The Jewel is a really great intimate addition to the main area. Entrance is off to the left of the main entrance. All concessions can be bought on the Jewel side. The first 3 rows are all on the same level but spaced in a way that you are not looking at the back of someones head. Rows D through handicap (3) are on their own level. Row D seems like the best one for the view. Row A is too close to the screen for me, you have to crane your neck back a bit.The screen once the movie is playing is about 120 inches. The sound is a little lacking as it seems like the speakers do not surround the room.Friendly staff and very attentive.
A lovely vintage theater in downtown Modesto. They recently opened a smaller theater which only seats about 20 people. I prefer the main area but this allows them to screen more films and even catch movies that already are off theaters. The people who run this theater have done a great job in selecting films to show; sometimes even including films that dont get released in main theaters in the whole central valley! This is a great place to go out on a date or even to take yourself out. The decoration and architecture of the theater adds to the enjoyment of the film and overall experience!
Hands down the best part of the state theatre is the snack bar. Their food is standard fare and also includes a salami tray and pizza, but their drink selection is fantastic. They have Italian soda, an espresso machine, and a full bar. The food is typical movie theater prices. I also enjoy the kind employees, the clean facilities, and the nostalgic feel. Ive seen a lot of movies here and I love it every time.
Seats are definitely uncomfortable and no cupholders. But super friendly staff, clean bathrooms and theatre. Snack bar was awesome. Good coffee and good beer selection, cant go wrong there. And movies nobody else shows. Enjoyed our visit overall, will definitely be back.
Beautiful and lovely theater. Nice to reminisce on what theaters once were. The concession stand has wine and handcrafted coffees! The velvet seats and decor are classic and lovely.
Ive been here a number of times before, but this is my first review. This is a great place to see movies not available at the local multi-screen cinemas. We saw Phantom Thread this time which is well acted, but quite intense and layered. There are a lot of treats and several cocktails available at the concessions, too. Pictures are from the Graffiti Parade a few years back.
What a little gem this place is! Two fantastic experiences in the last month with my family. I love that they play the nostalgic movies and Holiday classics! So very lucky to have this as a local institution. Well run, friendly service, clean environment, and a great number of movies to choose from! Highly recommend!
Always love going here. Great atmosphere and always a great line up! Definitely recommend going here!!
Great atmosphere! They had snacks, drinks, and even cocktails. I cant wait to go back.
Brand new addition of Jewel a small intimate space for a handful of people to watch movies in while other events go on in the original space.
Beautiful restored theater. Nice seats. The interior is done well. Its nice that cities are taking pride in their downtown area.
The State Theatre is a real gem in Modesto’s downtown area! It’s an old structure that was restored some years ago and offers a variety of entertainment activities, including movies that may not be shown in other theaters. The food is excellent and includes fresh popcorn, Italian sodas, and wine. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The seats aren’t fancy (no cup holders) but comfortable. And the price of admission for a movie is significantly less than other theaters.
By far and away my favorite movie and concert venue! It is a beautiful theater from 1934, which has been fantastically restored. They have the best concessions in town, very comfortable seats and there are no bad seats to be had.
Very cool renovated theater. Nice experience overall.
They have done a great job preserving this theater.
Awesome retro movies selection.
Love the old fashion feel level seating!
I love this theater. The staff is very nice. Great movies and love the Italian Sodas.
Modesto s best old theater. Occasionally they show questionable films, however.
Love this theater. It gets better every time. Most old theaters get restored then start decaying again. Here I see more improvements every time I go there. Kudos to all the people who put so much effort into this theater!
Always fun. Enjoyed the 1931 version of Dracula.
Great venue for local entertainment. Took my wife here for date night. We had a blast!
Ex element facility for a show, talk, etc... Highly recommend attending an event here.
One if the valleys great old movie houses. Modesto is very lucky to have this restored gem. Everyone should go and support.
Donnie Baker and Bob Zaney were awesome
I love this theater, they play some movies that big movie theaters dont play, lets keep the State Theatre open for more generations to come.
