This Smithsonian Affiliate is a pleasant surprise find! We have been to Kennedy Space Center, The Air and Space Museum and White Sands Astronaut Museum, but we still new things! I loved seeing the restored Liberty Bell capsule and the restored Odyssey capsule of Apollo 13 and being under a launch pad for a Gemini Titan rocket! My husband learned so much more about the Soviet space program. There is a lot packed into this museum so plan 1/2 to a full day depending on the attention span of your party.
This is truly a treasure of space exploration history. I am so glad to have such a facility here in Kansas. Its amazing how technology has advanced and expanded over the years. Definitely worth visiting. Be sure to take your time as there is a wealth of information available
Oh my gosh - best, most interesting space and rocket museum ever! I took my 11 year old son there because he is interested in rockets but I was fascinated too. The exhibits are very well-done. Great way to learn some U.S. history within the context of the U.S. space programs.
Amazing place to visit with my children! So much to see and do there. Astronauts, jets, and german holocaust remembrance. We were completely fascinated the whole time. The gift shop has cool stuff too
I have been here as a youth a few times, an adolescent, and now as an adult. I have always been fascinated with science and have only grown in my appreciation of the sciences involved with space exploration. The Cosmophere has wonderful directors and teachers to instruct youth in their learning and helps inspire them to wonder while having fun. Amazing.
My grandson and I left for a little trip to the cosmosphere yesterday and found the doors were locked. Did not know that you werent open on Mondays and Tuesdays. But today oh boy as soon as that door opened my grandson was jumping around so excited.! He gives a thumbs up to the men in the plane in the lobby and said goodbye to everyone in space suits whether they had a head or not! We had a wonderful experience thank you very much.
Great place to go. A wealth of fascinating information to absorb. Great facility to move around in while looking at displays, watch shows, a live demonstration, childrens area and more. Plan to stay awhile. Clean and very nicely designed! I thought the entrance fee was very reasonable for all you get. Good parking.
This is an all day - or two day - place. Its better than the Houston Space Center, almost as impressive as the Kennedy Space Center, and on par with Infinity in Mississippi. I was shocked. If you buy the All-Access pass you see a 40+ minute movie, a neat live science presentation, and a planetarium presentation - each lasts basically an hour all-told. Then theres the actual exhibits - arranged like IKEA. Not an inch of this two-story facility is wasted. Theres an insane amount of fantastic things to see, all with excellent signage (if you read everything this is a two day experience), amazing original NASA / space program artifacts and many exhibits. I thought 6 hours would be enough. I was completely mistaken: I completely blew through 50% of the exhibits, not even reading the identification plate in front of what surely were items worth 5 minutes each.
One of my absolute favorite places to visit. Its a bit in the middle of no where but their exhibits are world class and include incredible artifacts such as the real Apollo 13 capsule. An absolute must if you are in Kansas and enjoy aerospace/history.
One of the best museums Ive ever been to. Came here several times over the years. A huge selection of artifacts to look at and a massive museum with great displays in the basement. I heard this museum is well known around the country as it has many of the real artifacts whereas most other museums of this kind has only props. Theyve since remodeled the museum in the basement after I was here last, which makes me want to visit it again to see whats changed and on display now.
If you like planes and space travel it is a must, the only down part was the planetarium was directed at us like we were about 7 years old
Spent 5 hours here and it definitely wasnt enough time. This place was so cool for so many reasons, and I loved the entire vibe of the place. They have The Liberty Bell 7 currently on display, as well as The Odyssey space capsule!!
Its a awesome place. Very friendly people. Movies are reasonably priced.
Its a world-class aerospace museum! It is well worth the investment in time and energy to arrange a visit.
Really wonderful place for kids to explore a lot about space.
I truly have mixed feelings about the Cosmosphere. There are a lot of really cool space relics here, including the fully reconstructed Apollo 13 capsule that was painstakingly pulled from the ocean floor and put back together in Hutchinson. A person could easily spend 3-4 hours wandering through and learning a great deal of history about the space race.Where they lose a star is overall maintenance. There are some exhibits where stuff is missing and others where the video no longer shows, audio that goes with video cannot be heard, etc. This museum could truly be an epic experience, but the run-down condition of some exhibits detracts from how special this place really is.
