I recently visited this museum during a conference field trip. They closed off the museum and we only had a chance to see part of it. A lot of great art displayed. We had a private lunch in their patio area. Lots of cactus and a stage where mariachi performed. I’d love to come back and check out the rest of the museum.

I enjoyed my time at MOLAA, I liked the exhibits were nice, the music was great, and the food trucks were nice. Overall, I think this is an important place to see a different perspective from what I am used too. However, I did not feel like I learned much about Latin American Art when I went. My best guess is that they were doing work on an exhibit. I would suggest checking what exhibit is on display before going, so you dont run into the problem I did. Will come back to see the new exhibits!

You never know whats going to be on display here! The rotating exhibits are delightful. Very different from each other. Right now theyre showing huge black and white photographs made of gunpowder! After the artist creates his images he lights them on fire! Each panel is at least 6 ft tall by 3 to 5 ft wide. Haunting images. In another gallery they have textile scenes sown by women protesting their governments in Chile. then you walk into the gift shop and its a whole another gallery in and of itself. Yolanda Gonzalezs painted vases and bowls are truly amazing! Thursday nights the museum stays open late and they have guest artists present their wares in the foyer. Please stop by and support artists work.

The current tattoo exhibit is especially incredible, with very personal stories, and moving representations of those stories being tattooed onto the people sharing their experiences. If you have the chance to check it out before it wraps, you absolutely should. The rest is also good. Incredibly reasonable ticket prices as well.

MOLAA is a museum dedicated to Latin American Art in Southern California in Long Beach; the only museum in the US to exclusively feature works by people of Latin American decent. It is relatively a midsize museum, impeccably clean, well curated, air conditioned and wonderful exhibits.Parking lot is huge. Admission price is relatively affordable; Sundays are free!! Staff are friendly and competent. Museum store is small and souvenirs are tad pricey. Overall, a good museum that every family or individual should visit and enjoy Hispanic Culturas y Artes.

Love this space soo much. In 2018 I saw some amazing exhibitions here including; INK Stories on Skin and Judith Hernandez A Dream is the Shadow of Something Real. This place is singular in its focus on Latin American artist, that usually get overlooked at other places. Large space, but the exhibitions are curated very well, so it doesnt feel like youre at a loss. They have talks and an interactive space to do art. The gift shop is small but I really enjoyed some of the things they sell. Love this place, parking is on site or on the street and Sundays are free. Definitely would recommend, if you have time for only one thing in Long Beach make it the MOLAA

The MOLAA was Empty! What did I pay for? Was it robbed? Where did all the wonderful Latin American Art go?The first 2 rooms I entered had NO ART on the walls. White walls with nothing on them. I did notice the wide open spaces, high ceilings and nice hardwood floor. Instead, there were some basic information boards displayed in English and Spanish about Spanish people. I could have googled that! When I entered a third very large empty room, I noticed art, as there were 2 large brown murals on the walls. But thats it. The murals were not to my taste. The 2 very similar murals depicted tattooed people performing tasks such as one person on her cell phone, one person drinking beer, and one person getting a tattoo. In the background was a painted floor-like tile pattern. I left to see what was in the next room, and once again, the only thing in the room was 1 or 2 more of the same murals. We found a smaller room with two small scenes on tables. One had a farm scene and other had an inventor and his invention scene. There were also 2 small (18 inches?) screens with video of the 2 scenes coming to life. Okay, that was interesting... Last, we found a room with about 20 small place mat-sized fabric art pieces on the wall. Somewhere along the way was an area with art that was supposed to be waves (?) in abstract, but they werent presented well (no frames, etc.) and looked... abstract. We were told about a sculpture garden, so we ventured to find it. Poor signage. We found ourselves walking outside along a narrow passageway between 2 buildings for about 50 feet to find the sculpture garden. It was an open stark cement area with about 10 sculptures (some in disrepair with paint peeling). When we returned to the lobby, we saw a group of performers yelling at each other, acting out a scene.I had really thought that MoLAA was going to be something special. This museum has GREAT bones and could and should be amazing. It should contain a variety of art and and has the capacity to hold a lot of amazing art. Maybe the curator could please visit some of the other museums around Los Angeles County, like, El Segundo (ESMoA), Los Angeles (LACMA, the Getty, the Broad Museam), and get inspired to fill the Art Museum with art!

Every time I go to the LA area I enjoy the cutting edge exhibits at MOLAA. In Sept., 2018+, this was literally true as one of their special shows was on LA tattoos. In addition to the naval connection to LA and international roots of this body art, various local artists works were displayed. Also, one section had videos of various people selected who would receive tattoos on specified days during the exhibit. In addition works by two female Latino artists were shown. And do step outside in the walled in back courtyard where sculpture and cacti are displayed together. Currently, the outside café is closed for renovations. Free parking is available in the adjacent lot, and do stop into the museum shop that has gifts related to current exhibits. And enjoy free admission on Sundays thanks to Target.
