Always the best place to end our Napa visits.. the final taste in Napa always has to be one of the top three reds or our visit isnt the same.. the wine educators are some of the best California wine country has to offer.. it would take a monumental winery over time to take its place..
Very nice property, very nice wine tasting experience. Their wine person who took care of me was super polite and knowledgeable. The price of bottles is still very expensive (too expensive) in my opinion, probably same as other wineries around. But just doesnt make any sense if you compare to french wines. For 30$ in france you have a very very good wine, for 50-60$ that s amongst the most expensive wines you can find at a local wine shops (outside of the chateau margaux etc) and you have a spectacular wine. I dont understand this price difference. It s not like France has bad wines... Check how much is a côté rôtie or st julien or Gevrey Chambertin or Pessac Léognan is in france... Not more than 50-60$... Then how to justify paying 150$ or more here for a bottle... I mean Napa has good wines but come on.. 150$ for most bottles ...people are losing the sense of what money is worth I think... I ll mention they have a few bottles more affordable around 50-60$ but it just seems more affordable because the other ones are outrageous... Still 50-60$ is a lot compared to what you pay in italy france spain for same quality
One of the best wineries out there. Awesome wine. Great facility.
I love you Stags Leap...greetings from TURKEY(TOKAT/TURHAL)...
Walked in without reservation and both decided to buy a bottle to waive tasting fees (we were both familiar with the vineyard and regular buyers of Artemis). Tasting was excellent with a couple of Fay wines offered beyond the original list. This, as they say, is the good stuff. Not crowded at all in the morning when we went but this was also a Friday morning in February so well out of their busy season.
Stags leap is OK. Thats it. The grounds are very nice with a huge vineyard backing up to the mountains. The tasting room is very nice with floor to ceiling Windows giving you the great view. The obvious choice is the premium tasting where you get the expensive flight. They have one of the more pricey selections compared to other wineries so the expectations are high. The wine is no where near worth the price. There are better selections for more than half the price in Napa. Overall a C+ experience.
Purchased 6 bottles online. Emailed me wanting my date of birth, provided it back by email, then wanted drivers license, what next social security number. It ships with a 21+ signature requirement. I’m buying a few bottles of wine, not applying for a mortgage. Get real! Lost me as a customer.
Really friendly staffs with phenomenal wine.If you havent heard about Judgment of Paris, Google it.The style of the wine is slightly more old world. So if you are big fan of California Cabs, go for SLV or FAY. Cask23 is really good, but not as jammy as regular California Cabs, not to mention the depth of the wine provides wide range of aromas. The wine club is worth joining if you fancy their wine. It is totally worth the join.
Great place my son really enjoy working there
The wines, especially the SLV and Cask, are the best, but too pricey to give it a 5. Cask is a unique blend of FAY and SLV each year while the Armillary is a 50/50 blend. All the wines I mentioned are 100% cabernet sauvignon which apparently is not that common (because the labeling rules allow you to label as a Cab Sauv as long as it has a minimum of 75%). This is one reason I would pay a premium for SLWCs wines. Another reason is that its just that good. 2015 Cask and 2014 SLV are our favorites... FAY is a bit too soft for us. Their wine club is pretty good in that they really try to make sure you are happy with your wine selections, and they also have a couple pickup events which make it fun. Photos are from the Fire and Water Tour/Tasting.
SLV or cast 23. Top rate service
Historic Winery. Leans heavily upon their heritage and prestige. Current wines are good but again expensive.
One of the best experiences in the whole valley. We had the best time at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars!
Great outdoor tasting experience for a good price, tasting some exciting wines
Terrific venue. A little commercialized but great wine.
We had a great time int he tasting room and loved the 2014 SLV Cab.
The first vineyard that put Napa on the world wine map. The tasting flights are quite pricey, for a good reason. Their Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon may be the best one Ive had in 10 years. Go during the week for sure.
