To memorialize the 50th anniversary of the first American Protestant mission in Lahaina, a banyan tree seedling was planted on April 24, 1873 in the courthouse square by sheriff William Owen Smith, who had received it as a gift from missionaries in India. The banyan, native to India, is one of 60 types of fig tree in the Hawaiian islands.The seedling was approximately 8 feet (2.4 m) high when it was planted; by 2005 it had grown to a height of 49.2 feet (15.0 m), had 16 trunks, and covered a circumference of 0.25 miles (0.40 km) within 0.66 acres (0.27 ha) of the park.It is currently the largest banyan tree in Hawaii, and one of the largest banyan trees in the United States.

The banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) known in Hawaiian as paniana, located in the Courthouse Square, which was renamed Banyan Tree Park covering 1.94 acres, is not only the largest in the state but also in the United States.The tree was a gift from missionaries in India. A mere 8 feet (2.4 m) when planted, it has grown to a height of about 60 feet (18 m) and has rooted into 16 major trunks, apart from the main trunk, with the canopy spread over an area of about 0.66 acres (0.27 ha).

Beautiful piece of nature and with so much history behind it. You have to spend some time reading everything on the little museum next door. Take some lunch and enjoy it in the various benches below the Banyan tree, many coffee, dessert, and cold refreshments around the area.

Also has a visitors center, restrooms, and many awesome mini exhibits about traditional Hawaiian life. A great spot for a quick walk through.

Place is great to walk around and enjoy the beauty of nature.While you are there please be polite and don’t be climbing up the tree or hanging from anywhere. Lots of shopping to do around, restaurants and bars too. Nice place to hangout and just breath or read a book.

Amazing design by truly one of the worlds best artists. Throughly enjoyed ourselves walking through the gallery and seeing the level of intricate detail on all the sculptures and furniture.

Another magnificent tourist attraction in the downtown. The Magnificent large Banyan tree with innumerable branches spread over a vast area gives a celubrious atmosphere to sit and enjoy the Serene climate. The hot sun is stopped with its sunny effect once you walk into the umbrella of Great Banyan tree.A lovely place for romantic couples to take as many pictures as they like uninterrupted and spend the moments of Joy to cherish for ever.Equally a place for family and friends to laze around munching on what they like.

This is an amazing example of massive single Banyan tree, covers an entire city block with interconnected trunks, great shade, benches and right across from the water on one side and restaurants and shops on the other. Just a great place to sit and relax, enjoy singe shade and a very interesting tree, was one stop during our island tour.

Definitely worth visiting if you are interested.

The Banyon tree is absolutely amazing. The most amazing tree I have ever seen and Ive been to the redwood forest. A single tree covers the entire park of almost 2 acres!!

The art gallery guy was a pompous jerk. Performs a very obvious, condesending once over to determine, in his view, if you have $$ to spend... if he thinks not, turns his nose up. I was considering buying a piece for my wife - not after that.
