Friendly staff, some great exhibits and great price.

For a university museum, and the fact that the main gallery is free to visit, this is a must see. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly, and parking was free. I was surprised by the broad spectrum of art here. Plenty of contemporary pieces, various American pastoral works, 18th century European portraits, and a hodge-podge of Buddhist/Asian religious statues. Too must to list. Its not an extensive collection, but certainly a surprise.

A great art museum! Very educational - this Art Museum understands thats art should be experienced, but also put in perspective for those who dont I know much about it. There temporary exhibits are always very interesting. Always a stop when Im in the Lawrence area.

Amazing art museum! Some of the best curated exhibits Ive seen in terms of getting you to think deeply about what youre looking at, the context in which youre looking at it, how it relates to other objects, etc. Just really top notch. Made for a very memorable date night.

Situated in a scenic corner of the campus, this museum is home to some 45,000 works of art, which make up a collection larger than that of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in nearby Kansas City. With a collection this vast, you can expect to find some compelling pieces of work here. Galleries have an easy-to-follow flow and feel fresh, but seating is a bit lacking (I dont like to carry a stool around).The first (technically the third) floor is mostly devote to special exhibitions. Unfortunately, it was in the midst of an installation during my visit. The permanent exhibitions on the second (fourth) floor are arranged thematically instead of by geographic areas/time periods seen in most art museums. This is a workable approach but it fails to deliver to me here. In places I feel there is just a mishmash of objects which dont combine to tell a coherent story.But still, I would encourage you to come and draw your own conclusion. This place is free and the staff are friendly. It can be easily incorporated into a visit to the campus and the natural history museum across the street.

The best of Lawrence, along with the public library.Its no Kansas City art museum, sure, but just remember the name, Shimomura.

Art is a relative term. Not everyone has the same tastes. I generally prefer Dogs Playing Poker to what most museums consider art. Still, it may be more to your liking.

Good use of space and fun way to learn more about Kansas through art. It’s worth a quick stop.

The five or six times Ive been there I have always had my worldview reshaped a little by the thought-provoking exhibits. New works from local and alumnus artists are featured in addition to guest artists. This is a quality art museum.

Four stars. Awesome museum but it was humid as a camels third hump. Also artwork seems too crowded. You cant take in one piece without considering the other pieces adjacent.

Our group of kids from 18 to 3 we very entertained! It is small bee had a large variety. We planned 20-40 minutes amd stayed 2 hours! The Bingo amd Scavenger hunts are a must do with kids.

Remarkable art museum, especially for a university art museum. The 20 c and contemporary work they were displaying when I visited were especially nice. Two floors of art and no cafe. The university student union is across the street, with plenty of little places for food and coffee. Also, a parking garage is in easy walking distance.

This place is very cool! Definitely a great place to take your older kids, and fun for you just to check out for something fun to do. Staff was friendly and the displays were awesome!

I absolutely loved all of what I saw. I say this because when I was there floors 2 and 3 were under construction and I wasnt allowed to view them but what I did see was fabulous and if I had the time I could have stayed in there and walked around all day!

Always enjoyable! Ladies at front were very helpful with inquiries. Loved the Botany exhibit. Have visited Spencer for many years and will continue looking forward to a future visit again.

Didnt expect at all such a great and wide display of artworks in Lawrence! A visit thats definitely worth your time and attention. Make sure you visit all of its aisles and dont forget to check the permanent collection!

A superb but somewhat limited art museum with a great variety of artworks. The renovation of the museum has added much to the modernity of the property, bringing it properly into the 21st century. A slight complaint would be that one of the handicapped entrances is located in the back of the building and can be considered peculiar to access. Id advise using the front entrance if you are with a handicapped or elderly individual.

Wonderful place to spend a few hours browsing different art. There are always unique exhibits to enjoy that you will not see in other museums in Kansas. The staff is helpful and friendly and always makes the visit enjoyable to see.

It had interesting exhibits but I didnt like the way different genres were hung in one big room. It didnt seem organized.

So cool, I could spend hours here. Try to go on during an family and kids event weekend. It really brings the museum to life.

For a town of Lawrences size the Spencer is a rare gem. Kansan, American and international art mix in a blend of classic and modern. The exhibits change frequently along with pop ups of student work, I always love swinging by the Spencer with a guest from out of town, or if I need a break from the books.

Really nice, not huge, but a nice size, great art from all periods. I was really impressed by some of the Dutch paintings.

So before we left on sunday, we came to visit this place. the art work is bread taking and they have so much to see, we were sad we could not see everything, we are coming back next time we come to visit.

As a verteran I dont even know what to say anymore about our country. American soldiers are dying everyday overseas to fight for our countries freedoms and rights. Ive served 3 years in Iraq on the front lines and watched young people die for our flag. This makes me sick and very upset. do you people still understand that we have folks overseas still! no beause the media never covers that. We still do fighting for you!!! all of you no matter what skin color or ethnicity.. for you to deface an american flag and fly it high is disgusting.

Very acomodating great drinks

I just got to visit this University Museum for the first time and was impressed. The current show is called Temporal Turn: Art & Speculation in Contemporary Asia. The works were contemplative and beautiful. As well as on a scale I did not expect. Most were commissioned for this show.The permanent collection while close together and almost claustrophobic, boastsart by Georgia OKeefe, Ansel Adams, Louis Jimenez, Andy Warhol and more, as well as works from long ago, and populist art.I could have spent several more hours exploring. If you have time stop by this unique and fascinating Museum.Parking is close by, but does cost. The museum itself is free.

A great museum in the middle of the KU campus, a strong collection of works, great traveling installations (James Turrell) and just renovated.

There are some notable museums in Lawrence, among them KUs Spencer Museum Of Art with its eclectic and impressive collection, including works by Andy Warhol, Angelo Bronzino, Albert Bierstadt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Édouard Manet, Frederick Remington, and John Singer Sargent just to name a few.The museum is not very large, but the building has recently reopened after an extensive renovation. Unlike many museums, the new floor plan lends itself very well to a continuous and simple path on which you can view every piece without having to bounce around from side to side or room to room. The vast majority of the collection is on the second floor.The Spencer lacks many of the more famous artists and some of my favorites, including Rembrandt, Monet, Renoir, Lautrec, VanGogh, PIcasso, and Dali. However, for a rather small museum, the Spencer has an impressive collection and is well worth a visit, particularly considering that entry is free.Having been to some of the worlds greatest museums, including the Louvre, Musée dOrsay and lOrangerie (Paris), the British Museum and Tate Modern (London), the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Guggenheim (NYC), the Vatican Museums, Galleria dellAccademia and Galleria degli Uffizi (Italy), Museo del Prado and Museo Picasso Málaga (Spain), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art to name just a few, I must compare the Spencer to them when considering a rating.