We just returned from Napa and visited 13 vineyards during our 3 full days there (2 were full tours). We sampled several top-rated wines in this charming tasting room and strolled outside to take in the view of their vineyard. The region gets its name from a popular local legend that tells of a stag eluding hunters by leaping to freedom across the district’s landmark peaks. The “valley within the valley” is home to some of Napa’s most famous vineyards.Enclosed by the Stags Leap Palisades to the east, and rolling hills and the Napa River to the west, Stags Leap District is occasionally described as the “valley within the valley.”I didnt get a chance to do the cellers, just the tasting room, but Ive heard that if you have time to do the whole tour, its a knock-out. View of the Fay Vineyard and best view of Stags Leap. There are literally hundreds of wineries in the Valley, and Stags Leap needs to be near the top of any list for visitors. The winery itself is wonderful, but the people and the wine are beyond wonderful
Superb place and most importantly, great wine and amazing service!
Wonderful tastings every time I go. Staff is friendly and inviting even for a well-known, higher volume place. Been a club member off and on and its one of my favorite views in all of Napa. And the wine is amazing too
Awesome place. Pure wine heaven.
We did the tour that took us through the cellars. It was very informative and entertaining. Our tour guide Allison was very friendly and knowledgeable. Everything was top notch and of course the wines were delicious. Highly recommend!
45USD to taste some over priced fruit bombs (150-295 a bottle!). None had any structure, they were serving 2016s, straight out of the bottle, no time to breath. This is wine for Americans who dont really like wine, but need to impress their fellow Americans. Avoid this scam of a vineyard, try Pina up the road a bit. Their tasting room is basically a garage, but their wine blows away everything at stags leap.
Wonderful tasting experience with Yvette. Personable and patient staff. Wines are fantastic and pricey but probably well worth it.
Beautiful winery both interior and exterior. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and really incredible wines! Loved their reds in particular although the white wine we tasted as our opener was super fresh.Definitely need a reservation but you should totally try and make time to drop into Stags Leap while in wine country.
I was first introduced to Stags’ Leap Wine Cellars in Napa, California with their Artemus cabernet wines in 2003, with a later visit to the vineyards where I was introduce to Cask 23, from the same grapevines that won the best red category in the 1976 Judgement of Paris against such French nobility wines as Château Mouton-Rothschild, Château Haut-Brion, and Château Montrose. The full review article can be read on the Wine Dine and Play website blog. Please comment and share...
Amazing wines, and a beautiful vineyard with tremendous views.
Sensational wines in a beautiful setting, if a little corporate/commercial. The servers give you a lot of marketing spiel instead of any commentary of value - but, the wines are truly stunning, so not sure that matters so much!
Jeff was the best host. Thank you so much! We walked in and had to wait for 15min, but they had nice seating area for those ppl. Great view, great wine.
We really enjoyed our tour and tasting! Alison was wonderful. She really made the experience unique and memorable. She was very knowledgeable, fun, and gave great recommendations. And of course the wine was delicious! Be sure you mean to come to this one and not Stags’ Leap (notice the apostrophe) because it’s easy to make that mistake.
The epitome of wine tasting. Vast selection of wines to sample. Beautiful! Location. Excellent for all ages. Great staff!
Great experience, extremely friendly staff, but most of all, delicious wine at a great price for a tasting. We just walked in and they couldn’t have been more welcome, we’re pretty much the Griswalds
Terri was great. Nice tasting. Very good experience. Two wineries, two thumbs up... Cant wait to come back..
Good tasting. Cask 23 and SLV are beautiful. Not a big fan of FAY.
