We did not know that Mud Island Bridge was closed down. It was a total disappointment. We saw other people there like us, who were also trying to figure out that it was temporarily closed. This place has NO bathrooms.Elevator to the top still works but there is nothing opened, no employees, NOTHING except the buildings themselves, the display on the ground (long walk but super interesting!) and the view of the Mississippi river. The bridge was still opened to pedestrians (although we did not walk it so it might not be..?) The view from the top was a lovely treat.Parts of the rooftops are caving in. Be prepared to explore at your own risk.

This museum is well worth stopping for, we spent about 3 hours in here. The exhibits start from the Prehistoric age and run through the rivers glory years to the Civil War, to modern times. They have a Rivier model outside showing where the river starts and how it has it tributaries and where it dumps into the Gulf of Mexico. The only problem is the exterior of the building, it does seem a bit run down. We went before Memorial Day so the gift shop was closed and the cafe was being renovated, they do have an elevator for the disabled, HCA restrooms and water fountains. We were told that the other shops were scheduled to open a few weeks after we went there so hopefully others can enjoy this place also.

This place has the potential to do so well but unfortunately it’s just neglected. And for a city that needs to boost its tourism and needs to invest in itself it’s just really sad to see something so nice be so forgotten. And yet I still go rather often because the entire park offers spectacular views of downtown. When the city renovates it (I’m assuming eventually), along with some investment into downtown, this will be the spot. It’s a nice museum but it’s dilapidated.

This is a really cool museum that has an awesome scale replica of the Mississippi River that you can walk through and read about. Great for kids too since it’s basically a giant water feature with cool information. Add in the fact that it’s right on the Mississippi and you get some scenic views.

First looks can be deceiving from the parking lot it looks pretty worn down, but this is a really cool place. Beautiful view of the Mississippi river. Great museum its pretty large, could spend a few hours looking/reading. They have a miniature scale mississippi river in which kids were playing. It was really hot (101) so being able to come in and out of the air condition was good, and we cooled off with some ice cream from the cafe. All the staff we encountered were very friendly. If you enjoy history, and beautiful sights I recommend visiting.

This museum seems innocuous, and the initial room seems somewhat dry, but it gets so much better! Walk-through replicas of steam and armoured boats and interactive displays really bring the history of the area to life. Shame the cafe and shop are closed during off season, but still well worth a visit

Underrated area of Memphis. Beautiful museum that has a great summary of knowledge for anyone visiting from out-of-town that wants to brush up on the history of the area. Access to it via the tram or overhead walkway offers some great views. The massive model they have of the Mississippi River is also great to see.

This was a great place when I was a kid but there is not a lot of water in the river and children are supposed to be able to play in it. They also need a filtering system.

Absolutely fantastic, kid or no kid. However, with a kid it was extra special experience. Walking the scale size river from headwaters to gulf was great, and the water fun at the gulf end was great on a hot day. Good educational e patience from start to finish. Interesting way to pay for parking. Never seen it before. Perhaps the future?

Totally enjoyed this museum on Mud Island. In addition to maritime history, theres a bit of music history, too. We also enjoyed the promenade which features a scale replica of the river with flowing water and markers along the way with riverside city maps right in the ground. Flows into a scale sized Gulf of Mexico adjacent to the amphitheatre.

Great place to bring the kids for a small day trip. Inside the museum there are many exhibits on life on the river, from early settlers to the birth of the blues and rock and roll. Or kids especially love the full scale steamboat and civil war battle ship exhibit.Outside the museum, and free to visit, is a model of the complete Mississippi River system, with running water that you can wade in.

I thought that the museum was well run but it think that it should close at 8 instead of 6. The exhibits were very informative and interesting to view. The outdoor model of the Mississippi River was very awesome and good. There are excellent and awesome views of the boat traffic going up and down the mighty Mississippi River. Two thumbs up indeed. :)

The outside park looked like it could be taken care of better. The miniture scale Mississippi could be filled to the correct water level and the wooded play ark is full of hornets and needs removed before children get hurt. The museum itself was great, lots of history and you could spend hours in there. Well worth the price in my opinion.Rating would be higher if park was improved.

Had no idea the museum is closed! After making the almost mile trek accross the footbridge, we found an eery, vacant, run down place reminiscent of an apocalypse! The city needs to get their act to get their act together on this! First, notify Google that the museum and restaurant is closed! Next, figure out a way to revive this asset! GET IT TOGETHER, MEMPHIS!!!

A must-see Museum and Riverwalk. The walk is more enjoyable than the museum but if you have time and the money then definitely take a look at the Museum. The Riverwalk is a scale model representation of the entire Mississippi River including all the towns and cities that it interacts with along the way. This is a great opportunity to teach your children and others about the Mississippi River and the great history involved with all of its progression.
