Just finished watching several great performances tonight. Was my first time at the venue and it was really neat. Tons of great artwork. everyone was super friendly. Overall a great place to see some local talent. They have cheap alcohol, sodas, water and a food truck that serves fresh pizzas right outside. What more could you want?
This place is not for everyone. I asked musicians and the guy at the front desk. No one could tell me what it really was. Id bring the ol pepper spray for the parking (lot?). But for a unique, intimate connection to the musicians; a totally noncommercial, casual hang-out...this place is the bomb! If you catch someone great there, you feel like you tricked the whole world.
Has really came up from 4 years ago.. The new sound system they have is superb. Really great for live shows with a smoke friendly patio in the back..
I love this spot I played my first show ever and people loved it also the cats loved it which is a total bonus lol also the decor it fabulously fun and the people are very friendly. The ac isn’t working but I’m from Texas I’ve installed ac in hot attics and I drive a car without ac through the post apocalyptic hell scape that is Houston traffic. Anyhow the spot is legit, it’s not that hot, and it’d doesn’t smell bad. The stage is great and the sound system is badass enough to handle my suuuuuper bassy dubstep
Weird wacky performance art/music space. Pretty good sound, lots of varied types of shows. Ive performed there several times and its fun.
Invest in some AC!!!! Good lord. Also, the performers should be first come! I saw this guy here at 9 when there was like, oh idk, 7 people here and I asked if he was performing and I have yet to see him up there. Definitely unorganized. Ive been here for 3 hours man...I am dumbfounded. I came once and thats all I needed. Not for me. I usually try to give an in-depth review but man, it was hard considering Ive been standing for 3 hours. Godspeed.
Place nerds an a/c bad but they know how to throw a party
Yeah, it smells like cat piss and mold, but this place is a rad venue. Worth seeing at least once. Plus the people running it are super friendly and welcoming.
Very funky, eclectic kind of space. You never know whats in store. It will be much better when they fix the AC.
Did it smell like cat pee? Yes. Was it hot af? Yes. Was the kitschy decor kinda creepy? Yup! BUT, If this place were in NY or Berlin it’d be packed every night. Just the kind of funky warehouse you can dance the night away (if the DJ allows) Can’t say I’ll be back but I did enjoy myself. Parking was free and easy. That’s always a +
I recently went for a show. I paid $15 to get in and when I stepped inside it literally felt like they had a heater blowing, in the middle of July in Texas this was terribly unenjoyable. I stayed outside in the back where had no lights on at all untill 11pm so people had their cell phone lights on. All around just unorganized and sooo HOT.2 stars because at least the art was cool and it looked like it has potential to be a lot of fun. Potential being the key word.
This venue is a right-of-passage for Houston musicians. It can either be too warm or too cold, depending on the time of year, and its likely you wont find a more random collection of Things in one place. But the latter is what makes it unique. The graffiti art within sets the scene for great photos/videos--make sure you bring a photographer to your SHFL gig. Enjoy the ride.
Go frequently, and give them lots of money.
Here is what you need to know before playing SHFL:1) The AC is broken so expect it to be very hot. Fans help push the hot stinky air around.2) The place stinks like cat pee. There is cat poop on stage, pee smell everywhere and the last time we were there, a huge wet hair ball next to the stage.3) The sound system is poor. Your instrument cabinets will not be micd and the monitors on stage do not work. Good luck.4) The sound guy goes missing in action. He initially sets up and then disappears. During one set on of the working speakers fed back the entire time.5) The restrooms are a disaster. Nobody has cleaned them in months or even years. Guys go around back and spare your nose hairs the pain.6) There are fleas everywhere from the cats. I kept feeling the bite on my ankles. Should have wore pants.SHFL has a lot of potential in an area that is up and coming but under the current situation, it is dying a slow death. Really too bad considering the cool vibe it has.
I loved this venue. The S.U.C. & the Screw Shop gsve a wonderful performance!
