Not the most beautiful park in NV, but theres historical significance if you keep hiking. The closer you are to the entrance, it looks like an old quarry to me. Ample free parking.
Great hike, been there a few times but find new trails every time. I will say its clean most of the time but once or twice have picked up a few trash items. But the flowers bloom and the rock structures are beautiful. There are lots of places to lose footing so i would recommend very nice high top hiking boots! We bring our dog and he is very active outdoors, being said he knows his way around i wouldnt bring a dog whos not well footed. No shade unfortunately.
The Sloan Canyon hiking trail was a nice change of scenery. The trails are easy to follow and are marked clearly. This hike had plenty of sights like lizards, rattlesnakes and Native American hierogliphs. The hike we did was 5 miles and relatively easy. Recommend for fresh air and peaceful atmosphere.
It was a surprise hike... loved it! First time ever seeing petroglyphs. Cant imagine the earth 4,000 years ago... the kinds of people, plant growth, creatures, regional landscape, weather condition, and more...Husband asked about Sloan Canyon. Online said there are petroglyphs. Glad we went!Three different trails: 100, 200, 300.100 is more strenuous and shortest.200 longer trail.300 longest trail.Started on Trail 100, returned on Trail 200. Never scaled a stone wall... with lot of coaxing, and daughter at top and husband at bottom, my heart settled down once both fours touched the top of 10 feet boulder!
It’s nice having a little bit of natural splendor close to home. Always nice people on the trails. Went for a bike ride on the bike path one night and even found some people stargazing right by the visitor’s center. I appreciate this part of the world
Be prepared! Its a long walk, take lots of water, wear good shoes. The 200 trail is pretty wild but a lot steeper than the 100. Although there are some pretty menacing waterfall areas in the 100 trail that are kinda hard to climb. We walked the 200 there and the 100 back, it was a lot easier.
This conservation area has a great 8 mile trail that winds through a pass between 2 of the 6 extinct volcanoes in the area. The trail starts near the base of Black Mountain and comes out south of Anthem in Henderson. The area was designated as a conservation area due to the petroglyphs that can be found on the Vegas side of the canyon.
We went on a ranger-led hike and had a great time learning about our desert environment, animals, and even history! The ranger was so patient with the group of kids and scheduling it was super easy. There were hardly any other patrons there either.
Great mostly level hike with a little scrambling and beautiful landscape... We did the whole hike and didnt see the petroglyphs, so when we got back we chatted with the ranger and went halfway back to see them... Not easy to see if youre not specifically looking to be on the lookout for them right after the rock scrambling...
Awesome and relatively easy desert hike to a pretty extensive collection of petroglyphs. Not recommended in the heat of summer, but in cooler months or the evening or morning it is great!
Great place to explore! Always take water with you and leave what you find. Take only photos, leave only footprints.
Good choice to visit after a busy day away from noisy environment of a crowded city like Las Vegas yet very close by. Especially if you like outdoor recreational activities like hiking and trekking in free natural environment. It is almost monochrome, I would have liked it more if there were colorful wild flowers and other plants available. I would not recommend to go alone, you never know, when and whether you will need help. Check your phone battery for sufficient charging level if you plan to spend a couple hours or more.
Nice trails for desert terrain lovers. Easy access and parking... This is a shared use trail area. So, pay attention! (there are mountain bikes, but motorized rides are prohibited)
Astounding Petroglyph Gallery, no entrance fee, beautiful hike. Moderate difficulty on the 4.4 mile loop. Go early & bring plenty of water...its hotter than Hades in the summer afternoons!
Great place. Park ranger made it uncomfortable... Which he was walking through also. He stopped everyone that came through the canyon. Not sure how much he likes his job.
I had a wonderful time viewing the interesting geology and evidence of archaic human activity. The first part of the 100 trail from the trailhead is flat and desolate and one might even say ugly (I wished more than once that not so much of it was protected so that we could perhaps skip the first mile of walking)! But it was worth the effort to see all the petroglyphs near the end. Im glad that it is a somewhat long trail because theres a bit of vandalism out there even so. On the early November afternoon of our hike, it was high 80s and hot (almost no shade throughout). Rangers are very helpful and try to walk the trail with water twice a day to keep people safe.