Delicious cabernets representative of the Stags Leap AVA--a southeastern foothill region that basks in the afternoon light. The Fay is more approachable and fruit forward, the SLV more tightly wound and structured, the Cask attempts to blend the best characteristics of both.Recent vintages (drought/semi-drought years) have all been stellar. Though the 13 Cask received a near-perfect 99 RP and is therefore scarce (arguably a greater vintage), the 12-15 vintages across the board are all very good.Price point is in line with well-known Napa cab producers as youre paying for the provenance (a Shafer Hillside Select from the same region will still run you $50-100 more vs. a Cask 23).Their claim to fame was the 1976 Judgement of Paris, along with Montelenas chardonnay, beat out similar French wines; also briefly featured in a wine manga called the Drops of God ;)There was a lot of worry after this place went corporate and sold out--some charm is gone, but the wine has not degraded. Not the best of Napa views as youre generally staring at a lifeless rock, but the close proximity to the vines does immerse you a bit in the terroir--which is further highlighted by the Fay and SLV.Generally friendly hosts if its not too busy of a weekend. Stress and tensions may run high however if youre fighting the crowd (then again just like other wineries in Napa, or Disney Land). Reservations at least a week in advance is recommended, and required for larger parties.Go for the experience and collect for the provenance. Just dont buy the Artemis here because its cheaper at Costco.
Went here for my wifes Birthday on 9/17, had a phenomenal tour and ended up joining the wine club. I wasnt a fan of wine until this trip and this was one of the Wineries that changed my opinion that trip. We were just back for an anniversary trip and did the Fire and Water tour with Ken as our tour guide, great tour and even better tasting. Will be one of our must stops every time we visit!
Amazing place but disappointing wines. Expected some red wines less acidic.
Fantastic atmostphere with tasteful wine scent.
Quite expensive wine tasting at 45usd per person, and we weren’t amazed by the 4 wines we tasted. The tasting is a rather quick in and out experience, no tour included. Our host was friendly, but was running around accommodating several groups of people at once. This winery was recommended to us by a friend, but we most likely won’t pass on the recommendation. On a side note - while reading a little about the winery, I also noticed the company is owned partially by Altria - and I now might have indirectly supported the tobacco industry... not great.
Its where it all started. Napa owes a lot to this winery. A lot of history. Great wines. Friendly staff. Make sure to make reservations in advance. Pretty pricey.
Beautiful vineyard and tasting room, with friendly and courteous staff. The wines here are very good, with some being some of the best wines weve tasted. Would definitely recommend coming here. This winery is historic due to the Judgment in Paris, it announced to the world that wines from the Napa valley were here to stay.
Good wine, but a bit in the pricey side. We enjoyed a taste in. Their tasting room which was beautiful and had amazing views. A nice place to stop if in the area but be prepared to taste wines in the $150-$295 range.
It’s sad to have to write this. We’re gutted. As a background, we used to be members (cask23) of Stag’s Leap until about 4 years ago. At this time, we enjoyed their great wines and their most relaxed atmosphere that didn’t smack of pretension but could have done so given the quality. A highlight of our calendar was picking up our shipment; going up to the winery and seeing the staff who we got to know really well. The winery has tanked. It has changed completely, beyond all recognition and for the worse. It is such an awful shame. I wonder if it’s under new management who have taken it off in a different direction..? This is the only explanation I can think of.I took my wife and daughters here for a Mothers’ day treat. It all went wrong from there.1. “Concierge” was extremely rude and talked down to us. It was clear we were judged as we entered through the door (was it that we had kids? clearly we’re trouble; maybe we weren’t wearing the right clothes either..?). Her tone changed as she talked to me compared to the previous people who were clearly the “right” clientele.2. I had the audacity to ask if we could sit outside. “No”, was the abrupt answer. “May I ask why?”