Very cool. Has an incredible collection. Definitely appeals to space and history nuts most. Drove 3 hours to get here but worth the trip. Lot of things to read though...started skimming about half way through.
Awesome place enjoyed seeing all the exhibits etc
If you are a space enthusiast this visit is a must see. You can really get up close and inspect some fantastic NASA Apollo and Gemini era capsules. The Russian stuff is amazing too. You can really get a feel for how small the interior of the lunar lander was. You can compare the huge full size lander with the close up interior and get a real feel for how small it was.
This is a must visit place when travelling in and around Wichita. There is not much parking space so we had to park on the road side beside some residences. This space museum is quite frank in its narrative in that there are several displays that admit the Americans were out-smarted and taken by surprise when the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite and sent the first man into space. There are several models and original equipment on display which are related to space exploration, a great place to visit with family and friends.️ This place has:Yes=Ramp access.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Entrance.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Restroom/Toilet.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Seating.Yes=A wheelchair-accessible Parking.
The museum is well organized, starting at the beginning before the space race, and continuing on in a logical manner. I learned so many interesting things, such as each of the million honeycombs in the heat shield on the bottom of the original Apollo XIII command module on display were all hand injected with ablative material. If youre interested in space history, you can easily spend a whole day here.
I took my granddaughters, ages 7&3, we spent all day and had an amazing experience. The staff was friendly and helpful. I noticed that all of the other patrons were wearing masks.
Incredible Areospace & Space museum in the middle of Kansas! Great film screenings.
Great space museum. My kids enjoy the shows they have there.
So many historic space exhibits. Highly recommend for space and history enthusiasts
Its awsome Im one of the scouts that spent the night there it was awsome I set up a tent ran with my freinds it was the best night of my life
Could spend all day here... so much to see.AND they have the original APOLLO 13 capsule!
Definitely worth the detour south from our planned route along I-70 back home to Colorado. This was our first visit, and we were pleasantly surprised by the number and quality of the exhibits. The exhibit descriptions really helped to put our space program into historical perspective, in a fun and interesting way. I just wish wed had more time to take it all in. Plan on at least three hours. Pro tip: if you have a membership to a major science museum, you can probably use it to get in for free here, as the Cosmosphere participates in a reciprocal membership program.
This place has amazing space exploration artifacts and models. You can learn tons from this wonderful museum and planetarium!
Lots of authentic artifacts of space flight from both the US and Russia. The museum begins at the dawn of rocket flight after world war 1, all the way up to modern day space endeavors. The museum has elevators and is wheelchair and stroller friendly.
Great history of the U.S. Space program, did not have enough time for the whole experience, plan on going back!!!
Great time havent been there for awhile. Every time we always something new.
Really a great place to go to whether you are the patriot that wants to see the accomplishments of our nation, the historian to see the early steps into space, just a fan of science and exploration the Cosmosphere has it all.
I LOVE this place!! Filled with incredible history from the inception of the rocket in WWII to what space exploration is now. Amazing displays, actual artifacts and great readings to go along with it all. I highly recommend giving yourself 3 hours minimum to go thru just the museum alone. That doesnt include the movies and simulator. Im in awe this place even has the last 2 panels of wall taken down between East and West Germany. This is a gem for Hutchinson and Kansas overall.
Excellent museum, just as fun as the first time I went as a kid. My daughter had a blast!
Such a fun experience! They have lots of fun information about the space program. Our presenter for the science show and the planetarium were informative and very energetic.
It was great. Really immersive and yet breif and comprehensive information from the birth of rocket science to late and modern space travel/science.Easily worth the price of admition and then some.
Love this place! Always so much to see and learn.
All kinds of awesome things to see. We went when some of it was closed, but the space artifacts were accessible. Theres lots to see and learn about. They have the odyssey space capsule. That was enough for me to give them 5 stars.