Lovely restored Art Deco 1930s grand Theater! I saw Mary Poppins premier here as a child, now its a great art house Theater & live music venue in Modesto located on J Street, part of the original American Grafiti route in my hometown.
I love The State Theater. Im a proud member. Im looking forward to the 100 year anniversary.
One of Modestos hidden treasures. The whole place is a step back in time to the golden age of cinema. They show independent films, old black and white films, and even some local creations done by students. We are truly lucky to have such a fine establishment still in operation. I highly recommend attending one of their showing.
Great classic place but back parking like most of downtown Modesto
This is a historic theater in downtown Modesto. It is great for special movie screening or a live event. While historic, it is well-maintained to retain its chic style. It is four stars because parking downtown can be difficult. You may have to walk some distance for big events.
Went to see Echo In the Canyon, it was great .Good seating and not to crowed .
Great place to see a concert!! Everyone there is so nice!! Has a great old school vibe!! Small and cozy... not a bad seat in the house. :)
Clean, beautiful and nostalgic! Staff was so friendly and kind! Snack bar prices are great. Loved the cherry Italian Soda!
It was good, I liked how they bring the personal pizza to your seat based on the honor system
This is a very nice theater for being one of the oldest around. Only been here a few times since it only shows artsy movies. My wife and I always enjoy a nice date night here.
Its an older theater, so they have the older seats and consession stands. Keeping with that, they play older movies. All and all its not too bad, but them seats sure are uncomfortable.
Love this theater. Youll see things not made for the masses. Indie films and foreign films to broaden your central valley horizons!
Very cool vintage venue
Loved it for it beinging my first time seeing a piece of history. Looking forward to the next time.
Went and saw My Neighbor Totoro and it was great. The seats were decent, but i will not order the cheese and salami thing again, 4 crackers, 2 pieces of cheese and 5 slices of salami for $6, a bit out there.
This place has great costumer service. I arrive a few minutes late to a movie but they were still willing to serve me. The people are friendly and professional. I enjoy going there to see good classic movies.
Friendly small town feel to this lovingly renovated historic theater. Smiling helpful staff manage the generous concession stand and the offerings of inspiring, often award-winning independent films and events are unlike any other theater. A local treasure!
Love this theater!!! So clean, wonderful staff, and always a great lineup of movies. I cant say anything negative about State Theater
THE STATE THEATER IS THE PLACE TO GO TO ENJOY SO MANY DIFFERENT EVENTS AND THIS IS WHY I LOVE GOING. I HAVE SEEN MUSICAL GUEST, POETRY, MOVIES AND OTHER COMMUNITY EVENTS THAT THE WHOLE CITY CAN BE A PART OF AND ENJOY. I LOVE WHAT THEY HAVE TO OFFER HERE AT THE STATE THEATER.
A great old fashioned one screen theatre that plays harder to find films on release. Friendly staff and great concessions including Alcohol. A great place to sit back and watch a film.
Love coming to this theater. About the only theater near Merced that shows Independent films. Seen many a good movie at this theater. Highly recommend
Good service and great popcorn/snacks. Generally an older crowd but a nice change of pace from Brenden.
The State Theater is a beautifully restored art deco style movie palace built in the 1930s. It has a modern sound system that provides a terrific audio experience whether you are watching an award winning independent film, or one of the many live music experiences that this local powerhouse of entertainment provides.
It was a nice family event . will go back anytime
Good spot to see classic genre movies
Gorgeous art decor theatre
85th Anniversary event! Good times.
Place is beautiful for 85 years old!
I love all the old movies they show and the staff is amazing
Great shows/ concerts
Another great evening at the State Theater With Friends enjoying zasu Pitts
Went to watch a comedy show, had a great time. Theater was nice and cool. Staff was friendly and mens room was clean. Pretty cool for an old theater.
Friendly staff! Great concessions area. Beautiful house area with a lot of character.
Where else can you watch great indie films and throwbacks
Progressive eclectic reprotour of independent & classic films, informative documentaries and scientific symposia.
