Wonderful place to discover interesting local history. Legendary story of a homemade Viking boat that sailed to Norway. Big part of Nordic history. Great place to bring kids and adults alike. Viking church open in the Summer. Great place to check out even if your passing through the area. Call ahead and schedule a tour.
We recently moved to Fargo/Moorhead area and decided to check this place out after going to the Red River Market. Needless to say we were very impressed with the museum! The ship was especially cool and the tour of the church was fascinating! We will be bringing our families here when they come to visit us in our new home!
4-stars only because it is not an original, authentic Viking ship and stave church, but this museum offers a very authentically constructed Viking ship and Norweigian stave church. Excellent replicas. The tour of the church was very interesting and the ship is very impressive. The grounds surrounding the museum are nice. I am very glad I stopped here. There is a nice Nordic-themed gift shop as well. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Very worthwhile stop.
We enjoyed the viking ship and the tour inside the church.
Amazing but closed but I could see ship through the back windows, amazing
A True Gem to the FM area. Enjoyable and Educative
Passing through from out of state. Arrived before opening. Building open with staff on hand. Ask if I could see ship to get picture. Of course offered to pay fee. No.
Great experience, make sure you look around outside if you go here, there is a lot of neat stuff out there as well.
Great family place, wild turkeys roaming the park that surrounds it, the quick tour of the replica scandinavian church is good but the viking ship takes the cake. Lots of good historical information in the multilayer museum, worth the 700+ mile ride to see it!
Cool place. I liked the ship and the stave church. The rest was a little boring to me. Its not really worth the $10 entry fee. That pretty steep. $5 would have been reasonable for this exhibit.
Excellent dive into an epic history. Worth a visit.
Interesting. Visit the Stav church in the rear of the museum.
Sadly the museum was closed when we went to visit because of the snow day but the office employees allowed us to view the amazing Viking ship. I liked the history and work that went into making the ship and sailing it. The weapons, helmet and shield was a good bonus.
The Hjemkost Center not only has this replica of a Norwegian boat that was actually sailed to Norway in the 1990s but it also has a Norwegian Stave Church. In addition it has rotating exhibits.
Awesome lessons learned about various Scandinavian heritage and Nordic history
Just married@ The Hjemkomst. Beautiful
Date of Visit: 10/13/2019 - We loved our visit to the Hjemkomst Center. It was on our must see list for our visit to Fargo. Kevin was incredibly knowledgeable and answered all my off the wall questions with grace. Definitely recommend visiting if youre in the area!
Great place, beautiful Viking ship and church
The ship and stave church are both really interesting
Just walked the grounds but loved the replica building. Wild turkeys were walking around as well.
A must visit when you are in the Fargo-Moorhead. The Hjemkomst is an absolute wonder to behold and the Stave Church is a marvel architecture and engineering. The tour of the Stave Church was extremely informative and also entertaining. Our tour guide was delightful. I am glad I finally got to see the marvelous place!
Sorry no pics of Viking ship. Great place to visit with awesome displays. The stave church is beautiful
Nice, tour guide is nice, and you get to pick up some stuff.
The tour of the church is a must do! They also show a film on the journey of the Hjemkomst, but we didnt have a chance to see it. Absolutely beautiful grounds outdoors and indoor galleries showcasing various art.
Love the history and the ship on display. WW1 portion I enjoyed a lot reading stories.
Relevant to Norwegian heritage in our family and interest in Viking ships and culture and Stave Church architecture
A must-see if youre in Fargo-Moorhead. Just across the river from Downtown Fargo, you can get a tour of the Norwegian stave church, and see a replica Viking ship that actually sailed to Norway from the shores of Minnesota!Get a guided tour if you can. They also always have a rotating exhibit about some piece of history from the area.If youre around in June, one of the best festivals in the area is the Midwest Viking Fest, which happens here and is like a mini Renaissance Festival (but for Vikings), and you can try foods from all the Scandinavian nations.
