This museum has an excellent glass exhibit as of July 2020, and many other very interesting exhibits displaying West Michigan artists, as well as nationally renown native american photographers and exhibits. There is also a good blend of local young artists. Lots of photography, painting, pottery, and sculpture.
This is a great museum. Small, but packed with beautiful art of many different mediums. I was so impressed I became a member on my first visit. Highly recommended.
The MMA is such a gem in our community. I went to the postcard sale recently and the staff was taking necessary safety precautions to make sure everyone was safe. The staff is always friendly, the building is gorgeous, the permanent collection is impressive, and the rotating art is always intriguing. The Muskegon Museum of Art is a class act.
The art inside is always top notch but employees are not following six feet distancing from patrons. Had staff block entrances to rooms and the exit to the building. I did not feel safe.
The museum was lovely but our enjoyment was ruined after being assailed by staff and forced to forego our, much safer, face shields for cloth masks. The face shields stop one from touching ones face - block all air-born droplets, both coming and going, and allow for unrestricted breathing. All this safety was given up for a cloth mask that one must constantly readjust after speaking, does not protect the eyes, nose or mouth against air-born droplets, and has one constantly touching ones face in an effort to keep it in place, and restricts breathing. The security director even when so far as to print an outdated CDC guideline (and its ONLY a guideline) about full face shields to force us to switch to the much less safe nose/mouth masks. I will never return to this museum - have revoked my patronage, and will spread the word everywhere I can about forcing patrons to use a far less safe method of protection. Horrible.
Quiet is always being exhibitedA very calming place
Nice small art museum. The building is set up nice. Its great that they usually display a lot of local art attractions. In the end I wouldnt pay to go through it.
Purchase your admission ticket from the gift shop on the lower level. The museum is small enough for one to see everything in a short span of time without having to walk too much. I appreciate having spent my afternoon visiting! You may take the stairs or use the elevator to reach the second floor where the main exhibits are located. Thanks for reading my review!
Muskegon Museum of Art is the most beautiful, impressive art museum Ive been to in the state of Michigan (Im counting the Detroit Institute of Art on that list as well and the MMA beats it, hands down). The permanent collection is bigger than one can imagine and they switch it up regularly. The special exhibits are to die for. They always have cutting edge, stunning works. And the people!! I cant begin to say enough about them. Incredible, kind, friendly...exactly the type of wonderful people you come to expect to find in Muskegon. Charles Hackley left an endowment to the museum and they use that very well, purchasing and curating a beautiful collection. (Insiders note: in the permanent collection, there is a number and year on each plaque. These indicate the year purchased and the number in that year purchased. ie 5/1894. Gives even more impact, to me, of how dear Charles Hackleys endowment is to the city he loved.) There is also a lovely gift shop with lots of unique things and the programs they offer are wonderful. The MMA is the embodiment of the grace and beauty of Muskegon.
The displays were very well done, costs are very inexpensive too. Children 17 or younger are free.
What a fantastic facility, I visited for a college project and really enjoyed my visit beyond an assignment. The art is spectacular, and the festival of trees was a definite plus! Im glad Muskegon has this wonderful facility.
Really great museum and collection.
Great people there! Cool place!
As far as Michigan is concerened, this museum is second ONLY to the DIA. Excellent, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Took my grandson end of February. He was able to identify the artists on the murals outside after our visit. Yes, he was that enthusiastic.
Very nice small city art museum. Some noteworthy pieces, Winslow Homer, Picasso, but what I really enjoy are the visiting exhibits. Quite frankly l prefer this museum to the Grand Rapids. Well worth a visit.
Went for the Valentines Puzzles & Pizza. Great time! This is the 2nd year weve attended & had a Blast both times!!
Festival of Trees was amazing! So many cool ideas!
Very friendly staff! Small museum but interesting. Loved the actual buildings interior architecture and historical atmosphere! The early landscape and portrait paintings were wonderful! My teen daughter avoided the modern nude type exhibits, there were some...Small gift shop cozy and well stocked!
