I absolutely loved this place. It is an excellent place for a date. My sweetheart and I went on Wednesday because it was free and enjoyed looking at the artwork. Unlike many art museums, the Brooks Art Museum allows photography, so long as you use no flash. After browsing the gallery, we also had a sandwich at the little cafe. The lady who helped us was very friendly and the veggie chips were interesting.

I have recently arrived from Memphis where I was overwhelmed by its historic museums. Had I known before how fascinating they were, I would have asked for longer holidays and spent the whole Winter learning about the history. But my absolutely favourite was the Brooks Museum on 1934 Poplar ave, which is entirely dedicated to the Memphis Revolution. As inquisitive as I am, I stepped into the museum in a morning of a Winter day and left it when the night was falling.I was absolutely mesmerized by the works of art in the museum. There are different rooms which depict the architecture and lifestyle from the B.C. time to 21st century. There are enormous colourful canvas, amazing sculptures, exquisite silver and gold jewellery and even kings and queens garments. There is also multimedia and audio available for the young and the techi. Visitors can put on headphones and listen about this distant time, or they can use the computers to embark on a fascinating trip to the past.Another reason why I recommend going to the museum is because they have very friendly and informative occasional tour guides. There are big parking lots, spotless bathrooms a big cafeteria and all kinds of facilities which make the place also very attractive for school teachers visiting with groups of children. To sum up, I would highly recommend visiting this gorgeous museum in the heart of Memphis. The works of art are definitely a must-see and I’m sure it is worth a visit especially for children, who can have fun by learning about the history of Memphis.

This is the largest art museum in Tennessee but if you are not from Tennessee do not be surprised that this art museum is very tiny. I visited here while on vacation and there was basically no guests inside, I finished the museum in less than an hour. The outside of the building is beautiful and there are some cool pieces to look at, but it is only 3 floors and the entire bottom floor and part of the first floor was being remodeled when I visited. The staff was very polite and friendly. I would return when the bottom floor is done, hopefully they will have a lot more art to see.

I must say that they have some really nice pieces here and the admission is quite reasonable. However, if you don’t like to have kids in your museum then just don’t let them in. A 10 & 12 year old know better than to touch anything. When a boy is 3 feet from a painting he is not “too close”. A little over the top.

A must-see Memphis Museum that has something for everyone. Its reasonably priced especially considering the amount of time youll unintentionally end up spending here. You can easily let 3-4hrs slip by. So many different types of pieces! So interesting that adults and children from all walks of life are guaranteed to have a fun and educational day as well as get exercise walking around. You definitely have to come more than once to truly experience everything in my opinion.

This is the city owned art museum. They have nice exhibits and a beautiful permanent collection. But someone made a bad decision years ago and built a shoddy addition to the original museum. That addition is no good now, so theyve decided to build a whole new museum downtown by the river and leave this building abandoned. I hope the city can find something nice to put in it. The original building is very pretty.

The Brooks has art of various times, so everyone can find something of interest. The Carroll Cloar paintings especially interested us. On the top floor there is a wonderful room where children can become part of paintings by donning costumes, posing in front of backdrops, and commenting on the works of art they have seen. There is a good showing of the Masters in Art here and worth the trip to see. Interesting building, too!

Baseball photos, old art, a teddy bear made of bullets, you couldnt ask for more. I wonder how much they paid for Semiotics of the Kitchen a 6 minute black and white video of some gal holding up kitchen utensils. Seriously, thats all it is. Modern art is some kind of money laundering scam right? Thats the only plausible explanation. ...everything else in the museum is pretty good.

A cozy art museum in Overton Park. I went on a rainy morning (perfect weather for a museum) and enjoyed seeing new artists and some familiar favorites. The modern art on the first floor was a favorite. I think the lay out is a little strange in that you have to back track out of each gallery instead of it flowing from room to room. However, thats a small issue. The staff member at the store and front desk were very friendly.

The children from my aftercare program were taken to the museum on yesterday and the experience was HORRIBLE to say the least. The staff was far from welcoming. I had to deal with a nasty old lady demanding that my bag be left in the bin where they required our kids to leave their coats. As if that wasnt bad enough, the staff followed us around in every room that we entered. They made all types of comments regarding the students as if they were running wild in the museum which they were not! There were only 14 kids in the group, so there was no need for them to stalk us as we viewed the exhibits that were lackluster to begin with. It was so bad that myself nor the children were comfortable staying in the museum any longer. We left without seeing the entire museum and have no desire to return. Im not sure if this is how they treat all groups or if it was because we were a group of minorities that they felt did not belong. Either way it made us feel like we werent welcome. Needless to say, I will NEVER return to the Brooks Museum and I do not recommend that anyone takes their child or children there.