. This took her aback, and she had to think of a reason. “Because we don’t have enough staff” came the stiff response. (Not enough staff to let people sit out on their patio on this beautiful day? They’ve seriously misjudged that one!). However, that was clearly a falsehood: there were plenty of people already on the patio drinking wine. Again, clearly we were not welcome, and it was evident that it was more about who she thought we were.3. Forget about enjoying a nice picnic. Ha! [This used to be one of the best things about the winery. We were always told in the past — “Sure, of course you can bring a picnic; we love having families enjoying picnics here”]. Not any more. I was practically chastised for even mentioning the dirty word “picnic”. Forget that one I guess.4. Forget about purchasing and enjoying a bottle of their wine in their grounds. Now you must purchase *only* a tasting (now $45, whoa). Oh, you can take bottles home, but don’t even think about asking if you can enjoy a bottle any more. Again, this was clearly a stupid question to ask and I was quickly put back in my place by the “concierge”.5. Their Merlot is off the menu and replaced with some inferior options.6. Dogs are no longer welcome; we don’t have a dog any more and we weren’t trying to challenge this. However it is testament to just how different this place has become. A far cry from the days when the staff used to love petting our black lab who lay beneath the table in the Silverado sun as we enjoyed our Fay.7. Families are no longer welcome, for sure. This place is not set up as at all family friendly any more. Clearly we were seen as a nuisance.8. You’ll need a reservation or you’ll probably wait. I guess this is completely deliberate to try and give the image that their wine is worth waiting for. [Perhaps if they hired enough staff they could even fill some of the numerous empty tables..?]We loved this place before — we seriously did. Sadly, Stag’s Leap has gone seriously downhill as it has changed. It’s recently built new tasting room is sadly indicative of their pretentious self-elevated image they are clearly trying hard to project. For anyone that knew this winery before it went this course, you will be just as heartbroken and disappointed as we were.
The service wasnt great, the lady in the tasting room decided to walk out and stay gone for 20 minutes. But the winery is legendary so you need to go at least once.
To Bob, Carla & Samantha: THANK YOU!! What a well-rounded event with Stags Leap Wine Cellars! The team greeted us with wine in-hand and a view in-sight! We were IMMEDIATELY blown away by their hospitality.Their renovated tasting room is just gorgeous! Even the restrooms are jaw-dropping!You must have Carla take you through the wine hallways and hear the story of The Pendulum. Its lovely, absolutely lovely! The presentation of space & courses at dinner were so impressive. I wish it was my space to sell!
Great views. Very overpriced wines. Rude hostess.
Great wine. Cameron was an excellent server, very knowledgeable! Pricey, but would go again
Pete was a fun host; reasonable tasting price and some yummy wines. They treated us very well and we learned about the history of the vineyard too which was lovely.
Very nice tour of this historic property by Ken. The tour started with an overview of the history of how Stags Leap Vineyards came to be, followed by a visit of their caves and a wine tasting. The early part of the tour could have been more concise, but the wine tasting room was superb. The cheese pairings on offer were all very good calls, and the room itself was gorgeous. The wines showcased were very nice. Probably a must-do tour if you are seriously about understanding Napa Valley wines and history.
For a $50 tasting, you don’t get a chair to sit on? I guess they want you to leave fast. I refuse to subscribe to a place that doesn’t respect me and my comfort. I didn’t feel welcome, and left to look for other more personable tasting rooms.
My fiancé brought me for a tour here, it was a beautiful facility and we had a great time!
Love this place! Great wine and great views!
One of the more memorable visits for me as its an absolutely gorgeous property. Very modern. Not the cheapest tasting but staff are super friendly and personable. Their 2013 Artemis Cabernet is really nice for the price
Tasting menu of the Chardonnay and 3 Cabs
The patio is shaded and devine. Allison made our visit delightful. The only bummer is that their club doesnt ship to Mich, or we would have joined in a heartbeat.
The staff here is really nice and their Cask 23 is something else! Never tasted a wine quite like it! Definitely a must visit if in the area.
Very poor service. Inspite of being a winemaker they did not give me a tasting and asked me to come on a weekday .. and if I wanted to do tasting on weekend they wanted to charge me 45$ inspite of being a part of the industry .. there are much better places Around in Napa for a good wine experience
Fabulous wines, beautiful view. Loved our host Josaiah.