Easy to follow trails and signs posted at intervals and intersections.Great views on the desert mountains.
Beautiful hiking area. If you go during the summer, please bring plenty of water as there is no shade.
It is great for hiking! Did over an hour in 111 heat...
Sloan Canyon is The old west at its best! With stunning vistas the trails are well maintained. Wild sheep live in the area and are great subjects to photograph. If you are looking for a great place to get away from the strip I recommend Sloan Canyon.
Super fun hike. If u want the easier route take 200 to 100 the water fall area is vary slippery. Easy to slide down but difficult to climb.
A good place to see petroglyphs and be one with nature if you like to walk in the desert and mountains. Quiet, not crowded and free admission!
The area is kind of barren but its a nice place to get away from people. Some of the trails are gravel (minus the bike path?) so its best advised to wear boots. We went in June and did not get a chance to complete the trail as there was a rattlesnake blocking our path. There are bathrooms in the parking lot, which is quite small. Bonus: the Vegas skyline can be seen from here making for beautiful distant scenery.
Nice hike. Helpful staff at the trailhead. I didnt think the signs were that great. Amazing petroglyphs!!
Making it to the top was the highlight of the hike when its dark and all you see is the glowing lights of Vegas. One of the best night hikes I had ever done and one of the longest ones as well with the trip up being almost 3 hours and then 30 minutes on top and then about 2 hours down.
Such a beautiful place and the petroglyphs along Trail 100 (aka Petroglyph Trail) are awesome. So glad I made the trip there and hiked as much as I did.
Great area to hike that is close to Henderson. I personally looked at this place because I like to hike and prep for hunting season. Since it is close to Henderson, I want to be able to scout and simulate spaces that would be similar in difficulty that I would see as I would backpack hunt. The 100 and 200 trails are quite easy but if you want a solid long trek with some difficulty, then you should hit trail 300 and then come through 200 and loop towards 100 to go back to the original trail. Its roughly 8 miles and has some solid challenge going almost towards the top and over a peak.
Great time and beautiful scenery
Nice walk. Follow Cowboy trail if not that adventurous and fit. The other one starts easy and get tricky by the last dry waterfall. Pretty hard to get up that one.
Huge area with lots of trails and amazi g scenery. Some of the trails get difficult but there are plenty of mild ones too.
A precious and historic escape moments from the surreal (and imo unnecessary) excesses of Vegas. I went here in late January and it 51 degrees at 4pm. The petroglyphs are amazing and the entire conservation area was empty except for my car (and a ranger at the booth working for free during the Gov shutdown of 2018/9. Decent for trail running if youre used to dodging loose rocks. No dogs allowed on the petroglyph trail (as urine and such will destroy them). Other trails allow dogs and bikes. I hike pretty fast and did the trial loop (and some off the beaten path stuff) in less than 2 hours. Id block out 3 to properly immerse yourself. DONT LITTER
Amazing out door trails - enjoy while in Vegss!
Great 2 hour hike.
Amazing petroglyphs and amazing trails for running.Even better, hardly any traffic compared to Red Rock Canyon.
Take a walk out from Vegas! On route 100, there is a 12ft rise that you have to climb. I feel its more dangerous to go down than up! Just be careful and youll be fine!If you ask me, the 200 route is more difficult than the 100. The 200 is a long incline/decline and a winding path with uneven ground.Just make sure you have water!I hope they install some benches and/or shade at the tip of the path!
The Black Mountain Trail is the perfect combination of mild to somewhat extreme, and I recommend taking a previous commenters suggestion and do the hike in moderate temperatures. Its not difficult, but the last half-mile to mile section gets to be a bit of a rocky climb. The trail makes for great desert scape/ wildlife observation. Its a peaceful hike, but once at the top you get bombarded by flying bugs. Theres a white flag at just passed mid-way, and an American flag at the top next to a rock fort with a sign in canister. It takes about 2 hrs to get up with a moderate pace and breaks and about an hour and a half down at the same pace. The views at the top are definitely worth the work, and you can the entire valley including Boulder City and part of Lake Mead. I would do it again and recommend it.
A mile from me.. an a new spot to get in a quick mountainbike ride
My first hike in Sloan Canyon was Terrific. Spectacular hiking. So many petroglyphs. To many to count. About 4 miles of fairly moderate hiking. Only a couple of tuff spots to boulder over. Get out and a Enjoy Wild Nevada.