Its super, happy, fun, and on land.
There is no AC. The entire building smells like cat pee. The kitschy decor that actually just looks straight out of a hoarders garage really might be charming if not for that... however literally breathing in cat piss in a sweltering hot dungeon is maybe not the best time
Lol i think your suppose to not like this place to like it.
I really wish I could rate this one higher because the stage is awesome. We showed up to play and the audio engineer did not even know what he was doing. We inquired about booking shows there and they told us to call the number on the side of the building to see what days were available. We called many times and got nothing but the run around on how to book a show there. Horrible customer service and communication on their part.
I feel like these words couldve been worded better
Super neat venue chill vibes .
Had a great time today here at super happy bunch of beautiful people great place your chance to check out the services
Its a strange place man, Id go with caution and a big group of friends.
Probably this place is not for everyone. But I always have fun and everyone is always really nice. There is a lot to see. Very artsy, kind of weird, always welcoming. Interesting musical acts and more.
Good prices on herbs.
Great venue! I saw Hank Green and the Perfect Strangers here and the staff are super friendly, the environment is great, and its very kid-friendly. There are couches all around the sides of the floor for when you realize youve been rocking too hard and need to sit down for a moment, complete with pillows and blankets for added comfort. The space can get a bit warm and humid, as one might expect, but theres a deck situated to the left of the stage where you can take a breather and come back in when you want to without missing any of your favorite artists songs. The drinks are reasonably priced—as in, $.75 - $1 for a can of soda—which is insane, given the fact that its a relatively popular venue. Also, water is absolutely free if you get it from the cooler opposite the drink station. You can even get butterbeer, if youre so inclined (though I cant remember if a non-alcoholic version is available). The atmosphere is great, food and drinks are ridiculously cheap for a venue, and the staff is friendly and helpful. What more could you want?
Its quirky. Definitely has that going for it. They throw live shows from time to time. The staff was weird, but nice. Oldheads. I do not advise for you to buy any beer here, as it will be served room temperature and all it seems to be is Lone Star. Been here once, perhaps thats about as much as it can offer me, as I dont see a reason to return.
Trippy
Hole in the wall underground vibe
No AC, smells like cat pee, and incredibly crowded in a these piles of stuff might fall on me kind of way. The show itself was great, but the venue was not.
A truly happy place. A legit music venue that holds true to its D.I.Y. roots. I wish every city could have a place this great. Avoid the bathrooms, not for the high heels and valet crowd.
Local live music... What more can i say.. Its a bit grungy...not the music the place
Came here to see Hank Green and the Perfect Strangers. Not only were the bathrooms SUPER gross, but there is literally only 1-2 air-conditioning vents in the entire place. You could be standing still not even near anyone and sweat would just pour off of you. It was so bad that Hank Green opened with, if you start to feel dizzy and sick, go get some water and sit down because if youre dehydrated and could get heat stroke. Although I dont know if Id sit on any of the available couches there, which looked like they had been pulled straight from the dumpsters after hobos decided they werent even good enough for them. The concert was fun, but geez that place seems unsafe.
Daughter traveling with friends to see concert January 15TH from North Little Rock Arkansas....safe travels
Could this place do with some cleaning? Yes. Absolutely yes. But what it lacks in that respect, it makes up for in pure eccentricity. Superhappyfunland is the only place in - dare I say - the WORLD where you can walk in and be greeted by the cold dark eyes of hundreds of Raggety Ann dolls. This is an urban house of artistic works from a vast array of people and views. Concerts here are well-designed, if dimly lit, and nearly always worth the inexpensive $7 entrance fee. Come here and enjoy yourself, theres some amazing talent in our city.
The place for eclectic mix of sub- counter- culture performances.
I went there for an art event and there was no AC and the venue did not tell us before hand
Friends band booked a night there and the venue forgot that they were even playing! A/C didnt work. They had no drinking water. Random cats roaming the facility. Horrid bathrooms. The place definitely has potential, but its just very poorly maintained.
