This place is magnificent!! I was enthralled with the gardens, the house. Everywhere you look you see mountains!! And the views!! How can you not love it!! This place is very lovely and has so much history! I wouldnt mind living here at all and giving tours!
Lovely home and walk through the home was interesting. Grounds were beautiful in the fading fall season of flowers. Pullman car was interesting as was the observatory. Felt comfortable with the covid guidelines they had in place
Had a great visit here for the weekend. Very clean, friendly staff and our room was very spacious. Breakfast seating was spaced out as to not feel crowded during our current state of Covid. Highly recommend this place for a weekend getaway or if your looking for a place on your way to your final destination.
Went here during the summer but i really want to come back in the fall. my second visit here in 2 years and they updated the site. added the farm grounds. all the staff were wonderful and the addition of the farm is great. this site gets better and better. dont plan on a quick stop. there is way too much too see. we spent the whole day from 9 am to 4 pm and we werent bored for a minute. this time we did the extra tour of the house and the girl was wonderful. this is a must see place.
Amazing park and hikes. Entry tickets are for $23 per person.( Sep 2019). Well organized place. They have trails all around the estate. Dont miss the Dene. You can walk there, but they have a tram service every 30 minutes. The wetland boardwalk in the Dene is an amazing place with breathtaking views. There is a farm with alpacas, sheep, rabbits, pigs, cows etc.
Awesome place to visit and picture living in. A little steep on the ticket prices but really enjoyed it overall
Everyone was so friendly!! The grounds were gorgeous and my husband and I learned so much. We truly enjoyed our experience!
Hildene is an amazing property with so much history and a spectacular venue for your Vermont wedding. Just imagine a romance session in the gardens or your first look in the front of the mansion. I look forward to the next wedding I photograph there. Not only is the venue extraordinary, but the staff is professional and friendly and weddings there run like clock work.
Wonderful grounds to explore with the family. It could be a day long experience or just a few hours. The gardens are exceptional.
Beautiful with amazing history and sceneries.
Amazing Place. Great views of the mountains, gorgeous garden, cool history. A must visit if you are staying in the area. I took over 50 pictures.
Such a wonderful experience. We were pleasantly surprised with all of the available activities at Hildene. They do an amazing job here and I highly recommend a visit. From the fully decorated train car to the goat farm and beautiful gardens, the mansion is just one small piece of the puzzle. So much to see and do and I learned more about the Lincoln Family than I thought possible. It’s a full immersion experience for sure. We’ll definitely be back with friends and family.
One of the best curated historic sites Ive seen, and beautiful grounds. The view of the mountains was incredible. Definitely worth the trip, and a great place to spend a few hours.
This is a nice summer home of 8000 square ft that is faithfully restored and presented. Hard to get there in the hours available.
Something for everyone at Hildene. Nature trails, farm animals, formal gardens, the mansion and Pullman car tours, mountain views, gift shop with Lincoln family history throughout.
A must visit when traveling on US 7 in VT. Fascinating story of Lincolns son. Learned things I never new about him and his success.
Beautiful setting this fall. A lot of walking up hill be prepared if you use a cane
I would say the house itself is so so. But the view of the house and the garden and the farm are amazing. Worth to see.
We visited on our way home back from Woodstock. Definitely wouldn’t miss it. The grounds and the home are beautiful. The view alone is worth it. We got to mean newly born goats as well!! Beautiful piece of history.
The presidents sons residence for many years. He was a great business man.
Had a great time here with the kids.
I cant say enough good things about this place. We originally didnt even have this on our list of things to do but it was recommended to us and were glad we went. The house, railroad car and gardens are beautiful, with lots of great historical information. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and provide lots of great information. There is a goat dairy on the property, which all the adults and kids in our party loved. We got to watch them milk the mothers and we met baby goats that were born this week. Originally I thought the price for an adult ticket ($23) was a bit pricey but we were there for 3 hours and definitely got our money worth. Highly recommended.
Wish we stopped by earlier than 3pm since it closes at 4:30pm. You can easily spend your entire day here and get your moneys worth ($23). There is lots to see and hear, and miles to walk around
We had a great time. The addition of the Pullman Car, and the ironic history lesson it tells, was a reminder that we shouldnt make judgements about the past with the mores and values of today. Thanks so much to all the efforts of the Friends of Hildene.
Stunning property, beautiful home.. lots of history. We had no idea we would be there almost all day but we were. Lots do to and see.. even a little farm with baby goats. Not a lot of walking as they have golf carts with drivers, highly recommend and its worth the money.
Great trails to walk and a beautiful home and grounds to see.
Breathtaking and absolutely lovely. #lincolnsknowhowtodecorate
An estate of some historic significance, lovingly preserved and cared for by a large staff on a beautiful slice of land nestled among Vermont’s Green Mountains (Hildene being an old English term for hills and valleys, with water, is a well chosen name for this estate). I don’t think, however, that this place is at its full potential. At 23 USD per visitor, the youth classroom ought to be open all year with age appropriate historical lessons about Lincoln and his legacy and his family. It should have more frequent classroom events. There should be an on site cafe, which I believe are in the plans. The tour of the house is excellent, but some video and multimedia guidance would make the self guided tour even more enriching. The goat farm is lovely but the young teenager tending the goats was not even remotely interested in being a guide for us even in the most informal sense. It’s a working goat milk dairy which is lovely - perhaps a twice a day tour ending with a bit of a sample and a chance to purchase the goat cheese being made and aged on site would be a nice treat for visitors going out of their way to visit the estate. I give it 6 out of 10 for living up to its enriching educational potential and 8 out of 10 for the loving preservation of this beautiful place.