The Valley of Fire is gorgeous and there is lots to see and climb on! We even saw a whole bunch of mountain goats.
Awesome, so awesome! I was born in Vegas and never knew this existed. Nice little hike with some great petroglyphs in the canyon. 200 to 5000 years old, so cool. Worth the hike. If you want, do the loop. Gravel dry creek hike to petroglyphs, then contine to trail descent down a twisty canyon with great views of the valley.
This is an interesting desert hike that takes you up, or down a stream bed and small canyon. You will see a lot of petroglyphs if you walk slow and look around. There is a large boulder that you will either need to climb up over or climb down. We were lucky an ran into a person on the trail who knew the footholds and helped us down the boulder. Do take plenty of water. It gets very hot in the desert and you are exposed most of the hike so there is very little shade other than the canyon. Good hiking shoes are recommended also. much of the hike is through a dry stream bed with heavy gravel. Check your time as it is easy in the winter or spring to be caught in the dark if you leave the ranger station too late in the day. The hike can take 3 or more hours and there are also adjoining trails the cover many miles.Be sure to ask directions from the ranger and grab a map. There are few trail markers.
Amazing seeing the Indian writing(s) on the rocks. But..Ive been riding moto xxx out there for 30 years wayyy before it was a park. My only issue is the visitor center doesnt doesnt give you directions or show you half of the Indian markings and writings that are on the other side. Nor the history...back in the 20s and 30s it used to be a small Ive night stop for homestaders and travelers going to California. Unfortunately there is no reminiscence of any more wood or artifacts
Amazing hike up Black Mountain.
Nice views of the Las Vegas valley. Trail is dusty and theres not much vegetation, but its as close as it gets to a hike in Henderson
Great access point for hiking and biking.
Friendly staff and nice scenery .
Great short hike with tons of petroglyphs and beautiful desert scenery.Road up to the site is now paved and a manned ranger station has been added.
Great hikes. Great views.
The trails were amazing. There was an endless amount of wildlife; birds of prey, tarantulas, big horned sheep, lizards, and chipmunks. The views from certain areas were great, but the rock formations were unbelievable.
Good up hill hike, oh and down hill too!

Terrific hiking area less than 20 mn drive from central Las Vegas, featuring petroglyphs dated from 1500 to 5000 years old.
Great place to hike with lots of great pics to take. A bit hot though, bring water
Great place to see petroglyphs. The trail at first is fairly easy. However there are 3 points where you have to do some scrambling to get to the petroglyphs. Definitely worth it!!!
Man oh man!!! Once you make it over the first set of hills on trail 100, its like youre in another world!! Going back today!!
Neat hiking area tucked away in southwest Henderson. Can be a little tricky to find, at least as of right now. If you follow google maps or Siri youll end up at the front gate of a gated community. Youll likely take Via Inspirada to get there and youll go left on Bicentennial. Then watch for Via Firenze and take a right on it. Follow Via Firenze until it dead ends on Democracy. Go right on Democracy and it should be the first left. The ranger station will be at the top of the hill. (Democracy and well much of Via Inspirada is under construction and it may seem like youre not supposed to be there but its okay just be mindful of it)Once youre parked - go hiking! The main trail to the area with lots of petroglyphs is nice and wide and well maintained. There are about four places where youll need to climb up some rocks to continue on the trail so maybe dont bring grandma but most should manage it. Sloan Canyon maybe isnt as impressively beautiful as Red Rock or Valley of Fire but also nowhere near as crowded and thats always a plus. Still beautiful though with lots of desert critters and birds and red cacti and interesting rocks, etc, etc - all the things that make the desert so enchanting. All in all a great way to spend a few hours away from the neon hearted beast of Las Vegas. (Also bring food and water and gas up - the whole Via Insprirada community doesnt have much of anything right now other than homes for sale)
Great hiking, well marked trails, great views.
Awesome place to explore!