To begin with, wonderful! My son and I then began to tour when this obnoxious worker or volunteer stepped to me and stated I must place the ticket sticker on my shirt or I could be asked to leave. Not sure why as anyone who might ask me where the sticker was I could show it to them. She then proceed to chase down my son and I told her that I would let him know. No problem, rules are rules even if they are ridiculous. My son and I then stepped into another room on the first floor to view the religious art work in the room. As we were walking around the exact same woman came up to me and stated, I know you are not touching the art but you are too close, you must stay at least 6 inches away to protect the paintings. She continued to berate me like a child and I acknowledge her and stated I indeed was not to close to the paintings and left the room. In every town I visit I always visit the local museums and know how to act as I am a grown women who knows how to respect art and the paintings. If this museum is worried about how close someone is to the paintings, install barriers! She was so rude to me, we left within minutes of her confrontation. I wished that I had not donated prior to completing the tour as I would not have. As we were walking out, there was a blond hair child climbing all over the ropes surrounding the central tree in the lobby while no worker or parent reprimanded her. I will go out of my way to inform my friends and family to never step a foot into this place or donate to this museum. I sure that a review of the cameras within this building would validate my claims and hopefully a reprimand be given to the volunteer or worker involved. No love in Memphis today - totally ruined my visit to the area...come to Atlanta or Chattanooga and we will show you how to welcome people to the arts the correct and friendly way. Brooks museum you have a lot to learn!

The museum is nice, but it was awkward having people follow you around like stalkers thru the whole museum to make sure you dont touch or get close to things. Also, the space is small in some parts & they have silent alarms on all the art. If you get within 6 inches of anything they come fuss at you. Not a great place to take children. I was so stressed and irritated by not being within inches or keeping kids away from things..I couldnt enjoy it as much as I hoped. The best part about it was the 1 crazy chair. The kids enjoyed the open art area..but after we did that, we should have gone home. I said if I ever go back Im taking a ruler & walking around holding it.

We took a trip on up to Memphis to get out on a rainy winter weekend. We had not been to Brooks in years and were delighted they had a Georgia OKeeffe exhibit of painting done in Hawaii in the thirties. The museum has a bit of everything from medieval religious, classic, impressionist and a larger American collection. I appreciated their feature of regional artists which touched on Memphis, its culture and history. There is a fun collection of the Memphis music scene in photographs. I am partial to Caroll Cloar who captured the rural Delta scenes and its folks so well. We l certainly have to go more often; the staff is friendly and it is not so crowded that you can relax and take it in. (Veterans get in Free!)

The ancient art collection at Brooks shows some breadth; the Pre-Columbian collection features interesting pieces of work from the Valdivia culture in Ecuador (not always on display, though); and there is also a solid selection of oil paintings here (despite the critics, who could deny the captivating charm of Bouguereaus At the Foot of the Cliff?). Although none of the above curatorial areas is particularly strong, the museums setting, architecture, and reasonable admission fee combine to make it an inviting place to come. In addition, cafe food is decent and affordable. So, how would I describe a visit to Brooks? It really depends: if you are looking for an encyclopedic art experience, you may be a bit disappointed; however, if you just want to find a place to spend a few relaxing hours, then you shouldnt hesitate.

Jo

Great exhibits paired with an affordable cost. During out visit, there was a cymbal installation in one of the exhibits which would crash every 20 minutes or so. This was rather loud and distracting and detracted from the other pieces in the room.

This is a great place to hang out and look at a variety of interesting art forms. Right now they have a Georgia OKeefe exhibit that I highly recommend. They also do a good job of incorporating Memphis history and art into the museum, which I can really appreciate. The cafe also tends to have some really good and not (terribly) expensive food. I got a pasta salad and Id say it was definitely better than most museum café food Ive had.

The museum itself was nice. But we left early because the staff made us very uncomfortable. When we got there, the girl at the front desk wasn’t there. So another woman gave us stickers and told us to pay when we were leaving. I guess they thought we were going to skip out on $17. The staff followed us around the entire time talking to each other on their little microphones. It was unpleasant to say the least. We won’t be going back.