Great museum full of great space facts and knowledge I really suggest going we can go again and again and always find something new.
The best experience I ever had and my kids stayed interested as well. Very educational and experiments at Dr. Goddards lab and for 2 adults and 1 senior and 1 child it only cost 103.00 and they also have places to eat if your hungry!!
The Cosmosphere is an amazing resource. Great camps, exhibits, movies, and more!
An AMAZING Attraction Hidden In the Middle of Kansas EVERYONE Should Visit.Plan to spend your whole day inside a labyrinth of authentic, incredible, and historic space artifacts. The Cosmosphere has a lot to offer and I recommend getting the pass/ticket that gets you everything because everything is cool, fun, and informative for all ages--young to old. We showed up at its opening on Saturday and ran through the museum, saw a planetarium show, a movie in the dome theater, a live science experiment show, and a simulator. You will easily spend six hours doing everything, so plan on enjoying. Check out the pictures!Little do people know, folks from the Cosmosphere were tapped by NASA to help restore the Apollo-era Mission Operations Control Room (MOCR). In 2018, at the Cosmosphere’s SpaceWorks restoration facility, conservators carefully took apart the more than half-century old consoles and brought them back to life. According to Sandra Tetley, the historic preservation officer and real property officer at Johnson Space Center, “They will be backlit with LED lighting so the visitor’s experience is such that when you are in the viewing room looking in, all of the lights and monitors will be the same as when we were landing on the moon.”I highly recommend going and going back. I cant wait to go back soon!
Had a great time learning about space travel, rockets and even the Cold War. Dr. Goddards lab was easily a favorite. Its the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Highly recommended if youve never been!
Ive been with my wife and boys a few times over the years its an amazing place and we really enjoyed seeing the actual Apollo 13 space Capsule NASA keeps it here, we also got to see them refurbishing the actual Liberty Bell Space Capsule after they found it deep in the Atlantic Ocean from being lost years ago, its and amazing place to visit my family and I enjoyed it so much we highly recommend stopping by and see some of American Space history and Russian Space history as well, it a very Educational and Entertaining way to spend the day with your Loved ones the Cooper family Glenpool, Ok
The Planes Blow my Mind, their size is Beyond Gigantic! Amazing place to learn our History.
We have visited the Cosmosphere a number of times over the years when we come to town to visit family. It has something for everyone. Go, you wont be disappointed.
Best space related museum off of a NASA installation I have been to. Has a small size omnimax theater as well.
This is an incredible place with a ton of historical artifacts on display. The staff is professional and over the top friendly. I cannot wait to go back someday!
Hadnt been in several years, being back brought up many fond memories from my teenage years. I brought two small children with me on this visit. While some things didnt interest them all that much, they had an absolute blast. They really enjoyed the museum and how close you are able to get to real rockets. Both were sound asleep within 10 minutes of leaving. We ate lunch on-site. They offer several different options and they are all reasonably priced. The three of us ate lunch for about $18. If youre looking for a souvenir, the gift shop has a decent mix if items. I was able to buy a shot glass, one kiddo got a stuffed space shuttle and the other got a telescope. The store also carries toys, books, apparel, meteorite pieces, writing utensils and many other space and Cosmophere related items. If I remember correctly there are only 7 items in the entire museum that are fake...can you spot them?
We always love going to the Cosmosphere, the exhibits are amazingly detailed and we learn something new every timed
This is a nice place to visit. Historic second war memories are attractive.History of the landing on the moon is awesome with many pictures and models.
Several different things to check out. Staff is great at giving guided tours. If your have time check out the science show. Can be an all day event.
An excellent excursion for space enthusiasts. Also, the home of XR71. Most impressive exhibit. Next week a large portion of the museum will be reopened.
The Cosmosphere may be my favorite place on Earth. If I recommend one place for people to visit, it’s here. It doesn’t get the recognition it truly deserves. If you want to inspire your kids, or learn something yourself, head there now.
I havent been here since I was 10. It is awesome!!!!! I cant believe I waited till I was 53 to return. Apollo 13 capsule was the best! Err
O my god! Awesome place!!! I’m all over it!
