Easy, pleasant stroll on concrete path and boardwalk through sandy scrub and pond cypress swamp to an observation deck at the mangrove lined bank of Jones Creek. This path is user friendly for walkers and wheelchairs. We observed several gopher tortoise burrows and paths, as well as a young tortoise feeding near its burrow. We also saw a large stick insect. Plenty of photographic opportunities for those who appreciate native wildflowers, bushes, and trees. The only drawback is the constant drone from cars on Indiantown Rd, but dont let that deter you from experiencing this precious snapshot of what the entire area once was like.
This was a peaceful way to start the new year. The weather was perfect and I had an enjoyable stroll through the 16 acre natural area. The parking lot is small but since I was the only person there it wasnt problem. Jupiter acquired this land in 2005. The preserve is gated to protect the endangered gopher tortoises who reside inside. Most of the preserve is paved before meeting with a 300 foot wooden boardwalk. There is also a sandy trail that goes through the scrub. The trail takes you to an observation platform over Jones Creek which runs off the Loxahatchhe River. You could see wading birds in the mangroves lining the creek bank. Besides the gopher tortoises other animals that have been recorded here are the little blue heron, eastern diamond-backed rattlesnake, wood stork, and bald eagle. Plants that have been found are the common wild pine, giant wild pine, butterfly orchid, and large flowered rosemary. Five acres of invasive plants have been removed. In addition to the scrub ecosystem there are six other ecosystems present including a tidal marsh and mangrove swamp. Delaware Scrub is just one of eight natural areas in close proximity. If you happen to be in the area this is a easy way to get in some fresh air and exercise without too much exertion. It is especially worth paying a visit when the weather is colder as manatees have been spotted in Jones Creek.
Nice place to walk, relax and take some pictures.
This is a really beautiful little park you would never even know was here. With the massive cypress trees and wonderful wildlife your completely transported back into old Florida.
The natural area is well maintained and has a gorgeous breeze on the dock off the river. However I believe this place has more better potential to be a longer hike. Maybe create a path further down the river. Although a short hike it was nice to visit
Whats there is nice, but its a smaller area, short walk through. Traffic noise is prevent on the nature trail. However the area does support gopher tortoises.
Trail close to waterway but if kayaking it is a ways to the launch point from parking lot. Cool place for small kids
Only a few of these little parks left, good little walk with some local wildlife
Had a blast but needs bathroom and trash can waterfountian
A nice place to park and kill some time. Avoid during mosquito season
Fun quick romp through nature, but not an appealing visual experience unless youre gaga about green and brown.
Small-scale for turtles but nice
As usual pets are not allowed
It is not very interesting and not kept up
Soothing and relaxing !!
Beautiful
