Love this place! The renovations are coming along beautifully and there is no better place in LVNM to watch the sunset with a glass of wine on the veranda. Love the train tracks too. It truly gives the feel of the old West waiting for a steam engine to come rolling up and all the affluent travelers disembarking for their stay and business here with Billy the Kidd.
I had the glazed chili wings and the Hamburger. Bothell were delicious but a bit pricey. However under the current world circumstances its understandable. The outside atmosphere was great and beautiful. All Covid19 safety precautions were followed by staff and customers alike. Wearing masks when need be never seemed to be an issue which always sets a great and comfortable environment and one can enjoy a delicious meal. Staff were professional and very nice. A great and worthwhile experience.
This is a period hotel, so expect the furnishings predominantly to reflect days gone by. That makes it a must try. However, that being said, our room had blinds instead of drapes which made it a bit too bright for me for a good night’s sleep. A vending machine would have helped to get a bottle of water or soda, or snacks even if I needed to go to the first floor. I suggest taking a small cooler, as there are no small fridges, and the water tastes of chlorine. During the pandemic the restaurant menu is leaning toward more local flare, so no steak or salad choices for a meal. If you want a good chili burger it is there. Town is a bit of a walk, but Charlie’s Spic n’ Span (converted laundry to restaurant), has awesome New Mexican breakfast and lunch. The train ride from Albuquerque to the hotel was an awesome delight.
The rooms and hallways smelled of paint or another strong chemical for our entire stay. (Not COVID disinfectant). I was told there would be a $50 deposit (refundable upon inspection for damage) to have our dog with us plus a $10 per day charge. When we arrived, we were told there was nowhere on the property to walk our dog and that we would have to take her to a park two blocks away. What? “Pet friendly.” I think not.
I was driving to Denver and stopped in Las Vegas, NM for gas but remembered a story about the old Santa Fe Railroad Hotel that had been restored there. I set the GPS for the train station and found the Castañeda Hotel right next door. The lobby is restored and looks good. The kind lady at reception was happy to share the story with me. They started out with just one room and now have about 15 available. Ill stop there next time I drive to Phoenix.
Definitely the best in Las Vegas, so just like their Winslow property, never drive by without stopping for a meal and a drink. Only giving it 4 stars now since C19 put the brakes on full opening, but just wait til it does, ABQ and SF folk will show in force. The Club Sandwich was awesome, one of the best ever, with their trademark quality ingredients.
We tried to stay there two years back during the initial renovation. However after we booked and arrived they said a mistake was made and pushed us downtown. We dropped in this time to see the progress and while much looks wonderful, the desk clerk was gnarly short and no personality rude.. If this is representative of the service we would be exposed to, I have no interest in trying to stay there making up for the last time we tried and, through no fault of ours, were denied.
Werd onna street, and mentioned inna Edible mag, is the potential of their pending food truck. make it happen yall! if Chef Sinclair is involved, itll be radass!
A great dining experience! Every single thing we ordered was amazing, plus we had very attentive service. My only suggest is to wait some 10 minutes before throwing out boxed leftovers which were left behind. Give people a chance to come back for them!
This place blows. The owner is a big headed meanie. I was having lunch and he was micro managing nearly every person in the FOH and it really threw the vibe in the dining room. Food was underwhelming for the price. Although the cocktails were fantastic, give that bartender a raise! I will definitely be returning just to see Andrew.TL:DR skip the food. Hit the bar.
Service, location and food are great! In true NM fashion you can dress up or casual and be fine either way.
I can not say enough amazing things about this place! The rooms are fantastically restored with just enough posh modernism to make your stay relaxing and comfortable. The time and detail Allen and his amazing wife have spent restoring this gorgeous building is clearly evident in the antique furniture places strategically in all the rooms and throughout the building. The bar offers a true libation mixologists that mixes amazing concoctions using only the best ingredients and making most of their own, syrups and add ins. These are truly handcrafted cocktails! In addition they have several domestic beers and imports. Alex the bartender was attentive and professional but most off all he really took the time to find out what each our tastes were to make us the perfect cocktail. I highly recommend a dirty vodka martini (it has a hint of aromatics) and one of their signature drinks; The Judy, just heavenly!Although during our visit the kitchen was not fully functional; the onsite food truck provided, perhaps the best vegetarian tacos I may ever had in my life. The burgers, which my son and boyfriend enjoyed were devoured instantly and both raved about the taste and quality. The beer battered onion rings were scrumptious as well! From start to finish La Castaneda will not disappoint! Catch a train ride next door and visit their other beautifully restore Harvey Hotel, La Posada in Winslow! We can not wait to go back!
The chef made one of the best steaks I have ever eaten. Amazing food. Server was friendly. Manager was attentive. Place was gorgeous. Hidden gem.