Wonderful museum in a tight knit community. Have new events regularly along with their amazing permanent collection.
I really enjoy the visiting exhibits. Quite frankly but I prefer this museum.
Cute little museum. If your in Muskegon and want something to do this is definitely worth the money. Took us around an 1 - 1.5 hrs to get though and was very educational. I quite enjoyed it.
Sons was informative and interesting. The adjacent exhibit on the art of New York Citys first black ad executive contained bright watercolors that incorporated surprising geometric shapes. Loved them. The antique puzzles were delightful. The comedian, Hen Sapp, in the free program at 5:30 was hilarious. Thanks for the variety, and free admission after 4.
The Festival of Trees is a great opportunity to visit and support our little gem of a art museum.
Nice atmosphere, cute gift shop. Always has events going on and education. Good for kids as well- check out kids events. They work well with local organisations too. I did AmeriCorps and they let us have a gallery to do events for kids and volunteer at existing events. Love their willingness to collaborate and focus on education.
Amazing art work.
This was our first visit to the museum, but wont be the last. Their was an awesome exhibition of local students at and ranged from kindergarten to 12th grade. There were many amazing pieces in many different mediums. The permanent collection is very nice for a smaller city. The staff was very nice and informative.
Very I interesting photography of the Indian culture and lifestyle.
My mother & I visited the museum to see the Edward S. Curtis exhibit of American Indian photography. It was truly beautiful, as is the museum itself. The Regional Exhibition of Art was open & we enjoyed experiencing the art. The variety of art was very interesting. The staff was very helpful & friendly.
Very elegant small museum. Liked the prize winning paintings and new acquisitions.
A very nice museum which is very well lit. It was a very nice Atmosphere. Not the largest of museums, however it was well done. They had some very nice exhibits. I didnt recognize any of the names but they were nice pieces. The price is fair at $10 and the staff is super helpful.Overall a solid 4 stars. Would I return? I think I would. On a side note I like the design of this gallery much better than Grand Rapids Gallery.
The only reason we went was for the Lego display. Even though we had some discount coupons we were charged for the museum and an additional charge for the Lego exhibit. What they had was nice but my money would have better spent if I had taken my grandkids to Legoland.
Average place. Guard followed us to every exhibit making it very uncomfortable to enjoy the new pieces
Muskegon puts maximum effort into getting exhibits. I saw the Edward Curtis exhibit and was blown away. The museum rid however, decide to put a huge oblisk on our protected burial grounds. In our way, the ground is not to be removed and disturbed only to put our people to rest. They were not sensitive of our ways and exercised white privilege. They even had my tribe pay a portion to honor our own people. Some of our council people, not accustomed to our old ways because of assimilation, approved this sculpture without talking to the spiritual leaders who keep those bones. They made right and called the project off. They also gave back a half an acre.
Great exhibits and really friendly docents. Great activities for the kids, too!
We love the MMA! Go check it out!
Absolutely amazing Museum, with highly professional staff and employees. The works and programs they display are all top notch.
Festival of trees always is good
What a wonderful experience. Junior and Senior high students in the area should be encouraged by local school principals to attend.
Had the privilege of seeing the Edward S. Curtis, THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN EXHIBIT, at the Muskegon Museum of Art. It was excellent for lack of a better word. Educational beyond major, beautiful, and detailed. Thank you for the unforgettable displays, the maps, pictures, and the works of Mr Curtis. The work of the Muskegon Museum of Art, is so appreciated along with all that are involved to make it happen. A big thank you to my sister for asking me all. A must see. Wear comfortable shoes.
You got to go this place is awesome
This was a good spot to visit ...educational

Its amazing that this little gem is here in Muskegon, and we are fortunate to have it. Great curated exhibits that flow through and the permanent exhibits are impressive too. I love it here.
