This is actually a great museum. It’s got two sections. The first is an 1800’s village that you can take guided tours of for a small fee ($1.50), complete with a print shop, pub and some other cabins and houses. The second section is the main museum itself (free), with tons of exhibits, ranging from artifacts from the daily life of early Arkansans, Native American artifacts, Civil War artifacts, early exploration artifacts, and more. Definitely a good stop when you’re in historic downtown.
This is an amazing place to learn about history. They had beautiful quilts. Gorgeous hand made knives and a section on American Indians. You can choose to pay $2.50 to see historical buildings. One that is said to be oldest in Little Rock. Excellent experience. Dont hesitate to go.
Absolutely loved this museum! Its free to tour the gallery and they have guided tours for a small fee. The gift shop has lots of interesting little items. I picked up a very tiny mason jar of honey and a bat magnet. The artwork and artifacts here are pretty tame so its a good place for kids. I highly recommend checking it out.
The staff are highly qualified and the exhibits are exquisit. The highlight of the experience were the collection of highly crafted knives from local bladesmiths.
The staff were friendly, approachable and informative, the admission is free but if you want a guided tour it is $2:50 for adults and I would recommend it, there are galleries with artefacts and modern pieces, the knife display was very interesting, outside is a selection of historical/period buildings from the 1800s, I particularly enjoyed the printers building, the gardens have some interesting plants including a cotton plant, I would definitely recommend a visit...
We just visited this lovely museum, and what a pleasure it was!The guided tour of the buildings, for a VERY nominal fee ($1.50 for seniors) was truly exceptional. Casey was our docent, and he was amazing! He is passionate about what he does, he knows such a lot of the regional history, and he really brings a lot of knowledge to the subject. Thanks very much Casey.Another real highlight was the living history guide who was portraying Tabby, a person of history from the appropriate time era. The woman was truly exceptional....you really believed her. She is a gifted re-enactor, making history come alive. Dont miss this gem of a museum!
You will always learn something on the tours of the older construction, and the attached museum has incredible exhibits and connections rotating through. A true gem.
First of all it is free and you cant beat that price! Also, there are always several events and its great for kids. There is a trolley pick up next to museum so you can double the fun.
The grounds were amazing! It was so interesting, educational, and the guide was friendly and funny. I love the native American exhibit and seeing local art. I love that the gift shop has local items as well. Great for tourists and locals, family fun for all ages
The place is huge with some awesome art. Very cultural and I appreciate it!
Wonderful place to visit and learn. Great Christmas celebration. Bad parking tho. Be careful where you park.
Great atmosphere and was a great experience with small kids! The employees were so nice and great at talking to and had so much patience with my two kids (4 and 2 years old). They could answer every question we threw their way and you could tell they have a real passion for the place and history.
Terrible. Not sure if the person at the front counter was paid or a volunteer. Definitely did not get the same level of service as the family of three who came probably two minutes before me. She didnt welcome me, she didnt explain the museum, the exhibits, the cost or basically anything. Had to ask for everything. Decided to pay the $2.50 for the tour. I asked how many buildings would I be able to see. There were about three employees or volunteers standing around the counter, and I got three different answers. Went on the tour, and Im not sure if this was the persons first time touring or what, but she didnt have a clue to wait for the entire group to come into a building before she started speaking, nor did she preface with, Im going to close this building up now, and we will make our way over to xxx building. Wow. She came alive at the end of our tour when she was explaining city blocks 31, 32 and 33. The living history people . . . one in the print shop spoke way too fast and it was hard to understand him. The other person was very, very good . . . but had nail polish on! She was excellent--I would guess has a theatre background, but was not totally authentic. The exhibits are free and I would encourage you to check them out. Excellent Bowie knife exhibit and Colors of Arkansas exhibit. I dont think the people working or volunteering at the front counter care very much. Could be so much more!!!!
Love this place! Tree Docs did a great work with the trees.definitely worth going.