Great place, authentic spacecraft and planes. Very educational.
This museum is mind-boggling. It surpasses anything weve seen at Cape Canaveral or the Smithsonian in Washington DC. The museum includes many space artifacts (a real Blackbird spy plane, German V2 rocket, Mercury, Apollo, and Gemini capsules, Soviet manned space capsules,...). This museum is a must-see for anyone interested in WWII, the space race, and todays space exploration.
This place has tons of information and interesting space related items. I was super happy to find the Apollo 13 capsule and an SR-71 Blackbird here. They also have an extremely rare (1 of only 5 left on Earth) metal sphere that the Russians left on the moon when they first hit it. There was rare letters and post cards and a large hunk of moon rock. The reason the museum doesn’t get a five star rating is the lack of hands on activities for younger kids and no educational staff on hand. If you visit Huntsvilles Rocket Center, they have retired scientists from NASA on hand to explain things. The front desk staff was nice, but there wasn’t a staff member anywhere in the place to answer questions. This place is still amazing and you should plan on spending 3-4 hours exploring it. If you have little kids that can’t read museum displays well, then they will be bored.
Super Awesome place!!! Badass!!?
We try and visit every few years and learn something new every time. Perfect place for family fun.
Our second trip here. This place is fantastic. Ive been to NASA multiple times and the Cosmosphere outshines it.There is so much to see here.It is set up so well.
Space museum, cosmos education, and early cosmonaut training facility exceeding all expectations!
Very well laid out. History is well written and one can see the space race from its infancy.
Absolutely the best place to stop and enjoy anything to do with space and space exploration
A neat/ hidden gym in the middle of Kansas.
Great place with tons to see for science and non-science buffs! The only place in the USA to house Russian satellites, planes and artifacts. It also has a piece of the Berlin Wall!Great self-explanatory walk-through (lot to read though).Inexpensive tickets. Great for kids and adults alike.Must visit if youre in town. Takes about 2 hours to finish the whole tour.Ample parking!
Must visit in Kansas. I find it better than the nasa in Houston. So much info and the documentaries are very good and informative.
What an amazing space museum! One of a kind artifacts from WWII through the Space Shuttle. Also the most unique static display of an SR-71 that Ive ever seen. Well worth the effort to get to, and not to be missed.
Outstanding ... much better than we anticipated!! The collection of U.S. space artifacts tells the story of the space race with incredible clarity! A must see if youre near Hutchinson, Kansas!
Such an amazing place! Thoroughly enjoyed all of it. I definitely would recommend this everyone!
Very cool the first time you go but sad to say that once youve been... you have pretty much seen it all!! I dont feel like they change it up very often and can be a bit on the pricey side. Id you have never visit its a must see... once!!
Certainly has lots of good stuff, but I have to recommend that you stay away for now. Its not worth the risk, imho. They do NOT require visitors to wear masks. When I visited on July 10, 2020, it wasnt crowded, but many visitors did NOT wear masks. Enitire families with children were not wearing masks. I was not comfortable. Visit only if you dont fear Covid-19. Sad that a science museum has so little respect for the science of epidemiology.
What a gem in the middle of Kansas! Weve been here twice and the the kids and parents loved it. There is so much space history here. We loved being able to touch a SR71, see the Apollo 13 Command Module, and so much other stuff too. They have a moon rock! This place is so cool, I highly recommend going out of your way to go here. Lots of Russian stuff too.
What a fantastic place to discover. They have a very cool assortment of relics and equipment from actual space missions. The video on space next was fantastic as well as the planetarium. This is a great place for young and old. They have a small Resteraunt with good food reasonably priced and a very well stocked gift shop that has something for everyone. Definitly Worth the visit.
Great experience! Make sure you come with lots of time to read all the info. Would not recommend for small kids.
Went as a 2nd grader now, now my 2nd grader gets to enough it.
A wonderful place where you can see things like nowhere else on earth!
