The history. The information. The..... Man everything about the museum is something you just have to check out for yourself in your lifetime. I thought I knew a good amount of information about the buffalo soldiers but come to find out I didnt even scratch the surface. This place covers everything about these great heroic men and one women. Yes there is a woman ms William she wanted to join the military to help fight but couldnt because at that time women wasnt allowed in the service so she pretended to be a man and joined the military. The only way they found out was because she fallen ill and needed medical attention. It was then the doctors found out and kicked her out of the service. Theres alot of information here. Please go check out this place. It worth it. And make sure you stop by the gift shop to.
Im giving this place 4 stars because I was there for Black Market ~ I enjoyed shopping and supporting black enterprise ~ I would add more food trucks and use the parking lot
My visit to the Buffalo Soldier National Museum was an awesome visit. I love the artifacts and displays. The highlight of my visit was having the chance to talk with the only surviving Buffalo Soldier, Mr. Williams. It a place I will take my grandchildren to.
This was my second time here for two different occasions. My first time was for a wedding which was absolutely beautiful. My second time was for the Black Market which was such a great night. I love the History behind it. So worth many trips there.
Fantastic history lesson. Im sorry we didnt go earlier in the day. I feel like we missed a ton of content.
First time I visited the Buffalo Soldier Museum.. It was a very beautiful building and taught me alot about the soldiers and what they went though... But I was there for work.. doing a catering job.. it turned out really nice I would say... I going to upload some pictures of the catering area and you can see some of the Museums features..
Great history, great place more of us should visit I was the only visitor that day seems like
A lot of history is contained within this relatively small space. This museum showcases exhibits dating back to the American Civil War all the way through to 21st century Astronauts.Much to learn and much to consider regarding African-Americans presence in the United States armed forces.Tip.Admission is free on Thursdays from 1PM to 5PM.Enjoy
Was recommended this place by the residents. I came here while on vacation! I loved the Black Market event!
It was nice outside. I did not go in. Too late arrived. Nice memorable.
This is now the location for the blkmrkt - cool vendors and good vibes!
We have a national treasure in Houston. You need to go ASAP and learn about the heroes whose stories werent taught in school. There are exhibits running from the Revolutionary War through to Desert Storm and astronauts. Whether youre interested in weaponry or individual stories, they have you covered. Go!
Attended the BLCK Market!!! A wonderful event and opportunity to support the black community
Awesome experience. As the name suggests, this is a military museum forced on the African American armed forces experience. It was really cool to see that POV as you typically only here of a few stories. There is a very interesting exhibit relating to Houston, a court martial, and one one of the largest trials in American history. Stop by to see what Im referring to
The experience I had at the buffalo soldiers museum was excellent. The exhibits were well put together and the level of education I received from my visit was monumental. The staff was extremely friendly. I will definitely be visiting here again and will certainly bring others.
I love what the museum is providing for the community but I wouldnt visit the actual museum ever again. I felt like a lot of history was sugar coated. I want the real stories told. Maybe I missed it but what the black lgbt experience in the army? Some of these things are hard to talk about but its a conversation that needs to be had.
I visited The African American Military Museum during an event called Black Market Houston. The atmosphere was inviting and engaging. The market took place on all three floors of the museum so there was a lot to choose from. The condition was comfortable and not too crowded. The vendors were full of smiles and that was the best part! I gave this event five stars because they had it all, music, food trucks, and quality shopping. The constructive feedback that I have is in reference to the music. It was too loud, resulting in challenges when trying to network or just talk to the vendors about their business. Some of the businesses had some really amazing causes that I would have loved to hear more about, but the loud music paired with the vendors trying to scream in my ear resulted in little to no interaction. I also like to feel relaxed when I shop so the overstimulation of the loud music aided in the limited amount of time that I spent in the museum. Im sure I would have spent more money if the music was not as loud.
Awesome museum. Loved the free admission day on Thursday. I was able to take the kiddos and they enjoyed it. Plenty to see. I liked the different rooms with all types of different memorabilia.
Great historical museum where you can learn about the Buffalo soldiers. Bring your children.
Awesome location for events. Table set up was elegant, sound system and A/V was appropriate for the size of the room. Restrooms were clean and up to date. Elevator is reliable and roomy for large groups. Parking lot is clean with a great surface.
It was great I would love to see this place grow bigger
The Perfect Addition to our African American Heritage. Thanks for the tour
Pretty good exhibition. I liked it very much.
The Black Market is absolutely amazing!!
Loved it. My sons loved it as well. Learned a lot. Definitely worth the trip if you love history
Went here with my kids and they enjoyed it. Good exhibits and great way to teach them history in a fun way.
I had a good time with my friends, kinda scary when the dude we thought was a statue started singing buffalooooooooo sooooldier, BUFALOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOLDIER but it was still fun
It was really a historical moment for us. We had two hours before our flight to depart so we decided to go here and we are so glad that we did. We had the opportunity to meet the last of the Buffalo Soldiers and share great conversation with him. Thank you SGM James Williams for your service.
