Great museum to come to. This place is beautiful and does a wonderful job with social distancing and other COVID protocols. My favorite exhibit has to be ancient art since they feature so many beautiful pieces. Another favorite part of the museum of mine is the staff. They are extremely helpful and are very nice. Great museum to go to!

We went to see the Warhol exhibition. His work wasnt as interesting as I expected. At least with a master like Picasso, you see a growth of artistry skills. Warhols big prints are amazing for the sheer magnitude. Yes it takes talent to make these prints. It just wasnt what we like.

The new addition has made a good museum great. This collection is an assortment of artistic jewels, now with enough space to give them context and breathing room. The addition also affords space for special exhibits. The recent Picasso to Pollock was a delight. Theres enough here to spend the day, but even if you only have an hour between meetings, you will find inspiration, beauty, and artistic range for every taste.

The Speed Art Museum is wonderful! Sunday is free, though parking was $7. The little bistro inside has delicious food and artisan drinks. The collect is separated into regions/time period it is interesting to see how the world looked at similar times through different eyes. Oh, and there is an interactive area for kids in the lower level. I spent the whole day and didnt get to see everything, definitely going back.

Andy Warhol Exhibit was truly stunning, MIRACULOUS even ; ). Seeing the images and artwork of Warhols Mother Julia was a surprising treat, and the rest of the museum, old wings and new, was a sincere delight of sober, thoughtful, and at times playful curation. For example the juxtaposition of hand-woven and finely-detailed 15th- and 16th-century tapestries, some as big as theater screens, towering over intricate German paper engravings, the size of credit cards, was a pleasure in and of itself. Similar snacks for the mind, and bodys five senses lie around every corner. We have NEVER been disappointed visiting the Speed Art Museum, nor have we yet to visit the same Speed twice. Bravo! : )

Really great art museum. Not huge but a diverse collection and they change their art shows fairly often. Handicap accessible and child friendly. They have portable chairs you can take with you, earphones and noise muffling headphones as well ad wheelchairs and strollers available. They have a childrens section and a nice gift shop and cafe. Theres a nice nursing station in the first floor bathroom as well as a gender neutral restroom. The museum also hosts lots of special events for members and the community.

The Speed Art Museum has a really nice collection for a city the size of Louisville. It is actually on the University of Louisville Campus. They had several special exhibits when we visited today, including a Hunter S. Thompson Gonzo exhibit. Sunday admission was free, and the facility was not crowded at all. We will visit again!

First time here was for the Steven Holl lecture hosted by UK. Speed was a perfect venue for the talk, and it was awesome to see Mayor Fischer introduce the event. Great also to see the Speed partnering on these type of civic arts/culture partnerships.Second visit was for a Free Sunday, and I absolutely loved the Louisville / local artist exhibit on the top floor (at the back) the self-trained artist (I think it was called rhapsody in brown??) was such a unique lens into the history of West Louisville and I appreciated seeing that the Speed is highlighting this part of the city’s history.

Quite a variety of interesting pieces. Lots of unique items you wont find anywhere else. Im not sure why it is called Speed Art. We arrived with only one hour to peruse and we were rushed and still missed a lot. You definitely need a few hours if you like to read descriptions, pause at pieces and/or take photos (no flash photography ). I would definitely return. Note: Free on Sundays and accepts token donations. I recommend this place.

Online it said there’s a tour New Year’s Day at 1pm, so that would mean they’re open. My local museum in StLouis was open New Years so it would make sense. I had never been to Speed, and planned a trip to Louisville. I also tried calling several times to triple check, but couldn’t get a person on the phone. No recording said they’d be closed. Then the day before, they posted conflicting information on the website saying they’re closed New Year’s but didn’t even bother to remove the information saying they’re open. All I ask is that you inform the general public of holiday closures in advance, because duh. Some people like art museums and travel and need to know. Thanks.

I went here on a date and it ended up being a great time. You can tell they are very serious about the building and art integrity and everything is super clean. It took us about 3 hours to get through and see everything. If theres one thing I would improve, Id like for there to be more modern work because while there was some, there wasnt a ton. I also wished that there were more large sculptures. There were a few, but I love big pieces of art like that. Regardless, its a beautiful place and a great way to spend an afternoon. PS- the parking garage cost us $10 if you wanted to know rates

Love it, but please talk to the workers to not stare holes in people’s eyes. I understand that their job is to make sure no one is touching the art or stealing it, but it isn’t necessary for a worker to literally watch you and look at you in the eye as you read a caption. Just today, I was looking at a painting and I looked to the left and the worker was staring right at me and didn’t care that it was obvious. It is very uncomfortable and makes me not come. Long story short, please tell them to not make the staring obvious. Ps.. the lady chaperoning the Christianity part, needs a talk, because she is very rude. Thank you.

This is not an encyclopedic museum, but the staff here certainly knows how to make the most of a not-so-extensive collection (relatively speaking). The architecture is visually pleasing and the exhibition spaces are spacious. Signage is clear and the navigation between galleries is a breeze. Interpretive labels obviously receive a lot of curatorial attention: not only do almost all objects on display come with their own labels, but each of them has a small topic of its own.Together, these elements constitute a pleasant visiting experience that makes the admission fee more than justified. Like what is stated on the Museums website: whether you are an art aficionado or dont know a Dali from a Degas, this is a great place for you to spend a few quality hours.

Okay I want to talk about the films available to watch at the Speed. I attended the past two Saturdays at the afternoon showings at 3 pm. Great program. Great line up. Recently the Aretha film, the Halston film, Nureyev. All excellent. Mz Robin Burke comes out and gives a little talk at the beginning of the film with a little history of the film being presented. It’s a small intimate little theater that recently upgraded their sound system and did an overhaul on their projectors. How do I know this? Well, Robin told me and everyone in the theater and she is right-the sound is amazing. Robin then offers to anyone who would like a blanket because with the museum’s humidity controls, it can get a little chilly in there. Sweet! After my first visit I packed in my own hoodie. It’s a nice break from the overbearing heat and humidity that is Louisville Kentucky this time of year. if you come in on the North side entrance you get to sneak a peek at the current works being shown as you walk through the museum to the theater. Awesome. There is a parking garage that you can pull up into to park your car, which I did for the past two movies that I saw but next time I’m going to try something different and park on the street across from the museum. Why? I will tell you why. Because on top of the price of the film, it was 7 dollars to park which is a little steep for parking when I’m already paying to see a fiIm. I think that the walk across the street will be fine. There is a cool water feature outside near the entrance to the Museum and we ended up hanging out there and under the ramp of the parking garage after. There are a couple of benches where we sat and chilled. We ran into friends there after the Nureyev movie and we did pretend ballet moves. Also you’re handed a print out with info about the film to read later. Great Program. It makes film seem important again. Film is important! Please support this wonderful series I am certain that you will love it as much as I do...Here’s some pics of us hanging out after. Obviously we are having a great time. Beat the heat and check it out. Oh yeah! Almost forgot...For the later showings the Wiltshire Pantry offers snacks and drinks available for purchase and whatever comes out of that kitchen is always special and always tasty.