Overall, my experience was good. There is an historical village that you can tour, but I did not go. I believe I was too early for a tour. While walking through the museum I actually felt like I was walking through an art museum. There were a few exhibits for Arkansas history but they were rather small. The museum itself is very small, inside. I was looking for more of a history of rather than a display of art. The exhibit for Arkansas blade smith was sort of neat. I went upstairs to the Native American exhibit and it was sort of a let down. I enjoy reading about and viewing Native American history and wished they had done more. Overall, it was worth a stop to check things out.
The museum is amazing. It is very well worth visiting. Quilts from early 1800s, knife collection, history of Quapaw and Caddo indians, along with some of the earliest buildings in Little Rock. The staff reenacts characters from the time in telling the history of the buildings. If you are interested in early history of the area, you will not be disappointed.
Nice little spot! I came in from Michigan! Really cool galleries!
Love the Indian artifacts
Good place but there were alot of rude people. The staff was awesome.
I love visiting Historic Arkansas. I love the shop. I stopped in yesterday just for the stout mustard. The workers are so fun and full of great info about the buildings and people from the time. I always learn so much from them! I esp loved watching one of them cooking an authentic meal in the kitchen. That was an absolute delight!!
2nd Friday art night is an especially great night to go!
We took the grandkids and they enjoyed it very much. We will go back again
A lot of history and its free! Great place to visit as a tourist!
Love this place. Always has interesting things about history.
A wonderful experence, knowing about there culture
Tour guide was awesome the history was even cooler
I was very pleasantly surprised by this museum. It includes a free portion (its internal galleries) and a paid portion (its external preserved half-block of Little Rock historical buildings). The external portion is only $2.50, and I believe that is more than reasonable. Some of the buildings are only viewable from the outside, but several are open for you to go inside and explore. Those buildings are staffed with reenactors, which makes your viewing more fun. The internal galleries include a permanent exhibit on Native American tribes and temporary exhibits. On the day I went, there was an excellent cross stitch sampler exhibit, art from different Arkansan counties, and a truly lovely exhibit from the collection of an art professor and his wife. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this museum and will go back in the future.
The museum itself is wonderful, but the tour of the restored builds was spectacular. Dont miss it.
Staff was helpful. Their native American history is very interesting.
This urban museum of Arkansas history (including the actual building in which the state legislature first met--a pub with sleeping rooms--is a gem for those interested in American history of the 1820s and 1830s. The galleries are home to seasonal exhibits on the Bowie knife (in some circles called the Arkansas Toothpick, and other interests from the states history will satisfy your culture-hunger and give you a unique glimpse into one of Americas charming small states.
Very sweet employees, very interesting history!
Beautiful place with beautiful grounds and historic buildings.
Visited the museum as I was passing through Little Rock and was amazed by the quality of the exhibits and the information! Would absolutely go again!!
It has a few art exhibits and some historic houses. I think the tours are on the hour.
Ive been here many times as s child and now as a teacher. I just realized during my last field trip that the houses are original. Like a little hamlet in time smack dab in the middle of the city. Amazing! The tour guides are always kind to our students and knowledgeable about Arkansas history.
Not for everyone but I enjoyed it. Excellent knife exhibits. I loved the mid-late 1800s handwritten letters. What a step back in time. The native exhibits are worth the visit in and of itself.
Had a great time. We took a tour of the houses and watched a great film and interesting gift shop, and art museum along with the Bowie knife exhibit. Overall a great trip.
Nice, little museum. Staffed by helpful, friendly people.Allergy suffers beware, they didnt have a cat that patrols the museum. However, it usually avoids guests and stays out of sight.
Great exhibits! And they dont hide the less palatable aspects of our history, but neither do they celebrate them. Good balance, hard to achieve in practice. Awesome job!
Very interesting. A lot of beautiful Christmas decorations and activities for children. Great historical information given.
Amazing displays. Free of charge, great way to explore and learn about Arkansas. Super friendly staff.
Arkansas should be proud of this little Museum. it provides a great look back into the history of Arkansas and open my eyes to a number of things that I did not understand well before. Very much worth the time learning about the history of Arkansas and the people that live there I recommend it highly..
I am a history buff, so love this place. The staff has always been friendly and knowledgeable and the exhibits are displayed very well and contain good historic information.