Stopped in for a break from the baby and decided to check out this amazing piece of history! Friendly hotel front clerk Sean was helpful to show me the restaurant that has been newly renovated. RaeLynn the waitress showed the greatest if courtesy by letting me know about ways to make my meal pleasant! I had the spaghetti and they were to my liking! Wonderful knowledge on desserts too! I got the Brownie Sundae. Did not disappoint either! I will be back for more! Thank you to the staff for being wonderful
What a fun historic place to visit. The lunch was a little pricey but so delicious
I celebrated my birthday there in January. Food was delicious. Delicious Margarita. The bartender when he found out it was my birthday made me a special drink with a flaming crouton. Wonderful birthday celebration!
Our second stay, more rooms finished now. Room 204 is a delight with antique furnishings, clean and spacious with wood floors. Love the ambiance. The patio dining and bar is a great place to hang out
I was in town with a friend and we stopped in to the bar to check out the hotel. It is still very much under construction but I am looking forward to staying here next time in town. If nothing else just come to the bar and have a drink. You will be amazed.
We had the wedding there. It was beautiful. The dinner outside was wonderful.
This historic landmark has been restored to its former glory after 70 years of neglect. The furnishings are amazing antiques. High ceilings, comfortable beds, and courteous staff.
Very beautiful and historic property. Currently undergoing renovation. Nice bar and restaurant complete. Staff friendly and full of information. Neighborhood is not the best place for an after dinner stroll. Ill reserve final opinion until I visit again.
Beautiful Historic hotel !A step back in time.
Very rude manager and staff. Frequented since they opened, overpriced menu but generally good atmosphere. Handling the reopen very poorly. Told I had to wear mask outside and while I had a drink. When I objected saying it was illogical, and that I would take my business elsewhere, I was asked not to return by a manager not wearing a mask! Sounds like somebody is power-tripping!
The Casteneda is truly a gem. It has been lovingly restored and shines with the perfect blend of its history and modern sensibility. More importantly, to a person the staff is excellent - attentive, knowledgeable, and fun to talk to. The bar and bartender were both fabulous, and the meals put out by Chef Sean Sinclair are equal to (or better than) those you would find in Santa Fe. I cant wait to go back.
The food is good. Small variety but something to suit all. Service is excellent and the wait for food was reasonable. Small dining room gets crowded on Saturday evening. It bit pricey but worth it.
Haunted.....its features on ghost adventures.... used to many things. Home to several spirits
Just drove up from Albq to spend the night in Las Vegas and stay here. Weird times with Covid but this place is a must if you love authentic restoration and people who enjoy taking care of guests. The quietest room in NM. Dog friendly and very laid back.Definitely will plan another extended trip and explore Las vegas...
For now, the dining room bar combination opens at 1500 for dinner: closed on Tuesdays. The food, atmosphere and service are top notch. The oysters Rockefeller at $17.00 are tasty and overpriced. Sharon and I highly recommend this place.
Beautiful hotel, love the history, great staff, stop on by!
Furnishings, art and excellent service. Also beautiful, spacious rooms.
Historic hotel with great service, remodeled where needed for a comfortable stay and great food at the Bar Castaneda! Thanks, Sean, for a great intro to the hotel and checkin. Excited to stay here again!
Great historic hotel opening in the near future.
Beautiful restoration, more like a museum. Open and airy restaurant, per a picture on the wall, the lobby is a very close replica of the original. We were just passing by, looking forward to coming back for a few days - the town has so many interesting things to visit.
Great food and service, absolutely gorgeous place to visit
Very impressed by the food, very good. How beautiful the remodeling is going. What a grand building.
We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary here and its beautiful! Renovations are still under way which makes it even more interesting to visit. You definitely feel the rich history. The desk clerk Sunday night was so enthusiastic about the hotel and shared great stories. The food and atmosphere of the dining room was our favorite in Las Vegss.
Contacting the Castaneda electronically is virtually impossible. Early in January, I sent an e-mail requesting reservation information. After a week without any response, I made a complaining comment on Facebook. I received a response from Allan Affeldt, stating he could not find the previous e-mail and requesting that I resend it. On January 12, I sent him an e-mail at the address he provided. I asked about reservations and whether or not the restaurant was open. The latter question is one Ive been trying to get answered for months without any response. I have received NO RESPONSE to my January 12 message. The management/ownership obviously doesnt care about customer relations. I am now very hesitant about staying at the hotel out of concern that this lack of concern will carry over into actual practice at the hotel itself.
Super friendly and accommodating staff, serving up well-crafted original and classic cocktails in a historic, cozy setting. Food looked delicious, but we didnt eat.
We were very disappointed that we could not eat in the dining room or on the patio as that wasnt open until 3pm.
We went there today expecting a museum, but was told that the historical site is still a hotel as posted on the brick exterior. If you like historical hotels, it is definitely a gem.
