What an awesome place! So neat to actually be immersed in every aspect of this ship. Staff is so polite. We even had a paranormal experience if youre one to believe in those things. Its not advertised as paranormal, but if youre sensitive to those things, then be prepared. My 2 year old and I were walking the lower deck to which she pointed in an empty direction and said boy we walked towards the direction and she said where did he go? I said I dont know...where did he go? It sounded like a metal door slammed shut and I turned a corner and there was a metal door but it was completely locked up. Then I asked her one more time where he was....and she pointed at the locked door. Super chilling but so awesome to experience. They keep everything true to its time period.
A piece of history lost to time and looking for a home. This destroyer really gives a feel for just how small these ships were. Shes in need of repairs and some TLC, but without a permanent home those working on her are hard pressed. Would have loved to take the hours needed to crawl through her decks.
We were there after Christmas 2019 and had drove down from Ft Polk after visiting our son. Had a great visit, for not being open the day the day ahead Christmas. The gentleman who was there was doing maintenance work and hadnt planned on being open that day but let its come aboard. Had a great time and a great guide. Being from Kansas I dont think I had ever been on a destroyer or really any other naval vessel like that. Had a great time myself and family and would go back. Good Luck in finding a permanent home for the USS Orleck.
Amazing!!! Highly recommend taking the time to visit and taking a tour. We had the privilege of getting a personal and in depth tour with real life war veteran Steve Davis that spent time on the USS ORLECK when it was active. Steve spent the time to share stories and interesting facts. Too much to see and we will be revisiting.
So much history. Very hot in the summer but so worth it. Not very expensive.
Great tripThe volunteers were soo greatA must go trip if you ever come to lake CharlesI wish they could save this ship from being scrapped.
Its a classic and historical old destroyer. The admission comes with the tour and museum. Make sure you save at least an hour an hour and a half to kind of walk around and look at stuff.
Had a great time tour was awesome
Awesome tour and very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Definitely recommend going to tour this ship
Great tour! However they have some work to do before overnight groups are allowed.
Loved visiting there was a gentleman who works there he took the time to tell us all about the ship even though he didnt have to thanks so much
Just to cool ! Enjoyed the tour & guide was very informative. Great time !
Very nice and impressive experience. Explanations of the guide on the ship are detailed and rich. We saw all the rooms of the ship, usually on this type of museum we dont have that chance.
Great place to learn about some history, lots of stuff to check out, nooks and crannys everywhere. A little cluttered with non relative stuff, but still pretty cool to check out. Make yourself known at all times, I almost got locked in the SIROC compartment, (otherwise 5 star) though I was there all day, until closing.. lost track of time, so partially my fault, but still.. glad I banged on the window..
If you like ships, and history then you will like this place. Its for all ages!
This is a very interesting tour, you can get into almost every room of the destroyer, touch, watch and feel the smell of the history. We did the tour with Director Ron, who was extremely nice and had a lot of patience while I translated to the ones didnt speak English. People should promote others to visit so the organization keep restoring the destroyer. It would be amazing to have the museum at the main lake. Thank you Ron.
We had a blast! We were the first ones there. As our tour guide turned on the lights we followed and listened to the history.A little hidden gem!
Really fun tour, and you get to see everything, including where the weapons room was, crew and officers quarters, and can wonder through the whole ship
Something you must see. These will soon be a thing of the past. It was like walking through time
Can anyone give me more info about the lazer tag games they hold? Anyone know anything about that? Trying to take my kids!
Ron was our tour guide and he was awesome.
Great museum. To all my fellow sailors God bless.
May very well be a nice place but my party and I went to the grounds and left. It wasnt very inviting and a little scary for a couple women with just us and our kiddos. One sign that said the name but you pull in and nothing else at all, you wonder if your in the right place and we left because it felt more like we were trespassing. Shame, it could of been a great adventure if it was more welcoming.
You can touch anythink
Awesome experience. The tour was extremely informative and enjoyable. The ship is being worked on and theyre trying very hard to make this a well preserved monument. I would highly recommend it to anyone and come enjoy some naval history aboard a very storied vessel.
My 12 yo asked to participate in laser tag for his birthday. A quick google search brought up the USS Orleck. I am so happy it did! He had a blast along with my 8 yo son and 8 friends and family ranging in ages from 8-14. Laser tag is on 2 levels of the ship. I highly recommend for the area. I actually wouldnt mind going back with a group of adults!
A lot of fun.
Very great experience
My oldest son was very interested in learning all about the USS ORLECK.
Thorough information, very interesting. Friendly staff. Recommend going.
Very neat and interesting. Was pleased with the experience. Everyone was friendly and informative.
This was a very neat place. But i promise if you arent looking for it you will not find it. And if you are going to go go early in the morning due to it bring open and very hot. I wish the city of lake Charles would take pride in it and fix it and move it closer to town so people can see it!
I love this organization. Go tour the ship or have a laser tag party!
They have a up close and in depth tour, that brings you into the life of the sailors on board!
In a rough area of town but they do a good job on the tour. I wish the local community would better support this great attraction. It would serve our younger generations well to remember what has been done for them.
If you have any love of our military and Navy, this is a must see. A Navy ship with great history. Its mostly a self guided tour, but I liked it. Lots of great picture taking options.
After driving over the pot holes, next to the port a potty, we admired the garbage dump smell. Had to walk across a rusted barge to get to the ship. The ship was in terrible disarray with obvious signs of people living on it. Once we found the office in the middle of the ship. We checked in. If we hadn’t already bought our tickets thru Groupon, we would have left. It was a disgrace.
Great staff very informative on history. enjoyed and would recommend
History.. worth a stop in and check it out.
Great Tour! A must see if youre in the area or passing through.
Was real nice really cool things to see
Really enjoyed our guides. I wish I had by myself instead of on a limited field trip
A gem of a ship. Little hard to find. Just board the vessel, head inside, take the first right and be greeted by the friendly maintainers of a piece of US Navy history.
A historical Gem!! Awesomely kept by volunteers!!! A must visit!!
Had fun exploring the ship . I was very sorry to hear that they may not have a place to dock the ship soon .
Really awesome place to visit! Tour guide was very helpful and knowledgeable. An amazing was too look at some history!!
It was a very great experience to visit a WW2 naval warship
Very interesting tour of a ship. The tour guides are knowledgeable and friendly.
Good to see this great ship! But sad to see her condition.
Very cool visit. Ship in disrepair. They need help through donations.
Best haunted thing to do around lake charles for halloween. On regular days the rest of the year it is awesome to visit and learn
This is a great place to see. The tour guide is included in the price. David our guide was very informative!
Still doing a lot of work to turn it into a museum ship, but my son enjoyed it.
Did get to go in it. It was closed.
Very interesting location a little off
Guided tour by a very knowledgeable and friendly gentlemen. If your in the area go check it out its worth it.
Great place to explore history. Tour vide was great, good us all about the parts of the ship.
You probably wont find this attraction unless youre looking for it, but its worth checking out. The tour guide was very helpful and there were lots of neat things to see and hear about.
Best thing to see in Lake Charles. Worth every penny and more.
