I love this museum! It’s free admission and visually captivating. Not only is the building architecture stunning but the art it holds within is also breathtaking. It’s very peaceful. When you go upstairs you have to give your bag to the guard at the desk. Downstairs they have a cafeteria and gift shop. The bathrooms are very nice.
Beautiful building inside and out! Wonderful art and super convenient. Ill definitely go back. The garden and terrace are gorgeous.
Lots of neat art from (mostly) locals. Overall I think I spent around 3 hours there and greatly enjoyed my visit. Paid parking is available quite close but not quite directly across the street.A note about accessibility: Inside the building was wheelchair accessible, but getting into the building was a little more difficult. There is a gate that is marked as the wheelchair entrance, but immediately in front of it is the unloading area for deliveries, and there isnt room for wheelchair navigation if there are also people unloading at the time.I also did not see a wheelchair ramp to get around the short stairs at the main entrance, Im sure there probably is a way but we did not see it. Once inside we had no problems as there was an elevator to the second floor where the art museum is.
Went for the live music and art museum on the first Friday of the month. There was contemporary music downstairs and what seemed to be a disney classical music medley upstairs. It was honestly pretty crowded, and being visitors to the area we didnt have a good idea of where to go and what was available, it took some wandering around before we found the actual exhibits upstairs but once we did there was some interesting stuff
There was an awesome childrens exhibit running while we went through here. Typically my experience with childrens exhibits is one or two have talent and the rest are shown for inclusion reasons. This wasnt the case however as all the students here were a testament to Hawaiis focus in culture and self expression
Hawaii State Art MuseumWhen it comes to visual art, I am not the person who should give critiques. I’m the guy who likes those paintings of dogs playing poker. So, as a person who explores a different form of art, I had to look around with an open mind and open heart. What stands out to me is the art that is directly relevant to the islands. So many pieces and so many different mediums, this non-visual art guy could only look and see stories. As I looked at a piece, I created a story on my head. Then I would read the actual story written about it I find that I’m close about half the time. But that’s what art is about. It’s not about coming to the same interpretation as the artist, but about find your story through their art. I’m in conflict about this post, so I’ll say this...If you want to get out of Waikiki, and see something that isn’t corporate generated, come downtown Honolulu at noon. Visit HiSAM then do a walkabout and see how Honolulu runs. Yes, we have the chronics and idiots, but we also have some great places to see in the middle of a work day! It will the best day you could have on O’ahu!!!!
Large and spacious. It is capable of displaying various pieces and hosting events. From wall art to fashion shows it is a very versatile location.
Great little free art gallery showcasing the acquisitions made by the Hawaiian government using the 1% rule (one percent of all funding for construction of governmental facilities must be dedicated to art purchases).
Love to go to the free special events, like First Fridays. Just went for Valentines day. Super fun activities and chill music!
Beautiful building. Well maintained. The stairway up to the museum is awesome. I like the Hawaiian side a lot. The New York side.. not as much. Staff were friendly and polite. Definitely with a quick stop. Is spend about 1 hour tops here. Unless you really like to stop and deeply interpret the art. Do skip the elevator. The stairs are awesome.
Not much there. Sort of modern and local art. Free. Worth a leek. Less than an hour.
Love this place. very cozy, clean, and cute.
Free! Small enough to cover in an hour or two, but nice collection of Hawaiian art, mostly contemporary but some traditional as well.
This is a very cool place to check out if you like art it showcases some of our best local artists and also has a great restaurant
A beautiful facility to house art pieces from our local artists.
Great free museum. Friendly staff. Lots of family events.
In a wheelchair, elevator not working, security guard blocking wheelchair access TOLD us to go to the front entrance,NO RAMP(he needs to be informed)!!!!Chairs in courtyard would be nice as well......done venting
Cute museum and not busy at all. Great place to take a break and look at some nice artworks!
Great exhibition, and it’s free.
Worth checking out. There are some interesting pieces and they have a nice kids hands on space. Plus they do events and performance things. Honolulu needs a place like this.
Great art museum based on local Hawaiian artists.
This is a wonderful place to visit, no matter how much time you may have. I like to come here in the afternoons while I wait for my bus. Its cool and quiet, with free admission, and the art selection is incredibly diverse, thoughtful, and exciting. My favorites are Esther Shimazu and Jan Becket. Go find your favorites!
I really enjoyed the exibition. It has some wonderful artworks and it is curated very well. Great written descriptions ad to this. The educational room totally amazed me!
This is for the people who love Art for a small fee or even free at the first Friday event of every month. Nicely located, small food place with some work shop. Keep an eye on the Jazz at the front lawn which is happened once a year.
I really enjoyed this museum. Its currently (May 2018) under construction, but the second floor gallery is still open to the public and contains numerous works of art by local artists. When I went, there was an exhibition by local elementary students that was fantastic as well. Will definitely be returning to see new works and look forward to the construction finishing up. Fantastic, FREE museum that is easily navigable.
We went on Super Saturday and my kids had a blast! Definitely will come again!
