I really like the new building... but the roof garden, though a great concept, is a little underwhelming as built. Can it really be called a garden if theres only 1 plant type? The ivy they planted up there does not appear to be enjoying itself either, since half of it is dead. Im guessing the shallow depth soil on the roof dries pretty quickly. Perhaps NATIVE plants (yes more than 1 species) suited to an arid climate (due to the quick drying soil) would accomplish more? If the architect, Steven Holl, is a wise man, surely he can handle a different and more varied approach to the garden plantings.
Just checked out the new roof garden...and was thrilled to see a new Htown landmark in the making...I love how the roof pitch is used for a large outdoor gallery to view the adjacent sculpture garden w views to the park. The gentle slope makes for a comfortable stair climb but there is an elevator also...just not sure about hours operation. Parking is brutal but u can find street parking on weekend if u hunt around.
I love my school, my teachers, the building and the atmosphere there. Great place to increase your creativity!
Very cool looking building. A couple of sculptures, a water feature, and a rooftop garden. Inside has a lot of artwork on display and the coldest drinking fountain ever. Take the elevator or climb the many stairs to the rooftop garden to get a birds eye view of the neighboring sculpture garden.
This institution, at its core is racist. Me and a group of my friends were harassed by security guards for doing an impromptu photoshoot. The director of the junior division told us not to touch or put our stuff on the walls (our stuff was no where near the walls). She also said we could have the photoshoot but then sent the head of security to tell us we couldnt do the photoshoot. After one security guard said it was ok to have the photoshoot, he kept sending more security guards to tell us something different. Were Black so of course there was a need to constantly police us as we occupied the space. This is not a place to grow artistically. I would encourage any African American artist to take their gifts elsewhere. This is not the place to be culturally and artistically affirmed.
This art school provides learning opportunities for students of all ages. My 5year-old has enjoyed painting and coloring on her home easel since she was a toddler so we thought we would encourage her interest and enhance her skills with some art classes at the Glassell Junior School of Art. The art school is connected with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) organization and campus. The building is absolutely beautiful and the classrooms are well equipped for blooming artists striving to become.better at their craft. The current program our daughter is participating in is an Art Tales program. A story is read to the students and then they create art afterward that is inspired by the story. Various media are explored and used; drawing, painting, clay sculpting, etc. The class is 2 hours in duration, once weekly, and takes place for a period of 3 months. Its a great program and a sure fire way to enhance cultural enrichment and serve as an expressive and creative outlet. The campus is directly adjacent to the MFAH, so parents can enjoy a day at the museum while children are in class if they feel (membership or admission required) or, simply browse the student art on display in the galleries of The Glassell School of Art (this is free) and there is plenty to see. There is also a sculpture garden on campus to stroll through (for free) and a rooftop deck that makes for some lovely views and photo opportunities. Free street/curbside parking is usually available, otherwise there is a fee-based parking structure.
Beautiful new campus BUT instructors focus too much on their own art pieces (ceramics especially) and not teaching students; very sad and not honest when youre paying to be taught.
The new campus is beautiful! It houses Houstons version of the bean or the proper name the cloud column. The area outside is beautiful too. They built a garden with views of downtown. The gardens are still in the early stages so the flowers havent bloomed yet, but this area will be amazing once its done. I loved the steps since they were narrow made going up and down easy.
My son took class here for a year. To say it is the best art school in Houston would be an understatement. It is probably the best art school in the nation. He brought home projects and crafts that looked to be years beyond what we thought a preschooler could do. At the end of each season, the students would put on a show of some sort to show parents what theyd learned. This was always well organized and enjoyable. The teachers here are wonderful. Weve since moved from the area, but when we return, plan to register our kids again.
Love the Glassell School!! it is a wonderful place to study different art techniques. The teachers are friendly and knowledgeable!!
Update: my 5 stars is now 1 star. After taking classes here for over 4 years, we had an issue with one of the classes and the director handled it very poorly. I wasnt upset by her answer but I was upset by the way she treated me. I left more than three messages she never returned them and instead started a back and forth debate with me over email despite my requesting a conversation so that we can work it out quickly, professionally and amicably. Her last email bordered on rude and I didnt even bother responding to her. I finally decided that even if the teachers are good, nothing is worth being treated like that! Her unprofessionalism lost the school a lifetime customer.
I live within walking distance and for the past 2 weekends they had live music on the patio and it was great! My dog & I plan on walking over again this weekend.
My Grand daughter felt very ignored here ... she is an african American. The instructor did nothing in rectifying the issue when brought to their attention ... took a financial loss ... and left.
This is an awesome school for kids with all ranges of talent. My daughter plans on studying art in college and has learned a lot from going to Glassell
My 5 year old daughter is one of their students. They do they great job encouraging little ones to be creative with a variety of medium.