Nice view. Very windy be careful
I went to McCullough Hills trailhead which was dog friendly and super easy to find using Google Maps. Went around 10am on a Saturday and there were maybe 20 cars in the parking lot. The trailhead has a parking lot, by the way. I went on a trail to the right of the Sloan Canyon sign and it took me to a point at the top where you get a nice view of the strip and Henderson. The place is so big that I only crossed paths with two hikers who were super nice. Only did a two hour hike because the ground was rough on my dogs paw pads.
A beautiful and quiet place only minutes from downtown.
Combination of customer service and technical knowledge are just awesome. Contacted him for a visit and possibly a new opener for the very old Bungalow garage; he arrived on time with new opener on the truck, in two hours we had a great new opener.I recommend him to you for garage door or gate openers
Great hike, family outing, and has good trails.
Awesome hike with Chicken.
We enjoyed our recent visit to Sloan Canyon. Need hiking shoes, we prefer the early morning hike, so beautiful and peaceful. Hope to visit again soon.
Loved it! Great place to hike.
Great little hike. Really pretty views.
I love hiking Sloan Canyon. Its just steps from my house and there are so many different hikes you can take with various difficulty. I hiked up to the cell towers a couple of days ago. I think today I will hike up to Park Peak. Climbing Black mountain is in the near future.
Great place to experience nature and civilization. Trail overlooks downtown Las Vegas and looks awesome when the sun sets!
The trail markers could have been better though I do understand that some idiots think they have to take a marker home as a souvenir. A lot of trails for all levels. I would go there again.
Great trails for easy runs. Not technical at all
Fun hiking trails. Different levels of difficulty. Easy to intermediate. Shared with bikers and dogs. (They try to keep it clean but watch your step)
Awesome hike. Relatively easy for seasoned hikers. No dogs allowed in the gallery. 4 miles round trip. Take Plenty of water.
Loved the experience. The views are priceless.
Excellent hike! Better than expected no shade! Dont forget your hat and lots of water.
Sloan Canyon Is A Great Hiking Area. Very clean, safe abs the drive up its very scenic. I have climbed Black Mountain 133 times and find it to be my number hike for conditioning. Alternatively I hike to the cell tower gate.
An easy and beautiful hiking trail! I just wish people were more considerate and didnt litter. Help keep it beautiful!
Gorgeous view. Lovely lady at visitor center. Too long of a hike for kids so we didnt make it to suggested hikes which is approximately 4 hours total time if you hike fast. Typical is 4-6 hours. Not really for children but we went with kids and only done 2 hours total. Really becareful with the cactus there.
Whoa. The trails in this area are excellent. Did some mountain biking here with some friends. The trails are nice (I would say upper beginner/lower intermediate skills required) and the views are excellent. If you climb up high enough you can see Red Rocks recreation area on the other side of the valley. Bring plenty of water. Facilities (bathroom, parking) are excellent too.
I love our parks. This is pretty close and yet you feel far away from everything. I normally will see a few people here and there but most of the time there is no one in sight. Ive found the trails a little hard to follow, so have lots of time and water. Im no expert following trail markings though. And I like the feeling of being out in the middle of nowhere.
Beautiful desert landscapes just south of Las Vegas. Great for quick hikes/runs.
I really like to check out the rocks found here. I never take any home, but they are really beautiful some of them. The hiking trails are really cool too. You can also see some neat lizards and birds and dont forget to check out the petroglyphs as well.
It is a nice area. A bit challenging to find as you must navigate roads which look to be neighborhood entrances. The information station was unstaffed and restroom facilities were locked, however I did speak to a volunteer who was very helpful.
Its a great low impact, scenic trail with plenty to explore
Cant believe the NCR wont do anything about the deathclaws. shameful
An absolute amazing time in this terrain! Exploring this area was remarkable and so peaceful! Amazing 360 views!. Thats if you can hike to the peak.. Just do it.
This is a very beautiful hike has everything from dried waterfalls to seeing snakes and petroglyphs you can see lots of wildlife are snakes roadrunners desert wasp
Great place to get away quickly.
This place is amazing!
Hiked most of the way up Black Mt, but it gets pretty steep at the end so decided to hike up Park Peak instead. Beautiful sights of the whole city!
Nice hike, with one golden rule; dont do it in the afternoon.
This is a favorite. Sloan canyon is right behind my neighborhood. I highly recommend hiking it totally the petroglyphs or up Black mountain. Both are amazing.