One of my favorite places in Modesto. Always have a great movie showing. The concessions stand has great options including mixed drinks, beer and wine. Staff is always friendly.
Love this place!! They have so many different events, and different movies being shown there. I have gone to multiple warren miller flilms, seen classic movies like jarrassic Park, informative movies like weed the people, and was fortunate enough to go to the poetry slam! I love their pop corn with real butter! They offer adult beverages, and on busy events they have 2 places you can purchase alcohol from. They have more then enough bathrooms in this place, and there’s always hand lotion in there which is a plus lol. It’s a great place for the community to come together. If I havnt said it enough I really love this place lol.
The State Theatre has been beautifully restored. Projection screen is small so recommend to sit closer to the screen when enjoying a movie.
Absolutely great Ive attended serval events there and love it every time
What a lovely theatre. A throwback to the days when theatres where a showcase to Hollywood. This is large arena and everything from the moment you step inside is about making you the center of the movie experience. They offer food and drink here and the sound quality is better than good. The seats started to get a bit uncomfortable after sitting for and hour and a half but not bad at all. The staff were pleasant and welcoming. A good place to see a movie!
Good venue and seats for live music events and the latest movies.
Nice Art House
Quaint theater. Gives you the old timer feel. Fully restored I loved it.
Great ambience. Only one cinema though, so check the website to see what movie is playing and when. This Theatre also has a stage where comedians and other artists will come to perform. For instance Paula Poundstone was here just last month.
I like this theater because they usually get their hands on some really good movies... Mainly Oscar nominees and classics. Its kept up nicely and has a good snack and beverage offering (last we went there was indigeny blackberry cider on tap). I only wish the lower section had a slightly higher incline so the chance of getting stuck behind a tall person is a lot less likely, but its an old theater, so you cant get everything.
Old time theater, always friendly people.
I always enjoy going to the State Theater for movies and concerts.
Very impressed with the Nostalgia of the presentation of the movie that we watch and the orator presented raffle and my son won. Wish the seats were a little more comfortable though people are great
Great atmosphere and friendly people good popcorn and drinks I will be back
Friendly staff, independent movies
Great experience for my first time visting. Very enjoyable.
Love The State Theatre. Always an excellent experience
Beautiful theater, 83 years old. Comfortable seats. Wine, cheese, pizza and other goodies. A nice experience.
Had our Nursing Pinning Ceremony there. Beautiful setting. Staff was amazing, friendly and very professional. A wonderful experience.
Great place for movies and small concerts they also serve beer and wine if you want that
Went for a comedy show where you selected your seats when you went online. That meant nothing to State Theater, they allowed it to be a free for all in the VIP section. Older gentleman whom had been drinking starts yelling at my husband that we were in his seats. My husband calmly tried telling him the usher asked us to move to accommodate 4 people who were standing. We agreed even though we were in the seats I purchased. Security if you can call Billy that just stood behind my husband and did ABSOLUTELY nothing to de escalate the situation. First and last time we go.
We r lucky to have State Theatre so as not to have to drive to Sac or SF Bay Area for films the other 3 movie theaters dont show (they all 3 show same superhero films, etc). With quality food and historical ambience!!
Its charming old time theatre atmosphere. I heard a great lecture on propulsion. I saw an excellent Star Trek movie. I got a free pair of ear buds.
Beautiful historical building, well modernized film equipment
The educational programs there have been fantastic. Thank you State Theater for partnering with our schools to provide students with these experiences.
Great old school theater with adult beverages and food sold
Large theater. No crowds. Clean. Friendly staff. Movies are not your Hollywood generic remakes. However, I would prefer more movie time options per day.
Love the throw back movies. Best popcorn in town
Great local businesses like this are the institution Modesto is built on!!!!!
Love the place
The State theater is my favorite place for any movie. Soy free popcorn and unusually delightful tea. This is also where I got to meet Ted Keeley,a dream since childhood
Lots of fun coming back to a theater I went to 50 years ago. Thank you John Griswold for bringing it back to us!
