This is quite possibly the most pleasant and informative museum I’ve ever visited. If you are in the area a stop here is a must. I will also highly recommend the guided tour so as not to miss out on any bit of information.
A memorable experience that merits my prompt and frequent return. The untiring research of Mrs. MARGORIE Scoby is PRICELESS and most appreciated!!!The phenomenal collection of black history artifacts from all families in Terrebonne parish will blow your mind. Nice museum on African American history. I especially enjoyed the museum from its historical perspective. Nice administrative staff made it a joy to visit
I had done a guided tour. My church youth group and myself had enjoyed it. Very informative and interesting. You will find out how you are connected to the lineage.
A must see! I took the guided tour with Mr Tillman. The historical depth of the exhibits was astounding. The local focus with a national reach is very impressive. Mrs Margie Scoby and Mr Alvin Tillman each bring a treasure trove of knowledge to the museum; an invaluable resource to the region. This museum is on par with, if not better than some others Ive visited in larger cities. This is a must see destination.
Great gathering like atmosphere. I can feel the love and welcoming spirit each time I visit.
Extremely eye-opening experience. Its incredible what this humble museum holds. I did a self-guided tour, but will definitely be returning to get the full guided tour from the experts. So many wonderful artifacts, books, photos, and pieces of living history that simply cant be ignored when thinking about the role of African Americans throughout history. Plus, the museum does a nice job of highlighting Houma-area folks who rose to prominence through politics, sports, and more.
I havent been there yet but, I am interested in learning more about where some of them came from.
Great History Update, thing I didt know, great place to bring my grandkids.
I took the guided tour and it was awesome! My familys upcoming reunion will include a museum visit. This museum deserves our support. It is my hope that everyone who visits will take out a yearly membership. I believe that this museum can inspire other small communities around the country to uncover their own long buried historical truths.
Very interesting place and a lot of history
Its relatively new, I would like to see more of our pertinent local History, to include pictures of our local teachers from Southdown High School and Mechanicville Elementary School. This is just a small example, and its possible they have improved it since I was there.
Wonderful program on Gullah life and basket weaving
True edition of black history... cant get enough
Great place to do some real serious research check it out its not a waste of time
Wonderful very educational. Bless God,amen.
Eye opening. Jaw dropping. Mind blowing. African Americans have been here in this country since the beginning. We have contributed to building the very foundation of the United States. Blacks in Louisiana helped establish and maintain the economy of the South especially. This museum encompasses the relationship between African Americans and the institution of slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the civil rights movement in south eastern Louisiana. Mainly Terrabone and Lafourche parishes are focused on. But other places and events are documented and displayed. The massacre of 1887 in Thibodaux and the Georgetown 272 come to mind immediately. Many local people are showcased and honored that tells the story of our experience with pride and valor. A Must See Visit.
It is a great place to bring your family and friends. It has captured the history of wonderful people of the past for the future generation. Everyone should visit, young and old
This is museum is AMAZING! Very informative!!! I suggest the guided tour because you get a better experience.
Its amazing the greatest ever where you can see your past and have it meet you in your present while looking forward to your future
We had a wonderful time at the first annual Fall Fest of the Finding Our Roots African American History Museum yesterday. After visiting the various vendors (e.g., artists, foods, wellness professionals) at their booths we joined a tour of the museum. Our tour was conducted by a gentleman who is obviously very knowledgeable about the history of Blacks in Louisiana and Terrebonne Parish. Loved the way he took the time to include the children in the tour by making comments directed at them. It was also great that we had a chance to spend time with the museums founder, Ms. Margie Bailey Scoby. Great day! We will be back soon with other friends and family.
We had a great time and learned tons about our history and our community. Definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to be exposed to a part of history that they may not have heard in textbooks.
I really enjoyed myself. After learning the African American history of the place I reside I look upon who I am more now than I ever did.