Spacious rooms, great helpful staff!
Whats not to like? Its been restored into a former Glory! The staff is kind, attentive and entertaining!
The restoration of the Castaneda has been done very well. We toured the rooms and they were refurbished very nicely. The last time I was in there in the 70s, it actually was a disco at that time. One cant even tell the disco was there. Our party of 7 ate various dishes and everyone was satisfied with the food. The customer service was excellent. If a person isnt interested in the food, I would recommend this place just for the historical aspect.
There chili burger stood up well to be that the chief was recognized for it. It was delicious. The apmespher is comfortable for a building that 8s being restored. It is quit charming.
Best service in town for top shelf scotch. Easy going atmosphere in a historic setting. polite knowledgeable staff highly recommended to any who want a touch of the old west with the convenience and comforts of a modern restaurant and bar.
This is an excellent excellent experience. A lot of work has gone into researching the history of the area and the hotel and the staff is absolutely wonderful. Hope to be back before too long. Thanks for the great service and great experience of staying here.
Looking forward to a stay in the near future. Hope its worth the wait. We have been waiting for decades for this hotel to be restored.
Where parts of the cult-classic, 1984 movie, Red Dawn was filmed. Starring...Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen. (And several other A-list actors and actresses). Not far, from this hotel is Lincoln Park, where the emotional scene, featuring Patrick Swayze carrying his dead brother Charlie Sheen, and then dragging him onto a park bench in Red Dawn, takes place.
Looks fabulous! Cant wait to stay here. We were too early for the restaurant and bar to open but we will be back for sure, so I guess you could say that these 5 stars are in anticipation of greatness.
Food is overpriced, paid $10 for 5 skinny chicken wings; service was mediocre had to wait 15 minutes just to place our order, and had to hunt down server to get flatware and napkins after food was served.
Historic hotel adjacent to the historic station house. Reopened in 2019, everything is brand new inside the rooms but designed with historic luxury in mind.Delicious food, but pricey. We walked to several other local restaurants during our stay.A mile walk to The Plaza Hotel in old town up Bridge Street via NM Highlands University. We visited Sheriff Longmires office building, too.We didnt need a car, but were tired every day from so much walking.Direct Amtrak connection to the other Harvey House in Winslow AZ. We stayed at both, took the train between them.
Great old Harvey House
Unable to leave an adequate review because our reservation was bumped to The Plaza Hotel! Be careful when making a reservation and get assurances that you will be here; otherwise, you will be a mile away with NO transportation in this town. The Meadowlake Van is unreliable; did not answer our calls and did not return phone messages left. We were unable to walk the mile to the Plaza Hotel. We were very disappointed that our reservation was shuttled to another hotel without our consent or knowledge, and then, no transportation there. We arrived by train not by car. Others at the Plaza Hotel relayed the same experiences, also.
Welcome back to the Castaneda. A great place.
I reserved their most expensive room, the King Suite, because my wife and like to have a sitting area separate from the bedroom. Much to our dismay the room had another full size bed instead of a sofa sitting area. The heat wasnt working in our room #216, so they moved us to room #210 which also had a king bed and another full size bed. We were happy to just have heat at that point. I asked about this upon check out and was told they replaced many of the King Suite sitting areas with these extra beds. Well the extra bed was totally useless and in the way, and made the room no better then their less expensive single bed room. Here is the room description on their website The Castaneda King Suite includes 1 King-size bed & Separate Sitting Area located throughout the hotel. Views Vary....We had dinner at the bar/restaurant and were disappointed. My wife had a cauliflower pasta and I had a stuffed pepper... a handful of pasta for her and a small pepper me. No accompanying items, no bread, no salad, just a tiny portion for about 20 bucks each. With two drinks and a tip...$70 for two We found it humorous reflecting on the Fred Harvey mission statement and meals that were served there in the early 1900s. And certainly not up to what we have come to expect from the Range. We enjoyed the hotel stay despite being uncomfortable with our room(s) and feeling a bit ripped off. The renovation work is well done and it is a beautiful place inside. The staff was friendly and accommodating. I really enjoyed the artwork of Tina Mion.
They like to call the police on people taking pictures.
Restored Harvey Hotel. Historic setting and an upscale, but casual dining room and bar. The green chile burger won the New Mexico smackdown in 2019. Kids menu, good beer list and interesting cocktails.
I loved my first dining experience at Bar Castañeda. The craft cocktail menu rivals any big city trendy establishment (I live in Seattle and would gladly put their drink list against any of our top local places!) and the quinoa relleno.... delicious! Kudos to the staff for creating such a unique environment, full of charm, history and great food and drink!