Beautiful grounds. Delicious wines. Excellent tour guides. Knowledgeable and friendly.
Nice wine!!
The cabs are top notch, but the experience is just average. Come for the wine (though its expensive), but if its a tour, tasting room ambiance or fun atmosphere is what youre after, then there are plenty of better options nearby. Note: Theres a new tasting room due to open in a couple of months which may improve the ambiance somewhat.
Incredible vista. Vik was a great host and source of info. The place is incredible, well worth a visit... and the wines will meet everyones taste.
Alison was very informative and such a sweetheart.
Every time I have visited, the customer service has been great and the wine superb. The wine club is flexible with shipments. The staff is knowledgeable and the atmosphere is relaxing. I only wish they had cheese or charcuterie plate to pair.
We have been members for about two years now they never disappoint! Kid friendly laid back staff always great wines.
Attended a catered wine cellar dinner with a group of 16 here; truly outstanding food and wonderful hosts from SLWC. I recall going here for a tasting and I was really turned off by the cost of -- and the attitudes around -- a tasting. That said, the dinner here was incredible. Highly recommended for a special, high-touch group event (talk to Carla to arrange!).
Julie, was very informative, she did a great job, we joined the club due to her presentation
I always love visiting here. Great history and great wine. The design of the wine cave is amazing - a Focoult pendulum, shimmering ceilings and light fixtures shaped like comets.
Nice spot, good wines
Unfortunately we were 5 mins late for our tasting and they refused us for our tasting. The reason we were late is a wine member set us up for a tasting and we werent sure if it was the winery or cellar. We tried calling ALL day and no one answered the phone. We took a change and picked winery which was wrong. When speaking with a supervisor he was unwilling to help us or even offer a resolution. I am a huge fan of their wine but will never recommend it from here on out. Very unfortunate. Definitely not how you treat a wine member. And also he tried to tell us its a law he cant pour after 4 15 but thy were still servicing outside. The worst customer service Ive seen.
Ourstanding cabernet
If you are a fan of Cabernet then this is a great winery. Beautiful location located about 8 miles out of Napa. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Wine is on the pricier side but excellent.
We started our day in Napa at Stags Leap and it could not have been better! It was some of the best wine we tasted all day and the staff, especially Kaleigh, was beyond amazing. The tasting felt intimate and personal and the view from the tasting room was breathtaking. We really felt like we were the only people there even though the place was pretty crowded. I would highly recommend Stags Leap!
Absolutely fantastic Cabernet and the property is absolutely beautiful. Both compliment watch other extremely well. Definitely worth visiting!
Amazing wines. The hostess/sommelier ran us through the wines and was awesome.
Loved it...became Club 23 members...a must stop while in Napa...
Great wine tasting. Purchased three of our favorites and a couple shirts.
We took our family to Napa and this was the 1st tasting we did as a family. I cant tell you how nice an experience it was. They took time with us and explained a lot about tasting and their wines. Wonderful patience with questions and generous with tasting. We joined their club and look forward to the occasional treat of Stags Leap!
Excellent knowledgeable service and of course you cant beat the wines!
Beautiful location, the wine cave its really nice and modern. Customer service has been great and the wine asome. Strongly recommended.
$40 for the prestige and $25 for the standard tasting. Very nice wines and helpful service. I think Napa wineries should stop charging for tastings, are they in the wine selling business or in the wine tasting business?
Janet was amazing...friendly and informative. And the wines speak for themselves.
The wine is consistently fabulous and the hospitality is fabulously consistent.
Amazing wine. Great atmosphere.
Fairly disappointing. The wines are very good and the tour is ok, but like most larger wineries these days, they are charging a ridiculous amount of money for a tasting and tour. Our tasting was $100 for the two of us and I think it would have been spent better elsewhere on a nice bottle of wine.
