Mark Twain was a very interesting guy. I discovered this by visiting this museum. Our visit to the boyhood home was initially a way to get out of the cold wind for a bit, but when we were finished we had a completely different perspective on his life. I took away that he was a very special person, born with superior intelligence and a stunningly quick wit. Some of his quotes are ahead of their time. Regarding the museum, you get a lot for the price of admission. Access to his home and the surrounding buildings along with the museum down the street. Be sure to check out the first addition books and the Norman Rockwell paintings. I highly recommend visiting this museum and Hannibal, mo.
Great walk through historyThis was the highlight of our trip to walk through the many different houses, museum, and learn of his adventures that made his writing.1. Tickets for all the homes and both museums are $12.00 / person2. Lots of reading. Younger children may be bored.3. There are lifts in the house to reach the second floor. I did not see this for Mark Twains home.4. The Lighthouse can be reached by driving up to it. It has a small parking lot. You will have to walk the final steps (60+) to get to the lighthouse and it is not wheelchair accessible.5. You will get a better view from Lovers Leap than the lighthouse and it is 100% wheelchair accessible.
I didn’t have time to tour the boyhood home, but the museum was fabulous! For a $5 entry fee, I saw some amazing Norman Rockwell originals. The museum houses a number of the iconic artist’s sketches and paintings, all memorializing classic scenes from Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. The ladies at the museum, Barbara and Karen, were a wonderful resource of information. Barbara is an expert who has spent her entire life in Hannibal. Karen is an amateur historian who is very giving of her time and shows a genuine interest in educating the patrons. There are so many artifacts here including Mark Twain’s chair, jacket and pipe. Do not leave Hannibal without visiting the museum!
Totally enjoyed the tour. Self paced & visiting during the week, there wasnt much foot traffic. Some things were repeated during tour & never got impression that furnishings were authentic, more period pieces, I believe.Lastly Mark Twain Brewery is right across the street to quench your thirst after strolling thru different buildings along the tour.
Totally worth the price and time. Its a short self guided tour. Pleasant walk and easy to navigate. The exhibits are nicely set up and have great details. You can almost feel what it was like to live in the Twain household. The whole block is set up so you can picture the stories of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. I took a moment to imagine it for the middle of the street, turning slowly to take it all in. Also go to the Hannibal history museum too.
Interesting place to visit. Very informative and all the people working there were super friendly and helpful. A must see for Mark Twain fans.
Excellent!! Highly recommend! Several buildings to tour and also museum a few blocks away. Very interesting displays, our family really enjoyed this historic stop. Price reasonable. Plan to spend several hours. Thanks so much!!
Very cool. If you have are interested in American history. There is alot to learn about Mark Twain. Very interesting fellow.
A Hannibal staple for years. The home has held up well and the properties have recently been upgraded and restored. The Becky Thatcher home is particularly impressive.
Admission to the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum includes admission to 7 other total excellent museums nearby: the Interpretive Center, Huck Finn House, Becky Thatcher House, J.M. Clemens Justice of the Peace Office, Grants Drug Store, and Museum Gallery (which features 17 original Norman Rockwell sketches and paintings!) This all kept us busy for hours and gave us a lot to explore.
Such a fun place to revisit each time it has worn more interactive and interesting exhibits in which to truly learn about the man and his writings.
Very cool. Marques Bovre and the Evil Twins Sams Song would approve. Gift shop gal was awesome. Lighthouse view in the morning was also incredible.
The museum is very interactive for young kids! They make an effort to have ramps or lifts at all the buildings; however, it can still be a challenge to maneuver around. Also, the lady at the first gift shop, at Mark Twains house, is really nice and friendly!
Very nice tour and reasonably priced! However felt like a child going into the souvenier shop with all of the rules of do not touch and youll pay for it if you break it and the less than pleasant worker that stared at us the entire time. Just weird.
Excellent preservation of Mark Twains child home and memories. Self guided tour available.
This museum tour covers several prominent historical landmarks from Mark Twains childhood and characters from his books, featuring a second story gallery of Norman Rockwell works based on Tom Sawyer and others. There is a fee involved. Veterans and service people may tour free. The exhibits are family friendly with many interactive features for young children. This is a great family outing!
It was super interesting to learn more about Mark Twain and his family. They also talked about the topic of enslaved people in Hannibal and handled the topic with care.
Really really liked this place. Lots of history. Worth going for sure.