Native American exhibit is super informative
I love to check out the new exhibit each time I visit. I get something Arkansas Made in the Gift Shop, too.
Electronic displays were not working. Had they been working it would likely have greatly improved the experience.
Incredible! Awesome exhibits, and the grounds tours are too affordable not to go
Very informative. They had period actors who really knew their history about the place. The gift shop has a lot of really neat stuff. Their galleries were full of interesting things.
Not really a whole lot to see, Id recommend maritime and national guard museum instead or the MacArthur museum. However, the Historic museum does have some amazing knives and swords on display, when I visited Hands on History was closed and Ive heard thats basically half the reason to visit it. So, contact them, make sure the hands on history is open before you go there Id say.
A great introduction to early nineteenth century Arkansas.
Well run gallery. Nice art
Its part of the river front so if that is wonderful this has to be included in order to make it all happen
Beautiful place with lots of art and historic exhibits. This is one of our favorite spots in LR.
The 2nd Friday art night events they host are so much fun! They ask for donations but offer free wine and finger food!
I loved this place as a child. I have passed that love on to my children and grandchildren.
They have a suprisingly sized gallery that is quite varied. Its easy to spend a whole day here. From the buildings that are outside and the art inside its a great place.
Not a museum like youd normally think of one. While there is a large building with exhibits (historic and art exhibits), the real jewels are the historic buildings that have been picked up and moved to the museum grounds. Theres basically a little historic block. The museum regularly has free public events where re-enactors will show you how people use to use the buildings and tools to go about life. Its honestly one of Little Rocks treasures.
Pretty cool exhibits, Id go again if I were in the area
The museum was pretty cool you go on a tour through some houses from the 19th century and there are actors in each house that tell you the history of the area and you get a glimpse of how they lived there lives and what one of the first printing presses looked like. The most interesting part of the museum in my opinion is the huge collection of native american artifacts.
The historic buildings have been beautifully preserved and the interpreters make the experience great for kids. The price of admission is well worth it. The gallery is small, but nice and also worth a look since admission to it is free. The knife collection, in particular, is interesting.
Although I have no particular interest in quilts or knives, I found those displays to be quite interesting!
Very awesome & brought out the origins of Arkansas
Wonderful place to learn about early territorial AR with the outside restored buildings. Also, the museum is quite interesting, with not only Arkansas historical items, but also some excellent artwork from the past 100 years.
A great state to visit and so nice and green. People are friendly as well.
Very good....
Nice museum. Indoor section is free, out buildings require a small donation. Really good display of Bowie knives Im first floor gallery.
Great place to learn some Arkansas history.
The blacksmith shop is cool
Had a wonderful time there today
Well placed exhibit.
Love HAM. Wonderful Art and history of Arkansas
This place is awesome and filled with Arkansas history. Cant beat the price anywhere.Love it.
Very nice museum. Great things for the kids, a nice gift shop featuring a beaucoup of Arkansas made stuff. Lots of really interesting exhibits.
A Little Rock gem! Go experience a step back in time with cabins and reenactments all in the middle of downtown with restaurants and the River Market within a couple blocks.
This is great for adults, but could use more for kids. It was set up very well, was very informative, and incredibly affordable. In fact, if you go on Sunday, its free.
Really Enjoyed the tour and friendly people
Nice little place. There is 3 buildings to go thru, and a period actor that gives a little talk. Just $2.50 for an adult. Hop on the trolley passing by. $2 for an all day pass. Hear some history and ask questions. Cars go by about every 20 mins
Terrific place. Dont miss 2nd Friday art walk. Great bands every month.
So much fun for the family
Great learning experience for me and our youth.
Absolutely amazing!!
Always a good time. Great art and displays. Free
This historic preservation museum is a rare opportunity to dip into early American--and Arkansas--life and culture!
Being able to get up and touch the historic log cabins was just amazing, its a really great set up.
Small but big variety of items, galleries, and a great tour of grounds. Great price.
Super fun history and art exhibits.
Fabulous, considered, and richly detailed holdings -- everyone will come away fulfilled!
Lots of good history and great exhibits.