The tour guy was super funny and it was very interesting. I didnt know that much at first. The reenactment actress who played Hariet Tubmen was awesome. She made me cry. I would love to see Melissa Wyatt Thiboduex (sorry I think I spelled it wrong) none the less she was incredible!
I love this place. I had the pleasure of officiating a marriage ceremony here and it was so beautiful.
The museum was outstanding Sergeant Major Williams made it the Over-the- Top Best! Thank you sir!
Museum is nicely done and includes a wide range of historical information and displays to understand the origins and long-term contributions of these American soldiers. Start with the video to get a good overview of the history and of the museum origins.Nice stand-alone building with ample (free) parking.Well worth the price of admission!
It was amazing. There was so much African American History you cant find somewhere else.
This place is great for learning about the often overlooked parts of American history as it pertain to people of color and their committed service in the U.S. armed forces.I have brought guest from Kenya and South Africa, and each time they have left in awe of the rich history they had no idea existed.A great place for those who love history and broaden their knowledge.
Exceeded my expectations. This museum is treasure, and I look forward to returning. Great range of collections, even better context w/ stories and narratives. The gift shop has a great variety of items. The staff members were nice. Plan on spending at least 30-45 mins here as there is such great material to take in. Not far from downtown and ample parking is available.
Important opportunity to learn about African Americans who served. Tip: get the playing cards in the gift shop to come home with facts.
Great museum with collections through different ages of the US history
Its a nice place to burn a hour if you take your time. Not worth the price, interesting artifacts and pieces of history though! This is one of the few places you can bring to teach the kids about local American history.
I was in awe because of the wonderful exhibits that introduced me to another side of the black history experience.
They have events all the time here. Vendors selling food, clothing, jewelry and much more. Drink are available as well. Not to mention the museum itself is very informative and so much culture.
Very nice 50th Wedding Anniversary gathering was held there tonight. Beautiful event room setting. I had no idea this Museum had event rooms. You can also look around the museum. Only issue was listening to band try to outplay the band performing for another event going on in the room next door.
This museum has been on my list for several years. I finally got around to visiting, and I’m very glad that I did. They have a 15-minute video that gives you an overview regarding the history and some of the contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers. You can see actual uniforms as well as a coat made of buffalo skin. The museum features black contributions in the military not just during the era of the Buffalo Soldiers but all throughout Inited States history. They also have displays about women who served in the military sprinkled throughout and a video about a woman who posed as a man so she could serve in the military during the Civil War era. There’s also an exhibit paying homeage to many black astronauts. Although it is unrelated, it’s really interesting to see.
Buffalo Soldiers National Museum was venue for a Mike Bloomberg Campaign initiative. For this event display rooms seemed more spacious since my last visit. The main room was packed with people and created a fire hazard. A lady who was trying to leave the event tripped and fell over a makeshift stair case leading up to Media stage. I am surprised the stage didnt crash. The other rooms were bare with lots of food and drink. The event was great. Yolanda Adams was guest singer. Mayor Turner preached like he was at Church. Pastor Ralph West lead the opening prayer.
Nice museum and hosting facility. Looking to use it for a banquet in April!!
Small, but so nice. The artwork is so realistic and the antiques fill me with a lovely pain to see. And, of course, its just so wonderful to have a museum dedicated to these African American heroes.
This place should be one of the first places that you go to to find out about african American history
Comprehensive and engaging history of the Buffalo Soldiers. Was pleasantly surprised to receive a tour by the museums founder. Great gift shop and merchandise. Might want to consider a small cafe to keep folks onsite longer while generating more revenue. Hope that many more people will visit and donate while in the area.
A self guided tour. Very informative. Great place to bring the kids and anyone who is interested in learning about history. They give military and student discount just bring your ID
Excellent museum experience. Super easy free parking only feet from the entry door. Very knowledgeable, friendly and passionate staff made my visit very informative. Relatively small space but packed with interesting art, artifacts and informative signage. Beautiful building is very well kept.
We had a great time! We learned Alot!
I was there for the small Black Owned Business sale. The vegan ice-cream was pretty good!
Very interesting. Definitely see the Harriett Tubman reenactment! VERY GOOD. Excellent history. Can be a little on the slow side in sone parts. Overall, the history and historical artifacts are excellent! Definitely check out at least once. The front parking lot is small. There is decent parking to the right of the museum if facing the front door from the street.
Amazing venue! Black Market on 1st Friday really brings out the community! Always clean and great options for food trucks
Check out blkMarket when you can!
I was fortunate enough to be there on the rare occasion of a live one person reenactment . Excellent .
I learned so much while at this museum. I grew up learning about the Buffalo Soldiers, I just didnt learn the details until recently. The staff was very helpful and the museum itself had a lot of vital information about enlisted African Americans.
Very educational and great place to learn history. You can also purchase varied items from the store.
Absolutely amazing experience. Very well laid out with everything wheelchair accessible. Beautifully looked after and presented articles from the Buffalo soldiers with a lot of information easy to read in each area. The video was great to watch and staff were friendly. Definitely a place to visit!
A lot of knowledgeable history for people to know young or old
Little museum but very informative about the Buffalo soliders and they have a nice gift shop
Very informative! Loved it...
