Hiked with my son just before Thanksgiving day. Love it! The views here are excellent: bay view - you can see most of north bay, some part of San Francisco, even Oakland, ocean view - you can see the Pacific ocean, mountain view - you can see mounts around, especially the Muir Woods and its red wood trees. We got the east peak and staying there on a rock for a while, enjoying the sunshine and breezy winds. There is a falling tree on our trail, but you can jumping around it. Near the east peak, there is a chained road, we didnt enter there, but somehow we have to exit from there when exit from the peak.
Quite simply one of the most stunningly beautiful, rugged, and peaceful places I have been. We camped at Steep Ravine Environmental Site 2 for almost a week (Monday to Saturday) and had the most amazing time. Great location to stay to enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, easy and quick access to the Steep Ravine and Dispea Trails that connect to many hikes in Muir Woods, a small beach below the cabins, and a bit of isolation. Site 2 is directly next to Site 3 so not as private as some of the other sites, but with some of the best views, a tree for afternoon shade, and great wind protection. Most other sites were empty for most of our stay, but all were filled on Friday night. The sites are hike in, a very short +/- 0.1 mile walk. Wheelbarrows are available to cart your gear in, though they seemed to be a commodity on Friday night! Reservations are available 6 months in advance at 8am PST and they go fast! Make sure you have a good internet connection for the booking. If you ever have the opportunity to stay here, take it!!!Beware poison oak. Wash well with dish soap if you think you have been affected by it. It will remove the poisonous oils and help keep it from spreading.
Extremely Large, Beautiful, High, & some hiking spots are Very Narrow Paths Along High Cliffs. Many choices of Mother Nature to enjoy! Well cared for.
One of the best in Bay Area. Dipsea, steep ravine, Matt Davis loop is 7.4 miles moderate . It have the best view of ocean . Heavily trafficked hike so make sure to reach there early, else parking is hard. There is a parking fee of 8$, you can put it in the envelope provided. Clean restroom in the starting of the trail. Most of the time it is foggy even in the summer time, expect to stay little longer to get the clear view.
Beautiful area and a will run state park
Nice park with nice amenities. Access to some great hiking trails with amazing views. Campsites are a little tight but in great condition. Our night there was disrupted by a group who stayed up all night talking and laughing loudly. Extremely selfish and inconsiderate.
Nice tracks beautiful views of the bay and more
Best view for the sunset i know and experienced in bay area. Always check to make sure they are open during high fire danger season and bring a good camera. A must if visiting from outside the area.
Wonderful place to have dinner while sunset! Be careful and responsible on the road getting down after sunset with fog. Summer is the best time to see the fog.
We are just so lucky to be close to this gorgeousness. Dont miss out.
This has to be with out a doubt the best place to hike in the Bay Area, I would also go as far to say the best place to hike in California. Marin County is beautiful, case in point here, if you want to hike, and enjoy the outdoors, its a no brainer to come here.
Amazing view and good time to spend with family. But their is a sign that says no dogs but their we dogs on the ocean. We brought a dog but he sat in the chair the whole time. It is a down side wish they aloud dogs.
Went through Muir woods actually. Might have crossed over at some point during the hike. Loved it!!
Gorgeous hike! Clearly marked trails. Did the Mt Davis and Steep Ravine hike.
Beautiful hiking on the Bay Areas highest peak. Im from Colorado and this terrain is up there with the 14ers. Incredible views of the city and miles of Redwoods.
Cool area, lots of little campgrounds around if thats your thing. I think most of them only charge about $4 a night. Unfortunately they dont have any free camping, and dont take kindly to just setting up in the woods. Be sure to hit up Meir woods if you visit.
This place is magical. The Dipsea Trail from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach is gorgeous. If you hook a right just before One Tree Hill you can get to Pan Toll Campground and from there up to the West Point Inn and the East Peak. From there you can complete the loop back into Mill Valley by back tracking to West Point Inn and taking the Old Railroad Grade road/trail all the way down into town. Breath taking scenery and views, wild life galore, cant recommend tromping around here enough.
Its a beautiful drive either on the panoramic or highway 1. A lot of beautiful trails worth hiking!
Amazing driving experience. Wether youre going just for fun or to take photos, you wont be disappointed :)
My TOP FIND 30 minutes from San Francisco! Great for a day of trek for people all ages. Theres no water or restaurant in the park so make sure to get water as you do the trek on a sunny day. The views are superbly rewarding. This is where you can see the FOG rolling into San Francisco from the ocean.
An amazing place! Beautiful views and well maintained trails. Definitely a must visit if you are even remotely close. Coming from the Rockies, Im always impressed by the size of the trees.
Mount tamalpais state park is a world-class recreation area. Hiking trails galore. And the view from the mountain, and from the trails, is amazing.