Beautiful grounds to take in some breathtaking views and history. Friendly and accommodating staff helped plan out a wonderful day at this gem in Manchester. There is also a Pullman luxury train car to walk through, which is rare to find. Fantastic experience, highly recommend if youre in the area.
Great history, gardens, museum shop, dairy farm, and hiking trails.
Love all the history!!! Everything in this home is original from when the family lived there!
Everything was well taken care of, and the guide was knowledgeable! They really have a bit of everything here! This was great for 4 generations of my family. Everyone had a blast, we got some AMAZING pictures and no one was left out of the fun!We enjoyed the history, the gardens, the observatory, the goat barn is definitely worth riding the trolly for... The goats are so funny, and they have detailed description of what everything is, and the process by which they do everything that they do!Thank you
We stopped in to visit the baby goats and the Pullman car. Both my little ones throughly enjoyed each expirence. The staff is amazing, kind and so helpful! Would love to visit the home next time.
Absolutely beautiful, the admission you pay is well worth all the things you get to explore. You can roam almost all of the mansion, the gardens, goat farm, and several trails. Views are breathtaking and theres lots of historical goodies. Definitely would recommend!
Great walking trails.Lovely grounds. Informative tours.Limited food options at gift shop.Lovely picnic area. I would pack a lunch next time.Limited parking.
Cant miss the Pullman car on display here.
This property will be certain to transport you back in time. Beautiful scenic views, and don’t miss the hiking trails to the dene. The gift shop is one of a kind, I have to limit my purchases as there are so many unique items. Don’t miss it!
Loved this place. I only had 2 hours so I only was the house, garden, and Pullman car. Planning to return to walk the trails, etc. Historical, educational, and lovely grounds to stroll through.
Another view of life as it was. Beautifully restored and our tour guide/ docent was very good. A wonderful value and brought the history to us.
Worth a stop, very interesting venue, very informative staff, beautiful gardens
Beautiful home with wonderful farms and gardens.
Nice day for a walk around the grounds.
Great place, especially if you like history and love exploring yesterday
Amazing spot. We explored most of the location and it took about 5 hours. Very friendly, helpful staff who are eager to give you more history and info. The gift shop has incredible options too.
Great place to visit. Beautiful grounds. Loved petting the goats!
Hildene was an absolutely beautiful mansion. I truly enjoy history and was impressed with their background on Robert Lincoln. We enjoyed the guided tour of the home and the gardens. However, the speech at the Pullman car could be improved. I did not appreciate her historical context. Please state the facts from history without adding your opinion or becoming political. If you must be political, please post it on a sign and individuals can read it if they prefer. The town of Manchester was beautiful and the people were so friendly.
Very pretty house to tour and grounds. Separate garden is nice. The best part is the goats you can let at the farm. Take their free trolley and pet the goats!! They are very good goats!
One of the best preserved mansions with all the original furniture and house items. Bonus: one of the few organs of its kind ever made still functioning and playing music. Great staff, very knowledgeable and motivated.
As a wedding photographer, I can say that this is one of my favorite venues! The ceremony place is amazing with stunning view of rolling fields and the famed Battenkill River Valley 300 feet below.Sergey Lapkovsky Photography
Beautiful grounds and great experience! Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. We drove out of the way for this visit and it was well worth it.
One of my favorite stops when in VT. Transports you back in time. Beautiful views, fabulous gift shop, peaceful walking trails.
Although it was raining the day we toured Hildene a couple of Octobers ago, it was a great experience. Of interest was the beautiful sounding AEolian pipe organ as well as all the Lincoln family furniture as well as the original Lincoln family artifacts; Robert Todd Lincolns private Observatory with his huge telescope next to the main house and the fully restored 1903 wooden Pullman Palace Railroad traveling car, named Sunbeam. The eldest son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, he became the President of the Pullman Company in 1897 upon the death of George Pullman. Under Lincoln, the Pullman Company became the largest manufacturing company in the world. Of the 4 sons born to the Lincolns, Robert was the only to reach adulthood. He led a fascinating life under the shadow of his fathers legacy, an accomplished corporate attorney with a law degree from Harvard, he served on General Ulysses S. Grants staff during the Civil War, was Secretary of War under President James A. Garfield (assassinated) continuing under Chester A. Arthur. Then US Ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Benjamin Harrison. Four years before he died, in 1922, he participated in the Lincoln Memorial Dedication, Washington, DC. Robert Todd Lincoln died at Hildene on July 26, 1926, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Had the unique situation of being around the assassination of 2 US Presidents.
We enjoyed the tour. I didnt realize that Abraham Lincoln had a son that was that wealthy. He was president of the Pullman railroad car.
