Very interesting! We wandered for about two hours and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes history.
A beautiful detailed mansion. Wood work, marble, and gorgeous doorways. Really cool bathrooms and interesting history about the Barker family. If you dig history, achitecture, design, and decor, a must see! Self tours and scheduled tours.
Great tour! Lots very informative and we could tour most of the mansion.
Historical and your ability to learn about how things were so much different then now days. How they used to do things back then and how much we have evolved.
Great venue for a small outdoor wedding. Staff was beyond excellent
Amezing place!!! Great history lesson and Tour guides were extremely knowledgeable.
Not able to take photos i side but it was just beautiful.
Very Cool beautiful home! Perfect activity especially if its raining like it was the day we went.
Very impressive! Quite the history of people WAY above my pay grade!
Fun free Halloween family event!!
Person giving tour was very informative and interesting
It was wonderful! The staff was very friendly and informative. The Christmas trees were beautiful. The organist was great! Overall, it was a delightful way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
We held our youngest daughters 1st birthday party at Barker Mansion, in the parlor room, and it was the most beautiful/unique birthday experience weve ever had. Austin, our personal tour guide, was fabulous. The tour portion of the party was fun for the adults, we really loved it! This place is gorgeous! Amanda went above and beyond to answer all of our questions, and made the party run absolutely perfect. I would highly suggest planning an event (or even a casual visit) to Barker Mansion. The staff and building are both incredible, and they are passionate about the home and its visitors! :) Thank you to everyone who gave us the perfect day!
Very interesting tour of a beautiful mansion
Gorgeous inside. Lovely woodworking and trim throughout. Went to a fantastic wedding ceremony in the outside garden.
My sons second grade class trip was fantastic. Every room had a beautiful Christmas tree and tour guides were extremely knowledgeable.
I love history. Beautiful house, took you back in time
Ive lived near the mansion all my life and never known a small fraction of the history. The tour was amazing. Ill need to take it several times to remember just part of it. The tour guide knew everything about the mansion and the grounds. It was a long tour with intricate details that made you understand the life of the opulent at the time. The little intricacies, like the hidden buttons to summon the servants were fascinating. The servants rooms were smaller than jail cells . Light fixtures had both gas and electric service. The Barkers also engaged in philanthropy and built many of the historic landmarks in Michigan City. The mansion also hosts weddings and special events.I took a couple photos before we were told photography was not allowed, so only a couple pics of the tour, sorry. .Dont forget to like reviews and photos you like. This helps the reviewer.
Great place
Super nice Mansion in Michigan City. You can tour it with a guide or on your own. Beautifully restored rooms and artifacts. Allow at least 40 mins inside. Enjoy!
The guided tour is definitely worth it. TJs historical knowledge was very impressive. Its a cool, interesting place to check out in the summer. Very pretty!
Lovely house to tour. Enjoyed lighted Christmas trees and decor.
As a frequent volunteer, I am a bit biased, but this is a lovely place for tourists and locals alike to go and learn about Michigan City’s colorful history. The tour guides are very friendly and knowledgeable, and the director is incredibly organized. TJ gives the most information packed tours, as he is currently writing a book on the history of the barker family. Bailey has a lot of quirky facts about the building. Jackie, although leaving soon, is very thorough and detailed. Shoutout to Emily and Ursula too :)
If you enjoy seeing architecture from the mid to late 1800s, this is a must-see. Alot of early train building history in the experience.
Beautiful rooms and a top notch guide.
Very nice place. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Cool historical tour. Ask lots of questions.
Great example of early 20th century money in America. At one time the Barker family was thought to be one of the wealthiest families in the US. Much of the ornate carvings were done in place. Dont forget to visit the basement and check out the good example of intact vintage heating equipment.
Hidden treasures. Great history lesson.
An interesting piece of history at a very reasonable price
Best time ever! Love the volunteers
The mansion is amazing and the docents knowledgeable and friendly.
Great place. Really cool historic building with great tours and s great staff
I love the fill of that era so beautiful magical pretending to play someone one in the castle what a great day
Everything about this place is beautiful. I just wish they could draw the drapes–many of the curtains were closed and it made the place feel dark and dreary, but it is necessary to keep the old furnishings looking nice. The yard is GORGEOUS, especially on sunny days. It is very well kept. Definitely recommend for weddings. I was there catering for one. It has a very long, very nice kitchen that was recently refurbished. There is lots of space to work in the kitchen and easy access to essential tools.
Me and my wife decided on a whim to do the blackout tour while we were in Michigan City for our honeymoon. Was a lot of fun, and the guides were super friendly. Definitely plan on doing a tour with the lights on soon!
