Truly enjoyed the Vermilionville Historic Village. You will miss out if you dont take the time to engage with the reenactors. They are absolutely amazing people. Ask Kevin, the gentleman in the schoolhouse to sing and play his accordion. Youll be amazed at the many historical styles hes able to play. Austin, the blacksmith is like your favorite history professor. His stories captivated my family for two hours! His smithing skills were excellent, too. Mike tends to the animals and has fun stories about his hennie. Ask him, if you dont know already what one is. Chief, the gentleman in a coonskin cap, was doing some interesting bead work. The historic building are nice to see but its the people who make it amazing. And we cant leave out the food. Dont leave without trying the chicken and sausage gumbo. You will thank me for the recommendation.

We had an excellent visit yesterday. We spent the entire day there. The re-enactors are very knowledgeable and interesting. We learned a lot about Louisianas culture and history at large and also got deep insights about the mississippi flood issues by discussing with them. The village houses are well displayed and furnished. Last but not least, the on-site restaurant is both delicious and amazingly inexpensive. A must-do visit!

Vermillionville in Lafayette is an extensive historic village with buildings dating back to colonial times. The visit is made significantly more lively by having staff (mostly somewhat senior) dressed up in historic costume and willing to talk about what they were doing in their role. Also very nice that there was southern music being performed in a larger farmhouse. You can also eat comfort food in the associated restaurant. Very nice way to kill some time in Lafayette.

The magic in the air here is rich and old. The muddy waters of the Vermillion River are haunting and peaceful. There is plenty of parking here and you can quickly escape the city and feel transported to the bayou. I would recommend taking a picnic lunch and sit outside enjoying this peaceful setting. A very cool place worth visiting.

This place was wonderful. We learned quite a bit about Louisiana history. There is plenty to read but most of our information came from talking with the people there. With the exception of two ladies, everyone there seemed to want to engage and tell us about the houses, the people, and give us tons of background information. We really enjoyed ourselves!

Several helpful people in historic costume dress with knowledge and expertise in different aspects of traditional Cajun life. Well-kept and informative exhibits spanning more than a century. My whole family enjoyed this place. Very knowledgeable staff. They encouraged and welcomed questions and had patience with young children. Great gift shop. Clean bathrooms.***I really feel the need to add this in here because what might seem unimportant to some, was MUCH appreciated by us. The water fountain had a separate spot so you can refill your water bottle...for FREE! You do have the option to buy bottled water and then refill it for free or refill whatever bottle you brought with you. My daughter has hydration issues and having this option was wonderful. I wish I had learned about this place earlier in the day so that we could have spent more time here. On Saturdays they have a Cajun jam which consists of a group of musicians of all ages coming together and playing traditional songs. It is free and a real treat. In addition they had a cooking class the day we visited where they were showing how to make corn and crab stew. We missed this but would love to take a class here.Around Vermillionville there are a lot of other building and reinactors.who are living as they would have when the village was founded. You can also stop in at Mamas to get some great food. We had the chicken and sausage gumbo which we understand from our guide is made in a very traditional style. It tasted great and I would love to try their whole buffet.

This is a perfect family place, but you do not need kids to have a reason to go. Just go!We started off our tour in the beautiful, restored barn. There was a fantastic zydeco band playing music and the wood dance floor held some really impressive dancers. The tour of the homes, black smithery, and gardens were like taking a step back in time. Theres even a cute ferry that you can hand pull with a rope across Petit Bayou. The whole family got a kick out of that.I highly recommend Vermilionville as it was one of the high points of our great trip to Lafayette.

A fun time. Make sure to go early so you have time to see everything. When they close they are closed. Houses get locked up and interpretive staff leave. If you really want to take the yime to absorb everything, make sure to have at least an hour and a half. But it is worth the time. Even if you have done other living history locations dealing with the same time period, this location layers over the unique cultures and traditions of the area.

There were actors and actresses in costume who told us all about the time period and explained what certain items and tools were used for and how they were used. This place was awesome! I came here as a child in grammar school on a field trip and remembered it well. But, when I came back here this time it was a whole different experience. Maybe, because of the age gap, or it was just the excitement but I had a way better time then I could have ever imagined. The folks here were so informative; from village house to village house of every aspect of the history of the dwelling that I was in was explained in detail literally just blown away. I would suggest anyone who is curious to dive into: Creole, Cajun or Native American culture should visit this place. it is extremely educational and informative as to history here in the Louisiana South and how it came to be. Your children will love it!!! I was raised here in Louisiana and most of the things I learned were stuff I never heard of my whole life and I was very greatful. The chance to experience and learn these things they had to tell. They do a thorough and excellent job! Every question we had was answered and then some. Plus they have a restaurant here which served probably the best gumbo Ive ever had in my life and like I said I was raised here in Louisiana so I know gumbo or as well as I know it, LOL. But seriously the best! The whole experience between the village and the houses to the restaurant with the food to the live Zydeco band they had playing that day, it was phenomenal. And it only cost $20 that is the main aspect of this $20 for a phenomenal, educational, fun and all out great experience you wont get anywhere else and I promise that!

We dont think about what life was like when metal items had to be forged and we washed close in a bucket and was a process. Each person contributed to society. This time capsule town is a great visiting place to unplug and be reminded of that time. I dont know how I missed that there is weekly live music and dancing here. I will be visiting more frequently now.