Nice and historic place. Very educational and a very knowledgeable staff. I would recommend doing the archive tour for a small additionional fee. I enjoyed seeing priceless Lincoln artifacts and parts of the house not open to everyone on this tour.
Tour of Robert Lincolns family home, goat dairy and landscape.
Classic early 20th country house. Historic Lincoln memorabilia with majestic mountain views
It was a very interesting place. Learned a lot about Lincolns son and how he lived. The home is beautiful definitely worth the money and time.
Not worth $23 ticket, it is not president Lincolns house but but his son Robots house.
Beautiful gardens and the house is fascinating.
Great place to visit historical, educational and a view to die for!!!
It was so cold the day we arrived but we thoroughly enjoyed this place so much! The staff is friendly and helpful!
Beautiful gardens and amazing history lesson.
We enjoyed our trip to Hildene. We arrive later in the day and were not able to see all that it has to offer. We were able to tour the Lincoln family home and found the staff to be quite knowledgeable and the Mansion to be very impressive.
Amazing place
If you are into history and beautiful places then make sure to visit this historic site.
Much better than I thought it would be. Guides were OK and answered any questions. Beautiful grounds and property. Interesting things about the Lincolns not many people would know.
An amazing story behind the preservation of a historic jewel in the Green Mountains. Abrahams only son raised his family here and has promoted much of his fathers dedication to early education here. Fantastic gardens amd views. The staff is among the most accommodating Ive encountered in my travels. I recommend you consider hosting your wedding party there. Tent and catering service is top notch for all functions.
Historical home of Lincolns son. He was also Head of Pullman Company so they have a restored first-class Pullman car on site. All of the staff were helpful and informative. Delightful place for an afternoon visit.
Gorgeous place to see. Its a hidden gem. Lots of history and the staff is very knowledgeable and willing to share their knowledge with you. A must see!
Spectacular gardens and fabulous views
Beautiful location, kids loved the property and the goats! Also one of the best gift shops Ive ever seen.
What a nice place the staff was very knowledgeable a lot of information on Robert Lincoln. Beautiful restoration. Its $23. A person plus $7. For guided tour. So it adds up quick if you have a family of four.
Staff was very friendly and helpful. This place is beautiful
Well maintained, pleasant and helpful staff. Only a few things to see, but plenty to fill an afternoon. Second time here with plans to return once the trails are ready for cross country skiing.
You would have to try really hard not to like a visit to Hildene, the summer retreat of R.T. Lincoln, the only surviving child of Abraham Lincoln, and his family. RT Lincoln served in several presidential administrations, but he is best know for his association with the Pullman Railroad Company, to which he eventually succeeded as president, and which was the source of his wealth. The centerpiece of the estate is the house; a masterpiece of understated elegance built during the closing years of the Gilded Age. Situated on over 400 acres, there is much more to see and do than just visit the house, such as the gardens and farm. The jewel of the exhibits is a restored Pullman railroad carriage, which is located a few hundred yards from the main house. Highly knowledgeable docents are stationed throughout the estate to lecture as well as answer questions: they demure, however, if questioned closely on RT Lincolns labor practises and politics during his tenure at the Pullman Company. Otherwise, enjoy!
Oh what a gorgeous view!! Friendly staff. Take as little or as much time as you like. Trams available when you get weary.
LOVED This place!!!! One should research about this place before visiting. Worth the reading before visiting.
A hidden treasures - dont miss the Pullman car
Beautiful. Go see it. Not the best for children unless they are very well behaved. Docents have many good stories you will enjoyMake sure to see and hear the player organ
Beautiful place full of history and amazing views
This place is a historical jem, inside and out. Not only is the house amazingly beautiful but the grounds and the views are absolutely gorgeous!
Lovely home, property, goats are cute. Nice video about the restoration of the Pullman car.
So many great things to see here!
This is a GREAT way to spend a day. A bit of walking, but they do have trams. The grounds, garden and home are stunning. Two working farms & a boardwalk across the marsh, all a wonderful experience.
Nice place to visit with you family
Beautiful and serene place! The house, the grounds, the railroad car and the goats. A great experience and possibly the highlight of our week in Vermont! Like everyone else said, the baby goats steal the show.
It was like a walk back in time. Very enjoyable.
Self guided tour, beautiful and well maintained. Awesome place!
Its beautiful there. And the gardens are lovely. Interesting artifacts.
Very cool, especially the organ demo. We also loved being able to tour at our own pace.
Beautiful property and mansion
Very Interesting and Beautiful !
Cool to see the inside and gardens, but theres honestly not much to see besides that. I also saw some farm animals and fields, but it was so hot and you have to do A LOT of walking if youre not going to use a car or bus.
Beautiful home of the Lincoln Family, Abe didnt live long enough to get there. Furnishings are original and the view is spectacular
Very historical and beautiful grounds. Pretty well preserved, though a bit expensive. Make sure to visit the Pullman car. Very friendly tour guides
Was really interesting. Loved the train car!
Surprisingly interesting. The Pullman car exhibit, with the focus on the porters, was outstanding. The location and the grounds are lovely.