Excellently run place. Extremely friendly staff
This mansion is stunning, both inside and out. The Architecture is gorgeous, and I kept finding new things to draw my eye the more I looked around the building. The house is a masterpiece. The thing that truly makes it special though is that so many of the furnishings are original! Walking around the house and grounds really is like stepping back in time. The guided tour starts with a short video about the Barkers and their influence on Michigan City (the video is in the basement). Then you walk back up to the main floor, and up the beautifully carved wood staircase to the next floor (there is quite a bit of walking up and down stairs and the main entrance is not wheelchair accessible, so keep that in mind when planning a visit here). Our guide was very informative. He expanded upon the Barkers history that we had learned in the video while pointing out items of particular interest as we walked along. It was interesting to learn who had occupied the rooms and see some of their personal effects. I also enjoyed seeing photos of how the rooms looked when the Barkers lived in the house and then looking around to see the same furnishings in front of me looking as they did in the pictures. I wish I could have taken some of my own photos inside, but they have a policy against that. After the tour, be sure to step out the back door and look around the landscaped gardens. There is a fountain, statues, and places to sit. The tour guide was very patient about waiting to lock up until we had finished exploring the grounds and taken copious amounts of photos. He also was very kind to answer some of our questions about the house and the family before we left. We had a wonderful time, and I hope we can return some day for another tour!Additional Notes: There is street parking around the mansion. We parked on the street between the mansion and the Top Dog restaurant (which is a good place to grab a quick bite before the tour). I recommend calling the museum ahead of time to be sure that they are open and doing tours on the day you want to visit. Also, I tried to use Google Maps to navigate to the museum from Beverly Shores and it kept having me drive in a big square a couple blocks from the museum. I cant remember if it finally directed us there, or if we found it ourselves. It might be a good idea to look at a map before you leave, just in case this happens to you.
Went there yesterday for Valentines Day. What a wonderful experience! Our guide was so knowledgeable about the Barkers and their relationship to Michigan City. You could see his enthusiasm and love for his job. There was plenty of time to ask questions and learn about the house and its features. So glad to have had this opportunity to learn about this treasure in Michigan City, IN.
I went to a Behind the Scenes tour of the mansion. First of all, it is a really cool place with a rich history tied very well with the history of Michigan City. Secondly, it was very beholding to the eye and a great way to spend an evening. Also, the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about more than just the tour information. All in all it is my favorite place in Michigan City.
Tour guide was extremely knowledgable.
My husband and I had our wedding here in 2012. It was great for the price: garden wedding, intimate, beautiful, rooms to get dressed and ready. Very peaceful and enjoyable.
Glorious historic building! A must see for anyone coming to the area.
The mansion is a beautiful place. I would check before the tour leaves to see how knowledgeable the guide is. We just happened to have a guide that was in fact, and events coordinator. She even admitted she wasn’t as knowledgeable about the mansion as her counterpart manning the desk was . She was unable to answer specific questions about the family and the structure that left us very unsatisfied. Her counterpart was busy when the tour was over so we never got the answers to our question. Saying she was less than enthusiastic about having to lead a tour is an understatement.
Amazing dive into some old architecture! We had find exploring the house and reading all the history facts posted in each room.
Beautiful historical home! Most of the items in the home are original. We did self tour, the museum provides a guide which is a little like a scavenger hunt, highlighting certain objects. These help to tell the story of the home. No photography is allowed in the home. At the end of the tour the staff member offered us a free full color 32 page book. It is their way of making up for the no pictures rule. There is a fee to tour the home but it is minimal.
Very cool place! Definitely recommend the guided tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and the mansion.
One of the best house tours in the world. Excellently curated.
Beautiful. Docents very informative.
Beautiful Mansion and great place to hold meetings and dinners. Jessica and Amanda are awesome. The meaning behind the Barker Mansion is something to explore, --what a great family. If you are looking to find a meeting place, check out the Barker Mansion. Lynn and Diane, Encoré Event Planning.
The Barker Mansion is a landmark of Michigan City with a rich history. Visiting is must for anyone. The staff alone are fun and engaging bring you into the past of the house.
Gorgeous decor, lovely house.
Attended a meeting here this evening. Lots of interesting history regarding the Barker family and the Pullman train cars manufacture...
Beautiful home!! The woodwork was amazing!
Was here for a bridal shower. Very beautiful. The tour guide was very polite and knowledgeable.
Had a great time with my family, even my 6 year old enjoyed it.
Beautiful historic mansion. They have tour guides or self guided tours. Once a month or so they have black out tours where you get to see everything behind the scenes in the mansion.
This place is a really cool place to visit. Put this on your list of things to do.
So much history. This was where my parents got married. Great to see it.
Great little piece of history smack dab in the middle of Michigan City! Fascinating, beautiful gardens.
The docents were great very informative, a lot of history in this mansion and town
This mansion is absolutely amazing, everyone should see it at least once !!!!
The mansion is absolutely beautiful. However, if you are hosting an event there in the summer and they tell you that there is A/C in the building it is only on the 3rd floor. My aunt hosted my bridal shower there yesterday and we really wanted to have it outside in the garden. However, since the weather was going to be in the 90s we decided to have it inside for the comfort of the guests and a couple of my aunts have breathing problems so the heat outside was going to be an issue. My poor guests were sweating to death and it was probably cooler outside with the breeze. We were so disappointed since we will only be able to have ONE bridal shower. This isnt something that we can do over again. So disappointing and embarrassing.
Amazing historical mansion with original furnishings.
Interesting place to look back in time. How the wealthy people lived and how they influence on how our towns look.
Behind the scenes tour is great. Highly recommended a visit to this historical home.
Amezing place, and great people of the mansion.
This place is very cool with most of the original items still in the house. Tour take about an hour. Informative.
Beautiful peaceful place to enjoy the barker mansion property