My husband and I stayed here while we were visiting his dad. The hotel has a lot of charm and character. It’s a 2 storey building. Downstairs is the reception, a bar and a restaurant. Upstairs are all the rooms. There were 16 rooms each with its own name. We were in room 216 called Dragonfly. Our room is beautiful. It has a twin bed and a king bed. The furnishings are all vintage and very charming. The bed is comfortable and the bathroom so pretty. I gave them 3 stars because the room was so cold. The thermostat wasn’t working no matter how we adjust it. The temperature remained to be at 63F, even if we already asked for help. With that kind of hotel, it would have been nice if there was a phone in the room because my husband and I woke up at 3am-ish because it was too cold. He had to go down to get help. The guy who was on shift that night brought up a heater which wasn’t of much help. When we reported the issue the following morning while checking out, we were told that we were not the only one’s who complained about the cold rooms. I hope they fix the issue and maybe I’d stay there again.
Great place if you like history. Still remodeling but you can eat and stay in rooms. Fees are good.
The hotel was not open to regular visitors just guests. And the restaurant was open Thursday Friday Saturday something like that.
A great place to take that special someone. I really like the environment of the dining room, and the food is really good.
Great to see it finally restored. Enjoyed our stay in this historic gem.
Very good food with good choices for vegetarian and gf. Lesley our waitress was very thoughtful. We’ll come back!
It is beautiful and tastefully done. The restaurant bar was ok. It’s food was great. This will be our new place to stay on our vacation west
I will be getting married there next year. Cant wait to see this place fully renovated because its looking great already.
We didn’t stay at the hotel but enjoyed the bar and renovation. If we ever are in Las Vegas again we’d definitely stay here!
Incredible the architecture & the different styles of tin roof used in the lobby... very impressive & the people are very friendly
Awesome place. Food was amazing. Chef Jake was friendly and his food was delicious. Chef Sean super friendly and is kicking butt Once this place has been fully restored its going to be the jewel of this area.
The building and restaurant alone are plenty of reason to come and enjoy the experience.
Not ready for prime time yet. Only the bar is open for dinner. Dining Room has not opened. Overnight guests in 16 rooms but opening more soon. Not as grandiose as la Posada.
The original Harvey House, its being restored to its former glory. One wing of rooms is open for business as well as the bar. Right now, food can be had from their food truck. The restaurant will be open in the next couple of weeks, and the bar will serve meals from the restaurant kitchen, too.
Love this place, ill be back soon
It was a delight to see this fine building taken in hand and restored to its former glory, a least a good start. Be sure to see this hotel from its front, as seen from RR tracks...
Friendly staff, comfortable room, and great food, what more could you ask for?
Another restored Harvey hotel owned by the same people who have La Posada in Winslow, AZ. They have done a beautiful job of restoring this grand dame. Im still partial to La Posada. There is great bar and dining area that allows you to look over the tracks and the trains rumbling by. If pass by this is worth a visit, even if it just to stop for a drink or snack. Dont let the neighborhood scare you :)
Food was great and our server was awesome
Was on a tour of this magnificent historical hotel. Worth a visit. Some rooms available. Restaurant and bar on premises. Beautiful renovations ongoing.
Outstanding food and drink selection, stunning renovation of a building with rich history! So happy to see this building brought back to life
Worked there back in the early 70s as a dishwasher and helped the chef setup his plates.
We had a party there. Very nice personal work there.
Great food!! Very fancy and delicious drinks. A wonderful, historic stop!!
Historic hotel the renovation was great for this place, everyone should stop and check out how it came out.
Love this restored Harvey House. Room is modern luxury, building is an amazing testament to rail travel in prior century.
Great food, quiet venue, excellent service
This place is cool! Stay here if you can!
Went up to Las Vegas, NM to have lunch with a relative. Should have checked their luncheon hours. THERE ARE NONE. ONLY OPENED FOR DINNER. It never occurred to us they wouldnt be serving lunch. Looking forward to visiting when they are open all times.
Superb food for a small town. Staff are very friendly and professional.
Awesome food
Amazing renovations. The rooms look beautiful and staff is attentive.
A step back into the past. They are doing a remarkable job of restoration.
Stopped by on my rt66 trip. Loved it
Great service and comfortable rooms
Spectacular cocktails by Juan. Delicious appetizers at the bar or at table. If youre lucky you get a tour of this grand and historic reborn hotel!!
This hotel was built in the 1880s, or there about. After many years of unuse it is being painstakingly and faithfully restored. It has a small number of rooms and an excellent bar that opens at 3pm. If you enjoy history, antiques, architecture, or railroad lore the Castaneda Hotel is time well spent.
The hotel is under construction, but still has a long way to go. Our room was not fully furnished (bare walls and no curtains). The whole place smelled like fresh paint and construction started shortly after 8:00. I recommend waiting 6-12 months for them to finish construction and staying at the Plaza Hotel in the meantime.