Worth the trip. Very interesting and quaint
Very nice. Friendly helpful staff. So wonderful use of linking each section together.
Extremely interesting and informative. Enjoyed walking thru at own pace.
This is a wonderful place to visit to see Mark Twains boyhood town & home. Beautiful little town & friendly people. Loved the storefronts & beautiful trees. The museum shouldnt be missed.
A wonderful historical place with his home and numerous historical pieces
Interactive museum that is perfect for all ages. Really liked sitting on the raft while watching videos. Museum made twIns books come to life!
The museum was well maintained. A lot of information was shared about Mark Twain and you could see a lot of the house. However, this mail want our favorite from our trip. It was the least captivating, but maybe thats because our group only knew a little about Mark Twain and his characters. It was fine, just not our favorite museum.
Loved it here. Nice self guided tour and good layout.
Very entertaining and informative at a good price. Dont forget the museum that is two blocks north included in the ticket price
$12 for adult and $10 for senior. A place worth to visit! People are very nice here.
If youre going to Hannibal, this is a must-do. Im assuming you have some interest in Mark Twain (otherwise why would you go to Hannibal in the first place). Admission includes a bunch of different Hannibal locations. Most of the houses you visit are close to each other and set up as museum pieces, with lots of signs to read but not much for young kids to do. At the last stop on the tour, the Museum Gallery, there were a lot more fun things for kids to do.
Great place and lots of interesting things to see
Nice place to visit with family, children or anyone who likes reading, stories of small towns and the legacy of Mark Twain.I do not place the 5 stars because I think there is not much information or activities on the streets, especially in winter season like now, but sure in summer its more fun!
Very informative. Lovely walk.
Amazing amount of Twain ArtifactsYou get a package deal for $12.00 and visit Gallery and Becky Thatchers house also...Well worth it!
What a wonderful historical site. We arrived later in the day and they were only open for another hour and yet the people couldn’t ha e been nicer to our little family. Even our three year old enjoyed looking around at all of the old furniture.
An ok place to stretch. Good for kids. Have them read Mark Twain books beflore attending. Will make the visit more meaningful.
This is such a neat little town. A must stop to walk around and take in the sights and cute stores.
A must see historical site
It was a very well worthwhile stop on our trip to see the author’s home and surroundings that inspired his amazing books.
Fun to explore around town. It was closed at the time when we were there.
Learned a lot about Mark Twain that I didnt know before.
Very amazing place to go. All the sites are very outstanding. The lighthouse is awesome 240 Steps and walking the steps up and back down is 480 steps all together. But you can drive up to the top!
Not alot of interesting things in there thanks to covid
Great museum, very informative. Plus, military veterans get in free.
Note: I only saw the museum; not the boyhood home. The museum is fairly small. One can see everything in about an hour. Lower floor has great interactive displays. Upper floor has rare Normal Rockwell originals as well as other memorabilia about Mark Twain. Price is right.
AWESOME place to go. They are also very military friendly. They let me in for free because my son is active duty . Highly recommend
Very enjoyable learning about one of Americas authors.
Nice area but be ready to pay for most tours. Many shops and eating. Nice little antique store
Great time here re-living my childhood reads of Mark Twain books. Had an enjoyable afternoon here. Definately worth the stop.
Beautiful and scenic, I love how well preserved the area is.
Its a piece of history. Its a beautiful place
It was a fun place to visit
This is a charming area that feels like a town from the past. Take a tour through history. Theres a beautiful lighthouse that requires walking up stairs, more stairs, and then more stairs (or you can drive). Please note: almost everything closes by around 5:00. My pictures were taken after 7:00 p.m.
During my dads retirement trip in 1995 we stayed there for a day. A visit of this location completes the impressions you have got from Mark Twains books!
Staffs were kind and town was well maintained.
If you love literature, especially Mark Twain. It is a great source of information about Twains childhood and sources of some of his best works.. The collection of Norman Rockwells original illustrations for the book, Tom Sawyer is a must see. A bonus is downtown Hannibal,a lively river town the has a real 18rh century feel.
It was a very Museum. Had a lot to tell about his life. Even had a short movie.Great.
This was one of my favorite adventures of all time! I learned so much and enjoyed the entire day. Rich history comes to life with the period actor at the museum. If you scout around town a little you realize that he and the unsinkable Molly Brown from Titanic were neighbors just down the street from each other growing up. They have done a great job of preserving this site and I would gladly return for another fun afternoon.