Disgusting. There is no air conditioning and I think there is mold on the walls. There were some roaches walking around. When I came home, I had little bite marks on my arms and couldnt stop itching after using their chairs. Music was good, other than that, it was terrible
You cant go wrong here with the live shows and cheap beer!
So this place is the very definition of a DIY venue. No frills, sketchy building, sketchier restrooms, the whole works. The folks running this place are cool, theres surprisingly decent parking, and the sound is not too bad. There are art pieces scattered throughout, dolls, all kinds of cool stuff. Stage is plenty big, and there is seating too, something you dont always get at a dive punk venue. Im honestly not sure what their bar situation is, everyone I saw was bringing their own booze with them. All in all a really cool place, run by really cool folks. I will warn you about the smell though, it is palpable. Once youre in there for like 5 minutes youll forget all about it.
Awesomely weird everyone is accepted
Great art work but I have not attended any shows here
Its pretty good when they host events. Never boring. I enjoy the showcase it provides.
Dead Some Nights, but as the title states if you are out of a normal state you will enjoy this strange super-hippy-fog-land. Saw a friends band there once and I was the only person there other than the sound guy, random info but true.
What a fun and eclectic place! Great live shows and fun for all.
Imo the coolest underground venue in Eado if not all of Houston. Host to a variety of different shows and performances, Super Happy Brians Super Happy Fun Land feels like a unique, graffiti laden ode to Adult Swim shows and culture.
Avoid avoid avoid. My band traveled all the way from florida to play here with another band from Tennessee. Unloaded all our gear waited around for 3 hours only to be told there was no show. To find out where the bands that night were playing and try to hop on their show. At this point it is about 9pm. Anyways we couldnt hop on anything that late as well as the guy didnt pay us. Locked himself inside the venue until we left around midnight. The place also has no A/c and is really creepy and hot. The only thing this building would be good for is a car photoshoot maybe?
Every year they have a SXSW Overflow Fest for the two weeks around SXSW. You can buy a cheap pass and see all kinds of eclectic bands/performers for a fraction of what youd pay to go to SXSW...not to mention, no traffic or huge crowds or crazy drunks that run people over!
I went there last year for Carl Sagan Day, an Atheist Meetup event and we had a great time. They started with poetry readings and quotes from his TV show Cosmos and his books The Demon-Haunted World, Contact, etc. Then they played YouTube videos of a dance mix based on his narration on Cosmos. The staff were very friendly, the sound system was great and the bathrooms had interesting and funny grafitti walls. I loved the dance floor in front of the stage, because I break danced to a YouTube video of one of Weird Al Yankovics rap parodies. We all enjoyed their food and drinks. I had a Coke, everyone else had beer. We sang along with the YouTube Monty Python videos. I played air guitar to Queens Bohemian Rhapsody. Best place for a Meetup, ever!
The most fun Ive had in years
Old and needs work... Oh and AC... Oh my God it is hot
Lots of women but the crowd has to many youngsters
I LOVE LOVE LOVE SUPER HAPPY FUNLAND AND EVERYONE THERE! !I AWESOMENESS! !!!!
Cool spot with alot of character.
You probably know if you are the kind of person that would like this place, I knew in advance I was not. My rating is based on the fact they dont accept credit cards and only have canned beer.
Love there pizza, great for late night munchies
Pretty eclectic venue
Love this place!
Not gunna lie pretty sick
Pizza!
Gross
This place is wild hahhahaah
Cool dude :)!!!
Great place
Great performance it was lit
This place is as weird as they get. It looks like it hasnt been cleaned in years. The owners are also extremely metal-ophobic for a music venue and the owners always pester me for weed whenever I come through.
Great venue nice folks
Old fashion Need remodeling
Beautiful creative space.
Judging from some of these reviews, maybe the motto should be, were smiling on the inside :)
