I have lived in this town for the last 50 years. Never been to the hixton house but I had a group from Argentina with me and thought it might be interesting. The tour of the old house was very nice, I love this kind of stuff though and some of the features from that time a hundred years ago were very interesting. The guide was knowledgeable and went through the place with answering questions as we asked them. Well worth your time and the few dollars they charge to get in.

Did this on a rainy day. Don’t make the same mistake. The hour guide didn’t know her stuff and she made no fewer than 2 racist comments. The house is sad and the restoration incomplete.

Guide told a lot of useless stories, its neat to hear some history, but Im sure you dont want to hear about someones 2nd cousin removed from the first marriage and how they liked to garden some flowers, but only after she was 60 years old yada yada. Some very neat things to see and it is an impressive house, but they feel they need to take 1-2 hours for the tour so you get your $10 worth of useless stories.

This was a waste of two hours!! The guide of the tour spent most of the time telling pointless stories. She was mildly racist. The visitors center was in such disarray that I thought they were still closed. They were in the process of getting the exterior paint during operating hours. They do not have a working credit card reader.

This place is a sleeping gem. Outside it looks very humble, but inside is a step back in time that is fantastic. The volunteers that work there are so knowledgeable about the history of the Hixon family and the history of La Crosse. Worth the time and money.

Definitely worth taking a tour!
