tour of George Shaw exhibition, with docent Mary Kee
Excellent exhibits. Free entrance. Staff around every corner with knowledge about every piece.
Beautiful space. Friendly greeters. Took a full 2 hours just to explore one floor. I recommend lunch at Oleas as a break if you want to return later in the afternoon. Free parking nearby in Yale lots if youre lucky. :)
Modern, neat and quiet place, nice personnel and of course great masterpieces!
Wonderful museum. Definitely worth the trip to New Haven.