They are renovating but you can tell it is going to look more modern and trendy. I love the layout, but the art is weak for the most part. A huge lack of true raw talent and brilliant ideas in the art. A lot of the pieces look like something my daughter or teenager put together. Im a multiple national award winning artist of various competitions, etc., and Im only throwing that out there for the validity of the comments. The atmosphere and renovations are great! Now they need some excellent art pieces!!! Opinion or truth??? Go find out for yourself...
This place was great. I got the privilege to cater a fashion show event. I would definitely do it again
First visit in about 9 years. I enjoyed seeing the artwork, the museum is extremely clean, and the staff was all pleasant and helpful. Its a free museum, people!
Perfeft place to take quest and first timers in Hawaii. A piece of Hawaiis youth is always there for the world to see. Unique art Work every time.
Nice place. A bit small but great pieces to view. The building is beautiful and historic.
Surprisingly strong, small collection that effectively captures the ethos of the islands. Great way to establish context early on a trip
Loved the exhibition. Enjoyable environment. Friendly staff.
My new favorite museum! I loved the curation of art, the descriptions, the variety. Walked through both exhibits in about an hour, and thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
It was free to visit, and easy to get to by bus from Waikiki. It only takes about a half hour or so to go through so you can easily plan other things to do during the day.
Great hangout on a rainy day or any day for art lovers. Accessible path to museum entrance is distanced longer than main entrance and it could be redesigned to shorten distance, or add a ramp for wheelchair users and baby strollers at the main entrance for direct access to the museum.
The art pieces are beautiful and organic
Cool little art musuem with a kids center where kids can make their own installation type art.
Aww SNAP. This place is articulated. Great people there working. Intelligence is everywhere. Love is happiness. Happiness is Art. Food is amazing. Life is blessing.
Terrific museum with a great shop and cafe!
This place is free to visit and full of wonderful displays
Free and good selection of arts. Interesting for everyone.
Its a small but great collection of art. Its modern art with paintings, photography, and sculptures.
Come and enjoy the beautiful art with very welcoming staff.
Its quite nice, if youre into the type of modern art that they have there. Some of the pieces are just really, really weird, some are interesting, and some are really nice.
I highly recommend this area for you to take a look when you visit Honolulu, no fee for admission.
A little disappointing. The same show I saw five months ago and the big Hawaiian exhibit is closed!
Very odd and strange art showcasing. Was not impressed. But its free and clean place to visit.
Very nice museum. Short walk. Public transportation is right outside
We went there for a Super Saturday, it was very nice
2nd floor art exhibit professionally curated. When in downtown Honolulu, be sure to check the place out.
Great place that is also free.
Wonderful local art, great reflections on ways to see Hawaii.
Pleasant interlude. Enjoy
Nice little museum in downtown Honolulu. I go here time to time when theres in interesting exhibit. Decent collection of European, Asian, and local art. Theres also a kids section for the family. Pluses are that the admission is free and theres a decent restaurant down stairs...although the restaurant hours ends at like 1pm m-f. My knit pick is that I have to walk up a couple flights of stairs to get to the art, but all in all its a cool place to check out...
They have a great place to take kids to learn and explore art. Seconds Saturdays of the month is also a great time to take kids or for anyone interested in art.
The building was beautiful inside
Awesome museum! Nobodys ever there except the employees. Its a little walk down from the Honolulu Art Museum and worth the walk as there is no charge to enter and a cafe awaits to refresh you! Go, you wont be disappointed.
Quite refreshing to find worldclass art mixed in with native Hawaiian art along the walls at this fine establishment. this museum was better than a few art museums on the mainland even. highly recommended
Interesting small food, interpretive art, and great location.
Free is always a good time. Amazing art work
Great way to spend an afternoon the interactive room for the kids was awesome my kid had a blast building their own art
Small museum but with e very nice exhibition. The entrance is free.
Great free museum. Very well laid out.
A wonderful collection of art by established and emerging artists
The kids area is interactive and enriching. My kids really enjoyed it.
OMG. You will find more local fine art at the HSAM then any other gallery on the island. Both contemporary and retro. Admission is free! If you are not into art, spend some relaxing time here at the courtyard. What was once a pool is now a glass floor for you to walk on. And there are concrete seating for you too. Enjoy the local art.
Wonderful art collection and beautifully displayed! Particularly amazing display of Student Art. Highly recommended! And free admission!
My niece had her wedding reception here and it was nice. The upstairs courtyard was perfect for a wedding reception. During the reception, they even had the gallery open so you can browse the art work.
Awesome
Free on the 2nd floor, sculpture garden is nice also.
Great place. Very nice hands on childrens area.
Hawaii is great, but the places are just wonderful! My favorite part was seeing how the brush strokes get put together to become a majestic picture! Its the magic of art.
Fun place!
Really nice and cozy, relaxing and engagingwe love it and will come back for more!
An amazing collection
Fabulous artwork nicely displayed.
A secret gem tucked in the business district! It is free and offers a wide range of art mediums.
