Site includes separate trail for hiking or for cycling with a lot of historical content. Great for those who love history or even apocalyptic-style settings. Not recommended for real young children or for people touring alone.

Historical and well labeled. Im not entirely sure why they havent put more effort into building out some more historical aspects of the iron works like the furnaces. I can see this being a well visited field trip location.

The Joliet Iron Works Historic Site was a great place to check out whether you like nature or history. It was very interesting seeing the sites where all the buildings once stood and reading the information signs set up along the trail.

The path next to the ruined sites is really well taken care of. So walking, running, and biking is a breeze. But please make sure to stop and take a look at the ruins. Theres plenty of info on what happened here and its worth reading and appreciating the history of Joliet.

Fun place to visit and photograph. Plenty of free parking, restrooms in the summer months. See it all in a couple of hours, or spend time to explore and spend the day. Caverns, tunnels, ruins, ramps, arches and more.

While the fall setting might be a distraction for some, there was so much to see. Prarie grasses and native grasslands abounding. Foundry remains with walkways and placards describing foundry times made the walk informative to the history buffs and fun with the finely graveled path. Route markers abounded on the clearly marked trails.Bike trails looked very inviting and well-maintained. Most of the foundry trip highlights were the bricked smelting type areas that remained from the past . The rusted landscaped buildings were fenced off ( probable because of the spray paint afficianados who should be,,,, ) because of all the spray cans tossed on the sides of the rail tracks. The rusted landscapes make for interesting backdrops for the photographer. A beautifully maintained grass on the sidewalk path with natural foliage alongside made for a burr free walk.I liked the placards and the wide path for walking . There are also portapots at the beginning of the walkways.

You should not think that visiting an abandoned ruin of Joliet Iron work would be so interesting. It is sure worth visit as you will learn a lot just by walking on the path with all the information boards. You will see many kind of birds while youre walking on this area. Its a nice trail and at some areas you will learn about the year of all invention on the path where you walk on. Free of charge.

Review №40

Excellent fun place. We had the entire park to ourselves, which made exploring the ruins of this piece of history even more fun. Really great educational plaques made it cool to have our own self-guided tour. Not a great place for little little kids, as there were temptations at each turn to wander off the path in to some fairly rough broken concrete areas. Based on the occasional profusion of empties and cigarette butts, I would not recommend going after dark.

Really neat place to explore some local history. The remnants of all the old buildings are still there and theres a bunch of placards with some cool facts. Also is a great place to take photographs, especially if youre looking for an abandoned/desolate feel. It is almost in the middle of downtown Joliet so theres plenty of places to stop and eat or get a drink nearby.

I just stumbled across this taking a bike ride along the canal path with my family on our weekly exploratory bike ride. Last week we headed towards Lemont along the Canal path, this week we found this place! What a cool place to see. My wife and I absolutely love history and we are trying to get our 5 year old into it also. He dug it big time. He thought it was so cool to see all the old materials and where the big ovens used to be. I only regret not bringing my camera on the bike ride that day! I am a photographer so expect some good photos to be added to this review at some point!

I have been wanting to go explore this place for a few years now. It was not as exciting as I hoped. There are lots of signs telling you not to explore the ruins. Youre supposed to only view them from the sidewalk but no one listens. The good thing about this place is that its not covered in graffiti. There are well posted signs along the way to scribing what each section was. If you are in the area and have some time to waste or want to have a quick walk it is worth it. But otherwise, its not worth the drive.