I had a great time hiking and looking for mushrooms here. One of the best places for a date day for the nature enthused couple.
We hiked up from Pan Toll station to the peak. It was a moderate difficulty hike with gorgeous views of the bay area along the way.
A must do in Marin. Drive or ride to the top of My. Tam for views is SF, the bay, Stinson Beach, Mill Valley and more.
Easy drive and great views.
If you love narrow trail and endure 4 + hours of loose/gain 2000ft., it is absolutely the one you should try. Lovely, variety scenic hike..
What a nice place to visit. We came early Sunday morning and the crowds were small, but did get busier later in the day. Magnificent views. So glad we visited and hiked around for a while
Amazing ! And breathtaking sunset view. Followed by a roller coaster drive on route 1. You wont be able to get to beach or touch the water. Most of the time its so foggy and the visibility is so less that you wont even see the ocean. It still looks fantastic in blury weather.
Unbelievable awesome site. The drive up and downhill is a experiance for itself. The few to the bay, the pacific and the hills is stunning. Plan to stay the most part of the day and you will have a good time.
Great place to hike and do other outdoor activities. The trails seem to be well-maintained and is well-marked; we didnt have any issues. You can set your own hike/bike difficulty rating with the many different trail options and elevation levels. You are sure to encounter some wildlife on your trip. Youll also get some pretty amazing views. Unfortunately, we visited when there were some wildfires in the area just a couple of hours away which you will notice from the smokiness and red glare in the attached photos. One last note: If youre afraid of heights, some of the trails along the edge of the mountain might be extra challenging.
I am a life-long, Bay Area resident and am very fortunate to have experienced many other parts of the world. No other views offer such magnificent and dramatic views of pristine nature, (Muir Woods), and urban landscape, (San Francisco skyline and all the bridges), juxtaposed in such a beautiful and harmonious accord.Between Muir Beach and Muir Woods is Frank Valley Road. About 2 miles or so below Muir Woods parking, you can park for free on the side of the road. About 1 mile from there towards Muir Woods, Frank Valley Road is intersected by the Deer Park Fire Road. This is where I begin my bike ride up Mt. Tamalpias. This is also how to gain free entrance into Muir Woods National Monument. However, you MUST be in good enough shape to hike straight uphill for 2 full miles where it intersects the Ben Johson trail, (foot traffic only). The Ben Johnson trail will lead you down the other side of the ridge into Muir Woods proper. Hiking out through the park entrance will mean walking 2 miles down Frank Valley Road back to your car (slightly downhill) to complete the loop. Worth it.If you like to Mountain Bike, Mt. Tamalpias is literally where the sport was invented. This is the best place in the bay area to mountain bike, period. Reason #1: The trails hold up in all weather. Anywhere else around the bay, a few drops of rain and the trails turn to mud and it could be 3 days after it stops before theyre rideable. I have bicycled up Deer Park Fire Road, to Old Stage Road, past West Point Inn, and up Railroad Grade to Pantoll Road in a violent rainstorm. No problem....a little scary, because branches were falling from hundreds of feet in the air, but the mostly rocky terrain, especially toward the top, really held up spectacularly. Reason #2: Breathtaking views. Toward the top of Deer Park Fire Road, the trail ascends into the same old growth forest that is contained within the Muir Woods park boundary. These trees show the scars from the same fire that left the Muir Woods similarly scarred. In this part of the forest, there is nothing restricting the public from playing in and around the burned-out, hollow stumps. Above the old growth forest the trails will offer some of the most spectacular panoramic views on the planet. Reason #3: The air. Cant describe it. Go there. Breathe.
This is the most incredible hidden gem Ive ever come across. Ive been to some pretty amazing places in my life and this place here is now in my top 3....... The view and the feeling of being on top of the world is magical and I suggest getting there for sunset !!!
What an amazing landscape just a few minutes outside of SF. I ran a 50k trail race and enjoyed every minute.
Mount Tam state park is beautiful! A great place to hike or just sit and meditate while you check out the beautiful Scenic views of the Bay Area!
Such a beautiful park! I loved the view from the top.
Beautiful spot above the cloud with breathtaking views of the foggy city on one side and endless mountain ridges on the other. The drive up was really fun as well!
Beautiful and mysterious place! One of the Best State Park to hike and also it is also close to San Francisco!
We took the Matt Davis trail via bootjack. Its a really nice trail. It is a good mix of strenous streches to flat walk. Last quarter of the hike was basically wooden stairs or stone stairs. The views were great thought you need to be patient for cloudd to clear out for few seconds. There was a bit of drizzle which made the hike fun.Overall i would recommend this place if you are looking for a moderate hike.