My cousin had her wedding there. I will be looking into having my graduation party there
Wonderful to see the contributions made by African Americans recognized. The staff were so welcoming and charming.Very enjoyable afternoon.
I finally got around to doing something fun (and nerdy) in Houston on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
History at its finest. This would be a great field trip for kids or adults.
Venue Night. Tons of vendors with great products. I highly recommend!
Very educational for the children I learned a lot today. I will be return very soon and also I like the merchandise. I will be purchasing more.
I loved it I went in February to celebrate black history month with a homeless shelter as a trip we learned alot everyone loved it and had fun I kinda wish we saw the new exhibit before we left
Interesting slice of history about the old west, plus information about blacks/African Americans in the military in general. There are some very good displays.
An overwhelming amount of African American Military display that is so moving. Its amazing that this museum attracts people of all races and from all walks of life. Although this was a spur of the moment visit, it was a detour with memories that will last a lifetime. Next time, I plan to take my gimbal and 360 camera once repaired. The staff are friendly and eager to assist. Thanks for the experience and thanks to my fellow Black Americans and all other Americans that served.
It was absolutely amazing! All the history and the nice gentleman explaining how things were back there really helped to paint a picture of what the soldiers went through! I loved every minute of it
Amazing Museum I never would have gone to had it not been for my friends hubby from Canada (they were down for a visit). I dont have much interest in military history even though I am a vet, but this museum is very much about the stories of the people (one in particular stood out but I wont spoil the story) who came to be Buffalo Soldiers. The museum has discounts for seniors, students and is reasonable at $10 each. The map pamphlet lays the journey through the museum that you can take and you can obviously take as long as you need, watch or read what you want etc. There are two fascinating videos in two different rooms so make sure you catch those. Take the time to read the displays and in particular the letters that are written; amazing stories. The artifacts are cool and the whole building really captures the flavor of the time these soldiers served their country against all odds with great honor and pride. I was so interested in it all that I only took one photo, that my friend was moved by and wanted to remember. (I hope that is ok with the museum...)The only criticism is that is was very cold in the museum which is usually a good thing but it was distractingly cold which is not usual or desired. But hey thats why we carry jackets in our cars down south.Put this museum on your to-do list and I am certain you wont be disappointed. I would also note that they have a good sized gift shop.
It represents an intricate part of of our Nations history as well as the recognition of a distinct group of Black Soldiers contributions to our Nations protection and sustainment
I loved it it was so surreal it was my first time being there and I took my friend and her daughter as well and it brought me to tears at some point watching the videos so I really loved it and the staff was excellent nice
This museum is rich in history and charm! Expect a humble establishment with gems throughout the museum. In fact, see if you can find the following:1. What year were African Americans allowed to join the military?2. How and where did the term Buffalo Soldier come from?3. Had the Buffalo Soldiers not existed, what effect could that have had on American society?4. Name one Native American Tribe that were considered Buffalo Soldiers?Enjoy this piece of history many will never know!
Great museum but needs more funding!
Beautiful readable history and artifacts from the buffalo, soldiers era. Also free parking!
Nice place to visit history of blacks
This facility was great for a medium to large church event and had ample space.
Nice for my first time here
Visited during a family vacation to Houston Texans the museum was awesome staff was great. We had a great time. The only thing I would add is perhaps a guided tour option
Awesome, the most fantastic time and learning about all their faithfulness to their country. Everyone needs to go.
We had an event there and it was beautiful. The dark wood, clean bathrooms and the friendly event clerk, was excellent. I would recommend this place for small events. If you have a big event, they also have an area for that.
Met the last living Buffalo Solider SGM James Williams. Best museum ever!
Its not open now! They are talking about opening it on September 15.
Its small, but full of so much information. The staff is wonderful and gracious. It is worth the experience!
Got to see Presidential candidate. Mike Bloombergs first Houston rally. Terrific job not by the museum and by Bloomberg
Great history location as well as hosts BLCK Market which is almost like a flea market.
The museum has a ton of artifacts to view. Our guide was very engaging, knowledgeable, and humorous.
The BLCK Market was amazing! I make it a goal to patronize at least 6 black owned businesses everytime I attend. This time, I purchased oils, black soap and incense from Scentsations, bracelets from Fly Like Us, lip gloss from Loving Lacquer Cosmetics, juices from Sophies Punch, soaps from Soapy Luv, and waistbeads from Crafts Wombman. I am thoroughly happy about my purchases. I will be returning to the BLCK Market soon to patronize at least 6 more black owned businesses!!!
A lot of history as old as I am. We need to bring the young people in to view the Museum. To know the history(
I love history and enhancing my knowledge about different subjects. The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is that place where I learned something new!
It was pretty good! Visit it (less than 30 minuets) if you can!
Love this place. So much history, well kept and perfect venue place.
This is an incredible venue ....with many options and amenities! Wo derful for any event and full of history!!!!
So much can be learned about history at this awesome museum. Not only can you take a tour but there is always something happening like the M.E.N. Inc. and the Black Market. This is a great place to host events. The employees are very attentive and knowledgeable. This museum comes highly recommended.
My first time coming to this place. And I really like it.
