The Heron Rookery is a natural gem located in the middle of farm country in northern Indiana. It is part of the Indiana Dunes National Park. Although the herons moved on to other locations, it is still a beautiful three mile hike overlooking the Calumet River. It is a well marked trail and is pretty in any season. The place remains awesome for bird watching.

Everyone is able to enjoy a nice stroll through the woods here. The path is accessible to strollers and easily walked by small children. Quiet time and a good place to get out there.

Tried hiking this trail over the weekend. Even after applying bug spray, there were a ton of small biting flies (midges I believe) that were a constant harassment to what looked like an excellent trail. The further we went on the trail, the more flies that followed us. We eventually had to turn around because they were so incessant.

Great quick.hike, suitable for dogs of all sizes and kids. Single track and dirt the whole way, a few small ups/downs, and pretty walk along creek bed.

FYI the Herons no longer nest here (maybe again one day). Nice trail along a creek and in spring, carpets of ephemerals.

The Heron Rookery is a nature preserve along the East Arm Little Calumet River. Parking at both ends of the trail. Its basically a 1.5 mile one-way trail along the river. Interesting hike but RUGGED. Several places where you could fall 15-20 feet off the trail and into the river. This is not a leisurely family hike. Path is very narrow, in some places only about a foot wide. Bugs are very bad even with spray, but that is to be expected by the river.A good challenging trail. I recommend it to the adventurous.