The wine tasting policy is extremely inflexible. New wines were introduced, however did not meet their guidelines to waive tasting fee. I do not recommend that you go here. Move on to a place that is family owned, and company owned.
If youre a fan of deep, dark fruit cabernets, then Stags Leap Wine Cellars is the winery for you. My family made an impromptu stop here near the end of the day, and Jeff gave us a fantastic tasting experience. We had the opportunity to taste a variety of SLs cabernets while enjoying the sun outside. Jeff also referred us to SLWCs sister winery, Conn Creek, which is absolutely worth a visit.
What a huge disappointment. I used to be such a fan our their wines (even did a MBA project on a new wine concept for them.) In short, dont go here unless you want to be poorly treated by a bunch of staff that sizes you up and judges you from the minute you drive on the property. There are plenty of other wineries in the area that are happy to earn your business. Stags Leap doesnt seem to care. If youre planning a trip, do yourself a favor and skip right by them.Heres the long story: I arrived here Sunday to celebrate labor day with a few friends. My girlfriend and I called in advance to make an appointment, but were told by the staff one wasnt necessary. We showed up around 2PM and from the minute we walked into the tasting area were met with an unbelievable amount of attitude, snobbery and condescension from the wait staff. Aaron, the Tasting Room Manager, first walked out to our party and asked If we had a reservation or had been told it was OK to show up with a group of 8. (We called twice before, including once the day before.) After we explained our case, he said he could accommodate us. (Mind you, this was said with the most begrudging of attitudes.)Another waiter gave us a cursory introduction to the tasting menus, after which we were served our first tasting. Aaron approached me at this point as I was touring the inside of the tasting room and told me he was going to ask us to leave, as some of the wait staff had complained about certain members in our party. I asked what exactly was done or said to have this reaction without warning, and Aaron just repeated that some of the staff had said some members of our party were overserved. Aaron then asked me to call our limo ASAP and get your party off of the property. I tried to make our case and get off with a warning, but Aaron and his manager Mel were standoffish and offered us a tasting the following weekend. I explained that this was an empty offer, since he surely knew that almost no one (especially out-of-towners) could take them up on the offer. Apparently not many people call them out on this, since he didnt have a good response to it. By this point our trip was pretty much ruined and we decided to cut the weekend short and head back home.In order to at least make it seem like the winery cared about ruining our day and try to calm the frayed nerves in my party, I asked Mel if I could buy a bottle of wine for the road and just tell my group that the winery gave it to us for the trouble. He declined and said he couldnt. I asked him why he wouldnt be able to sell to me, since I was clearly utilizing logic beyond what someone who was overly intoxicated could. I didnt get a very good explanation or response from him, so I cut my losses and decided to leave. After waiting in the parking lot (in 90 degree heat) for our limo for 10-15 minutes, our limo finally arrived and we left, vowing to never return to Stags Leap Wine Cellars. In my opinion, there are much better wineries in the area that would be happy to have your business and treat you respectfully. It was those other places that earned $2-3k of our business that day.
Friendly and knowledgeable sommelier. Great wine. Awesome tasting room.
Came here with a living social deal. The wine caves were fun and Im a huge pendulum fan (they have one in the center of the caves). The cabs we had live up to the hype and are pricey accordingly.
Best place to do wine tasting. Not rushed, enjoy tasting while enjoying the amazing view.
In February of 2008 I visited SLWC. Ive had some older upper tier Stags Leap Cabs. They were very nice. Im in my early to mid 20s, but I am and was in the wine industry at the time. They wanted to charge $40 to taste their 3 high end wines. Since Ive been in the wine business, Ive never been charged for a tasting. I have a chance every day to sell the Stags Leap brand. They let me taste their lower tier wines, which were terrible for the price. When I see a bottle of Stags Leap in my customers hands, I recommend something else. Its great that they helped put Napa on the wine world map. The woman in the tasting room was stuck up, snobby, rude and unhelpful.