This place, where do I start. It was so so amazingly awesome! We hiked the entire thing (hence the Fitbit screenshot) up and down and the views were just breathtaking. We were so high up you could see everything. Completely worth the hike and sweat.
Its really awesome place to visit on sunset time. It will be à memorable scenic view, which u will not forget.
Beautiful views from the mountain tops down to the beach. Trails are in great shape. Camping is affordable and all the sites were in good condition. Great spot to bring the family, even the dogs. Highly recommend exploring this area.
Loved it. Great park. Fantastic views if you make it to the top If you arrive early in the morning parking is okay. 8 USD. Bring cash in case you are there before the ranger and have to fix self payment. The hikes are a variety of difficulties. Something for everyone.
Very nice park, so close to San Francisco. The views are great, you can go through nice forest, get down to beaches, see the views of the city. There are many beautiful hills and plains. I recommend coming here.We took the Matt Davis trail down to Stinson beach, and came back on the Dipsea trail and Steep Ravine.
Wonderful views, lots of trails to choose from, you can make your hike as long Or as short as you wish, or just go to parking lot near the top and enjoy.
Great Forrest....lots to enjoy and you can spend a lifetime exploring.
Amazing view of Marin County and a very picturesque drive!
This is one of the most beautiful state parks Ive been to. Theres plenty of trails for all skill ranges. It has everything; theres ocean, forest, waterfalls, manzanita, and mountains. I highly recommend going after a rainfall if youre not afraid of a little mud because it is spectacular! Also theres places for parking near the trailheads that dont cost anything, a couple of which are free back ways to get into Muir Woods.
One of the best trails around Bay Area, carry fluids.
One of the best State parks in the USA right in the Bay Area. So much nature to explore, try to grab those campsite or better yet the Steep Ravine cabins when you can. (Hint - Midweek) These are the reasons people want to live in The Bay.
Its such a gift to have an area as beautiful at Mt. Tam right in our backyard. I have been coming to hike this park for the better part of 12 years now, ever since I started spending more time outdoors. Started with the Rock Springs hike to Cataract Falls and eventually branched out to other hikes. There are so many different environments to choose from you really cant go wrong, from rolling exposed hillsides to redwood forest, You can pretty much experience any kind of nature in Mt. Tam.We visited this weekend so I can bring my girlfriend up the Steep Ravine trail and back down Dipsea. Its such a beautiful and challenging hike. It takes you all the way up to the Pantoll campground along a gorgeous creek. Definitely a highly recommended hike. Its steep and hard for worth it.Things get super busy on any trail after 11am so if you are like me who enjoys quiet, make sure to get here early so you can finish your hike as the rest of the world is getting theirs started. Even if you get here during peak hours, its still a great choice for a day time activity.
Just past Muir Woods... Much less trafficked. Many hikes and views are great on a clear sunny day!
The trail is fun, but very few signs to know where to go. People who hikes there are nice! A bit difficult when it comes the rocky road.
Get ready for a big day out! Lots of trails and these are not short easy trails. And yes, this is a mountain, be ready to hike up and down hills. And plan to start early and it gets crowded the later it gets.
This is a great place to visit. The park is actually huge and has everything from beaches to sea cliffs to forests of towering trees to gorgeous panoramic views of the bay.
On the day the rain stops within the week, ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you to JURASSIC PARK. *Theme plays* The humid but crisp air, the ferns that overgrow beneath the forest floor, the staggering trees that remained dormant for centuries, this park awakes when the sun sets in the blanket of fog. All the nature here performs to the fares, I know you too will truly enjoy the park. Now please, gaze upon the photographs.
Nice Park. The Bay Area has very nice parks and views
There is not much view of the peak itself, except for this very little but beautify bird. But from the peak you could see quite far of the whole area.
Dipsea trail and Matt Davis trail loop is wonderful. One of the best hikes in the area. 1400-1500 ft elevation gain.
Amazing natural beauty, but concerning due to the large crowds. We humans are creatures of habit, addicts by nature, accustomed to remain the same. It can be said that an individual has the capacity to change their behavior, but will they? Some have, most not. We choose to believe what is based on convenience, our egos desire, what we want vs what is needed. What have we learned? what have we changed? You cannot truly change anyones behavior, this, beliefs, only they can. So the question is what will you choose to do based on your beliefs, principles and values? And what is it that you value? It is a rare thing these days to encounter someone who says excuse me, thank you, hello. Who simply displays the capacity to use words to Express? We all possess capacity, potential, the gift of creation. What will you choose to create?
We hiked from Stinson Beach to top of mt Tamalpais then crossed the road come down the othwr side.the terain was redwoods and stairs and ladder on one side medows with a view of San Francisco and Ferlons on the other.
