I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The first thing that struck me was the high ceilings and beautiful lighting. This is a small museum, but chock full of fascinating exhibits and history. Its all on one floor and easy to navigate independently or with the help of one of the well-informed docents. The ship models, spanning the history of water travel, are magnificent. A really cool feature is a big screen showing the actual ship positions of vessels currently in the Gulf. You, or your kiddos can operate the keyboard to click on the ships, see where theyre from, what type vessel, etc., in REAL TIME. As a grandmother of kids ranging from 2 to 17, I would say that this museum would hold the interest of a 3rd grader, or 9 yo and older. Its GREAT for adults of all ages! There is a kids area with a hands-on ships wheel, costumes, art area, etc. The restrooms are nice and the parking is superb; free, one level and right in front of the entry. Expect to spend about an hour to 1.5 hours here, unless youre a mariner, in which case, you could spend all day.
Really great time getting to read and learn about the nautical history of Houston. Its worth it to get a private guide as they have lots of info and its not a very large museum but I still spent about 2 hours inside just reading. Also its cheap and has AC and if you need to get out of the sun, come give it a visit! And make sure to come on events they have!
This is an overlooked attraction. There’s some really interesting stuff here about the Texas Navy, ships and shipping. As you would expect it heavily focused on Texas and that’s great because it gives the exhibit focus. While your in the area take a trip down the street to El Tiempo for an excellent meal after your visit.
This museum offered a really interesting view on Houstons maritime history. The people that worked here were very knowledgeable and friendly (always a plus at any museum). They are working on making a new and fresh building, and I know its going to be an amazing upgrade!
My kids started out thinking theyd be bored by a bunch of ship stuff, and ended up really enjoying our visit. I appreciated the educational aspect of it all. There are free family days once a month - give it a try!
I love their new location, their exhibits are educational, and they have exciting plans for the future.
This place was great if you have interest in the topic. The people working there are very knowledgeable and do a wonderful job in running the museum. Its an especially great place if you have young children who like maritime topics. The museum has a kids corner where they can make their own little boat or play pretend with their models and costumes.
Intereting place if you like boats or houston history.
Great museum full of informations and nice exhibits! The docent was so nice! A colorful game room for kids too!
Do the tour. They are very knowledgeable.
Hidden gem in Houston. The staff, history and models are outstanding. Be sure and ask questions of the staff, they know their stuff!
A very nice museum tucked away from the better-known Museum District. Excellent model collection, especially the huge HMS Victory.
Great museum to learn some history about ships and also military ships from WWI and WWII. Great history lesson
Very educational and interactive, wonderful docents, very knowledgeable.
Love this place!! New building is awesome!!
We enjoyed the history and information that is offered here. My 9 year old truly enjoyed reading about the history of the Houston ship and seeing the information about Galveston as well.
Houstons hidden gem. If youve not visited before, its well worth the time.
A feast for the mind. Great for the whole family.
Houston has a lot of museums so hidden gems like this can fall through the cracks, but places like this are what make small museums great. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and building itself in charming. The exhibits are cool and interactive, and any questions you have can be answered by the tour guideBe sure to pay a visit when you are in the area. This place does it right.
Great historical information on Meritime? Global and US
I took my 3 yr old son to the first family day and we didnt leave till they turned out the lights! The new location is still pretty small but the models on display offer so much detail that youll easily spend your afternoon. The kids area has books, puzzles, costumes, coloring, etc and occupied most of our time. HPD came for family day and let us test out their boat.
Took the kids on a free weekend. Customes, games, projects and ship models and artifacts. Small in size but not on fun for my boys ages 6,4 and 3. My little girl and i enjoyed also too. Great staff
Closed on the weekends. How are we suppose to visit?
My husband and I enjoyed our day here immensely. Of course the fabulous models, and new-t- me information was a part of that, but the young docent who spent so much time in conversation with us made it a day I will remember. Thanks so much to you volunteers who preserve and especially to all who served our country.
Aaron did an outstanding job as the tour guide. It really helps to have a guide to really understand what you are looking at history wise. Excellent job!!
Definitely one of Houstons hidden gems. I went with some friends after seeing a deal on Groupon. We got a full guided tour of everything the museum had to offer. A great way to learn about Maritime history and a great way to spend an afternoon.
Small, but well worth the detour! Great models, focus from 17th century to WWII. Warships, commercial and some sailboats
Very small but neat!
Great educational programs, small but great exhibits, staff very knowledgeable, soon to open new building
Great people, nice exibits
Learn about the history of the port of Houston, sailing vessels through the ages and WWII aircraft carriers. Expect to spend a little over an hour to see all of the exhibits.