I love the history of the place.
Great place for kids and adults. Gotta visit!
Very interesting museum
A shrine, if you are a Mark Twain fan,and an education if you are of the deprived few who are not. Nice shop with many of lesser known books and a lot of background works. Souvenirs are reasonably priced. Includes several other attractions.
Very cool peice of history. If you ever read tom sawyer or never experienced that its still a novelesque place to visit
The museum consists of a few buildings in this quiet town. In spite a dozen of other books Mark Twain authored, the Adventures of Tom Sawyer is perhaps the most famous. There is a restoration of Mark Twains old house, in which you can see how he spent his childhood. It is believed that his childhood shaped his book. I spent two hours in this town learning about this famous writer.
Very nice
Very informative and enjoyable.
Loved it. Went during Tom Sawyer Days. The volunteer at the interpreter center was awesome. He grew up In Hannibal and had a lot of information. Wished we had more time to see more in Hannibal. It was neat to imagine the characters and Mark as we walked to each location. We were walking on history.Everyone was extremely nice.It would be nice to have characters stationed in areas to add to the experience and maybe give a living description of what life was like back then. Or even create a ticket that you can stamp at each location like a passport. Then visitors would have a nice souvenir. The only downside was dealing with the volleyball tournament crowd.
Just see this place. You can paint the same fence Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn’s friends did. See Becky Thatcher’s house. Eat where Sam Clemens ate. This is a very cool little town and one you outta see. Glad we checked it out.
Awesome museum of mark Twain and huck finn too.
Great tourism place with great food and great people
Nice place good exhibits, better for adults and teens, but some videos which children can watch . although a lot of the contents may need explained to them.
The Boyhood Home is an enjoyable experience for families that is faithful to Mark Twains literary achievement. Suggest taking the time to visit the historical buildings as well as the museum, its worth it.PS The nearby Jims Journey is not part of the Boyhood Home, but complements it by highlighting the African American experience in Hannibal.
Great food, wonderful atmosphere.
Touristy, but a must see
Charming little town...loved the old buildings. My husband particularly liked the Norman Rockwell paintings at the museum. Its quite a collection. A nice 2 hour break in our road trip.
Your kids are going to be bored as you find yourself reading the same stories over and over again.
Must see if you are in Hannibal, MO area. History very well presented.
Nice mix of museum displays and old buildings. Something for everyone from kids to lit buffs. Highlights include a bunch of studies and original paintings by Rockwell from an illustrated Tom Sawyer.
The museum is a tour of several buildings in Hannibal. Our family of 7, who ranged in age from 7 to 45, thoroughly enjoyed the day. Please plan for several hours to explore! The last stop, the gallery, needs at least an hour itself. What is great is that you can stop for lunch or an icecream cone along the way as each stop on the tour is in an independent building.
Awesome museum with multiple buildings to tour. Give a nice background on Mark Twain, and shows you some of his inspirations.
Interesting but disappointing also. All the rooms are behind glass. Would have been better with a tour guide.
We enjoyed Samuel Clemens growing up place .. from which he made much of in his writing.
Hannibal was a great place to visit. Very cool downtown, we were completely tickled to see the period buildings. Fun time.
Fun family time
It was enjoyable! Many things to read on Mark Twain history and it was fun to see Becky Thatchers home, the Judges office. Plus other places. Will need to return to see it again!
Nice museum. Small, yet multiple buildings. Things for all ages to read and interpret.
I lived in Hannibal for 20 years and I always love going down to seeing the Mark Twain festivities on the 4th of July
Its old, and needs some updating. But for what it is there, its awesome.
You learn about everything 12$ for an adult and 6$ not good prices but you see everything very great place
Mostly just reading excerpts from his books and biographies. Still neat to come and see. I would plan an hr or so to explore
Did a lot of walking listen to some music did some shopping scene Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher there it was a little slow that day they had predicted rain some stores didnt even bother to open but we enjoyed ourselves very much and even took a trip to the cave highly recommend to take your children a lot of fun
What a great stop for a few hours for Mark Twain fans. You can cover the salient points in 3 hours. What fun to find the actual facts that made Tom Sawyer and Huch Fin.
Wasnt what we expected nor worth the admission cost. Had emulations of things about Twain, played a clip on a projector screen from a movie Adventure of Huckleberry Finn I think. Very few artifacts and not sure if any were really belongings of Twain.
Love this place, very educational lots of shops, tours, great food, great people