Perfect day for hiking and being out training
Gorgeous views of SF and the Bay. Beautiful. Serpentine peak. Overall, very relaxing with various trails that are easy to walk with varying inclines. Great for a picnic or chill afternoon. Not very crowded with Stinson beach down below!
Great mountain for outdoor activities like hiking and biking
Long, winding roads to get up there. But the views from the top make it worth the effort!
We walked the Matt Davis trail halfway through. It was a beautiful and green steep hill with many stairs. We reached an open place with dried grass at the end. There are small bridges, a creek, a great scenery of the ocean and a huge rock called table rock on our way. You might also notice fragrant herbs such as peppermint. When we trekked, it was very foggy until the late afternoon. We saw a mystical light shaft when the fog was clearing. The sunset was very beautiful. It was also nice that we could trek listening to the waves.
I always recommend this place to as many people as I can. It is without a doubt one of my favorite places ever and its even more beautiful when its full of fog and clouds and they make these mesmerizing fog waves rolling down the hills and through the pines.
Lots of hiking trails. Some in the woods, some overlooking the shore and others going down to the beach and/or tide pools. Most trails have long uphill and downhill portions.
A great place to take the family. Be careful around the edges. Bring plenty of water and a hiking stick.
From mountain peaks, pancake inns, waterfalls, alpine-esque lakes, redwood groves, to ocean beaches this park spans and seamlessly bounds Muir Woods. pictures are from the Sierra and Fern creek trails.
Love hiking up Tam. A good workout and fantastic views await.
Nice look at the nature all over!
Relatively Nice short hike (about 1 to 2 hrs) and you will be treated to a great view at the top.
A beautiful place and a short but challenging hike. Youll find yourself climbing over rocks to make your way to the top. Its not the most difficult, and is quite fun. Dogs are allowed, but be sure to keep them leashed! The paths are sometimes narrow and rocky, and it would be a bad place to take a stumble due to a large dog barreling through. Most people should be able to make it to the top relatively easy though. And youll be rewarded with a heavenly view of Marin!
Dont miss this state park! Great views!
Lovely place to hike
Amazingly lush trail, up and back. This place deserves its fame!
This was first time hear. We went the ranger stations who let us know what trails to walk and take pics. We walk about a 3 miles trail it was worth it. This is a big state parks so much to see. ..
Beautiful view.. Quite easy to get to the top. Get ur navigation before hand as there may not be network.. watch out for wind speed..
Mt Tam State Park is one of my favorite places to hike.I recommend to be in the park early in the morning to avoid the crowd and to find parking.
Another be beautiful park close to San Francisco. Its hard to believe that a short drive and you can see scenery this beautiful.
One of my favorite places to go for a drive, bike ride or hike. The top of the mountain offers 360 views of the Bay Area and San Francisco with its circular walk around pic. The mountain is also home to many natural beauties like waterfalls, dense forests and open rolling landscape. You can also hike down to Stinson beach from here and on foggy days in San Francisco you can usually go up the mountain and rise above the fog with a vastly warmer climate to welcome you as well.
The fog and wind were a cool experience.
Great trails and stunning vistas
Its a great place except do NOT go on the weekend. There are so many people and theyre super pushy when you are trying to navigate the steep, windy roads while trying to avoid hitting bicyclist and hikers.Be very careful getting to the park. Google will not take you directly into the park so follow the signs there or ask locals for directions.
Good for a cheeky hike. Will puff you out real quick
Beautiful! People need to remember their trash and not liter though!!
Beautiful vistas of the Pacific coast.
Wide variety of trails that can take you from Stinson Beach all the way to the top of Mt Tam. Single track trails as well a service roads, the park offers trail for everyone from children to seasoned hikers. Steep Ravine is one of the most beautiful trails I’ve ever been on, and a lot of fun. Dogs aren’t permitted in the state park, with the exception of service dogs. However, there is a wooden ladder at one point on Steep Ravine trail and getting a dog up/down the ladder is quite the feat. Plan ahead is you’re bringing a service dog.
Moderate level hike. Would recommend starting from Stinson Beach and then reaching Mt. Tamalpais and back.
One of the most beautiful places in one of the most beautiful counties in the US.
Paradise!! You can bike here, camp here. Tons of hiking trails. The park is open from 7 am to sunset. Its my weekend goto place.
Beautiful park with moderate to challenging hikes. Come early you’ll find plenty of parking $8 cash. Nice bathrooms. Great views and a ton of trails to take. We hiked down to Muir Woods And came back up, mostly shaded. There is camping sites too.
The place for hiking in Bay Area. Forest and ocean air will fill you up with energy.
Great place for easy to moderate trails. Moderate coastal weather. Very scenic.
Nice state park to hike.
A hike to see the Bay area...the sunsets are beautiful