Nice place, some great rotating exhibitions. The festival of trees is really fun. Great place to bring kids.
Amazing art of the best kind and it is my preferred gift shop.
Lovely museum just the right size for this small city. AND, they put on an AWESOME exhibit of Curtis Native American photographs. Included lots of insight on his style, the way he went about acquiring photos, and some good historical context to help us better read the photos -- yes, they were staged; but yes, too, he definitely caught something deep in the human emotions and dignity of his subjects. HURRY this exhibit ends soon I believe.
We went to see the Christmas tree event, but stayed to check out the whole place. I will definitely be back.
Beautiful peices of art. Lots of events. Kid friendly. Great place for the whole family.
Great place. Warm and comfortable because of the people that guide you. Wonderful experience in downtown Muskegon.
Small. Perfect for the sorry attention span of my daughters
This Museum has a variety of artwork, ranging from Picasso to modern collections that change frequently. The interior is beautiful, and the staff is highly informative.

Great museum and the member rate is great.
Nice reception for Tami! Shes on her way to a new endeavor.
Well placed exhibits, many mediums of art. Amazing, intriguing and opens up insight into others experiences & cultures. Very enriching, relaxing, enlightening.
This small museum is a real treasure. Outstanding permanent collection and fantastic exhibits.
Very nice place. My husband and I went from the area but the kids were gone so we went to muskegon to check it out. We walked in an hour before closing and she only charged us half price
Muskegon Museum of Art has surprisingly large collection 4 a city this size of course the city was larger before the collapse of Industry. The exhibit I focused on was Winfred Rembert and Sarah Wagner. Normally I think the $8 fee is a little high but but the second Saturday of each month is free with family activities.
A nice place to relax and watch your mind slip away.
First time there, not as big as I thought it was.
I loved it.
Nice variety of exhibits .
Fun, educational and very friendly staff.
Had an amazing time looking at the different exhibits with family, the people there were very nice
Great regional. so many talented artists in our area. Thank you Judy Haynor. for so many wonderful artistic momentsthroughout your career. You have left us with so many gifts.
Loved our visit here with kids. Very bright clean facility with a great selection to look at.
Just a fantastically great small museum venue. The Edward G. Curtis exhibition was out of this world. Beautifully put together.
Nice pics loved the trees
The art and artists are spectacular
Lots of hands on exhibits, excellent for kids. I wish less of their permanent displays were broken.
My wife and I visited here during our anniversary Vacation. What a great museum to visit!
A little jewel!
Nice exhibits and shows
Festival of Trees was just beautiful! Some nice collections, we wandered around for a while. Gorgeous art glass.
A fine art museum showcasing classic American and European work. Featuring contemporary pieces in a variety of forms. ( painting, glass, sculpture, textile, etc.) Changing exhibits throughout the year.Home of Michigans longest running juried exhibition.
Greatly enjoyed our visit this past Thursday. I was blown away with the large variety of different mediums they have in their gallery.
Curtis North American Indian exhibit...Very interesting. Moving photos of our native people, intriguing story of the man who saw the importance of memorializing them.
This is a Big League art museum for a small, growing town. Muskegon Museum of Art brings great art to west Michigan. And I love their gift shop!
Great view from the parking spot.
A gem box of an art museum - small but full of treasures.
Great place for entire family to learn!
The Ed Curtis exhibit is marvellous. The.mma is not afraid to display contorversy. Especially liked the comments of current native American leaders and a few paintings by native Americans that comment on Curtis work
Great Indian photograph display, excellent gift shop, a must-see
Great place for children not to overwhelmed, but have fun and Free
A lovely little gem in southwest Michigan. They had many interesting collections, including an exhibition featuring Michigan artists. Definitely worth a visit if youre passing through.
Very nice collection of art for a small museum. Seeing an Andrew Wyeth in person was the highlight of my visit. Id return.
Interesting art collection