Wow what an incredible place in such a random place. This museum is so fascinating. It tells you all about the history of rockets a space travel. There is so much to read and look at. We spent 2 hours here are still didn’t get to read it all. They have real rockets and the original crew pod from Apollo 13. I’m not someone who would necessarily be that interested in space travel but I found this so fascinating. This place is really worth a visit even if you have to drive a little out of the way to get to it.
COVID 19 safety precautions everywhere! What an amazing way to spend an educational day!
This place was awesome so informable and active they do these science stuff like building a rocket so audience tooned
I loved this space museum as a child. So happy to find its still in Hutchinson. Took my nephews and had a blast touring it with them. Make sure you catch a show in the planetarium.
Great place to visit while in Kansas. The SR71 on display was 100% worth the trip.
When I was a kid visiting family from out-of-state, we would go here often, but I hadnt been for many years until recently. Its obvious to say but for where it is they have some incredible stuff on display and some very unique historical pieces. If you happen to be in the area definitely check it out, and if youre an aviation/space museum nerd you should definitely put this on your bucket list no matter where you live.
Such an educational place. Proud to have the the cosmosphere in Kansas.
So many cool artifacts from the space program and tons of info. The IMAX is a dome so youre inside the movie.
We love this place! It was our first time to visit and we loved all the facts, the exhibits, the history and the wonderful shows. The museum has a lot of great things to see, spaceships, models and videos. The presenter in Dr. Goddards Lab was entertaining and educational. And the two theaters were both amazing, we saw Space Next and Black Holes.. the dome shape of the theaters made the movies so realistic and the sound was great too.
Amazing Display of information from our history of space flight and travel!!!!!
Amazing displays and fun to visit. Wish we had had more time to spend there.
I wasnt sure what to expect from a space museum in Southern Kansas, but I was impressed. It has a great collection (SR-71, original Apollo 13 capsule, etc.) and conveys an amazing story of the evolution of rockets toward spaceflight. If youre interested in space history, this is a must see.
Very informative and interesting. The best parts by far were the shows. Make sure you pay for the planetarium shows when you get there because the museum part alone would probably not be worth it. Otherwise it was great!
Great family venue... Anywhere that had an SR-71 is cool!!!
More exhibits and info than can be done in a day. The scientist show is great.
Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Cosmosphere. The staff and visitors were excellent. The exhibits were awesome with detailed informative descriptions. A place to visit more than once.
The Cosmosphere is always a good time. Dont skip Doctor Goddards Lab. The place is starting to feel a little dated, would be nice to see some modern space exhibits, maybe some larger sections on space itself. A section on science fiction would be fun as well. There hasnt been anything nearly as exciting as the moon landing in the last twenty years, so its not really their fault, but even a section on civilian space travel with mention of SpaceX would be interesting. Just needs something to let us know humanity is still reaching for the stars and we should get excited again.
Great museum and exhibits are very good and informative
An absolute must see when visiting the Wichita area! It’s a bit of a drive, but worth it with all of the cool space, aeronautic, and historical displays. There Digital Dome Theatre is awesome, too! It’s great that they sell tickets to the theatre and museum separately, so you can easily tailor your day around what interests you the most. There’s a snack bar with lots of choices ranging from soda and popcorn to ice cream and energy drinks. The showtimes are listed online, so it makes planning pretty easy. The museum is awesome! It does a good job of covering not only the US space program, but the historical events leading up to it. There is a piece of the Berlin Wall on display, WWII is explained and the recruitment of Axis scientists is included, the space race, and tons of great relics from our space program. It’s something that appeals to all ages (my kids are 3 and 6), and there are even two rockets on display. One of them had an outdoor area that’s designed like a launchpad and where the kids can get up close to the rocket base. Mine loved it!There is a Future Astronaut Program here, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! I went to all of the levels, and it was an invaluable experience! They bring in special speakers throughout the year, and they are constantly adding to the display collection because they closely partner with NASA.It definitely inspires a sense of wonder!
I have loved this place since I was a child as does my significant other! Now we love bringing our children to the cosmosphere! Thanks for having a little area for the little ones as well!