So theres a big tent and inside is a hand made replica of a Viking ship that some other guys sailed to Europe to prove it could be done I suspect. The replica is really something to behold. If you are in the area it is worth a visit. They also have a very comprehensive presentation and museum about the ship.My take away; on their voyage the guys went to the bathroom in five gallon plastic buckets on deck. I imagine just like true Vikings.
Visited during their Scandinavian Festival. Lots of passionate people celebrating their heritage. Loved the fiddlers!
Fun little place to have a wedding.
Coming to Hjemkomst is an every time we are in Fargo/Moorhead must do! The boys were older this year (12,10 and 6) and the inspirational story of Robert Asp building a Viking boat in the middle of the Midwest was not lost on them. All our lives are but a breath, and what we choose to do in that short breath of time, how we chose to live, those people we come in contact with, those dreams we dare to follow, are the ways in which we bring significance to even the short time we are here.Truly inspiring and heartwarming.
Watch video first! Laid back museum. Really neat ship. And church.
Google said it was open but the hours changed. So I was too early and not willing to wait around a couple hours. So Im kinda disappointed.
Very cool building. The boat isnt authentic but is amazing. The story behind it is pretty spectacular. The ww1 gallery is a really great bonus
Lots of great history and beautiful Viking ship and church.
Fantastic experience!
The ship is amazing. A must see when in Moorhead.
Awesome, must see place!
Excellent place to visit!
We stopped to waste time on a road trip but it turned out to be a really interesting museum. Definitely watch the video about the ship, it was worth the time. The church was interesting too. We briefly looked at a few other exhibits but ran out of time before we saw what else they had to offer. Its a neat little museum.
Good place. Worth of a visit.
Tour of the wooden church was neat. The ship is impressive, and we really liked the Prohibition/bootlegging museum exhibit was detailed and engaging. May I suggest offering samples?
Good place to vist, thought $10 was a bit expensive though :/
To most visitors its about the ship. And thats cool enough.Locals also know it as the venue for their Scandinavian, German, Celtic and Pangia festivals. It is not unusual for them host special exhibits and produce well done productions on local subjects. Not being a native to the area I appreciate the hostorical insight.
I got to see the awe inspiring St Johns illuminated Bible exhibit. Beautiful
Beautiful is museum 3 floors gorgeous Viking ship that sailed from here to Norway and a beautiful church replica of one in Norway we really enjoyed this museum
The Hjemkomst ship itself is the prize of the center and quite good to look at and study. The facility has a theater to show the voyage of the ship and they have all sorts of historical displays of the journey like the tools, Captains log, etc. Also, the site has the Hopperstad Stave Church replica. Very beautiful to look at and visiting comes with the initial price of admission. You need to have an employee of the center open the doors of the church for you if you want to look inside it. The staff was only a few people but they were great people and very knowledgeable of the ship and the church. Not much for children to experience but still seeing the ship and church is enough for all kinds.
Food festivals are amazing! Huge selection of food and some interesting activities.
An awesome experience and wonderful staff.
If youre passing through town and looking to kill time, definitely stop here. The Viking ship was interesting and the church is such a unique building.
This is an amazing place showing a beautiful ship and church, really puts me in touch with my history.
Amazing viking ship replica.
Really neat place to visit. Friendly people and cool history.
Always a good time coming here to see the ship and church. The exhibits can be interesting but a bit short.
Had a great time exploring this museum and learning new things..staff was helpful and nice!
This is the most unique place an all of Fargo-Moorhead and the only place I recommend to all visitors.
Great exhibits and events. We love visiting!
Wonderful history and fun for the whole family.
Aww ship! Wouldve been a awesome voyage.
Lots to see and read, not expensive
A gem of the north.
It was definitely worth the stop.
Very interesting and informative
Wonderful
This is a nice place
Can get a view of the ship from the lobby without paying for admission, though, of course better views and more information inside.
The museum is small and a little boring but the Viking ship and replica church are worth the visit!
